Arthur Frederick

Arthur E. Frederick, 62, of 2283 County Route 107, Perth, died Wednesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken suddenly.

Born April 12, 1934 in Schenectady, he was the son of Phillip and Georgianna Smith Frederick.

Mr. Frederick resided in Schenectady most of his life, also in Delanson from 1958 until moving to Perth in 1966.

He was educated in Schenectady schools.

Mr. Frederick served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was employed as a sheet metal worker with the Local No. 83 Sheet Metal Union, Albany, retiring in 1991.

He married Darlene M. Brothers on Sept. 13, 1958.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Arthur E. Frederick Jr. of Broadalbin and Philip V. Frederick of Gloversville; a daughter, Debrah L. Frederick of Perth; two brothers, Charles Frederick of Fayetteville, N.C., and Robert Frederick of Coco Beach, Fla., three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jeffords Chapel, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin. Cremation will be at Parkview Crematory in Schenectady.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Sunnyview of Schenectady.
 

Blanche Mosher
February 27, 1997

Blanche Mosher, 76, of 15 Walnut Drive, Whitesboro, died Thursday at her home.

Mrs. Mosher was born in St. Johnsville, the daughter of the late Ervin and Bertha Garner Smith. She was educated in St. Johnsville schools and lived many years in the St. Johnsville area.

Mrs. Mosher was a member of Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. 

She married Raymond Mosher on Oct. 25, 1941. He died in1984.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Mosher of New Mexico; four daughters, Cheryl Restante of California, Donna Monette of Rome, Kathy Wagoner of Alabama and JoAnn Tobin of Whitesboro; two sisters, Leona Szelc of Watertown and Mary Rackmyer of St. Johnsville; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
 

Ethel Deul
February 22, 1997

Mrs. Ethel Wendt Deul, 87, of State Street, Schenectady, died Saturday at St. Clare's Hospital after a long illness.

Born and educated in Gloversville Mrs. Deul moved to Schenectady in 1928.

She was a bookkeeper for 40 years through her husband's business, Ray's Radio and TV Service, retiring in 1968.

Mrs. Deul was a Protestant.

Her husband, Seneca "Ray" Duel, died in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Boorn of Schenectady; three sisters, Dorothy Lent of Mayfield, Marie White of Gloversville, and Betty Buchanan of Johnstown; a brother, Donald Wendt of Glendale, Ariz., three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions maybe made to charity.
 

Dorothy Douglas
February 28, 1997

Mrs. Dorothy M. Douglas, 80, of Nestle Road, Fort Plain, died Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.

Born July 12, 1916 in the Town of Minden, she was the daughter of Lester and Ida Swart Rockefeller. She was educated in Fort Plain schools.

Mrs. Douglas worked for the Montgomery County Office for the Aging as an outreach worker. She also served as a home health aid and worked at the former Ben Franklin Five & Dime Store in Fort Plain. She lastly was employed at the Fort Plain Senior Center as director.

She was a lifelong area resident.

Mrs. Douglas was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Freysbush. She was a member of St. John's Ladies Aid. She was a foster parent for the Montgomery County Social Services Department.

She was a member of the Advisory Council of the Fulmont Neighborhood Center in Fort Plain and an honorary member of the Fulmont Development Agency in Fonda. She was a past member of the Fort Plain Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary and was a former dispatcher for Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Services.

Clayton Douglas, whom she married Sept. 26, 1934, died May 11, 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Veda M. Douglas of Fort Plain and Virginia M. Herringshaw of Herkimer; two sons, Roger L. Douglas and Carl F. Douglas of Fort Plain; two sisters, De Etta Helmer of Little Falls and Irene March of Florida; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Douglas, who died April 7, 1986.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Spring burial will be in Freysbush Cemetery.

Ethel Carpenter
February 28, 1997

Ethel Clarinda Carpenter, 68, of Brainard Road, Enfield, Conn., died Friday evening at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, Conn.

Born Sept. 8, 1928 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of James and Helen Butler Quant. She moved to Connecticut and lived there for the past three years.

Mrs. Carpenter was employed as a clerk for Key Fleet Bank.

She was a member of the Manchester Baptist Church and Court Mayflower, Order of the Eastern Star in Gloversville.

Survivors include a son, Charles K. Carpenter of Enfield, Conn.; three daughters, Carol A. Carmona, Barbara J. Cintron and Robin L. Berg, all of Amsterdam; two brothers, James Quant of Schenectady and Richard Quant of Mayfield; three sisters, Madeline Simonson of Mayfield, and Jeannette St. Peters and Patricia Knapp, both of Gloversville; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, in the spring.
 

William Lampkin
March 1, 1997

William M. Lampkin, 40, of Route 30, died suddenly early Saturday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Born May 14, 1956 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Francis and Josephine Sisaro Lampkin. He was a 1974 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

Mr. Lampkin was employed by The Recorder for a time, as well as by KeyMark in Fonda and Broadalbin Manufacturing and High-Grade Welding. For the past 10 years, he was employed as a forklift operator for Sonoco Paper Products in Amsterdam. He also was a self-employed carpenter.

He was a prestigious member of the Loyal Order of the Moose # 1185 in Johnstown. He also was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Linda Drozinski, whom he married Oct. 28, 1989; a daughter, Jamie Lynn Lampkin at home; a son, William Lampkin Jr., also at home; two stepsons, Joseph S. Quill of Amsterdam and Edward M. Quill of Perth; four brothers, Richard Lampkin, Frank Lampkin Jr. and Scott Lampkin, all of Amsterdam, and Terrance Lampkin of Gloversville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Services will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund being established for his children through the funeral home.
 

John Sargalis
February 28, 1997

John Sargalis, 82, of Stoner Trail Road, Johnstown, died Friday evening at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a long illness.

Born June 7, 1914 in Frankfort, he was the son of John and Anna Juskevicius Sargalis.

Mr. Sargalis was first employed on the family farm in Starkville. For the past 48 years, he was the owner and operator of the Sargalis Dairy Farm on Stoner Trail Road.

He also was a contractor and assisted in the construction of the Coliseum at the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville. At one time, he was employed as a carpenter foreman for D.A. Collins Construction.

Mr. Sargalis was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Parish in Amsterdam.

His wife, the former Genevieve Kazlauskas, whom he married July 23, 1938, died July 26, 1994.

Survivors include two sons, David Sargalis and Robert Sargalis of Johnstown; four daughters, Patricia Petteys of Johnstown, Janet Zilka of Fonda and twins Arlene Meeks of Evans Mills and Kathleen Yurkewecz of Fultonville; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Services will be 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist, 40 Vanderveer St.

Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund or to the cemetery fund.
 

Edna Young
March 1, 1997

Mrs. Edna Richey Young, 94, of the New Amsterdam Apartments, died Saturday afternoon at the Albany Medical Center following a short illness.

Born Oct. 15, 1902 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Harry and Louise Sturm Richey and was a lifelong resident.

She was employed by several manufacturing companies in Amsterdam, and later as a beamer by the Mohawk Carpet Mills, retiring in 1960. In 1972, she passed the home health aide course at BOCES in Johnstown and practiced that profession until 1986.

Mrs. Young was instrumental in organizing a cerebral palsy class in the 1930s for Fulton and Montgomery counties, which later became affiliated with the United Cerebral Palsy Association. She also was a former Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and was a member of the Pocahantas Lodge of the Kenyetto Council.

She was a former board member of the Montgomery County Office for the Aging, a former board member of the New Amsterdam Apartments, and a member of the Hi-Lo Seniors, serving as secretary for 10 years. In 1985, she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Montgomery County Republican Club.

Mrs. Young was a communicant of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amsterdam. 

She married Francis Young in 1924. He died in 1960.

Survivors include a son, Francis Young Jr. of Canajoharie; a daughter, Anne Y. de Diego of Glenville; two granddaughters, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Robert Doxey officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. 

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Katheryn Yates
March 3, 1997

Mrs. Katheryn D. Yates, 89 of Glen Drive, Fultonville, died this morning at the Albany County Nursing Home after being a patient for one month.

Born April 19, 1907 in Helena, she was the daughter of John and Margaret Mahoney Dawson. Mrs. Yates was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. She was an elementary school teacher for the Fultonville school for 41 years, retiring in 1968. She was a member of the Montgomery County Teachers Association and the New York State Teachers Association.

She was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda. 

She married Gyles Yates on June 27, 1945. He died died Jan. 30, 1980.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, followed by a Mass of Christian at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda. Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Raymond Kercher
February 28, 1997

Raymond J. Kercher, 77, of Algonquin Drive, Wells, died Friday at his home after a long illness.

Born and educated in Buffalo, Mr. Kercher served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

For a number of years, he was proprietor of Jake's Bike Shop in Clarence outside of Buffalo. Later for 34 years, he was an expediter for Westinghouse in Buffalo before retiring in 1982.

Mr. Kercher lived in Wells for the past nine years.

He was a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church.

Mr. Kercher was a life member of the Clarence Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Wells American Legion.

He married Elizabeth Skora Kercher on March 17, 1945.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Donna Kercher Holland of Amherst, Mass.; a brother, Allen Kercher of St. Cloud, Fla.; a sister, Orpha Aldrich of Wethersfield, Conn.; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's Church. Spring burial will take place in St. Ann's Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville; Wells Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to charity.

Philip Cohen
March 1, 1997

Philip Cohen, 92, of Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in New York City, Mr. Cohen moved to Gloversville in 1906. He was a 1923 graduate of Gloversville High School and a member of its 1922-1923 basketball team, which went to the national championship tournament in Chicago.

For more than 25 years, Mr. Cohen operated the Cohen Department Stores in Gloversville, Johnstown and Northville.

Later, he owned and operated Beacon Wholesale on Main Street for almost 50 years until the time of his death.

Mr. Cohen was a member of Knesset Israel Synagogue, the Gloversville Jewish Community Center and Pinebrook Golf Club, a former member of the Eccentric Club and an original member and founder of the former Gloversville Elks Lodge.

He married Frances Rubin Cohen Jan. 1, 1926. She died Nov. 21, 1994.

Survivors include a son, Norman J. Cohen of Gloversville; two sisters, Faye Wechsler of Phoenix, Ariz., and Syd Skolsky of Florida; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Knesset Israel Synagogue. Burial will be in Knesset Israel Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Knesset Israel Synagogue or the American Cancer Society.

Arnold Osborne
February 28, 1997

Arnold Osborne, 72, of Bunker Hill Road, Mayfield, died Friday afternoon at Myakka Park in Sarasota County, Fla., after a long illness.

Born on Jan. 3, 1925 in Fort Plain, he was the son of William and Pearl Cartwright Osborne. He resided in Fort Plain and Ames before moving to Mayfield in 1982. During the winter he lived in Arcadia, Fla.

Mr. Osborne served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was employed by LifeSavers Inc., of Canajoharie, as the supervisor of the Beechies Department, retiring in 1982.

Mr. Osborne was of the Methodist faith.

He married the former Beverly McDuffee on Nov. 26, 1947.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Craig A. Osborne of Edmunston, Jerald R. Osborne of Fort Plain, and Jeffrey P. Osborne of Greenfield; a daughter, Bonnie Garrison of Ames; a sister, Irma Croce of Zephry Hills, Fla.; two grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating. The interment will be in the Fort Plain Cemetery.

Sophia Jinks
March 2, 1997

Sophia E. Jinks, 85, of 34 James St., Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.

Born Nov. 29, 1911 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Herbert and Margaret Vedder Fuller.

She was a lifelong Gloversville resident and a 1930 graduate of Gloversville High School.

Mrs. Jinks was employed as a clerk at the former S.S. Kresge Co. and later a waitress with the Pine Brook Golf Club in Gloversville, retiring many years ago.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gloversville. Mrs. Jinks was also a member of the Phi Delta Sorority of Gloversville High School.

She married Douglas W. Jinks on July 13, 1933.

Survivors include her husband and two sons, Dr. David C. Jinks of Champlin, Minn., and Daryl A. Jinks of Gloversville; a daughter, Diane Estrada of Clifton Park; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one cousin.

She was predeceased by two sons, Danny Jinks and Dr. Douglas D. Jinks.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Gary Siegfried officiating. Burial will be at Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Helen Chase
March 2, 1997

Mrs. Helen Chase, 91, formerly of Sacandaga Road, West Charlton, died Sunday at Montgomery Manor in Amsterdam after a long illness.

Mrs. Chase was born in Schenectady.

She was employed at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady during World War II.

Mrs. Chase was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Galway.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Gibson of Waterford; five sons, Lee Chase of West Virginia, John Chase of Ohio, Edward Chase of Saratoga Springs, Francis Chase Jr. of Florida and Joseph Chase of Arizona; a brother, Louis Adamczak of Virginia; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church, East Street, Galway. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Galway.

Arrangements are by the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Galway.
 

Leona Bennett
March 1, 1997

Mrs. Leona E. Bennett, 93, of South Port Square, Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Northville, died Saturday at Columbus Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Born in Northville, Mrs. Bennett lived there most of her life before moving to Florida nearly three years ago.

Her husband, Gerald G. Bennett, Sr., died in 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald G. Bennett Jr., of Lake Luzerne and Charles R. Bennett of Port Charlotte; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St. Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Geraldine Rulison
March 1, 1997

Mrs. Geraldine Rulison, 65, of Mill Street, Gloversville, died Saturday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long illness.

Mrs. Rulison was born and educated in Johnstown.

She was a member of the Johnstown Women of the Moose.

She married Maurice Rulison in 1960.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sisters, Loretta Moran and Audrey Fancher, both of Gloversville.

A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Rear Admiral Richard Paddock
February 19, 1997

Rear Admiral Richard A. Paddock, U.S. Navy (retired), died Feb. 19 at his home in Pensacola, Fla., after a long battle with cancer. 

Born April 8, 1925 in Auburn, he was the son of George C. and Rebecca H. Paddock. He served 37 years in a distinguished naval career which spanned three hot wars and most of the cold war.

Commissioned an ensign in 1944 through the V-12 program at Cornell, he served in the Pacific during World War II. He returned to Cornell after the war and graduated in 1947. His postgraduate work included studies at the New York School for Social Research, the University of Washington, and the junior and senior courses at the Naval War College.

Fleet highlights include action on the gun line off Korea, command of the destroyer USS Myles C. Fox, command of the amphibious transport USS Washburn, Commodore Amphibious Squadron One, Commander of the Danang Naval Facility, Chief of Staff Commander US Naval Forces Vietnam, Commandant of the Fourteenth Naval District, and Commander Amphibious Group Eastern Pacific. He led the mine clearing operation in Vietnamese waters during that war, and the recovery of Skylab astronauts in the Pacific. During five tours of duty in Washington, Admiral Paddock served as a politico-military specialist, including director of Strategic Plans and Policy for the Joint Chief of Naval Operations. His last position was vice director of Plans and Policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C.

Admiral Paddock's decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Navy Commendation Medal, and numerous campaign and service awards.

Admiral Paddock retired in 1981 in Pensacola where he was active in community affairs, serving on the Escambia County Zoning Board until December 1996, president of the Pensacola Symphony Board, the American Heart Association Board, the Panhandle Tiger Bay Association Board, and the Scenic Hills Homeowners Association. He was a member of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation and the TROA.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Paddock; two daughters, Carolyn Knefely of Pensacola and Susan P. Stumpf of Virginia; two sons, Dr. Bradley H. Paddock of Gloversville and David G. Paddock of Virginia Beach, Va., a brother, Robert C. Paddock of Glen Cove, a sister, Georgia Dudley of Woodbury, Conn., and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be celebrated Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel, Pensacola. Full Military Honors will follow at Barrancus National Cemetery.

James Brennan Jr.
January 14, 1997

James J. Brennan Jr., 81, of Lake Placid, Fla., died at his home Jan. 14.

Born Aug. 16, 1915 in Amsterdam, he was the son of James J. and Theresa Hogan Brennan and was a 1933 graduate of St. Mary's Institute.

He was employed by the New York Central Railroad and retired several years ago. He was a former member of St. Mary's Church.

His wife, the former Charlotte Farrell Brennan, died in 1991. 

He is survived by one son, Thomas P. Brennan, of The Woodlands, Texas; and a sister, Claire Fitzgibbons, Port Orange, Fla., and one granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Lake Placid, Fla. 

Interment was at Palmyra.
