TRUJILLO: Samuel Jacob Trujillo, 19, a resident of San
Lorenzo, passed away Wednesday, May 28, at Gila Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 25, 1983, in Tyrone to George R. and Rosa Ann (Lopez)
Trujillo II.†He was a 2001 graduate of Cobre High School, and listed in
Who&Mac185;s Who Among American High School Students in 2001.†He was
accepted into DeVry University.†He enjoyed his car, hunting and fishing,
loved taking broken things and fixing them, and riding his four-wheeler.
He is survived by his parents, George R. and Rose Ann Trujillo II, of the
home; girlfriend, Elizabeth Cardenas of Vanadium; brother, Jason George
Trujillo III of San Lorenzo; sisters, Pauline Virginia Trujillo and fiancÈ,
Albert Allen Arrey, of San Lorenzo, and Patricia Suzanne Trujillo, also
of San Lorenzo; cousins, Cammy and Kala Carrick of the family home;†maternal
grandmother, Pauline Lopez of Santa Clara; maternal grandfather, Albert

TAYLOR: Dr. Robert E. Taylor, 75, passed away Wednesday, May 28, at
Gila Regional Medical Center. Calling hours will be from 3-4 p.m. Sunday
at Baca’s Funeral Chapels. The funeral service will be held Monday at 10
in the morning at Baca’s Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Robert L. Ihlefeld,
rector of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, officiating. Interment
will follow at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; a sister, Margaret Baird,
and her husband, Robert; and five nieces and nephews. Dr. Taylor was born
Sept. 30, 1927, in Grants Pass, Ore., to Harold Taylor and Edith Grace
Taylor. He received his bachelor of science degree cum laude from the University
of Arizona in 1952. He was named a Paul Steer Burgess fellow and received
his master of science degree in 1953. He served as state supervisor of
Agricultural Education and state adviser to the Future Farmers of America
in the Arizona Department of Education until 1959 when he began work on
his doctorate at Ohio State University. He completed his degree in 1961,
and was subsequently named to the faculty as an associate professor. He
advanced to full professor three years later. Dr. Taylor was an internationally
recognized scholar and leader in the field of work-force preparation. He
founded and served as executive director of the National Center for Research
in Vocational Education at Ohio State University from 1965 until he elected
early retirement in 1986 to establish a consulting firm with his wife,
Dr. Barbara Kline Taylor, in Silver City. During his 25-year tenure at
Ohio State, he held professorial appointments in the Colleges of Education
and Agriculture, and served as associate dean of both colleges from 1974
until leaving the university in 1986. Dr. Taylor served as a consultant
to a wide variety of groups — educational and business — including state
boards and departments of education, universities, research and development
agencies and institutions, community colleges, local school districts,
private career schools and colleges. He chaired the Council for Educational
Research and Development, the organization of national research centers
and regional educational laboratories, and was a member of the organizing
board of directors of the Career College Association. Dr. Taylor received
a number of awards and recognitions throughout his career. Upon his retirement,
the Ohio State University board of trustees established the Robert F. Taylor
Graduate Fellowship in Vocational-technical Education. The University of
Arizona gave him its Alumni Achievement Award at commencement in December
1987. In 1997, the Association for Career and Technical Education bestowed
upon him its highest award, the prestigious Carl Perkins Humanitarian Award.
That same year, the National Association of State Directors of Vocational-technical
Education conferred its Distinguished Service Award; previously, he had
been made an honorary life member of the association. Since location in
New Mexico in 1986, the governor appointed him to a four-year term as a
member of the Commission on Higher Education in 1987. In 1998, Gov. Gary
Johnson appointed him to a five-year term as a university regent at the
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, one of the West’s premier
research universities. It is nationally and internationally recognized
for its science and engineering programs. Dr. Taylor was an active member
of Rotary, having served as president. He was the recipient of the designation,
Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest award. Most recently, he became a
member of the Western New Mexico University Foundation and was chairing
its annual fund-raising committee. Pallbearers will be Chet Hansen, Gene

NAME CHANGE CALLED IN BY FUNERAL HOME
KENNEDY: Ruth Genevieve Kennedy, 89, died peacefully Saturday, May 17,
at The Cottages of Albuquerque, where she had resided since 1999. French
Mortuary arranged the cremation and memorial service in Albuquerque on
May 20. There was a burial service at Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver City
on May 22. Mrs. Kennedy was born Sept. 17, 1913, in Colon, Neb. She graduated
from Wahoo High School, and in 1935 received her degree as a graduate nurse
from the University of Nebraska. She came to the Southwest, where she was
licensed as a registered nurse in Arizona and New Mexico. She practiced
most of her nursing in Santa Rita and Silver City hospitals. She married
Nicholas L. Kennedy Jr. in 1941. They lived for more than 40 years in Hurley,
where Mr. Kennedy worked for Kennecott Copper Corp. They had four children,
Nick III, John, Nancy and Jenann. Mrs. Kennedy attended the Hurley Community
Church and was a member of the Hurley Chapter of the Order of the Eastern
Star. After her husband died in 1981, Mrs. Kennedy continued to live in
Hurley, but moved to Albuquerque in 1987 to be closer to her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sister, Marie; her four children; her grandchildren,
Karen, Christine, Megan, Miriam, Kimberly, Sheila, Daniel and Nicholas;
and one great-granddaughter, Paige Kathleen, who was born May 17, 2003.

LUNA: Max T. Luna, 64, a resident of Fort Bayard, entered eternal rest
Tuesday, May 27, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial Mass will be said at the Santa Clara Catholic Church on Sunday,
Nov. 23, at 8 in the morning. Mr. Luna was born Sept. 16, 1938, in Hot
Springs, now Truth or Consequences. He is survived by his "jefita," Sista
Luna; brother, Abel Luna, and wife, Celia; sisters, Nadine Collins and
husband, Jim, Debra Orozco, Norma Luna and Maxine Allensworth; sister-in-law,
Trina Luna; aunts, Lydia Padilla and Elveria Luna; and numerous nephews,
nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Max Luna Sr.;
mother, Lucy; and brothers, Albert, Frank and Victor. Entrusted to the

REYES: Amador T. “Moyer” Reyes Jr., 57, a resident of Hurley, entered
into eternal rest Sunday, May 25, at Gila Regional Medical Center. Visitation
will be held today from 4-5 p.m. at Baca’s Funeral Chapels. The prayer
vigil will be held this evening at 7:30 at Infant Jesus Catholic Church
in Hurley, with Father Dan Porter reciting the holy rosary. The funeral
liturgy will be celebrated Thursday at 10 in the morning at Infant Jesus
Catholic Church, with Father Porter officiating. Interment will follow
at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Full veterans honors will be accorded.
Mr. Reyes was born in North Hurley on Feb. 3, 1946, to Amador Z. Reyes
Sr. and Guadalupe Terrazas Reyes. He retired from Kennecott Copper Corp.
as a warehouse floorman. He served his country in the U.S. Army during
the Vietnam War, from 1966-68. He was an active member of Vietnam Veterans
Chapter 358 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was
active in the community, having served as president of the Head Start Program.
He coached Little League, Senior League and girls' softball for several
years. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patsy Reyes, of the home;
three sons, Amador “Moyer” Reyes III and his wife, Debbie, of Hurley, Albert
Reyes and his wife, Michele, of Hawthorne, Nev., and Ray Reyes of Las Cruces;
a daughter, Rachel Reyes of Carson City, Nev.; seven sisters, Theresa Murillo
and her husband, Ruben, of Hutchinson, Kan., Maria Moreno of Las Cruces,
Irma Huerta and her husband, Manuel, of Hurley, Edna Ordonez of Tucson,
Ariz., Martha Garcia and her husband, Andrew, of Hurley, Olga Huerta and
her husband, Wero, of Hurley, and Rosemarie Quevedo of Hurley; seven grandchildren,
Zachary, Jasmine, Joslyn, Amador IV, Victoria, Brandon Lee and Aaron; and

ROMERO: Cora Romero, 75, formerly of Silver City, passed away Friday,
May 23, in North Hollywood, Calif. Services were held today at the San
Fernando Mission in Mission Hills, Calif. Interment followed at the San
Fernando Mission Cemetery. Mrs. Romero is survived by her husband, Fernando
Diaz; daughter, Clara Diaz; mother-in-law, Lorenza Diaz of Silver City;
four sisters, Ursula Bencomo and husband, Tony, of Silver City, Eva Costello
and husband, Robert, of La Junta, Colo., Maria Romero of Pensacola, Fla.,
and Lucy Baca and husband, Marcilino, of Denver; and brothers, Manuel Romero
Jr. and wife, Louise, and Jose Romero, all of La Junta. She is also survived
by several nieces and nephews. Utter McKinley Mortuary of Mission Hill,

EVERSON: John L. Everson, 72, a resident of Mimbres, entered into eternal
rest Saturday, May 24, at his home. The funeral liturgy was celebrated
today at 11 in the morning at the San Juan Catholic Church, with Father
Dan Porter officiating. Interment followed at the San Lorenzo Catholic
Cemetery. Mr. Everson was born April 16, 1931, in San Francisco to John
Raymond Everson and Luella Francis Pino Everson. He was an electrical technician
with the Department of Defense until his retirement. Surviving is his wife,
Marilyn, of the home; three sons, William "Bill" of Chelan, Wash., John
of Penn Valley, Calif., and Steven of Chilo, Calif.; four daughters, Bonnie
of Waterford, Calif., Delores "Lori" of Orlando, Fla., Rebecca of Paso
Robles, Calif., and Rosemary of Atascadero, Calif.; and a sister, Geraldine
Dever. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

BLOODWORTH: Letitia Bloodworth, 95, of Silver City passed away Saturday

BELTRAN: Rumalda S. Beltran of Sierra Vista, Ariz., formerly of Santa
Clara, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, May 20, at Sierra Vista Medical
Center. Visitation will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at Baca’s Funeral Chapels,
where the prayer vigil will be held at 7. Mr. David Castañon will
preside. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at
the Santa Clara Catholic Church, with Father Virgilio Flores officiating.
Interment will follow at the Hanover Cemetery, where she will be laid to
rest. Mrs. Beltran was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Santa Rita to Pedro Saborio
and Margarita Ortiz Saborio. Mrs. Beltran’s love of children led her to
become a foster grandparent at Central Elementary School. She was called
"Grandma" by the many children she worked with. She will be remembered
for her kindness, humor, and unconditional love, and teaching her children
of God’s love and to always have faith. She is survived by a son, Bonifacio
Saborio of Albuquerque; three daughters, Dolores B. Silva and her husband,
Tony, of Santa Clara, Virginia B. Arrellin and her husband, Roman, of Tucson,
Ariz., and Norma B. Montoya and her husband, Ysidro, of Sierra Vista; a
brother, Felipe Saborio, and his wife, Chen, of Hurley; and 15 grandchildren,
Richard, Lorrie and Valerie Silva, Elizabeth A. Schillinger, Mike and Mark
Arrellin, Monica, Jessica and Israel Montoya, and Alicia Shirley, Margaret,
Tony, Elizabeth, Frankie and Johnny Saborio. Twenty great-grandchildren,
and numerous nieces and nephews also survive Mrs. Beltran. She was preceded
in death by her parents; her husband, Ricardo Beltran, in August 1970;

HORCASITAS: William Horcasitas, 87, of Santa Clara passed away Tuesday,

Perez, Hector Madrid Jr., Lorraine Tipton and her husband, Rob, Jennifer
Bair and her husband, Zach, Jessica Johnson, Diane Maldonaldo and her husband,
Manny, Megan Miller and Jonothan Miller; eight great-grandchildren, David
Torrez, Phillip Torrez, Michelle Torrez, Brandon Tipton, Matthew Bair,
Rochelle Perez, Angelique Maldonaldo and Anna Marie Maldonaldo; and two
sisters, Elizabeth Horcasitas of Las Cruces and Connie Contreras of El
Paso, Texas. He was preceded in death in 2002 by his wife of 61 years,
Minnie Horcasitas; his daughter, Anna Marie, in 2001; his daughter, Rosella,
in 1974; his parents, Joe and Adela; his sisters, Margaret Mendez and Rita
Gonzalez; and his brother, Fred Horcasitas. In his younger years, Mr. Horcasitas
was a very successful baseball player. He was a World War II veteran, having
served in the European Theater. Upon his return home from the war, he and
his father ran the Trujillo General Store in Santa Clara. After his father's
death, Mr. Horcasitas owned and operated the store for many years. He also
served on the Cobre school board. He was known in Santa Clara for his beautiful
yard, in which he took great pride. Pallbearers for Mr. Horcasitas are

PHILPOTT: Lou Era Philpott, 46, of Las Cruces passed away Saturday,
May 17, at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice. She was born in Carlsbad to
William and Lula Philpott on Nov. 5, 1956. She is survived by her brother,
Kenneth M. Philpott, and wife, Liz, and her nephew, Michael, all of Silver
City. She is also survived by two great-nieces, three great-nephews, an
uncle, three aunts, numerous cousins, and many, many friends. She was preceded
in death by her father, in 1975, and her mother, in 1997. Ms. Philpott
was a teacher for the hearing impaired at Oñate High School. She
was also involved in theater. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday at Temple Baptist Church, 2300 E. Missouri Ave., Las Cruces, with
Pastor Max Perkins officiating. Service arrangements are with Graham Mortuary
and Mesilla Valley Crematory, 555 W. Amador, Las Cruces.
ROTH: Herman B. Roth, 86, of Silver City passed away Wednesday, May
21, at his home. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright
Funeral Home. No services are planned at this time. Mr. Roth was born Sept.
27, 1916, in Hagerstown, Ind. He was the son of Raymond Roth and Bessie
Brown Roth. He married Jenevieve Ramsey on July 23, 1945, in Dalton, Ga.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jenevieve, of the family home;
two sons, James Michael Roth and his wife, Joann, of Richmond, Ind., and
David W. Roth and his wife, Rhonda, of Silver City; two sisters, Helen
Hudson and her husband, Lay, of Richmond, and Betty Anderson of Salisbury,
Ind.; one sister-in-law, Genevieve; five grandchildren, James Michael Roth
Jr., Angela Marie Wesler and her husband, Scott, of Richmond, Carrah Knee
and her husband, Jeremy, of Las Cruces, Candice Roth of Silver City, and
John Roth and his wife, Kathleen, of Williamsburg, Ind.; two great-grandchildren,

ABALOS: David O. Abalos, 77, of Silver City passed away Sunday, May
18, in Fort Bayard Medical Center. The family will receive friends from
4-7 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home. The prayer vigil at 7 p.m. will
be recited by Deacon Jerry Bustillos. The funeral Mass will be celebrated
at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Father
Rod Nichols officiating. Mr. Abalos was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Deming.
He was the son of Juan Abalos Sr. and Isabel Ochoa Abalos. He is survived
by five daughters, Virginia Bustillos and her husband, Jerry, of Silver
City, Delia Sherman of Arenas Valley, Sally Abalos and her companion, Leo,
of Rio Rancho, Isabel Gonzales of Rio Rancho, and Ernestine Abalos of Albuquerque;
two sons, David Abalos of Albuquerque, and Robert Abalos and his companion,
Annadel Maestas, of Albuquerque; 14 grandchildren, Edwardo Bustillos and
Katrina Bustillos, both of Albuquerque, William Bustillos of Denton, Texas,
Vanessa Sherman and her companion, Rudy Mesa, of Santa Clara, Nathaniel
Sherman and Amanda Sherman, both of Silver City, Joshua Abalos of Rio Rancho,

Abalos served with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He was employed by
the Santa Fe Railroad and by various grocery stores in Silver City. Mr.
Abalos enjoyed playing the guitar, singing and running. He won several
medals for running in the Senior Olympics. He was a Crusillista, a lector
and a choir member at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. His favorite
dessert was vanilla ice cream. Pallbeaers for Mr. Abolos will be his sons,
David Abalos Jr. and Robert Abalos, and his grandsons, Ed Bustillos, Joshua

UNDERWOOD: John M. Underwood, 74, of Bayard passed away Sunday, May
18, at his home. He was born July 10, 1928, in Thorton, Ark. He was a military
policeman in the Army from 1946-47. He and his wife, Mattie, moved to Silver
City in 1955. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mattie; sons, C.F.
and Brenda Underwood of Quinlan, Texas, Doug and Lynne Underwood of Clovis,
and John Underwood of Warren, Ark.; daughters, Wanda Underwood of Arenas
Valley, and Brenda Gaussoin, Marie and Pat Peebles, and Betty and Larrie
McCanna, all of Farmington; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
his brother, Ray, and Doris Underwood, of Loving, Texas; a sister, Mary-Virginia,
and Donald Thompson, of Del Norte, Colo.; numerous cousins, nieces and
nephews; and too many friends to count. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Coy and Mary; his brothers, C.F. and Franklin Underwood; and his
sister, Alice Roper. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations

into eternal rest Tuesday, May 13, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. Visitation
will be held Thursday, May 22, beginning at 4 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Chapels,
where the prayer vigil will be held at 7, with Deacon Jerry Bustillos presiding.
The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Friday, May 23, at 10 in the morning
at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Father Rod Nichols officiating.
Interment will follow at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery. Mr.
Bueno was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Silver City to Miguel Bueno and Juana
Madrid Bueno. He was a barber and a communicant at St. Vincent de Paul
Catholic Church. His brother, Daniel Bueno, and his wife, Rosie, of San
Bernardino, Calif., and several nieces and nephews survive him. Pallbearers

HOOD: Thomas Barka Hood, 60, of Lordsburg passed away Tuesday, May 13,
in Gila Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 4-7
p.m. Sunday at Lordsburg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.
Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Lordsburg, with the Rev.
Loren W. Turner officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mr. Hood was born April 7, 1943, in Lordsburg. He was the son of Franklin
Hood and Inez Barka Hood. He married Deborah Jelenich on April 21, 1973,
in Palomas, Mexico. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, of the family
home; his mother, Inez Hood; five children, Thomas D. Hood and his wife,
Charlie, Alice J. Hood, Michael W. Hood and his companion, Teresa King,
Kathryn J. Hood and her companion, Richard Cramer, and Joseph N. Hood;
and seven grandchildren, Colton C. Carver, Hayden T. Hood, Daniel H. Alba,
Bradley T. Hood, Hope M. Hood, Faith M. Hood and Tomrie J. Hood, all of
Lordsburg. He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Hood, and one
daughter, Lori Ann Hood. Mr. Hood liked to participate in athletics while
he attended school. A pilot and architect, he was a classic car enthusiast
and enjoying playing pool. He was a very good businessman and enjoyed going
to work every day. He was a great friend to all who met him. Mr. Hood was
a great father to all of his children. He loved his entire family with
his whole heart. He held his children and grandchildren closest to his

McCURDY: Mikle Dean McCurdy, 43, of Reserve passed away Wednesday, May
14, in Gila Regional Medical Center. Cremation has taken place under the

Mr. McCurdy was born Sept. 22, 1959, in Santa Ana, Calif. He was the son
of Dean McCurdy and Nelly Edwards. He married Rhonda Fannin on July 8,
2001, in Las Vegas, N.M. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda; his parents;
and four sisters, Cindy McCurdy, Vickie McCurdy, Bonnie McCurdy and Dorothy
McCurdy. Mr. McCurdy was a manager for Goodyear Tire Stores. Bright Funeral

CONNELL: Oletta Minerva Connell, 90, of Hurley passed away Sunday, April
27, at her home, sur-rounded by her family and loved ones. Services will
be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3755 N. Swan,
Silver City, on Saturday, with visitation starting at 9 a.m. and funeral
services at 10 a.m. The graveside service will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery.
Mrs. Connell was born June 29, 1912, in Dalton, Randolph County, Ark. She
was the daughter of John Marbrook Benskin and Lucinda Emmaline Farley Benskin.
She married Isaac Lorenzo Connell on July 15, 1932, in Silver City. He
preceded her in death April 7, 1990. Mrs. Connell is survived by four daughters,
Delva Coldwell and her husband, George, of Hurley, Zoe Van Heel and her
husband, Gerhard, of Bakersfield, Calif., Kay Cook and her husband, Richard,
of Hurley, and Fay Farr of Provo, Utah; a son-in-law, Lewis Farr, also
of Provo; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
and numerous nieces and nephews. Family members who preceded her in death
and are waiting to embrace her are her parents; her beloved hus-band, Isaac;
their son, Wiley Lorenzo Connell; two grandsons; one granddaughter; two
brothers, Marion Oscar Benskin and Joseph Leo Benskin; and three sisters,
Sarah Eveline Benskin Lee, Alma Neomi Benskin Childers and Ada Naomi Benskin
Dodge. Mrs. Connell had been a resident of Hurley since 1952. She held
numerous positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mrs. Connell was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, sewing, embroidery
and painting. She was the best apple pie baker ever. She will be dearly
missed by all who knew and loved her. Pallbearers for Mrs. Connell will
be George Coldwell, Gerhard Van Heel, Richard Cook, James Lamoreaux, Edwin

LOVELESS: Jamie Alsip Conner Loveless passed away Friday, April 25,
at the age of 48. She is survived by her son, Joe Wheeler, and daughter,
Joni Wheeler, three grandchildren, her parents and four siblings. Graveside

CHAPMAN: Dr. Carroll Winston Chapman, 69, of Silver City passed away
Sunday, May 11, at his home. Cremation has taken place under the direction
of Bright Funeral Home. No services are planned at this time. Dr. Chapman
had been a Silver City resident since 1998. Born in Austin, Texas, on July
22, 1933, to Walter and Singie Chapman, he is survived by his wife, Glenda;
daughters, Teri and Sheri; and a brother, Wayland. He attended Austin public
schools until, at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951
for a three-year tour of duty. He served in the 11th Marine Regiment, 1st
Marine Division, as an artillery telephone wireman in the Korean war from
December 1951 until January 1953. After being honorably discharged from
the Corps, he attended the University of Texas (Austin), where he received
bachelor of science, master of science and doctorate degrees in electrical
engineering; did research in upper atmospheric physics and electromagnetic
wave propagation; and taught part-time courses in electromagnetic theory.
Dr. Chapman also worked in industry for about 30 years, including a brief
stint at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, Calif. He spent the bulk of his
career in the petroleum industry, beginning in 1966, when he joined the
California Research Corp. (Chevron) to work in the general area of geophysical
research. He held several patents on electrical well logging techniques
and methods as a result of his work. "We knew and appreciated him for his
integrity; his exceptional intellect and his seeming exhaustible wit. He

MORALES: Miguel S. Morales, 90, a resident of Silver City, passed away
Friday, May 9, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. He was born Sept. 28, 1912,
in Silver City to Santarosa and Domitila (Salais) Morales. Mr. Morales
left Silver City and worked for many years on the production line with
Hunts Food. Upon returning to Silver City, he worked many jobs. He is survived
by and lived with his great-niece, Yolanda Barrera, and her husband, Saustino,
of Silver City. He also leaves many other nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

TIEDE: Joy Frederick Tiede, 77, of Tyrone passed away Sunday, May 11,
at his home. The family will receive friends from 7–8:30 p.m. Wednesday

at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Swan Street in Silver
City, conducted by Bishop Billy Billings. Interment will be in Ramah Cemetery
in Ramah. Mr. Tiede was born April 7, 1926, in Cumro, Neb. He was the son
of Karl F. and Edna Fay (Ashbaugh) Tiede. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude,
of the family home; four sons, Billy Tiede and his wife, Linda, of Inman,
S.C., Jesse Tiede and his wife, Barbara, of Palestine, Texas, Douglas Sullivan
and his wife, Ilean, of South Jordan, Utah, and Bruce Sullivan and his
wife, Vivienne, of Sandy, Utah; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;
five brothers, Marvin Tiede and his wife, Donella, of Overton, Neb., Murl
Tiede and his wife, Ilene, of Elwood, Neb., Karl Dean Tiede and his wife,
Buelah, of Overton, Fred Tiede and his wife, Ruby, of Belen, and Jim Tiede
and his wife, Cathy, of Lincoln, Neb.; and two sisters, Marvelle Lahm and
Martha Tiede, both of Kerney, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents.
As a child, he learned to work at an early age on the farm with his father.
After high school, he was drafted into the Navy, in July 1944. His first
ship was the U.S. Polana AKA35. He served on many ships and submarines.
His favorite was the submarines. He always said, “I traveled over, under
and on most of the oceans and seas in the world." While he was in training
in Virginia, he met and married Mary Maxine Gunter. From this marriage
there were two boys, Billy Ray and Jesse. He was divorced from Maxine in
1970. While in the Navy, he learned the trade of an electrician. He served
for 20 years and retired in 1964. After the service, he went to work for
RCA in Thule, Greenland, and was then transferred to ROI Nimore Pacific
Missile Range. After the contract expired for RCA, he went to work in Korea
and Thailand. One of his favorite places in the world was Thailand. He
said “the country is beautiful and the people are very warm and friendly."
In 1972, he went to Gallup to visit his brother, Fred. There he stayed
after he met Gertrude. He joined the Mormon Church in August 1973 and married
Gertrude Rogers Sullivan in October of that year. She had two sons, Douglas
and Bruce Sullivan, and this made four boys for Joy. He served in many
callings in the church, and enjoyed helping and serving others. He also
had many hours of service at Gila Regional Medical Center and loved all
the people there. He was an extremely good man and dearly loved his family.
He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Pallbearers for Mr. Tiede
will be Richard Tiede, Brian Tiede, Murl Tiede, Jim Tiede, Chuck Sullivan
and Sterling Hamilton. Honorary bearers will be Smokie Sullivan, L.H. Rogers,

MADRID-TIBBS: Diane Madrid-Tibbs passed away suddenly at her home in
Roswell on Sunday, May 4, at the age of 47. She was preceded on death by
her son, Jeramie Ramirez. She is survived by her father, Eliseo Madrid;
mother, Alice Mendoza Madrid; husband, Don Tibbs; sisters, Marlene Chavez,
Sandra Rodriguez, Nancy Madrid, Jeannett Otero and Brenda Madrid; brothers,
Leo Madrid Jr., Jessie Madrid, Robbie Madrid and David Madrid; daughter,
Crystal Ramirez; sons, Amon Sanchez, Tommy Ramirez Jr., Gabriel Ramirez
and Isaac Ramirez; and other family members and friends, who loved and
will miss her. The funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Belen Catholic
Church in Belen on Friday at 10 a.m. The burial service was held Saturday

LONG: Thelma B. Long, 98, of Tyrone passed away Tuesday, May 6, at her
home. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday at Bright Funeral
Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, also at Bright Funeral
Home, with the Rev. Jim Massey officiating. Interment will be in Memory
Lane Cemetery. Mrs. Long was born Oct. 4, 1904, in Turtle Creek, Pa. She
was the daughter of Charles Boden and Nellie Milner Boden. She is survived
by her son, Wilfred Long Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandsons, Andrew Long
of Tacoma, Wash., and Jason Long of Portland, Ore.; one great-grandson,
Aidan Long of Tacoma; her former husband, Wilfred Long Sr. of Tucson; and
numerous other relatives and friends. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by
her parents; one daughter, Norma Gunther; an infant son; two sisters; and
four brothers. Mrs. Long was a transplant from the Northeast and loved
the milder climate of Silver City, including the more frequent blue skies
with cotton clouds. Old friends from Maryland would ask, but, she had to
say, she never found any silver in Silver City. At 91, she hiked the rugged
Gila cliff dwellings tour, needing help with only the steepest steps due
to her short stature. She attributed her stamina to all the running after
children she did while caring for her own and friends' families. Until
her last days, she enjoyed watching children play in the local park. Mrs.
Long lived independently from 1978 until last June. The loss of her daughter,
Norma, in 1998 seemed to be a turning point in her long life. She was devoted
to church and regularly served on various women’s committees. Mrs. Long
was a very loving and caring person, and will be missed dearly by her family
and friends. Pallbearers for Mrs. Long will be Sam Lowen, Jeff Glenn, Pat
Peralta, Art Veeder, Dwight Simpson, Jack Reese and Mac Jones. Bright Funeral

MEAD: The Rev. Deward Jesse "D.J." Mead, 76, died Wednesday, May 7,
at his home in Peoria, Ariz., with his wife of 12 years and his family
present. Funeral services will be held at 1 in the afternoon Monday at
the First Baptist Church in Silver City, with Dr. Radford Hutcheson officiating.
Interment will follow at Fort Bayard National Cemetery with veteran honors
accorded by the Grant County honor and color guards. He was born June 16,
1926, in Morris, Okla., to Artie Burr and Bessie Lee Oney Mead. He served
in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 during World War II. For the past 30 years,
he served the Lord as a Baptist minister, pasturing in more than 10 churches
in the years. They were Mountain View Baptist Church in Alamogordo, South
Manor Baptist Church in Roswell, Klamath Baptist Church in Klamath Falls,
Ore., Macomes Baptist Church in El Paso, Texas, First Baptist Church in
Allied Gardens, Calif., Crestview Baptist Church in Farmington, First Baptist
Church in Raton, Urbandale in Dallas, Sixth Street Baptist Church in Silver
City, Mimbres Baptist Church in Mimbres, and Bethel Baptist Church in Deming.
The Rev. Mead is survived by his wife, Theta; four children, "D.J." Jr.,
Vicki, Gerald and Sheri; three stepchildren, Wendy, Robert and Randall;
four brothers, Emil Victor Mead, Arvil Burr Mead, Artie Agusta Mead and
Arbury Ernest Mead (Tode); and two sisters, Emma Naomi "Sis" Basinger and
Bessie Fern "Betty" Phillips. The couple together had 25 grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife
of 42 years, Ila-Ray "Betty" Mead. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren.
The Rev. Mead was a man who touched every person he came in contact with.
He was a truly special man who loved his family and will be missed by all.

LANG: Donald Lang, 73, of Tyrone passed away Thursday, May 8, in Gila

was born April 9, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio. He was the son of Lawrence Lang
and Rose Mason Lang. He was married to Carolyn Jarrett. He is survived

City, Greg Lang and his wife, Pam, of Clermont, Fla., Kevin Lang and his

GARFIELD: Merle Raymond Garfield Jr., born July 14, 1925, died Monday,
May 5. He was born in Canton, Ohio, to Merle and Hazel Garfield Sr., one
of seven children. He had five brothers and one sister. He moved to Fort
Collins, Colo., at an early age and graduated from Fort Collins High. He
served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier in World War II. Mr. Garfield
returned to Fort Collins and married Shirley Huffman on Aug. 21, 1949.
After he graduated from Colorado A&M in 1950, the couple moved to Reserve.
He bought the Reserve Water Works and taught high school for the next nine
years. He later established Garfield Electric and went into partnership
with Emil Kiehne on the Apache Gas Co. He is survived by his wife of 54
years, Shirley; three daughters, Gaythel Hawkins of Thatcher, Ariz., Gellen
Atwood of Sylvania, Ohio, and Gwen Bounds of Elk Grove, Calif.; six grandchildren;
three brothers, Larry, Wilbur and Duane; and one sister, Nancy Amend. Memorial
services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Reserve Community Center.
CARRILLO: Ruben R. Carrillo, 60, of Kent, Wash., died Sunday, May 4.
Born May 11, 1942, in Santa Rita, he served in the U.S. Navy, and retired
from the Boeing Co. in 1997. He was an electronics engineer. Survivors
include his wife, Rodora; mother, Herlinda Carrillo of Silver City; sons,
Nolbert, Benjamine, Ruben and Robert; daughters, Linda Maya, Rosa Chavez,
Julia Lua and Virginia Murrillo; stepsons, Dante and Romeo Pattuinan; stepdaughter,
Fe Palmer; brothers, Rudy Carrillo, Ernie Carrillo and Benny Arellano of
Silver City; sisters, Priscilla Mathena of Silver City and Adela Garcia;
19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation was to be held
today at Marlatt Funeral Home in Kent. A vigil service will be held tonight
at 7 at the St. Anthony Chapel of Holy Spirit Parish. The funeral Mass

MICHAELS: Richard A. Michaels, a resident of Pinos Altos and former
resident of Madison, Wis., entered into eternal rest Friday, May 2, at
Gila Regional Medical Center. Cremation has taken place and a memorial

Father Dan Porter officiating. Mr. Michaels was born June 9, 1930, in Madison
to Benjamin Michaels and Mary Rock Michaels. He retired from the city of
Madison as an athletic-field caretaker. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting
and riding horseback. He was a members of the Back Country Horseman Club.
He is survived by his wife, Judith, of Pinos Altos; a brother, Raymond

PLACENCIO: Lorenza “Lore” Placencio passed away Monday, April 28, at
her home in Albuquerque. Calling hours will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at

7, led by her beloved brother-in-law, Deacon Molina. The funeral liturgy
will be celebrated Friday at 10 in the morning at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic
Church in Bayard, with Father Marcos Reyna presiding over the Mass. The
rite of committal and interment will follow at the Gila Cemetery, where
she will be laid to eternal rest. She was born Sept. 11, 1940, in Santa
Rita to Eustacio O. Placencio and Jacinta Chavez Placencio, and lived in
Santa Rita and Bayard during the first several years of her life. She served
on the financial committee and was a Eucharistic minister at the Church
of the Risen Savior and Prince of Peace in Albuquerque. She devotedly loved
and served the Lord. She provided the means to shelter the homeless, helped
those in need, gave generously to the needy, and raised money for the poor
in her annual Crop Walk. She had a deep and unconditional love for people
who surrounded her. She was compassionate, caring, loving and generous.
She served in BMX racing of Albuquerque in various capacities for many
years. She was the president and CEO of Water Conservation Instruments,
and owner and manager of Business Solutions in Albuquerque. She is survived
by her son, Gus Parker, and granddaughter, Haley, of Albuquerque; eight
sisters, Rufina Polanco and her husband, Gilbert, and Rosenda Armendariz
and her husband, Gavino, of Bayard, Epifania Ybarra and her husband, Manuel,
of Tucson, Ariz., Lupe Molina and her husband, Eddie, and Maria Elena Chagolla
and her husband, Norbert, of Peoria, Ariz., Natalie Rolf and her husband,
Allan, of Tidewater, Ore., Socorro Placencio of Henderson, Nev., and Doris
Marin and her husband, George, of Silver City; two brothers, Ben Placencio
and his wife, Rosie, of Alamogordo, and Nick Placencio and his wife, Genevieve,
of Phoenix; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded
in death by her parents and her brother, Eustacio “Venado” Placencio. Casket

angels. Her world revolved around her son and her husband. She will be

GOMEZ: Rafaela Rios Gomez, 80, of Turnerville passed away Friday, May
2, in Gila Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends from
4-6 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home. The prayer vigil will follow at
6 p.m., recited by Mrs. Francis Genera. The funeral Mass will be celebrated
at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, with Father Virgilio
Flores officiating. Interment will be in Fort Bayard National Cemetery.
Mrs. Gomez was born April 12, 1923, in Lordsburg. She was the daughter
of Julian Rios and Presentation Mesa Rios. She was married to Manuel A.
Gomez, who preceded her in death Jan. 7, 1976. She is survived by six children,
Linda Gomez Salas, and Esther Gomez Quesada and her husband, Cristobal,
all of Albuquerque, Andy Rios Gomez of Turnerville, Dolores Rios Pennington
and her husband, Robert, of Tucson, Ariz., Viola Gomez Amador and her husband,
Daniel, of Albuquerque, and Virginia Rios Arriola and her husband, Francisco,
of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Joe "Lendo" Rios and his wife, Mariana,
of Bayard, and Santiago Rios and his wife, Gloria, of Tucson; one sister,
Sara Rios Flores of Arenas Valley; 18 grandchildren, Felix Salas Jr. and
his wife, Rhonda, of Los Lunas, Elizabeth Salas and her fiancé,
Pete Guevera, of Albuquerque, Edward Salas of Albuquerque, Robert Harvey
and his wife, Lucia, of Guadalajara, Mexico, Theresa Quesada, Christina
Quesada Sullivan and her husband, Tim, Andy Gomez Jr. and his wife, Esmeralda,
and Manuel U. Gomez and his companion, Roxanne Sanchez, all of Albuquerque,
Gabriel Underwood of Arenas Valley, Desiree Gomez and her companion, Mark
Delgado, of Albuquerque, Angel Luis Pennington, Robert Renee Pennington,
Edward Daniel Pennington, and Michael Shae Pennington, all of Tucson, Francine
Gomez Amador of Durango, Colo., Sara Ann Alirez of Chicago, and Lynette
Arriola and Francisco Arriola Jr., both of Tucson; 23 great-grandchildren;
one aunt, Carmen Verdugo of Lordsburg; and numerous other relatives and
friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Francisco
Gomez; and two brothers, Manuel Rios and Avel Rios. Mrs. Gomez first and
foremost loved ALL her family. She loved to go exploring while camping,
hiking or rock hunting. Her garden was her pride and joy. She worked for
the Cobre School District in the cafeteria and as a foster grandparent.
She was active with the Catholic Church and was a well-known member of
her community. Pallbearers for Mrs. Gomez will be her grandsons, Felix
Salas Jr., Edward Salas, Robert Harvey, Andy Gomez Jr., Manuel Gomez and
Angel Pennington. Honorary bearers will be Gabriel Underwood, Frankie Arriola
Jr., and Robert Renee Gomez. Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
MICHAELS: Richard A. Michaels, a resident of Pinos Altos and former
resident of Madison, Wis., entered into eternal rest Friday, May 2, at
Gila Regional Medical Center. Cremation will take place and a memorial
service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Baca's Funeral Chapels, with
Father Dan Porter officiating. Mr. Michaels was born June 9, 1930, in Madison
to Benjamin Michaels and Mary Rock Michaels. He retired from the city of
Madison as an athletic-field caretaker. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting
and riding horseback. He was a members of the Back Country Horseman Club.
He is survived by his wife, Judith, of Pinos Altos; a brother, Raymond
Michaels, and his wife, Marie, of Middleton, Wis.; and a sister, Barbara

PLACENCIO: Lorenza "Lore" Placencio, 62, a resident of Albuquerque,
passed away Tuesday at her residence. Arrangements are pending. Entrusted

ACOSTA: Samuel J. Acosta, a lifetime Grant County resident, passed away Wednesday, April 30, in Houston. The prayer vigil, beginning at 7 Sunday evening at Baca’s Funeral Chapels, will be led by Dr. Gilbert Arizaga. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Newman Center, with His Excellency Bishop Ricardo Ramirez presiding and Father Marcos Reyna as co-celebrant. Concluding services and interment will follow at the San Lorenzo Cemetery. He was born Dec. 10, 1938, in Silver City to Augustine Acosta and Martina Jimenez Acosta. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956-58. He returned to Silver City and held positions as finance manager with TransAmerica Corp. and the town of Silver City. He was president/CEO of Chino Federal Credit Union until his retirement. He will be remembered for having served on the board of directors for St. Mary’s Academy until its closure. He was also an active parishioner at St. Francis Newman Center. He served on the Parish Council, directed the United in Ministry Campaigns, as well as being a lector for many years. He also served on the finance committee for the Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces. Surviving are his two daughters, Anna Acosta Estrada and husband, Antonio Estrada, of Dallas, and Deborah Acosta Conder and husband, Carl Conder, of Houston; three grandchildren, Vincent Conder, and Gabriel and Sara Estrada; two brothers, John Acosta of Los Angeles, and Alex Acosta and wife, Gloria, of San Manuel, Ariz.; one sister, Connie Garza, and husband, Roger, of San Antonio, Texas; mother-in-law, Amalia Dominguez of San Lorenzo; and sister-in-law, Josie Dominguez Cochrane and husband, Dan, of Whittier, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Dominguez Acosta, on Dec. 26, 2002. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Jacoby, Martin Rael, Tommy Ryan, Ernie Gomez, Roger Garza Jr. and Peter Acosta.
