MARGARET POLO (Shepherd) (nee Leavy), of Kearny , died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 . She was 71. Born in Maspeth , N.Y. , she lived in Queens before moving to Kearny 50 years ago. She was a cashier with A&P supermarkets in Kearny and Nutley for many years before retiring seven years ago. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Anthony’s Church. Wife of Charles Polo and the late Charles Shepherd; mother of Charles L. Shepherd, Catherine D. Shepherd and James T. Shepherd and his wife, Joan; stepmother of Charles T. Polo and his wife, Susan; grandmother of Danielle Gartz, Carolyn and Michael Niedzenski and Delia and James Shepherd; step-grandmother of Michele and Samantha Polo; great-grandmother of the late Emma Lynn Gartz; niece of the late Brother Benedict James Ginnane, F.S.C. and cousin of Joan Fealey. Funeral services were conducted by the Condon Funeral Home, 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Anthony’s Church, East Newark. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.
GEORGE PLASKOW, of Kearny , died on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 . He was 73. Born in New York City , he lived in Rutherford before moving to Kearny. He was a photographer for Bambergers/Macy’s, Newark, before retiring in 1995. Husband of Marion (nee Levy) of Wood-Ridge; father of David (Stephanie) of Montclair ; brother of Sonya (Ross) Valentiane of Long Island. Funeral services were conducted by the Kohler Funeral Home, 280 Hackensack St., Wood-Ridge. Cremation was at East Ridgelawn Crematory.
CHARLES ROTHFUSS, of Harrison , died on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002. He was 48. Born in Kearny, he lived in Harrison. He died in University Hospital in Newark. Survived by daughters, Tina Varano and Dana Rothfuss; sisters, Harriot Gillings, Florence Smillie, Ruth Ann Stoia, Alice Wojciechowski; his brothers, William, Raymond and Russell Rothfuss and three grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive , Kearny . A funeral mass was held in Holy Cross Church Harrison. A private cremation followed.
GEORGE R. STEINIS, of Willow Spring , N.C. , died on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002. He was 55. He was the owner of Framer’s Market and Gallery in Chapel Hill and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Surviving are his wife, Mary Anne Duffy Steinis; daughter, Samantha Gallacher of Kearny ; grandsons, Matthew J. Gilmore and Ryan Patrick Gallacher; father, Julian G. Steinis of Kearny ; aunt, Beruta Lukshis of North Arlington. Funeral services were conducted by the Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Ennis St. , Furquay-Varina , N.C. MARY J. TOOHEY (nee Jennings ), of Kearny, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. She was 77. Born in New York City, she moved to Kearny 35 years ago. She died in the Milford Manor in West Milford. She was a financial clerk for American Can Company in Jersey City for 35 years before retiring 15 years ago. Wife of the late William. Mother of Joseph E., James J. and Peter W. Toohey. Sister of the late Thomas Jennings. She is survived by seven grandchildren and four nieces and nephews on the Jennings side along with their families. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Cecilia’s Church, Kearny. Interment was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Orange.
FABIAN SOTO, of Harrison , died on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 in the World Trade Center disaster. He was 31. Born in Macara Loja, Ecuador, he moved to the U.S., settling in Harrison in 1993 and residing there for eight years. He was employed as a window washer for ABN Co. in New York City for three weeks. He was a member of the Macara Club, Newark. Beloved husband of Elda Soto (nee Giron). Loving father of Jose Fabian Soto. Cherished son of Mario Soto and Elvira Cumbicos. Dear brother of Patricia, Lorena, Mario, Sandra, Jorge, Roxy, Santiago, Esgar, Alfonse, Rosio, Mercy and Natty. Funeral services will be conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 9:30 a.m.. A funeral mass will be held in Holy Cross Church, Harrison, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield. SOPHIE AKUNOWICZ (nee Gogol), of Kearny, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002. She was 77. Born in Harrison, she moved to Kearny many years ago. She died at home. She was a keypunch operator for Western Electric, Newark, for more than 20 years before retiring 12 years ago. Wife of the late George (August 2002); mother of Michael and his wife, Randie and George and his wife, Lyn; sister of Frank Gogol and Helen Zuklis and the late Steve and Anthony Gogol; grandmother of Stephen, Jennifer and Karen; great-grandmother of Brittany Lyn. ANGELA DORAN (nee Martosewicz), of Harrison and Ortley Beach, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002. She was 76. Born in Carteret, she lived in Harrison for the past 50 years. She died at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was a 1945 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Trenton. She was a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital, Newark and Bell Telephone, Newark, for 10 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Rosary Society and choir member of Holy Cross Church, Harrison. She was also an officer of Parents of Educationally Handicapped Children of Harrison, past treasurer of Mt. Carmel Guild, taught CDD classes at St. Anthony’s Church, East Newark and was a founding member of Pathways to Independence, Kearny. Beloved wife of Edward M. Doran (retired Fire Chief, Harrison Fire Department); loving mother of Teri Doran-Rogers, Edward J., Mary Beth Doran and Peggy Velardo; dear sister of Stanley and Alexander Radomski, Mary Martosewicz; cherished grammy of Edward and Eva Doran and Joseph Velardo. GRACE LATELLA, of Harrison, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002. She was 75. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in Harrison for the past 46 years. She died at home. She worked as a school crossing guard for the Town of Harrison for 24 years. She was a member of V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post 340, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 282 and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Our Lady of Grace Council #402, Harrison Cancer League and Holy Cross Rosary Society, all of Harrison. Beloved wife of Rocco for 53 years; daughter of the late John and Mary Chirichella; devoted mother of Camille and Rocco, Jr.; dear mother-in-law of Carla; dear sister of John, Matthew, Dominick and Joseph Chirichella and the late Michael and Pasquale Chirichella; cherished grandmother of Jennifer, Joseph and Jodi Wood; loving aunt to many nieces and nephews; adored companion of her beloved pet, Brandy. ROBERT A.W. EVERS, of Kearny, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002. He was 56. Born in Newark, he lived in Kearny most of his life. He died at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He graduated from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in history. He worked as a computer programmer with the A.D.P. Company in Roseland for many years. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Grace Council, Harrison, where he was a Fourth Degree Knight. He was also a member of the Color Corps with the Monsignor Doane Assembly, also of Harrison. He was an active member of St. Stephen’s R.C. Church, Kearny, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and sang in the church choir. Loving husband of 23 years to Nancy Lee (nee Merritt); beloved father of Robert, Michael and Lindsay Evers; dear brother of Evelyn Rouski and Walter Drevelus; son-in-law of Donald and Mary Jane Merritt. Funeral services were conducted by the Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass held in St. Stephen’s R.C. Church, Kearny. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.
CONSTANCE I. PAULEY, of North Arlington, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002. She was 88. Born in Bolton, England, she came to Kearny as a child before moving to North Arlington 50 years ago. She died at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville. She was a volunteer worker at the North Arlington Public Library, West Hudson Hospital and the Kearny Boys Club. Beloved wife of the late Warren; devoted mother of Mrs. Joan Dignazio of Venice, Fla.; cherished grandmother of Raymond, Richard and Robert; great-grandmother of Kimberly, Justin, Kayla, Brian and Rachel. LORRAINE M. ROUJON, of Delray Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Sept.14, 2002. She was a long time resident of Kearny before moving to Florida 12 years ago. Wife of Joseph Roujon; mother of Deborah Rogler and Carolyn Forcione; grandmother of Elizabeth, Lauren and Robert Rogler, Michael and Patricia Farrell and Nicole Forcione; great-grandmother of Nicholas Farrell. ROMULO R. “POPI” VILLAVEIRAN, of Kearny, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002. He was 70. Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, he lived in Harrison before moving to Kearny 27 years ago. He died at home. He was a maintenance worker for Kearny Smelting in Harrison for 35 years. He was a member of the Portuguese Culture Club. Husband of the late Alcina (nee Cordero); father of Maura Villaveiran and Maricela Murray; brother of Josefina Gonzalez, and Ventura Villaveiran. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Anthony, Erica and Danielle and dear family in Cuba. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. COLUMBIA BIBBO PETROLLE, of Essex Fells, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002. She was 84. Born in Newark, she lived in the Ironbound section for 66 years before moving to Florham Park. She lived in Florham Park before moving to Essex Fells in 1986. She died in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. She was a N.J. licensed funeral director, license #1626, who owned and operated the Bibbo Funeral Home on Ferry Street in Newark for 40 years. The funeral home was founded by her father, Nicholas Bibbo, in 1880. She also owned and operated the Bibbo-Huelsenbeck Funeral Home on South Orange Avenue, Newark, for 15 years before retiring in 1983. She did her undergraduate work at Douglas College in New Brunswick. She was a graduate of Renuuard Training School for Mortuary Science in New York City. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Roseland, the Rosary Society of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Newark and the St. Mary’s Guild in Newark. She was also a member of the Essex Union and West Hudson Funeral Directors Association and the N.J. State Funeral Directors Association. She was very active along with her late husband Anthony (founder and proprietor of Wear for Weather in Newark) in various civic and political clubs in the Ironbound section of Newark. She was selected as woman of the year several years in a row by various organizations. Beloved wife of the late Anthony Petrolle; devoted mother of Michael A. Petrolle, J.S.C. and Lynne Cannon; dear mother-in-law of Elizabeth A. Petrolle and the late John J. Cannon; cherished grandmother of Laura and Audra Petrolle and Catherine and Jacqueline Cannon; dear sister of Florence D’Alessio and the late Jeanette Alfano. WALTER SEDOROWICZ, of Kearny, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002. He was 83. Born in Irvington, he lived in Belleville before moving to Kearny in 1958. He died at home. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He worked as a truck driver with the Amex Wire Company of Newark for many years, retiring 22 years ago. Beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Navickas); loving father of Joan S. Jurczak of Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla; dear brother of Blanche Wojtonowicz and Stephanie Wancyk.
