Donald Parks
Donald Lee Parks, 27, passed on January 24, 2001. A funeral service
was held January 26 at Dunn's Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Jackson
officiating. Burial was in Norview Gardens in Norwood.
Mr. Parks was born January 23, 1974 in Baltimore, Md. He was a mechanic
using heavy equipment at Danny Russell's Welding and Sandblasting.
Survivors include his parents, Raymond Lee and Mary Jean Stipe Parks,
a brother, William "Chris" Parks and his grandmother, Mildred Taylor of
Star, N.C.
Vera Chandler
A funeral service for Mrs. Vera Howard Chandler, 80, of Oakboro was
held January 27 at Stanly Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary Waisner and
the Rev. Wayne Chandler officiating. She passed on January 24, 2001 at
Carolinas Medical Center.
Mrs. Chandler was born October 16, 1920 in Stanly County, the daughter
of Oliver A. and Elizabeth Cagle Howard. She was a retired employee of
Wiscassett Mill Co.
Survivors include her husband, Alton Chandler of the home; three sons,
the Rev. Wayne Chandler of Fayetteville, N.C., Gary Chandler of Oakboro
and Richard Chandler of Fayetteville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
Jan Herbert
Jan Ellis Purser Herbert passed on January 23, 2001 at Stanly Memorial
Hospital. She was 56. A funeral service was held January 26 at Hartsell
Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Vaughn presiding.
She was born November 24, 1942 in Stanly County, the daughter of Lila
Stallings Purser and Ellis Miller Purser. She was married to the late Wayne
Bradford Herbert. She was a member of New London United Methodist Church
and a retired secretary at East Albemarle School. She was a graduate of
Kings business College, Charlotte and a natural self-taught artist. She
enjoyed art and crafts. One of her accomplishments was designing a cross
stitchery for the Pfeiffer University Falcon Mascot that is displayed in
the lobby of Pfeiffer Gym.
Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Herbert of Albemarle; a daughter,
Lorie Starke of Richfield and sister and brother-in-law Carolyn Darleen
and Bill Burgess of Albemarle and five grandchildren.
Lucy McCoy
A funeral service for Lucy Junita Tucker McCoy, 88, of Concord, was
held January 24 at Hartsell Funeral Chapel in Midland with the Rev. Asa
Farris presiding. Burial was in Running Creek Primitive Baptist Church
in Midland. She passed on January 22, 2001 at Avanta of Concord.
Mrs. McCoy was born August 12, 1912 in Stanly County. Her parents were
Adam Elvin and Katie Tucker Tucker. She was a retired weaver with Cannon
Mills where she worked for 30 years. She was married to the late Warren
C. McCoy and was a member of Cold Water Baptist Church.
Survivors include three nephews, Rodney Tucker of Locust, Dale Tucker
of Charlotte and Ronald McCoy of Concord.

Lula Helms
Mrs. Lula Macie Hinson Helms, 77, died June 9, 2001 at Stanly Memorial
Hospital. A graveside service was held June 13 at Aquadale Baptist Church
cemetery with Rev. Lawrence Walton officiating.
Mrs. Helms was born February 17, 1924 in Stanly County. Her parents
were Minnie Efird Hinson and Jonah Abury Hinson. She was a World War II
Veteran of the United States Navy and received an Honorable discharge August
23, 1945. She worked for Wiscassett Mills for 25 years, and was a registered
CNA for 25 years. She worked for Stanly County Hospital and in the homes
of the elderly. She was a faithful member of Albemarle Seventh Day Adventist
church and held many offices.
Survivors include her husband, James Clayton Helms of the home; a daughter,
Sibyl Austin of Marshville; and two sisters, Olar Hinson Coley and Cletus
Hinson Haynes, both of Albemarle.
Pauline Drye
Pauline Elizabeth Talley Drye, 82, of Oakboro, died June 12, 2001 at
Britthaven of Piedmont. A funeral service was held June 15 at Big Lick
Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Springer and Rev. Larry Linker, her former
pastor officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Drye was born June 21, 1918 in Cabarrus County. She was the daughter
of Gennie Furr Talley and Paul Wilson Talley. She worked at Cannon Mills
as a weaver. She was married to the late Johnnie Adam Drye who died in
1997. She was a member and former Sunday School teacher and WMU member
at Big Lick Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Winfred Drye and Ronald Lee Drye,
both of Oakboro; a daughter, Linda Paulette Griffin of Oakboro; two sisters,
Vernie Hathcock of Stanfield and Hazel Helms of Oakboro; a brother, Charlie
Talley of Stanfield; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Charles Mullis
Charles Randy Mullis, 49, of Monroe, died June 9, 2001 at Mercy Hospital.
A funeral service was held June 12 at Crooked Creek Primitive Baptist Church
in Monroe. Rev. Gary McLaine officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Mullis was born December 8, 1951 in Union County. His parents were
Polly Harkey and the late Earl Thomas Mullis. He was a mechanic and did
floor covering work. He was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church in Monroe.
Survivors include his mother Polly Harkey, his wife, Betty Lorraine
Mullis of Monroe; a daughter, Kim Efird of Marshville; three sons, Dennis
M. Wheeler of Monroe, Kevin Reid Wheeler and Daniel Wheeler, both of Marshville;
and two brothers, Lane Mullis of Monroe and Danny Mullis of Midland.
Odessa Honeycutt
A funeral service for Odessa Mae Honeycutt was held June 18, 2001 at
Hartsell Chapel in Midland. She died June 15 at Brian Center and she was
90 years old. Dr. Marvin Tyson and Dr. Michael Lynn Sasser presided. Burial
was in United Love Baptist Church cemetery. She was a charter member of
the church.
Mrs. Honeycutt was born January 1, 1911 in Union County and lived in
Midland. Her parents were Minnie Smith Honeycutt and Lester L. Honeycutt.
She was a cashier at the Coin Store.
Survivors include a daughter, Daris Mullis of Midland; a brother, Earl
(Pete) Honeycutt of Albemarle; a sister, Mrs. Lucille Poplin of Albemarle;
six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Raymond Eli Lowder
Funeral services for Raymond Eli Lowder, 84, of Austin Road, Albemarle,
were held November 5 at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel,
Rev. Gary Hunsucker presiding. Burial was in Canton Baptist Church cemetery
in Albemarle.
Mr. Lowder died on November 2, 2001, at Stanly Memorial Hospital. He
was born on November 6, 1916, in Stanly County, son of Eunice Hatley and
James Henry Lowder. He was married to the late Viola Bell Hartsell Lowder.
He was a retired tractor mechanic and attended Canton Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Lowder of Albemarle; daughters, Carolyn
L. Culp of Gold Hill, Joyce L. Grimmitt of Charlotte, and Nancy L. Downer
of Locust; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Mary Boyd Ross
Funeral services for Mary Boyd Hawkins Ross, 85, of Badin Road, Albemarle,
were held November 2 at Hartsell Funeral Home, Rev. Ben Wilson and Rev.
Kenneth Lambert presiding. Burial was in Stanly Gardens of Memory.
Mrs. Ross died on October 30, 2001 at Stanly Memorial Hospital. She
was born on September 4, 1916 in Stanly County, daughter of Minnie Carpenter
and Plummer Oscar Hawkins. She was married to the late Lee "Buck" Ross.
Her step-father was F.A. Wentz.
She graduated from Norwood High School in 1935 and attended Queens
College. She enjoyed bridge, was a member of Central United Methodist,
and was a retired sewer at Wiscassett Mill.
Survivors include a son, Michael Lee Ross of Albemarle; grandchildren,
David Michael Ross of Albemarle and Leanne Ross of Raleigh; and several
nieces and nephews.
William Leroy Kiker
Funeral services for William Leroy Kiker, 81, of Sikes Mill Road, Monroe,
were held November 2 at Crooked Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Elder Larry
Austin and Rev. George Gouge presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Kiker died on October 31, 2001, at Union Regional Medical Center
in Monroe. He was born on August 7, 1920, in Union County, son of Beddie
Merniva Baucom and Augustus Marsh Kiker. He was a retired farm.
Survivors include a daughter, Colon Wofford of Monroe; brother, Norman
Kiker of Monroe; sisters, Evelyn Page and Ruth Rushing of Monroe; four
grandchildreh and 10 great grandchildren.
Gladys Russell Howard
Funeral services for Mrs. Gladys Elizabeth Russell Howard, 77, of Long
Street, Albemarle, were held December 15 at Grace Baptist Church, Rev.
Sid Martin presiding. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Park.
Mrs. Howard died on December 13, 2001 at her home. She was born on
August 11, 1924 in Albemarle to Nora Chance and Dan Russell. She was married
to the late J.B. Howard and was retired from Wiscassett Mill. Her church
membership was at Grace Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Chad Howard of Concord; brothers, D.N. Russell
of Albemarle, Donald Russell of Stanfield, Joel Russell of Albemarle and
Ned Russell of New London; sister, Dean Ingold; grandchildren, Terry Napier
and Jay Howard; great grandchildren, Nathan Little, Troy Howard, and Carson
Howard.
Bill Jo Smith
Funeral services for infant Bill Jo Smith were held December 15 at
White Crest Baptist Church cemetery in Mt. Gilead, Rev. Danny Laws presiding.
Bill died on December 13, 2001 at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include parents, Henry Oran Smith and Billi Jo Kalaczynski,
both of Mt. Gilead; paternal great grandmother, Betty D. Smith of Mt. Gilead;
paternal grandparents, Edward and Nesrin O. Smith of Mt. Gilead; maternal
grandparents, William Joseph and Kim Wentz of Mt. Gilead; and maternal
great grandfather, Ismet Oran of Izmire, Turkey.
Thaddeus Whitley Furr
Funeral services for Thaddeus Whitley Furr, 89, of Albemarle were held
December 16 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Oakboro, Rev. Phillip Hunter
presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Furr died on December 14, 2001 at the North Carolina Lutheran
Nursing Home. She was born August 27, 1912 in Stanly County to Creita Barbee
and Virgil P. Whitley. Mrs. Furr was retired as an LPN with Stanly Memorial
Hospital.
She graduated from Greensboro College with a degree in business and
Central Piedmont College with a degree in nursing. In retirement she was
a private duty nurse for many years.
A past Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Grove, she was a member of
Treasured Friends, Eastern Star, Business Professional Women's Club, and
the Mildred Crotts Garden Club. She was also an avid traveler.
Survivors include a son, Harold W. Furr of Albemarle; daughters, Lucille
Mauldin of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mildred Whitley of Albemarle; 6 grandchildren;
12 great grandchildfren; and 2 great great grandchildren.
Holly Rene'e Love
Funeral services for infant Holly Rene'e Love of Rushing Road, Stanfield,

Colen Furr Austin
Funeral services for Mrs. Colen Furr Austin, 93, of Oakboro were held

December 16, 2001at Britthaven of Piedmont. She was born July 1, 1908 in
Stanly County to Rosa Hopkins and Charlie Furr. Mrs. Furr was married to
the late Pearl Vernon Austin. She was the oldest member of Mineral Springs
Baptist.
Survivors include sons, Cecil Austin of Oakboro and Shelton Austin
of Albemarle; daughter Betty Whitley of Oakboro; brothers, Leonard Furr
of Oakboro; sisters, Lois Furr Coble and Ruby Furr Tucker of Oakboro; 7

Dewitt Mills
Funeral services for Dewitt Mills, 79, of Dunlap Road, Albemarle, were
held December 17 at Hartsell Funeral Home, Rev. Ronald Honeycutt presiding.
Burial was in Stanly Gardens of Memory in Albemarle. Mr. Mills died on
December 14, 2001 at his home. He was born June 21, 1922 in Albemarle to
Ester Mae Dennis and George Stamie Mills. Mr. Mills was retired from the
city of Albemarle and served in the Army in World War II. His church membership
was at Anderson Grove Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Vernie Louise Poplin Mills of Albemarle;
sons, Paul Stephen Mills of Oakboro and Matthew Mark Mills of Albemarle;

Jessie Earp Sharpe
Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Lee Earp Sharpe, 89, of Dutch Road,
Mt. Pleasant will be held today at 11 am at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord,
Rev. Randy Kivett and Rev. Scott Kivett presiding. Burial will be in Forest
Lawn West cemetery in Charlotte.
Mrs. Sharpe died on December 17, 2001 at NorthEast Medical Center.
She was born January 5, 1912 in Mint Hill to Hattie Reams and Harris Earp.
She was married to the late Earl Thomas Sharpe and was retired from American
and Efird.
Mrs. Earp was a resident of the Carebridge Assisted Living Center in
Mt. Pleasant and her church membership was at Plaza Road Baptist.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Gloria Sharpe
of Mt. Pleasant; sisters, Eva Isley and Sue Taylor of Burlingtron and Miss
Lillian Mae Sharpe of Charlotte; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
