Ann S. Cozart

A graveside funeral for Ann Short Cozart, 61, of 215 Foxcroft Rd., who died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital, was conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 26, in Person Memorial Cemetery by the Rev. Tommy Robertson and the Rev. Willie Parker.
Mrs. Cozart was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Clemson DeWitt and Ruth Jones Short.
Surviving are her husband, Albert (Jack) Cozart Jr.; a daughter, Jacqueline C. Dozar of Durham; two brothers, Charles DeWitt Short of Marshfield, Mass. and William (Bill) LaVelle Short of Monterey, Calif.; and a sister, Nita S. Green of Roxboro.
Pallbearers were Grady Cozart, Reggie Thompson, Gary Green, Christopher Crabtree and Harold Davis.

Washington Daye

ROUGEMONT The funeral for Washington Daye, 90, of 4243 Mt. Harmony Church Rd., who died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Oct. 27, at Siloam Missionary Baptist Church in Rougemont by the Rev. Vaughan Brayboy. Burial will be in the Hawley Family Cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Moore of Durham, Annie Lee Daye of the home, Josephine Moore and Gloria Daye, both of Roxboro; four sons, Robert Daye of Durham, Thelbert Daye and Donald Daye, both of Roxboro and David Daye of the home; a sister, Alma D. Long of Durham; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Hester, Whitted and Daye Funeral Service.

Martha W. Little

The funeral for Martha Wilson Little, 85, formerly of Shotwell Street, who died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, in Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in the Olive Branch Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Little was a native of Halifax County, Va., the daughter of the late Silas J. and Myrtle Nelson Wilson.
She was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Bernice Snead and Betty Long, both of Roxboro; six sisters, Suelene Knight of San Diego, Calif., Willie Long of Roxboro, Janie Reaves and Ophelia Brogden, both of South Boston, Va., Elena Elliott of Cluster Springs, Va. and Edna Wilson of Blackstone, Va.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews Ricky Brogden, Raymond Butler, Jeremy Whitfield, Danny Pulliam, Mitch Regan, Emmitt Long Jr., Charles Pulliam and Bradley Regan.
Visitation will tonight, Oct. 27, from 7 to 8:30 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Liz and Danny Pulliam, 225 Montpelier Ave.

Effie E. Newman

The funeral for Effie Esther Newman, 78, of 112 Cleveland Ln., who died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 1 p.m., today, Oct. 27, in Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Marcus Vann. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Newman was a native of Person County.
She was a member of Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Jo Ann Newman of Roxboro, Gracie Turner of Levinworth, Kan. and Norma Jean Carey of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Robert Newman of Roxboro and Allen Newman of Miami, Fla.; a brother, Melvin Pulliam of Baltimore, Md.; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home.

Ethel J. Saylor

The funeral for Ethel Jay Saylor, 82, of 490 Charlie Jay Rd., who died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, in Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry Busby and the Rev. Marcus Vann. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Saylor was a member of Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Beunia Jay of Philadelphia, Pa. and Penroe Crawley of Semora; two brothers, Willie Jay of Roxboro and Lee Davis Jay of Baltimore, Md.

Classie J. Shaw

The funeral for Classie Jacobs Shaw, 86, of 639 Jim Morton Rd., who died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, in her home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Union Grove Baptist Church in Hurdle Mills by the Rev. Rufus Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five sons, Henderson Shaw of Columbus, Ohio; Alex Shaw Jr. and James Shaw, both of Hurdle Mills; Alvin Shaw and Johnny Shaw, both of the home; four daughters, Kathy Harshaw of Cedar Grove, Josie Simmons of Goldsboro, Mildred Bradsher of Roxboro and Fannie Wade of Hurdle Mills; a sister, Katie Long of Hurdle Mills; 30 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Oct. 27, at the church.

George M. Whitfield

The funeral for George Martin Whitfield, 63, of 3410 Cates Mills Rd., who died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, in Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 3 p.m., today, Oct. 27, in Somerset Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenny Dubnick and the Rev. Jonathan Brown. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Whitfield was a native of Person County, the son of Elizabeth Tingen Whitfield of Roxboro, who survives, and the late Samuel Martin Whitfield.
He was owner and operator of Whitfield Texaco for many years and was a former employee of Piedmont Maintenance.
He was a member of Somerset Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Alice Zimmerman Whitfield; six children, Barry Whitfield of Spartanburg, S.C.; George Martin Whitfield Jr., Wendi W. Gentry, Annette W. Eakes, Kimberly P. Lowery and Wesley Whitfield, all of Roxboro; four sisters, Virginia W. Twifford of Baltimore, Md.; Mary W. Evans and Clara W. Eakes, both of Roxboro and Joan W. Hill of Rougemont; and 12 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Nicki Allen, Billy Lee, George Griles, Raymond Smith, Ward Crews, Maurice Hill, Tom Ellington and Allen Woody.
Memorials may be made to Somerset Baptist Church, 1835 Old Durham Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Maggie J. Wrenn

The funeral for Maggie Jewell Wrenn, 93 of 99 Jewell Wrenn Rd., who died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, in Person Memorial Hospital following a brief illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Oct. 27, in Montwood Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott Thomas and the Rev. Martin Hall. Burial will be in Mill Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Ms. Wrenn was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Sidney Thomas and Vessie Pulliam Wrenn.
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.
She was a member of Montwood Baptist Church.
Surviving are four nieces, Vickie G. Moore, Yolanda W. Day and Phyllis W. Powell, all of Roxboro and Gayla W. Winstead of Durham; two nephews, Landis Gregory of Roxboro and Sidney Thomas Wrenn of Murfreesboro and nine great-nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ben Shotwell, Martin Stone, Mike Shotwell, David Powell, Weldon Reaves and Hugh Holt Jr.
