B.E. 'BILL' HUFFINE
B.E. "Bill" Huffine of Wilmington, North Carolina, died Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 1, 1925, in Putnam County, Tennessee, to Melvin C. Huffine and Flossie Huffine.
After attending Tennessee Technological Institute in Cookeville, Tennessee, Mr. Huffine worked in the housing and construction industry before moving to Wilmington in 1957 where he remained active as a real estate and business broker until his death.
Mr. Huffine was active in professional and civic affairs, having served as President of the Wilmington Board of Realtors and the North Carolina Azalea Festival, and as an Elder and Clerk of the Session for St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was an avid hunter and sportsman and served as President of the North Carolina Trial Association, and as a member of the Advisory Committee of the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.
Mr. Huffine is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha E. Huffine a daughter, Susan H. Mercer and husband Jeff Mercer; a son, David E. Huffine and wife Anne B. Huffine; five grandchildren, Heather M. Mercer, Justin E. Mercer, Lauren E. Mercer, William B. Huffine and Leigh A. Huffine, all of Wilmington; and one nephew, Richard C. Patton of Palm Harbor Florida.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church by Rev. Steven Hein and Rev. David Jenkins. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John J. Burney Jr., Bruce B. Cameron Jr., W. Hall Watters, Charles W. Wells, William B. Liles and Delmer B. Seitter. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Evans Bible Class of St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church and H.C. "Slim" Wallace.

ALMA EARLE FULLWOOD
ELIZABETHTOWN - Alma Earle Fullwood, 79, died Wednesday, February 28th, 2001, at home. She was retired as a floral artist associated with several florists in Wilmington and Wallace Florist in Elizabethtown.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 3rd at 3:00 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery, 520 North 15th Street, Wilmington, NC, with the Reverend David Elks officiating.
Survivors include: a sister, Dorothy Merritt of Scotts Hill, NC; a brother, Rodney Fullwood of Jacksonville, FL; and her dear and loving friend, Mattie Ward of ElizabethTown; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, March 2nd from 2 - 4 at Kinlaw Funeral Home in Elizabethtown and from 7 - 9 at Andrews Mortuary, Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road in Wilmington.

JAMES IAN McPHERSON PHILLIPS
James Ian McPherson Phillips of Castle Hayne died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Cape Fear Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on June 14, 1913, and was the son of the late Peter Anderson Phillips and Sarah Rogers Phillips, and was preceded in death by his sister Miss Clara Phillips.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Vera Forshner Phillips of the home; two sisters, Sadie Lumby of Ontario, Canada, and Ellen Scragg of Ottawa, Canada, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harvey and Gladys Forshner of Edmonton, Alberta.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at Oakdale Cemetery by Fred Padrick.

IRMA NANCY WEBB WHEELER
Irma Nancy Webb Wheeler, 77, lately of Bolivia, NC, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington, NC, after a battle with ovarian cancer. Mrs. Wheeler was born Sept. 8, 1923, in Meadowview, VA, and was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene W. Wheeler, in 1992, her parents, six brothers and two sisters. She was a founding member of West Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, VA, and a long-standing member of the Arthur Davis Sunday School Class. She retired from John Randolph Hospital as a Dietetic Technician and a consultant to a medical practice in Hopewell. She earlier graduated from two of Virginia's community colleges. Throughout her life she brought joy to those who knew her and frequently shared her expert abilities in the needle Arts: quilting, crochet and knitting.
Ms. Wheeler is survived by her daughter, Rebecca and her husband George Holdsworth of Bolivia, NC, and their daughters, Content and Nancy Holdsworth of Raleigh, NC; her son, Dwight and daughter-in-law Donna, and their two sons, Christian and Kevin, of Prince George, VA; daughter, Stephanie and husband Allen Thompson, and their son, Jack of Fayetteville, NC; daughter, Susanne and husband David Bohon of Ruthville, VA, Susanne and former husband Larry Sprague's daughter, Michelle and her husband, Brooks Nunnally of Atlanta, GA; her twin sister, Amanda Sprague of Glen Allen, VA; two sisters, Mary Counts and Neta Findley, both of Meadowview, VA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, but was especially close to Joe and Don Findley and Harold Counts and his friend Frankie Dobbins. The family will receive friends, Sunday, March 4, 2001, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, March 5, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Rev. John Lindsay, Pastor of West Hopewell Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in the Appomattox Cemetery.

SALLY MITCHELL METZGER
Sally Mitchell Metzger, 74, of 1080 St. Joseph Street, Carolina Beach, NC, died Monday, February 26, 2001, at Mariner Health Care in Wilmington, NC.
She is survived by her husband, William E. Metzger Jr. of the home; two daughters, Patricia Anderson and Catherine Patrick, both of Florence, SC; three grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Peet, and husband, Bill of Indianapolis, IN.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Society or the American Heart Assoc.
PHILIP L. PETTIJOHN
SHALLOTTE - Philip L. Pettijohn, 49, formerly of Pittsfield, MA, departed this life after battling cancer, on Wednesday, February 28, 2001, in the Brunswick Community Hospital.
Mr. Pettijohn was born on April 23, 1951, in Pittsfield, MA. He was a son of Virginia Ann Frye Pettijohn and the late Donald Pettijohn.
Mr. Pettijohn was a graduate of Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, MA, a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law in Hartford, CN, and a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association. He gave back to his communities throughout his life by serving on the Board of Directors of the NAACP of Monroe County and also was on the Monroe County Cultural Commission, Key West, FL. From 1982 to 1992 he was involved with the Christian Center of Pittsfield, Inc., and volunteered his services to the Berkshire Theatre Festival, as well as working at the Dorothy Amos Early Childhood Education Center. He most recently enjoyed working at the Manice Education Center in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in Florida, MA.
In addition to his mother, he leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Deborah Pettijohn, and his mother-in-law, Ginger Sugrue, both of Shallotte, NC, as well as his loving son, Winthrop Christell Evans and his wife, Denni, and granddaughter, Arianna Marlow Evans, and his daughter, Morgan Bryant, all of Pittsfield. He will be sadly missed by one brother; Alfred Pettijohn and wife, Lisa, Scottsdale, AZ, and five sisters; Jane Hazel St. John, Eve Pettijohn, Janis Anderson and husband, Dwayne, Paula Pettijohn, and Gail Pettijohn Waton, all of Pittsfield, as well as his brother-in-law, Dennis Waton, Orlando, FL; also many sisters and brothers-in-law of his wife's family and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2001 at the Price Memorial AME Zion Church, 163 Linden Street, Pittsfield, MA, by the Rev. Willard Durant.
