   JAMES OLIVER WOODWARD JR. 
   James Oliver Woodward Jr., age 63, of Wilmington, formerly of Alexander County, died Monday, July 24, 2000 in Pender County as the result of a boating accident. A memorial service in his memory and in celebration of his life at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Robert L. Salzgeber on Sunday, August 6, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. 
   Mr. Woodward's interment was conducted on July 27, 2000 in the Hiddenite Cemetery in Alexander County. 
   
   THOMPSON 'TOMMY' JONES 
   Thompson "Tommy" Jones, 77, of Rocky Point died Aug. 2 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. A memorial service with Masonic rites will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with the Rev. Eric Jones officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. 
   He was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Navy. 
   Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Laura Jones Watts of Rocky Point; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Shepard of Raleigh; 2 sons; Stan T. Jones and George Lee Jones both of Jacksonville; a sister, Gertrude Jones Aydlett of Jacksonville; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

   KERMIT LEE 
   VESTAL, N.Y. - Kermit Lee, 96, of Vestal, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000. He was predeceased by his wife, Helena; a son, Kermit Lee Jr.; and a daughter, Jean Lee Pappenheimer. He is survived by two granddaughters, Yvonne Schanck and Debra Waldron; three great-grandchildren, John and Maggie Waldron, Amanda Schanck; three great-great-grandchildren, Liza, Brittany and Alexis; one sister, Zena LaBough, Palm Bay, Fla.; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a retired Endicott Johnson Corp. employee. He attended Penn State University and was Teacher for a short time. Kermit was also an avid golfer and a lifelong New York Yankee fan. He was a former member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington. 
   Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Derek Jeters Turn 2 Foundation, PO Box 19158, Kalamazoo, Mich. 49109. The foundation focuses on substance abuse, prevention, healthy lifestyles, academic achievement and leadership development among youths.

   HUGH C. SANDLIN 
   VERONA, NC - Hugh C. Sandlin, 86, of the Verona community of Onslow County, died Thursday, August 3, 2000 at Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Verona United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park. 
   Mr. Sandlin was a veteran of the US Army. He formerly served as a Director of Jones-Onslow EMC, Director of Marine Federal Credit Union, President of AFG-2065, was a charter member of the New River Lions Club, a life-long member of the Verona United Methodist Church. Mr. Sandlin also was a former Director of Penslow Health Clinic, President of the Cape Fear Lung Association and was a former NC State House Representative. 
   He is the son of the late Henry and Lyde Mills Sandlin. 
   Survivors include his wife, Juanita M. Sandlin of Verona; two sons, John M. Sandlin of Wrightsville Beach and Hugh C. Sandlin Jr. of Jacksonville; and 3 grandchildren. 
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 - 9 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville.

   MRS. ELOISE GLISSON CROOM 
   Mrs. Eloise Glisson Croom, 81, of Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000, at the home. 
   Mrs. Croom was born December 13, 1918 in Wayne County, the daughter of the late Elbert and Annie Bradshaw Glisson. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Ladies Choir of Davis Health Care Center and was co-owner of The Chart House Seafood Restaurant in Wrightsboro until 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Croom and a son Gerald Gregg Croom. 
   Survivors include her sons Albert Byron Croom and wife Barbara of Coinjock, NC, Gordon Reece Croom and Beverly Croom of Castle Hayne, her daughters Vera Croom of Castle Hayne, Cynthia Croom Edwards and husband Bill, of Hope Mills, NC, Sylvia Lynn Croom of Wrightsville Beach, a daughter-in-law Sonia Croom of Lake Waccamaw, six grandchildren Keith, Kelly, Vickie, Renee, Kevin, Braxton and four great-grandchildren James, Mark, Alexandra, David. 
   Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 5, 2000 at Calvary Baptist Church by the Reverend Rudy Shepard. The interment will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens,

   PAUL BENJAMIN AVANT 
   CHADBOURN - Mr. Paul Benjamin Avant, 82, of Chadbourn died Thursday at Columbus County Hospital, Whiteville. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Chadbourn United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. 
   He was the husband of the late Beatrice Honeycutt Avant and the son of the late Wade and Elizabeth Richardson Avant. Mr. Avant had served as mayor of Chadbourn and was a charter member of the Chadbourn Fire and Rescue Squad. He also was a member of the Chadbourn United Methodist Church and retired from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. 
   Surviving family include three daughters, Beth A. Rector of Chadbourn, Paula A. Friedriches of Hubert, Laura A. Hinson of Whiteville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

   ARDEN CLARENCE VAN DORN 
   Arden Clarence Van Dorn of Wilmington, NC died Wednesday, August 2, 2000 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. 
   He was born August 6, 1921 in Josephine, Oregon, son of the late James Alonzo and Elsie Ella Kraft Van Dorn. 
   Mr. Van Dorn retired from Wilmington Star-News after twenty-five years of service. He was a member of the Wilmington Model Airplane Club. 
   Surviving are his wife, Lola Kinlaw Van Dorn; two children, Gayle Coleman and husband James of Chattanooga, TN, and Eric Barwick of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Berna E. Trumpour of Goldhill, OR; two step grandchildren, Jamie Coleman and Dawn Coleman; and a special friend and co-worker, Tate Bennett. 
   Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 5, 2000 in Oleander Memorial Gardens by Rev. Mike Meshaw.

   JERRY EUGENEBURCKHALTER 
   Jerry Eugene Burckhalter of Leland, NC died Tuesday, August 1, 2000 in Camden, SC. 
   He was born August 28,1950 in Wilmington, NC, son of Ammie Butler Burckhalter and the late Eugene Burckhalter. 
   Mr. Burckhalter worked in the local motion picture industry, and was an avid Harley Davidson rider. 
   Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Faye Moore Burckhalter of the home; three children, Anna Burckhalter, Walter Burckhalter, and Buck Burckhalter; two grandchildren, Tavis Burckhalter and Hunter Nelson; one brother, Donnie Burckhalter; and two sisters, Teresa Smith and Geannie Blackburn. 
   Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 5, 2000 at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park,

   JOHN (JACK) RHEM JR. 
   John Rhem Jr. of 10274 Cornwallis Circle, Leland, NC, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer. 
   John was born September 26, 1929 in Craven County, NC, son of the late John and Bessie Rhem. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Rhem Sharpe. 
   Mr. Rhem was the owner of R & M Environmental Services, Inc., and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church where he served as President of the Men's Club. 
   He was a devoted husband and companion to Martha Scarboro Rhem; and loving father and teacher to his daughter, Debra Rhem of Wilmington. He was loved as "Poppy" by his two granddaughters, Shannon Lee Ormsby and Lesley Faye Ormsby; and by his great-granddaughter, Marissa Nicole Huffham, all of Wilmington. Also surviving, are his two sisters, Edna Rhem Mohorn of Raleigh, NC and Annabelle Rhem Kilpatrick of Kinston, NC; a brother-in-law, Paul Sharpe of Raleigh, NC; and several nieces and nephews. 
   Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, 409 South Fifth Street, Wilmington, with the Reverend James Malloy and Reverend Samuel Williams officiating. 
   A private burial service will be held at Oleander Memorial Gardens on Monday. 
   The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service, and other times will be at the home.

   EMMA J. KENNISON LEWIS 
   Emma J. Kennison Lewis of Wilmington, NC died August 2, 2000 at Liberty Commons Nursing Center. 
   She was born November 10, 1907 in Smithfield, PA, daughter of the late John and Donna Kisinger Kennison, and was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence H. "Peck" Lewis, and her son James Andrew Lewis. 
   Surviving are three grandchildren, Joyce Lewis, Janet Henry and husband Greg, all of Wilmington, NC, and Shelly Teixeira of Santa Clara, CA; two sisters, Iona Whoolery and husband Earl of Mesa, AZ and Melzina "Mellie" Wilson of Smithfield, PA; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Cooley Lewis of Wilmington, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. 
   Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 4, 2000 in Greenlawn Memorial Park by Rev. Bo Baker.
