  ESTHER HAZEL STRICKLAND 
   Esther Hazel Strickland Byrd, 87, formerly of Dunn and Supply, NC, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at her home in Raleigh. Ms. Byrd was born May 18, 1913, in Sampson County to the late William Henry and Fannie Draughon Strickland. She was a graduate of Campbell University. 
   Ms. Byrd was married to the late Luther Stevens Byrd and is survived by her daughter, Hazel Byrd Slocumb and her husband, John, of Raleigh; her son, Luther Stevens Byrd Jr. of Richmond, Virginia; two grand|children, John Allen Slocumb Jr. and his wife, Janet of Chicago, Illinois, and William Stevens Slocumb of Raleigh; close family friend, Norman Campbell of Richmond, Virginia, and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. 
   Ms. Byrd was a charter member of Coastline Rescue Squad at Holden Beach, NC, serving as its president for two years. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church in Supply and active in the affairs of her church and community until her illness. 
   The family will receive family and friends at Sharon United Methodist Church, Supply, NC, from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday evening, August 1, 2000. A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, August 2, 2000 at Sharon United Methodist Church, Supply, NC, with graveside services at 4:00 p.m. at Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Dunn, NC.

  MR. PAUL McDONALD GAINEY 
   Mr. Paul McDonald Gainey, 80, of 1585 Sunny Trail N.E., Leland, NC, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at his residence. 
   Mr. Gainey was born January 29, 1920, in Brunswick County, the son of the late Thomas S. and Elizabeth Nelson Gainey. Mr. Gainey had retired from E.W. Godwin & Sons Inc. in 1980 after many years of employment. He was preceded in death by four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. 
   Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Cornelia Mintz Gainey of the home, three daughters Harriett Gainey of Whiteville, Paulette McCleland and husband Bob of Leland, Sandi Batson and husband Tim of Wilmington, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
   There will be no funeral service at this time.

   Caulder, James L., 55, of Wilmington died July 10 in Fernandina, Fla. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, Wrightsville Beach.

   MRS. ADELE POTTER DAVIS WATSON 
   Mrs. Adele Potter Davis Watson, 82, of Mariner Health Care Center, died Monday, July 31, 2000. 
   Mrs. Watson was born November 6, 1917 in Sampson County, the daughter of the late William P. and Emma Langston Potter. She was a member of Friendship Methodist Church in Duplin County and was preceded in death by her husband, Maco P. Watson, a son, Monte Ray Watson, and a granddaughter, Kimberly Lynn Pridgen. 
   Survivors include her two sons, James W. Davis Jr. and wife Joan of Wilmington, William P. Watson Sr. and wife Pam of Fayetteville, three daughters, Brenda Jones and husband Alan of Williamstown, New Jersey, Mrs. Ruby Watkins of Castle Hayne, Mrs. Charlona Oxendine of Raleigh, one daughter-in-law, Judy Watson West, eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. 
   Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 3, 2000 in the Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Oleander Chapel, by the Reverends Haywood and Judy Kelly. The interment will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens. 
   Casketbearers will be Benjamin Macomber, Jonathan Macomber, Michael Arnold, Melvin L. Watkins Jr., Samuel J. Edwards, and Rev. James Feamster. Honorary casketbearers will be Roger Pittman, Jennings Byan, Patrick Davis, Harold Davis, Robert E. Pridgen and Frank Bennett.

   RICHARD G. HIGHT 
   Richard G. Hight, 70, of 1117 Futch Creek Road, Wilmington, NC, died Sunday, July 30, 2000 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, Wilmington, NC. 
   Mr. Hight is survived by his wife, Evelyn S. Hight of the home; one daughter, Marnie H. Brooks of Raleigh, NC; one son, Eric R. Hight of Phoenix, AZ; and 2 grandchildren. 
   A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church, 10255 US Hwy. 17, Wilmington, NC.

   JOSEPHINE G. SCHABER 
   Josephine G. Schaber was called home by her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 28, 2000 at 12:01 p.m. 
   She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Paul H. Schaber, one daughter, Susan, and one son, Richard. 
   Jay fought a long battle with cancer. A memorial service for Jay will be announced at a later date. 
   In lieu of flowers a heart felt donation to Breast Cancer Research Institution would be appreciated. 
   
   MR. AUSTIN 'DICK' WILLIAM WELLS 
   WATHA - Austin "Dick" William Wells, age 91, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Pender Memorial Hospital. 
   Mr. Wells was born October 7, 1908, in Pender County and was the son of the late John David and Martha Lizabeth Wells. He was predeceased by his wife, Mae Hardison Wells. 
   He was a member of Coras Grove PFWB Church and was a retired Pender County Farmer. 
   Surviving are his sons, Milton Ray Wells Sr. and wife, Linda, and Gene Austin Wells and wife, Kay, all of Watha; grandchildren, Natalie Priest, Milton Ray Wells Jr., Amery B. Wells, William Christopher Wells, and Gina Wells Samia; three great-grand|children; and brothers, Joseph R. Wells of Watha and Thomas E. Wells of Burgaw. 
   Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw Chapel, with the Rev. W.E. Smith and the Rev. Baris Lanier officiating. 
   Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park. 
   Casketbearers will be Carl Hardison, Christopher Wells, Robert Wells, Amery Wells, Merrel Wells and Larry Harrell. 
   The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw, and at other times will be at the home of Gene Austin and Kay Wells, Watha.

   MARIE IVATINE FIELDS GENTRY 
   BOILING SPRING LAKES - Mrs. Marie Ivatine Fields Gentry, age 74, of 488 Alton Lennon Dr., Boiling Spring Lakes, died Monday, July 31, 2000 at Coastal Rehabilitation Center. 
   Mrs. Gentry was born December 29, 1925 in Columbus County and was the daughter of the late Gurley and Velma Stevens Fields. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes. She was a dedicated and loving mother and wife. 
   She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Gentry, U.S.N. Retired; a son, Mickey Gentry of Wilmington; three daughters, Cindy Gentry Phillips of Swansboro, Lynn Gentry Bowling of Bolivia and Jenny Gentry Eversole of Boiling Spring Lakes; seven grand|children and one great-grandchild, each of whom held a special place in her heart. 
   Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 3, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Supply Chapel, with Reverend Robert McClain officiating. 
   Burial will follow in the Bowling Cemetery. 
   The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening at the funeral home.

   WILLIAM ROBERT TURNER JR. 
   William Robert Turner Jr. of Wilmington, NC died Monday, July 31, 2000 at Cape Fear Hospital. 
   He was born in Henderson, NC on October 11, 1920, the son of the late William Robert and Irene Wiggins Turner Sr. 
   Mr. Turner was a member of the United Methodist Church of Garner, NC. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation as an engineer. 
   Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Brinkley Turner of the home; two children, William Robert Turner III of Topsail Beach, NC, and Roy Brinkley Turner and wife, Angela of Wilmington, NC; three grand|child|ren, Kim Turner of Wilmington, Susan Turner of Telluride, CO, and Zachary Turner also of Wilmington. 
   Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2000 at Sea Lawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Gary Waller. 
   In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 725 Wellington Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28401.
