LT. COL. JOSEPH STANLEY BEDFORD
Joseph Stanley Bedford, age 95, Lt. Colonel, United States
Army, Retired, died Saturday, July 15, 2000.
Col. Bedford was born in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey,
September 20, 1904, the son of the late Oscar Denmen Bedford and Edith
Robare Crowell, and was preceded in death by his wife, Francys Hooper Bedford.
He attended school in Hasbrouck Heights, New York University
and Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York City. He worked for
a short time on Wall Street and then was employed by the New Jersey State
Highway Department. Later he was employed for fifteen years by the New
York Central Railroad engineering department and later as assistant clearance
engineer. During that period he was one of three engineers who supervised
the loading and shipment of the 200-inch telescope lens from Corning, New
York, to Mount Palomar, California.
During his Army career, he served as Company Commander,
Regimental Adjutant and Battalion Executive Officer of the 16th Infantry,
First Infantry Division. He was Executive Officer of an Amphibious Regiment
on Washburn Island, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, instructing in landing operations
for the D-day assault over the English Channel. During W.W.11, he served
as Headquarters Commandant, 8th Army and Commander of Special Troops 8th
Army in Yokohama, Japan. He retired June 30, 1962 with thirty years of
service and was a longtime resident of Mares Pond Drive, Falmouth, MA.
Col. Bedford was a Life Member of The Retired Officers
Association. Life Member of Marine Lodge AF&AM, Falmouth, MA, Tokyo
Consistory of Scottish Rite, Wilmington Consistory of Scottish Rite and
Orient Lodge AF&AM. He was. also a communicant of Windermere Presbyterian
Church, Wilmington.
Col. Bedford is survived by a daughter, Thaise Honaker
and her husband Gerald of Wilmington, NC; a grandson, Geoffrey Honaker
and his wife Deborah of Wilmington, NC; a granddaughter, Leslie Honaker
Bolsover and her husband Stephen of Harrow, England; two great-granddaughters,
Gillian Bolsover of Harrow, England, and Hope Honaker of Wilmington, NC;
and one great-grandson, Alex Bolsover of Harrow, England.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday,
August 7, 2000 in Wilmington National Cemetery by Rev. Stephen Sloop.

ARCHIE JOSEPH McGIRT SR.
Archie Joseph McGirt Sr., 88, of 5052 Carolina Beach Road,
Wilmington, N.C., died at home Friday, July 21, 2000, after a courageous
battle with cancer.
Mr. McGirt was born September 20, 1911 in Red Springs,
N.C. and spent his childhood in Fairmont, N.C. He was the son of the late
Alton Meekins & Effie Brown McGirt.
Mr. McGirt is survived by his loving wife of 53 years,
Mildred (Millie) Ramsey McGirt; two sons, Archie Joseph McGirt Jr. &
wife Jan Batten, and Charles Wayne McGirt; and one daughter, Gail Lee McGirt,
all of Wilmington, N,C. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kelly,
Trey, Jaimie, Katherine, Cyan & Jesse McGirt, Sally and Andrew Jones;
two sisters Mildred Dudgeon and Elizabeth Davis of Cape Coral, Fl.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McGirt was preceded in
death by four brothers, Percy, Edison, Howard and Tharon McGirt; two sisters,
Irene King and Lizzie Mae Parker.
Mr. McGirt was a disabled veteran, having served in the
U.S. Marines 1927-1929. He later served in the Merchant Marines, traveling
to many foreign countries. He made his home in Wilmington, N.C., for the
past 65 years. He was a machinist by trade and worked for Block Industries
for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1976. He was a member of Sunset
Park United Methodist Church where be served as scout master for 8 years.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, celebrating
his life with the joy of giving to his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 24, 2000 at
2:00 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary, Market Street Chapel with Rev. Bob Bauman
and Rev. Ray Warren officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 23, 2000
from 7-9 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary Market Street and other times at the
home.

Lillian Riley Wassen of Wilmington died Friday, July 21,
2000 at her residence.
She was born April 6, 1934 in Wilmington, NC, daughter
of the late Elec and Queenie Kennedy Riley.
Mrs. Wassen was a dedicated member of the Ladies Home
League at the Salvation Army.
Surviving are her four grand|children; one sister, Nellie
Mae Smith of Nikina, NC; two brothers, George A. Riley Sr. and Will Garris
of Wilmington, NC; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend,
Mary Jackson of Wilmington, NC.

Espy Sullivan, Jr. of Hampstead, NC, died Thursday, July
20, 2000 at his residence.
He was born November 15, 1929 in Mt. Olive, NC, son of
the late Espy Sullivan, Sr. and Helen Jernigan Sullivan of Surf City, NC.
Mr. Sullivan was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired
as an executive with Export Leaf Tobacco Company in Richmond, VA, where
he worked for over thirty years.
Surviving are his daughter, Kathy S. Howell and husband
Kenneth of Lexington, KY; two grandchildren, Ashley and Nicholas; one sister,
Nedje Brock of Mt. Olive, NC; and several nieces and nephews in N.C. and
Ohio.

Mary Anderson Scott of Wilmington, NC, died Saturday,
July 22, 2000 at Davis Health Care Center.
She was. born October 4. 1912 in Somerville, NJ, daughter
of the late David John and Mary Jane Van De Vere Anderson Scott, and was
preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene Scott, formerly of Wilmington.
Mrs. Scott graduated from Hartdige and the Boston School
of the Arts. She was a member of Bethany Bible Chapel in Toms River, NJ.
Surviving are her two daughters, Ellan R, Hibbard of Wilmington,
NC and Mary Ann Scott of Wakefield, RI; grandsons, Richard Peterson of
Bardton, FL, Bart Peterson of Metchen, NJ, Scott Peterson of South Plainfield,
NJ, Arron Ketner, Justin Ketner, both of Wakefield, RI, and Eric Ford of
Chicago, IL; and great-grandchildren, Larissa Ann Peterson of South Plainfield,

in death by his brother, Bonnie Todd.
He is survived by his wife of forty five years, Kay Allen
