Mrs. Virginia S. Britt 

EVERGREEN -- Mrs. Virginia Stephens Britt, 62, of 8383 Old Lumberton Road died Tuesday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lennon’s Cross Roads Baptist Church by the Revs. Bennie Pledger and D.T. Griffin. Burial will be in Columbus Memorial Park in Whiteville.

Mrs. Britt is survived by a daughter, Jean Britt of Evergreen; a son, Billy M. Britt of Evergreen; her mother, Grace T. Stephens of Lumberton; two brothers, Jerry Stephens and Danny Stephens, both of Lumberton; four sisters, Rosa Kirby of Richmond, Va., Peggy Little of West Columbia, Texas, Betty Willoughby of Fayetteville and Beth Hunter of Garner; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

J. Melvin Sellers 

LAURINBURG -- J. Melvin Sellers, 70, of 12200 Evergreen Lane died Monday in Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

He was a former pitcher for the fast pitch mill league, a salesperson for Sears for over 30 years, past Master of Laurinburg Masonic Lodge #305 and a member of Central United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Quinton Covington. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

Mr. Sellers is survived by his wife, Helen B. Sellers, three sons, of Laurinburg,Ronnie Sellers of Gibson, and Bobby Clark and Mitchell Sellers, both of Laurinburg; a daughter, Kimberly S. Parker of Laurinburg; two brothers, Monroe Sellers of Marietta, Ohio, and Marvin Sellers of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Mrs. Cecilia B. Weaver 

LANDIS -- Mrs. Cecilia B. Weaver, 80, of Landis died Tuesday in Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Graham NaHouse. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove. Arrangements are being handled by Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home.

Among her survivors is a son, Terry E. Weaver of Southern Pines.

Clifford M. Matthews 

Clifford M. Matthews, 14, of 1121 Chestnut Wood Dr., Fayetteville, died Friday.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Main Post chapel at Fort Bragg by the Rev. Frederick Hendley. Burial will be in the Main Post Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Cunningham & Sons Mortuary.

Clifford is survied by his parents Michael and Carol Matthews of the home; a sister, Vanessa Grant of Norfork, Va.; his maternal grandparents, Harry and Cicely Freitas of Bronx, N.Y.; and his paternal grandmother, Meloney Matthews of Trinidad.

Walter C. Chappell 

FAIRMONT -- Walter Clifton Chappell, 74, of 2872 Centerville Church Road died Tuesday in his home.

He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and a retired manager of Swain’s Super Market.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Floyd Funeral Services chapel by the Revs. Ed Wilcox and Joe Bounds. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton.

Mr. Chappell is survived by his wife, Louise C. Chappell of the home; a daughter, Dale C. Floyd of the home; two sisters, Ruth Britt of Lumberton and Carol Davis of Statesville; and one grandchild.

Vincent J. Clayton 

SANFORD -- Vincent John Clayton, 82, of 7062 Oak Road died Monday in Central Carolina Hospital.

He was a retired Navy commander.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in St. Stephen Catholic Church by Father Al Jenemann. Arrangements are being handled by Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

Mr. Clayton is survived by his wife, Helen C. Clayton; a son, Vincent J. Clayton Jr., of Charlotte; two daughters, Joanne Novarro of Long Island, N.Y., and Mary Anderson of Enola, Pa.; two stepsons, Richard W. Clarke and Douglas A. Clarke, both of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a step-great-granddaughter.

FUQUAY-VARINA -- Aaron Clyde Morrison, infant son of Michael David and Rhonda Morrison died Sunday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in Ephesus Presbyterian Church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.

In addition to his parents, Aaron is survived by his paternal grandparents, Mark and Judy Perkins of Fuquay-Varina; his maternal grandparents, Bennie and Shirley Flowers of Coats; his paternal great-grandfather, Lexie Dean of Lillington; his maternal great-grandmother, Lura L. Flowers of Coats; and his paternal great-grandmother, Marion Miner of Fuquay-Varina.

STEDMAN -- Harvey Sherrill Strickland, 60, of Route 1, Box 142, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife, Wanda Strickland of the home; a daughter, Zanetta Tafili of Fayetteville; a son, Harvey S. Strickland of Fairfield, Ohio; two sisters, Shelby Hudson of Richmond, Va., and Sylvia Parker of Fayetteville; and six grandchildren.

AUTRYVILLE -- Hughes Hunter Hoffman, 70, of 183 Autry Mill Road died Monday in Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.

Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife, Virginia A. Hoffman of the home; and two sisters, Virginia Draughon and Edna Whorton, both of Oriental.

LUMBERTON -- Johnnie McGirt, 54, of Traveler Road died Saturday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Floyd Mortuary chapel by the Revs. Romey Revels, Sterling Chavis and Melvin Bell. Burial will be in Oxendine Cemetery in Saddletree.

Mr. McGirt is survived by his wife, Jane C. McGirt of the home; a daughter, Jackie M. Chavis of Lumberton; three sons, Bruce W. McGirt of the home, and Tony McGirt and Johnnie McGirt Jr., both of Lumberton; his parents, Joseph and Lilly M. McGirt of Lumberton; seven sisters, Debbie Thompson of Berewick, Maine, Dorain Locklear, Betty Ross, Dorothy Chance, Gertrude Allen and Edna McGirt, all of Lumberton, and Myrtle McGirt of Hope Mills; and nine grandchildren.

Maj. Andrew Scott Burris 

Burial for Maj. Andrew Scott Burris, who was killed June 13th in a training accident at Camp Blanding, Fla., will be Friday in Arlington National Cemetery.

Maj. Burris, 37, was the executive officer for 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment.

Maj. Burris, who had duty assignments in Germany and Korea, served in Operation Desert Storm and was among the first American troops to reach the Euphrates River.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Burris, and a daughter, Allison Burris.

Fletcher M. Canady 

WILMINGTON -- Fletcher Manson “Kaydo” Canady of Wilmington, formerly of Whiteville, died Monday.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in McKenzie Mortuary chapel in Whiteville by the Rev. James E. Taylor. Burial will be in Lake Waccamaw Cemetery.

Mr. Canady is survived by a daughter, Sue H. Hartloge of Savannah, Ga.; a son, Keith Wilson of Savannah; and two sisters, Virginia Keeter and Essie Keeter, both of Lake Waccamaw.

Mrs. Ruth C. Davis 

BOLTON -- Mrs. Ruth Conner Davis, 96, of Bolton died Tuesday in Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in McKenzie Mortuary chapel by the Rev. Larry Ward. Burial will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, Walter Davis of the home; two daughters, Allie M. Watts of Nakina and Mary L. Lanier of Clarkton; five sons, G.A. Redwine of Hallsboro, Arthur D. Redwine and of Whiteville,William C. Davis, both of Whiteville, Edward E. Davis of Shallotte and Hubert Davis of Bolton; 25 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruby C. Vause 

Mrs. Ruby Carter Vause, 82, of 311 Westview Drive, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

She was a member of Hay Street United Methodist Church and the Lizzie Lamb Sunday school class. She was a member and past president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hay Street United Methodist Church by Dr. Bruce Taylor. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Mrs. Vause is survived by a daughter, Brenda Vause of Fayetteville; a son, Robert C. Vause Jr. of Fayetteville; two sisters, Aleen C. Childres of Hope Mills and Pearl Graves of Burlington; a brother, Carlton Carter of San Antonio; and five grandchildren.

LUMBERTON -- William Lawson Brady Jr., 79, of Cricklewood Street died Monday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He was president of The Medicine Shoppe and Webster’s Pharmacy in Fairmont.

John T. Potter 

John Thomas Potter, 62, of 596 Pleasant Loop, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

He was a maintenance employee for Borden Chemical Co. Mr. Potter worked as a maitre d’ for Bo Brooks Restaurant in Baltimore or 25 years.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Calvary Assembly of God by the Rev. Tony Legear. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.

Mr. Potter is survived by his wife, Cathy W. Potter of the home; three sons, Johnny Potter and Glenn Potter, both of Baltimore, and Paul Kellam of the home; a stepson, Reginald Bradshaw of Onancock, Va.; his mother, Thelma Williamson of Hope Mills; three brothers, Fat Potter and Robert Potter, both of Holden Beach, and Jerry Potter of Lumberton; a sister, Larue Hackney of Hope Mills; and one granddaughter.

Michael Lamont Richardson, 37, of 307 Hawthorne Road, Fayetteville, died Saturday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Richardson is survived by three children, Lamarcus Richardson, Keyette Richardson and Michael C. Richardson all of Fayetteville.

Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Freddie H. Rush, 70, of 813 Varsity Drive, Fayetteville, died Monday in his home.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Wiseman Mortuary chapel by the Rev. W.T. Ford. Burial will be in the Main Post Cemetery at Fort Bragg with full military honors.

Mr. Rush is survived by his wife, Vertell Rush of the home; a daughter Rosalind Rush of Fayetteville; two sisters, Melba L. Lynch of Augusta, Ga., and Geneiva Gooding of Fayetteville; and three grandchildren.

LUMBERTON -- Mrs. Olivia Bryan Birchette, 93, of Lumberton, formerly of Newport News, Va., died Monday in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

HOPE MILLS -- Mrs. Ila Jane Reynolds, 88, of 516 Cameron Road died Monday in Happy Valley Retirement Center.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Reeves Funeral Home chapel by the Revs. James Scales and Fred J. Hall. Burial will be in Gilmont Cemetery.

Mrs. Reynolds is survived by three sons, Vernon L. Reynolds and William B. Reynolds, both of Hope Mills and Edward E. Reynolds of Goose Creek, S.C.; two sisters, Eva Tyndal and Myrtle Stamper, both of Dunn; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

WEST END -- Kenneth W. Rowland, 59, of 1038 Seven Lakes North died Monday in Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

He was an Army veteran and general manager for Days Inn of Southern Pines.

Mr. Rowland is survived by a daughter, Terry L. Curry of West End; a sister, Nancy Bartel of Fredricksburg, Va.; two brothers, Bill Rowland of Wartanburg, Tenn., and Bob Rowland of Chicago; and one granddaughter.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Patricia M. Wood; two sons, Stuart Wood III of Colorado Springs, Colo., and John Elliott Wood of Yorktown, Va.; two daughters, Meredith L. Wood of Colorado Springs and Peggy S. Olson of Denver; his mother, Mary Sutton Wood of Fayetteville; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
