SPRUCE PINE – Lee Woody Jr., 68, of Wallace Avenue, died Thursday June
13, 2002 in a Spruce Pine rest home. He was the son of the late Lee and
Myrtle Carpenter Woody Sr. He was also preceded in death by a daughter,
Beverly Gurley, and a son, Greg Woody. Survivors include his son, Rodney
woody of Spruce Pine; daughter, Diane Bennett of Bakersville; sister Joyce
Greene of Valdese; brother, Jolly Woody of Clairmont; six grandchilden
and one great grandchild. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sullins

BURLINGTON – Ruth Young James, 83, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in her
home. She was the daughter of the late John Samuel and Bettie Green Young.
She was the husband of the late James William “Bill” James Jr. She was
preceded Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Betty James Slowinski and
husband James of Goldsboro; sisters, Lucy Willis of Burlington, Sudie Hudson
of Connelly Springs, Carolyn Snyder of Spruce Pine; brother John Young
of Hickory; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren and two special
caregivers. Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Hocutt Memorial Baptist
Church. Rev. Jimmy Nicleston will officiate. Burial will be in Alamance

WELDON B. LEWIS
LITTLE SWITZERLAND – Weldon B. Lewis, 77, of Little Switzerland and
Fort Pierce, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002. He was an Associate member of
Spruce Pine United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Jane Lewis;
three sons, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren and his sister-in-law.
He was a decorated vetran of WWII, having been awarded the Purple Heart
follwoing action in Germany. He was a Mason and Shriner, and a graduate
of The University of Miami in Civil Engineering. He retired as County Administrator
in Flordia, having held that positionfor twenty-one years. Srevices were
held, June 16, at the first United Methodist Church, Fort Pierce.
BILLIE JUNE GARLAND MCKINNEY
BAKERSVILLE – Billie June Garland McKinney, 73, of Cane Creek Rd.,
died Monday June 10, 2002 at Lake James Lodge in Marion. She was the daughter
of the late Fred and Edith Ollis Garland and the wife of Jake McKinney.
She was prededed in death by a daughter, Janice Buchanan. Survivors include
husband, Jake McKinney; daughter, Deborah Ayres Hughes; sister, Patsy Vaughn;
four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday
June 12, at Henline-ughed Chapel. Revs. Buster Yelton and Don Stafford
officiated. Burial was in the Bakersville Memorial Cemetery. The family

CHARLES EDWARD STEVENSON
SPRUCE PINE – Charles Edward Stevenson, 79, of Tom Bell Rd., died Monday
June 10, 2002 in a Spruce Pine Hospital. He was the son of the late Joe
and Electa Burleson Stevenson and husband of Ina Washburn, who died in
1997. Mr. Stevenson was also preceded in death by a sister, Daisy Ward,
and a brother, Lloyd Stevenson. He was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist
Church. Survivors include his daughter, Linda Stevenson of Spruce Pine;
son, Gary Stevenson of Spruce Pine; sisters, Ann Brewer of Marion, Myrtle
McCourry of Newland; Pearl Dilly ans Helen Hahsen, both of California;
brothers, Ted Stevenson of Bakersville, Bob Stevenson and Leonard Sevenson
both of Marion; several neices and nephews. Services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday
at Grassy Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Matt Mills will officiate. Burial
will be in the Grassy Creek Memorial Gardens on Wednesday. The family will

SPRUCE PINE – Mary Rhyne Woody, 68, widow of Russell woody, died Monday
June 10, 2002 in a Yancey Couny rest home. Russell preceded her in death
in 1991. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Spruce Pine, where she
worked in the nursery for many years. She also was a caregiver to about
100 children over the years. Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Vance
and husband Bobby of Harrisburg; brother, Lee Rhyne of Johnson City; sister,
Stella Buchanan of Plumtree; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Rev. David Vess

CRABTREE – James Edward Nanney, 80, died Friday, June 14, 2002 at Asheville
VA Medical Hospital. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late
Matt and Mae Nanney. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.
He was also preceded in death by two infant sons, Paul and Terry Nanney;
a sister and two brothers. Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Marie Davis
Nanney; ten children, Ray Nanney of Troy, Ralph Nanney of Hickory, Opal
Ballew, Darrell Nanney and Terrell Nanney, all of Burnsville, Harold Nanney,
Ferrell Nanney, Dana Miller and Marolynn Nanney all of Spruce Pine; four
sisters, Louise Cox, Juanita Buchanan and Linda Nanney all of Spruce Pine
and Willie Fisher of Marion; a brother, Charles Nanney of Spruce Pine;
eighteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Estatoe Church of God, of which he
is a member. Revs. Phillip Garland and Scott Jenkins will officiate. Burial
will be in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with military grave
rites conducted by Sgt. E.L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV. The family will
recieve friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers
Funeral Home where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie
in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
GRACE DAVENPORT ROBINSON
SPRUCE PINE – Grace Davenport Robinson, 89, passed away on June 14,
2002 at Brian Center Nursing Facility after a long illness. She was receded
in death by her husband of 49 years, Ken Robinson, who passed away n 1983;
her parents, Robert Massey and Maggie Jane McKinney Davenport; three brothers,
Lee Davenport of Newdale and Clay and Scott Davenport of Spruce Pine. She
is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Virginia Robinson
of Spruce Pine; grandson, Adam Stewart and wife Anaweg; great granddaughter,
Alexis; step great grandson, Dylan and several nieces and nephews. She
was a member of Spruce Pine United Methodist Church, Beaver Creek Homemakers
and the Order of the Eastern Star Spruce Pine Chapter 27 since 1954. She
and her husband were founders and operators of the former Robinson Chevrolet
and Oldsmobile of Spruce Pine, where she retired in 1955 as bookkeeper,
Robinson’s Bed and Breakfast of Ft. Myers, FL, where they lived for 27
years, and also a former Safari Campground of Spruce Pine. The family will
recieve friends at Webb Funeral Home from 6-7 p.m. on Saturday, June 15,
with the funeral immediately following. There will be no graveside services.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made
to Hospice of Mitchell or Yancey County.

BAKERSVILLE – Gladys Brewer Masters, 96, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002
in Asbury Center, Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Roby and
Hannah Sheppard Brewer. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles
Burnie Masters; sons, Jack ans Lloyd Masters; daughter, Mary Lou Bartley;
sisters, Hazel B. Conley and Haskel B. Johnson; brothers, Wesley, Ralph,
Elbert, Howard and Clinton Brewer; and one grandson. Survivors include
daughters and son-in-laws Nancy Lee and Lynn Taylor of Johnson City, Billie
Jo and Ernie Cross of Johnson City, Shelia and Bob Billis of Baskersville;
son, Charles B. Masters Jr, and wife Teresa of Macon; son-in law, JD Bartley
of Mt. Airy; brother-in-law, Fred Masters and wife Bertie of Baskersville

PORT ORANGE FL – Jay R. Street, 73, died June 13 2002 at his home.
He was the son of the late Garrett and Marie Moffit Street. He was also
preceded in death by his wife Alverta Street.
Survivors include his daughter, Betty Louise Blauvelt of Westminster,
MD; and his brother Basil J Street of Hanover, PA.
A joint funeral service for Mr. Street and his brother Luther was held
Sunday at 3 p.m. in Spring Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Bob McCurry will
officiate. The families will receive friends one hour prior to the service
at the church. Burial will follow in Butler Cemetery in Buladean.
LUTHER ELMER STREET
BAKERSVILLE – Luther Elmer Street, 85, of Spring Creek Rd., died June
14, 2002 at his home. He was the son of the late Garrett and Marie Moffit
Street. He was also preceded in death by a son, Luther Street Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Alexander Street; three daughters,
Mamie Marie Boings of Burnsville, Anna Mae McCourry of Bakersville, and
Rebekah Lynn Thayer of Newdale; two sons, Basil James Street and Robert
Lee Street, both of Bakersville; one brother, Basil Street of Hanover,
PA; and six grandchildren.
A joint funeral service for Mr. Street and his brother Jay was held
Sunday at 3 p.m. in Spring Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Bob McCurry will

RAY HALL
SPRUCE PINE – Ray Hall, 84, of Stokes Calloway Lane, died June 17,
2002 at his home. He was the son of the late Fritz and Grace Ollis Hall.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence G. Hall, and a sister,
Irene Ellis. A member of Lily Branch Baptist Church, he was a retired heavy
equipment operator in the coal mining industry and a member of the United
Mine Workers of America.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen M. Hall of Spruce Pine; daughters,
Marie Buchanan of Knoxville, and Evelyn Cook and Kay Oglesby, both of Spruce
Pine; step daughters, Carolyn Wise of Newland and Marilyn Sparks of Bakersville;
step sons, Rick Morris of Elk Park, and Charles Morris of Bakersville;
sister, Betty Broadway of Spruce Pine; brother, Robert Hall of Charlotte;
seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and six step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Grindstaff Memorial
Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Gary Baker and Donald
Davis officiated. Entombment was in the Spruce Pine Mausoleum, at 11 a.m.

SENA BARNETT HUGHES
BAKERSVILLE – Sena Barnett Hughes, 90, died June 16, 2002 in Memorial
Mission Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Soloman and Victoria
Griffith Barnett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James
Gartha Hughes; sons, Loy and Lonnie Hughes; sisters, Lassie Peterson and
Pansy Hughes; and brothers, Garther, Ray and Calvin Barnett.
Survivors include her daughters, Olene Hutchins of Lenior, and Elene
Bryant of Green Mountain; sons, Lee Hughes of West Grove, PA, and L.C.
Hughes of Kennet Square, PA; sisters, Nell Branch of Spruce Pine, and Ann
Gouge and Mae Hughes both of Green Mountain; brother, Iss Barnett of Erwin;
nine grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.

EDNA WHITSON BYRD
BAKERSVILLE – Edna Whitson Byrd, 70, died in Johnson City Medical Center
on Saturday, June 15, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Clayton and
Dollie Peterson Whitson. She was also preceded in death by her husband,
James Ross Byrd.
Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Wilson of Burnsville; sister,
Thelma Street of Bakersville; brothers, Lee Whitson of Marion and Lloyd
Whitson of Charlotte; and three grandchildren.

BAKERSVILLE – Alma Briggs Griffith, 89, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002
in Greenville, TN. She was the daughter of the late Lewis and Fuchsia English
Briggs. She was a member of Tipton Hill Methodist Church and a retired
teacher from Yancey and Mitchell County Schools. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Park H. Griffith.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Griffith Mitchell of Greenville
TN; two grandsons; and three great grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Henline-Hughes

GUY MCDONALD PHILLIPS
WINSTON-SALEM – Dr. Guy McDonald Phillips, 73, died Tuesday, June 18,
2002 at his home. Born in Bakersville, he was the son of the late Everett
Leon and Edna Greene Phillips. He was a graduate of the University of North
Carolina School of Dentistry and a member of the Dental Honor Society.
He was a Captain in the US Army. He opened a dental practice in Winston-Salem
in 1958 and continued until his retirement. He was preceded in death by
his wife, Mildred Ramsey Phillips; and a brother, Lawrence Phillips.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Eskridge; sons, Monte Phillips
and Mark Phillips; brothers, Dr. Kenneth R. Phillips, and Bruce L. Phillips;
sisters, Louise Galgou and Mary Hutchins; six grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
A private service will be held at the family cemetery. Memorials may

KATHLEEN BURLESON
NEWLAND – Kathleen Burleson, 86, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 in a Linville
hospital. She was the daughter of the late Ben and Edna Norman Wiseman,
and wife of the late Grover Burleson. She was a member of Pine Grove United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter Peggy Duncan of Waynesville; a sister,
Juanita Smith of Elizabethton TN; one grandson; and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Grindstaff Memorial
Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. R.M. Cassity officiated.
Burial was in Green Valley Cemetery. The family received friends from 3
p.m. until the service hour Thursday at the funeral home.
LORA ALLEN
BURNSVILLE – Lora Allen, 92, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 in a Burnsville
rest home. She was the daughter of the late Rich and Liz Wilson, and wife
of the late Krib Allen. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Emma
Lou Allen, and two sons, Floyd and Lee Allen. She was a member of Blue
Rock Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Murphy and Elizabeth Blevins,
both of Burnsville; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 12 great
great grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday at Blue Rock Baptist Church.
Revs. Dennis Autrey and Ronnie Gougel officiated. Burial was in the church

DAVID BROWN BUCHANAN
NEWTON – David “Brown” Buchanan, 76, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at
his home. A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of the late William
David and Minnie Chandler Buchanan. He was owner/operator of Buchanan’s
Grocery in Newton, and a member of Startown First Baptist, were he served
as deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was preceded in death by two daughters,
Dee-Dee McGee and Anita Buchanan.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Howell Buchanan; three daughters,
Jeanette “Flossie” Richardson of Granite Falls, Frances Robinson of Newton,
and Mary-Lou Houser of Thomasville; two sons, Dale Buchanan of Newton,
and Steve Buchanan of Hickory; a sister, Annie-Maw McKinney of Bakersville;
two brothers, Glenn and Ray Buchanan, both of Bakersville; 10 grandchildren;
and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Startown First Baptist
Church. Rev. Dean Hart officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The
family received friends on Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Willia-Reynolds Funeral
Home in Newton.
MARSHALL AYERS
BAKERSVILLE – Marshall Ayers, 88, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, in Tuckasegee,
NC. He was the son of the late Alfonzer and Lucy Byrd Ayers. He was a member
of Roan Valley Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife Mattie Ellis Ayers of Tuckasegee; a daughter,
Joan Beutell of Tuckasgee; a son Wayne Ayers of Johnston City, TN; four
grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

SPRUCE PINE – Delmar Howard Goins, 66, of Roan Road, died Wednesday
June 19, 2002 at his home. He was the son of the late Vol and Annie Goins.
He was retired as a N.C. Drivers License Examiner after 30 years of service.
Survivors include his wife Kay Overcash Goins; a son, Gene Goins of
Kannapolis; a daughter, Ginger Lynch of Asheville; brothers, Conrad, Gene
and Winifred Goins, all of Kannapolis; sisters, Sarah Hamn, Willette Wilkerson,
Della Morton and Ruth McCall, all of Kannapolis; two grandchildren and

JAMES MACK NEWTON
MARION – James Mack Newton, 57, died Wednesday June 19, 2002 in an
Asheville health care facility. He was the son of the late Elbert and Hattie
English Newton. He had served with the NC Highway Patrol from 1968-1983.
Survivors include his sons, Brad and David Newton, both of Marion;
a sister Juanita Newton of Marion; a brother, Jerry Newton of Burnsville
and two grandchildren.
Graveside serivces were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lily Branch Baptist
