BAKERSVILLE – Myrtle Johnson Boone, 83, of the Rebels Creek community, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Bessie Johnson, and wife of the late Jeter Boone. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, N.E. Johnson and Elmer Johnson. She was a member of Minneapolis Church of Christ.
Survivors include a daughter, Lana Costner of Crossnore; sons, Larry Boone of Burnsville, and Jerry Boone of Sylva; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Wallace Wise and Joi Williams officiated. Burial was in Rebels Creek Cemetery. BEULAH CAMPBELL BARNETT
BAKERSVILLE – Beulah Campbell Barnett, 70, of Campbell Cemetery Road, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 at her home. She was the daughter of the late George and Jane Oaks Campbell, and wife of the late Dewey Barnett. A seamstress by trade, she was employed by Bassett-Walker, and was a member of Roans Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Hoilman of Bakersville; sisters, Goldie Campbell of Johnson City,TN, and Bertie Ledford and Mildred Sheets, both of Bakersville; brothers, Warren and T.M. Campbell, both of Bakersville; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Roans Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Revs. J.C. Sheets and Lester Perkins officiated. Burial was in Campbell Cemetery. BAKERSVILLE – Eugene Gerard Blair, 46, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 at his home. He was the son of the late Julius and Leona Tobias Blair. A native of New York, he was a contractor by trade.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth A.Blair, of the home; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Kilgore; a stepson, Keed Kilgore; sisters, Judith Hammond, Marianne Jones, and Theresa Bailey; and brothers, Joseph, James and Gerard Blair.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Church of the Brethren. Rev. Frank Herbert officiated. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville was in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS “TOM” DUVALL
BAKERSVILLE – Thomas “Tom” Duvall, of Fred Sparks Road, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at his residence. He was the son of the late Willard and Minnie Buchanan Duvall, and husband of the late Nola McKinney Duvall. He was a self-employed truck driver.
Survivors include two sisters, Dollie Hoilman of Spruce Pine, and Christine Honeycutt of Bakersville; one brother, Noah Duvall of Bakersville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville. Revs. Ronnie Gouge, Larry Greene and Jack Michales officiated. Burial was in Green-Young Cemetery. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.

ERNEST DAVID BUCHANAN
BAKERSVILLE – Ernest David Buchanan, 80, of Stewart Road, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital. He was the son of the late Clifton and Mae Early Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lela Buchanan andd Kathleen Pitman; and a brother, Cecil Buchanan. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Bear Creek Baptist Church. He was also a member of Vesper Lodge 554 AF&AM, and retired owner of Sky C Auto Sales.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hollifield Buchanan of the home; daughters, Brenda McClellan, Shirley Smith and Nancy Smith, all of Spruce Pine, and Jo Ellen Brewer of Lenoir; a son, David Buchanan of Spruce Pine; sisters, Margaret Masters of Bakersville, Ida Schultz of Lenoir, and Veda Buchanan of Hickory; a brother, Chester Buchanan of Taylorsville; 13 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren.

JOHN J. MILLER JR.
SPRUCE PINE – John J. Miller Jr., 69, of the Swiss Pine Lake community, died Wednesday, jan. 22. 2003 at his home. He was the son of the late John Miller Sr. and Julia Ray Miller-Gardin, and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. He retired from the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant with 22 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Jackson Miller; a daughter, Gwen Conley of Marion; sons, Anthony Miller of Marion, and John Miller III of Asheville; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SPRUCE PINE – Faye Buchanan Snyder, 59, of Jack Sullins Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Louella Hollar Robinson. A member of Pine Branch Baptist Church, she was employed by Yancey Nursing Center.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Snyder; a daughter, Stacy Howell of Hickory; a son, Darren Buchanan of Spruce Pine; step daughters, Kathy Hall and Penny Winchester, both of Spruce Pine; and Janet Buchanan of Bakersville; stepsons, Phil and Charlie Snyder, both of Spruce Pine; a sister, Sandy Woody of Spruce Pine; brothers, Doug Robinson of Hickory, Bill Robinson of Lenoir, Gary and Johnny Robinson, both of Lexington, and Fred Robinson of Marion; three grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren.

MAXENE WARRICK BARKSDALE
JOHNSON CITY, TN – Maxene Warrick Barksdale, 73, formerly of Mitchell County, died Wednesday, Jan. 22. 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Boyd and Hettie Renfro Warrick. She was a homemaker and member of Eden United Methodist Church in Jonesboro, TN.
Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Barksdale Jr. of the home; a daugher, Rebecca Crockett of Johnson City; and one grandson.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City. Rev. Clyde Hester officiated. A private entombment was held later at Roselawn Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the home of her daughter in Johnson City.

GEORGE THOMAS
SPRUCE PINE – George Thomas, 80, of Beams Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at Mission St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville. He was the son of the late Jonah and Martha Howell Thomas. He was self-employed in the landscaping business, and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Butler Thomas of the home; stepdaughters, Sally Sparks and Pauline Parker, both of Johnson City, TN, and Juanita Thomas of Morganton; stepsons, Samuel Carver of Swannanoa, Gene Howell of Roan Mountain, TN, Brown Howell of Pineola, and Max Howell of Charlotte; and a sister, Lillie Moore of Bakersville.

SPRUCE PINE – Frank Sparks, 77, of Minpro Road, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 at his home. He was the son of the late Ace and Dollie English Sparks. A member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, he was a security guard for Henredon Furniture.
Survivors include his wife, Jenella Henson Sparks of the home; daughters, Sondra Washburn of Spruce Pine, and Judy Sparks of Marion; sons, Larry Sparks and Ronnie Presnell, both of Spruce Pine, and Benny Sparks of Marion; sisters, Ruth Duncan and Edith Buchanan, both of Bakersville; a brother, Buster Sparks of Bakersville; 10 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

RAY PITMAN
SPRUCE PINE – Ray Pitman, 77, of Beaver Creek Road, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 in an Avery County hospital. He was the son of the late Waits and Minnie Pendley Pitman. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Jack Pitman; and two sisters, Louise Pendley and Elma Pitman. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and the Spruce Pine Moose Lodge.
Survivors include one son, Douglas Pitman of Spruce Pine; two sisters, Cathy Jones and Edna Burleson, both of Spruce Pine; one brother, Burl Pitman of Burnsville; and one grandchild.

GLADYS C. WISE
NEWLAND – Gladys C. Wise, 83, of Henson Creek, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at her residence. She was the daugher of the late Jess and Ida McKinney Childers. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Vaughn and Ruth Cook; and a brother, Frank Childers. She was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Aaron Wise of the home; daughters, Ann Pittman of Newland, and Rachel Biddix of Spruce Pine; sons, Donald and Ronald Wise, both of Newland; sister, Hassie Tollie of Spruce Pine; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

SPRUCE PINE – Lillian Emily “Sis” Grindstaff, 64, of Ellis Road,, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Boss and Willie Mae Vaughn Ollis. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ray and Roy Ollis. She was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church and retired from Hardee’s.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Grindstaff; sons, Mike Woody of Spruce Pine, and Houston and David Woody, both of Marion; a stepdaughter, Deanna Grindstaff of Spruce Pine; a stepson, Jerry Grindstaff of Marion; sisters, Katherine Buchanan and Louise Buchanan, both of Spruce Pine; brothers, Guy and Pete Ollis, both of Spruce Pine; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

GEORGE PARSONS
MAGNOLIA – George Parsons, 83, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 in Aultman Hospital. He was the son of the late John and Viola Greene Parsons. He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Retired from Diebold after 44 years, he was a member of Indian Run Christian Church, where he served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, choir member and founder of the junior church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Elnore Meiser Parsons, of the home; two daughters, Ruth Grant of Columbus, and Faye Coles of Canton South; two sons, Dennis Parsons of Magnolia, and Dean Parsons of Wake Forest; one brother, Robert Parsons of Glen Ellyn, IL; two sisters, Mae Slagle of Bakersville, and Kate Gage of Johnson City, TN; 11 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

WAYNE D. CRAWFORD SR.
CHESTER, SC – Wayne Douglas Crawford Sr., 59, formerly of Bakersville, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002. A retired millwright, he was a member of Dupont Masonic Lodge 289 AF & AM.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanie W. Crawford of the home; a son, Wayne D. Crawford Jr. of Chester; a daughter, Lori Edwards of Chester; his mother, Myrtle Ingram of Bakersville; and one brother, Ralph Edward Crawford of Bakersville.

RETTA MAE WILLIS
BAKERSVILLE – Retta “Rettie” Mae Willis, 86, formerly of the Snow Hill community, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003 at Spruce Pine Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur Willis. A homemaker and lifelong member of Snow Hill Baptist Church, she lived here until moving to Hunters Run Apartments in Burnsville 14 years ago. For the past year, she was a resident of the Brian Center in Spruce Pine.
Survivors include her daughter, Willa Mae Presnell of Burnsville; a son, Harold Dean Willis of Bakersville; five grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

MAUDE MILLER COMBS
BAKERSVILLE – Maude Miller Combs, 86, of Trout Pond Lane, died Monday, Jan. 6 at St. Lucie Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Jess and Stella Francum Miller, and wife of the late Marvin Combs. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betty O’Brien; and a brother, Ray Miller. She and her husband were in the home construction business in Miami, FL before retiring.
Survivors include three daughter, Joyce Schaffer of Tampa, FL, Judy Hengold of Port Lucie, FL, and Ruby Brown of Nashville, TN; four sisters, Hedy Perkins of Kannapolis, Arlene Russell of Sun City, AZ, Laura Haines of Bakersville, and Ruth Morris of Manasses, VA; one brother, J.B. Miller of Burnsville; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

DONALD A. “PECK” DAVIS
SYKESVILLE, MD – Donald Alton “Peck” Davis, 63, formerly of the Buladean community, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002 at the home of his brother. He was the son of Virginia Davis Nickoles of Eldersburg, and the late Truman Jackson. He was also preceded in death by a son, and two brothers. A long-time carpenter, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Davis of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Snyder; a son, Ronnie Snyder; three brothers, four sisters, and three grandchildren.

GLENN FRANKLIN PHILLIPS
BAKERSVILLE – Glenn Franklin Phillips, 72, of Hobson Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 at his residence. He was the son of the late James Oscar and Nora Stewart Phillips. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Phillips Benfield, and one brother, Eugene Phillips. He was retired from Henredon Furniture.
Survivors include his wife, June Ledford Phillips of the home; one daughter, Vickie Sweeney of Hickory; four sons, David, Marvin and Scotty Phillips, all of Bakersville, and Ronald Phillips of Marion; five sisters, Dorothy Hoilman, Ruth Hoilman, Catherine Phillips, Edna Street and Sue Garland, all of Bakersville; two brothers, Leonard and Arnold Phillips of Bakersville; and nine grandchildren.

JOHN EWING TIPTON
SPRUCE PINE – John Ewing Tipton, 77, of North Mountain Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at his residence. He was the son of the late Merritt and Lillian Huskins Tipton, and the adopted son of Spurgeon and Estie Woody Buchanan. A member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, he was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, and received the Purple Heart. He was instrumental in starting the Estatoe Volunteer Fire Department and received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award in 1989. He also did volunteer work at Spruce Pine Community Hospital and was a member of Bakersville Lodge #357 Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Gurley Tipton of the home; one daughter, Selita Tipton of Spruce Pine; sisters, Maxie Burgin, Evelyn Hensley, Ruby McKinney, Lorene Harris and Inez Honeycutt, all of Burnsville, and Lona Boston and Barbara Geouge of Spruce Pine; brothers, Jim Buchanan of Spruce Pine, and Bill Tipton of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Ward Buchanan of the home; two sons, Arthur Avery Buchanan of Bakersville, and Ivan Berry of Burnsville; one daughter, Cynthia Deyton of Green Mountain; one sister, Irene Garland of Bakersville; and one grandson.

SPRUCE PINE – Talmadge Johnson Davis, 79, of Walnut Avenue, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2003 in an Asheville hospital. He was the son of Edmond H. and Hattie Ellen Gurley Davis. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Jewel Jones Davis. An active member of First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, he was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired auto parts sales manager.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Thomas Davis of the home; a son, Frank T. Davis of Spruce Pine; sisters, Mildred Hogan of Surfside Beach, SC, and Doris Loudermilk of Hudson; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

BAKERSVILLE — Jay Frye, 78, of the Bear Creek community, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital. He was the son of the late Rev. Renzo and Arizona Forbes Frye. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, the late Lula Greene Frye; a son, Roger Jay Frye; brothers, Robert, Frank and Clyde Frye; and a sister, Jeanette King. He was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Belle Buchanan Frye; a daughter, Shelby McClure of Marion; sons, Bill and Doug Frye, both of Bakersville; a stepson, Wayne Ward of Spruce Pine; sisters, Inez nanney andLena Davis, both of Marion; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

BAKERSVILLE – Bernice Burleson Wilson, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at her residence. She was the wife of the late John E. Wilson. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy and Oscar Burleson. She was a homemaker and member of Roan Mountain Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Lou Ellen Jones of Candler, and Linda Clontz of Marion; one son, Terry Van Wilson of Bakersville; one sister, Georgia Phillips of Forest City; one brother, Fred O. Burleson of Spruce Pine; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

MARY SPARKS
BAKERSVILLE – Mary Sparks, 76, of Pitman Road, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in an Asheville hospital. She was the daughter of the late Greene and Maggie Davis Pittman. She was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ceal Sparks; daughters, Bobbie Young of Marion, and Kay Young of Spruce Pine; sisters, Harriett Biddix and Lucy Dellinger, both of Spruce Pine, and Lennie Mae Pittman of Bakersville; a brother, Bill Pitman of Bakersville; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bear Creek Baptist Church. Revs. Chris Rathbone and Vernon Buchanan officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine.

RUTH T. WOHLSCHEID
LAKELAND, FL – Ruth T. Wohlscheid, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at her home. She was a teacher in the Wake County School System and a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, the late Rev. William Heath, and her second husband, the late Louis M. Wohlscheid.
Survivors include her daughters, Billie Ruth Sparks of Spruce Pine, and Regina Tyndall of Charlotte; sons, William Heath of Lakeland, and John F. Heath of Issaquah, WA; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeside Baptist Church. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour at the church. Lakeland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

NORA ANN FREEMAN OGLE
BURNSVILLE – Nora Ann Freeman Ogle, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 in Cannon Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Hubert and Dorothy Freeman, and step-daugher of Edna Freeman of Burnsville. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tammy Renee Ogle; a son, Roger Ewrin Ogle; and a sister, Valda Freeman Crain.
In addition to her step-mother, she is survived by a daugher, Alma Scott of Burnsville; two sons, Eddie Lee Ogle of Marshall, and Tracy Dean Ogle of Bakersville; two sisters, Lisa and Kathy; three brothers, Darrell, Randall and Brian; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville. Revs. Charles Willis and Ralph Hedrick officiated. Burial was in Deyton-Laws Cemetery at Bailey Hill. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

AUDREY BOSTON
SPRUCE PINE – Audrey Boston, 70, of Boston Hill Road, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at her home. She was the daughter of the late W.C. and Bertie Pitman Shipman. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Boston; daughters, Amelia Weeks and Janet Brooks, both of Spruce Pine; a son, Greg Boston of Spruce Pine; sisters, Inez Cox of Vansant, VA, June Nichols of N. Palm Beach, FL, and Libby Pratt of Winter Haven, FL; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. David Johnson officiated. Burial was in Liberty Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour Sunday at the funeral home.

JACK ERNEST SPARKS
SPRUCE PINE – Jack Ernest Sparks, 39, of Jakes Branch Road, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at his home. He was the son of Guy and Edna Johnson Sparks of Bakersville. He was a heavy equipment operator with Feldspar Corporation, where he was a member of the United Mine Workers. He was also a member of Calvary Baptist Chruch.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Marsha Clark Sparks of Newland; one son, Cameron Sparks of Newland; two sisters, Emma Jean sparks of Spruce Pine and Pam Sparks of Spruce Pine; and two brothers, Marty Sparks of Spruce Pine, and Larry Sparks of Bakersville.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville. Revs. Don Stafford, Chris Davis and David Atkins officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Thursday in Bailey memorial Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour Wednesday at the funeral home.

LULA DELLINGER
NEWLAND – Lula Dellinger, 84, of the Henson Creek community, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003 at her home. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Estie Buchanan Ward, and wife of the late Paul Dellinger.
Survivors include a daughter, Lee Ella Burleson of Newland; sisters, Barbara Hylemon of Spruce Pine, Una Burleson of Marion, and Mae Phillips of Banner Elk; brothers, Linzie Ward of Bakersville, and Warfield Ward of Newland; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Earl Carver Jr. and Gerald Grindstaff officiated. Burial followed in Pitman Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeal home.

CHRISTINE B. BUCHANAN
WEAVERVILLE – Christine B. Buchanan, 62, formerly of Avery County, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003. She was the daughter of Pauline Franklin Buchanan of Weaverville, and the late Millard E. Buchanan, and wife of the late James Harold Buchanan. A seamstress and a caterer, she was a membre of Mt. Sheba Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her daughters, Tammy Tingle of Kingsport, TN, and Karen Taylor of Durham; a sister, Betty Fisher of Walhalla, SC; brothers, Jim Buchanan of Knoxville, TN, and Dr. John Buchanan of Lexington; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Sheba Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Shinehart officiated. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cane Creek Cemetery in Bakersville. The family received friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m.Tuesday at the church. West Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
