VERNA COOPER ROWLAND

BLANCH -- Verna Cooper Rowland, 78, of 609 Blanch Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at her residence.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Purley United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Floyd Morrow.
Born on Nov. 29, 1919, in Franklin County, Va., to the late Ord Cooper and the late Della Mae Rigney Cooper, Mrs. Rowland lived in Saga, Va. until moving to Caswell County, NC in 1935. She married Edward M. Rowland, Jr. on May 29, 1937, who died on Feb. 1, 1997. She retired from Cole Chevrolet-Olds in Yanceyville, in 1982, where she had worked as office manager for 20 years.
Mrs. Rowland was a member of the Purley United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, treasurer, a lay delegate to the Annual Methodist Conference and other Administrative offices. She was a member of the Caswell Chapter #239 of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Caswell County Extension Homemakers.
Survivors are son, Kenneth A. Rowland of Blanch; brothers, Garnett Cooper of Yanceyville; Samuel F. Cooper of Milton; sisters, Thalia Bradley of Orlando, Fla.; Jane Walker of Reidsville; grandson, Jon Stuart Rowland of Salt Lake City, Utah; step-grandchildren, Lane Bailey of Tryon; Chris Bailey of Dillsboro.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Cecil W. Cooper; Daniel O. Cooper; three sisters, Letha Cooper; Essie Belcher; and Thelma Foster.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall, and at other times, at the residence, 609 Blanch Road, Blanch, NC.

MEBANE -- Mr. Govenor Vance Moretz, Jr., 61, of 120 Gibson Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell in Burlington.
The memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham. Graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane.

WILSON ANDERSON MCBANE

Mr. Wilson Anderson McBane, 90, formerly of 723 S. Elam Ave. died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Friends Homes at Guilford, where he has been a resident since 1994.
A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at New Garden Friends Cemetery.
A native of Alamance County, Mr. McBane was the last child of Anderson Scott and Arka Wilson McBane. He moved to Greensboro in 1927 and in 1935 married Mary Dixon, who passed away in 1991. Mr. McBane was a member of First Friends Meeting, and a member of the Oddfellows Lodge for 65 years. He was a retired Chief Electrician for the Vicks Chemical Corporation. He was affectionately known as the "Candyman" because he loved to handout candy to everyone he came in contact with.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Jean M. and Fred Small of Greensboro; numerous nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends and neighbors.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998 at 3:00 p.m. at First Friends Meeting.

A native of Surry County but a long time resident of Reidsville, he was self-employed as a carpenter and was a member of the Salvation Army.
Survivors include his daughters, Doris Halbrook Morris and Geraldine Halbrook Stanley both of Reidsville; Bernice Halbrook Gibbs of Sophia; son, Garland Halbrook of Providence; 32 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Edward Halbrook and Clarance Halbrook both of Reidsville.

WILMINGTON -- Mrs. Doris Pierce Gregory, 87, of Rogersville Road, and formerly of Supply, NC, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at home.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at the graveside in Oleander Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Billy Batten officiating.
She was born Jan. 16, 1911 in Spring Hope, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph Plummer and Sudie Baines Pierce. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spring Hope and was preceded in death by her husband, Talmadge F. Gregory.
Mrs. Gregory and her husband founded and operated Gregory's Marina and Restaurant at Shallotte Point, NC for many years.
Survivors include one sister, Della Pierce Nussman of Wilmington; one brother, Hubert P. Pierce of Spring Hope; two nieces, Sue N. Yost and husband, J.L. "Buster" Yost of Wilmington; and Linda A. Nussman of Blackwood, NJ; and one nephew, Joseph Zabriskie and wife, Shirley of Dudley.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

JOHN GANT, JR.

John Gant, Jr. of 418 Stewart St. died Jan. 17, 1998, at Moses Cone Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998 at New Light Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Park.
John Henry Gant, Jr. was the son of the late John and Maggie Gant of Greensboro. He was born on Aug. 22, 1912.
After graduating from James B. Dudley High School, he married Annie Cole. He enlisted in the United States Army and fought in World War II. John was a P.O.W. and received the Purple Heart Metal. After his military service, he attended North Carolina A&T State University. He was employed at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and retired from the University in 1982.
Joining New Light Baptist Church in Nov. 1977, brother Gant remained a loyal and faithful member until his health declined. He was a Sunday School Teacher and Trustee.
The cheerful smile and caring ways of brother Gant will be missed. He was a wonderful husband and father.
he leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Annie Cole Gant of the home; son, Ronnie Gant of Charlotte; sister, Margaret Gant of Greensboro; and two grandchildren; one nephew, Herman Gant of Greensboro; and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends 1:30-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

BURLINGTON -- Mrs. Elizabeth Cheek Elder of 1007 W. Davis St., died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at NC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, after a brief illness.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, with Dr. Charles Williams, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
She was a native of Alamance County, the daughter of the late Edward Plummer Cheek and the late Sallie Albright Cheek. She was a retired hosiery executive and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington. She graduated from UNC-G, she and her husband founded Elder Hosiery & Elizabeth-Meade Hosiery Mill. She is preceded in death by her husband, W. Clifton Elder.
Survivors are her daughters, Mrs. Thomas J. (Sandra) Harper of Burlington; Mrs. Holmes (Gail) E. Harden of New Canaan, Conn.; Mrs. Frank R. (Cliffie) Warder of Columbia, SC; son, Mr. James Crawford Cheek of Visalia, Calif.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at the residence. The body will be removed from the Rich & Thomspon Mortuary in Burlington.

BURLINGTON -- Mr. George Clarence Courtney, Jr., 83, of 1607 Wycliff Court, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998.
Mr. Courtney's memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at West Market Street United Methodist Church.
George Clarence Courtney, Jr., was born March 31, 1914 in Lenoir, to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Clarence Courtney, Sr. Mr. Courtney was a 1937 graduate of the University of NC-Chapel Hill. He retired after 33 years, with Burlington Industries in their personnel and insurance departments. He was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church and an associate member of the First United Methodist Church of Elon and an honorary life member of the administrative board. He was an active choir member for 25 years, also served as financial secretary in the Sunday school department for 10 years. He was an active volunteer for the Blood Mobile, Mobile Meals and Volunteer Action Center.
Survivors include his wife, Cecelia Todd Courtney of the home; two daughters, Ms. Ann Courtney of Anchorage, Alaska; Ms. Katherine Courtney of Arlington, Va.; one grandchild, Courtney Baffrey.
The family will receive friends after the service in the brides parlor. Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of High Point, Razz Bo was raised at the Children's Home in Winston-Salem.

She was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, a member of the Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church, was retired from the Washington Mills Company and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Jackson Amos, children, Jackson Brown Amos, Noel Junior Amos and Rachel Amos Shelton.

MEBANE -- Mrs. Nina C. Allen, 87, formerly of 401 Circle Drive, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at The Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, following several years of failing health and a critical illness of one week.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham, by the Rev. Wyatt Aiken, pastor of the Mebane Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Eno Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Hillsborough, NC.
A native of New Hanover County, she had been a resident of Alamance County for the past fifty years. Mrs. Allen was the wife of the late William Monroe Allen and the daughter of the late Thomas Allen Compton and the late Jessie Branson Compton. Mrs. Allen was an elementary school teacher, having taught in many areas of the state. She was the former Headmistress of the Burlington Day School for many years and later retired from The Durham Academy, where she taught special reading classes. She was educated at East Carolina University and was a member of the Mebane Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Agnes Compton Allen of Mebane and Mrs. Sara Roger Compton of Graham. Also there are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by four brothers, Mr. James Allen Compton, Mr. Bluford Cooper Compton, Mr. Thomas Henry Compton, and Mr. William Branson Compton.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Warner at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in the Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel.
Timothy Goode Warner was born in Greensboro on June 23, 1926 to the late D.O. and Lois Goode Warner. He was a graduate of Duke University and the Duke University Law School. He was in private practice in Greensboro for a number of years and was also an attorney with the internal Revenue Service in Atlanta and Dallas. Mr. Warner served as a Judge of the Municipal County Court of the City of Greensboro from 1952-1955. Mr. Warner was a member of the Greensboro Oddfellows Lodge.
Mr. Warner is survived by his wife, Carin Loven Warner of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Nagle of Charleston, SC; step-son, Michael Chaney of Walkertown; sister, Mary Robinson of Greensboro; brother, Joe Warner of Rose Hill; and two grandchildren, Dakota Chaney and Skyler Chaney of Walkertown.
