SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Coleman Parker Altman, 81, of Santa Cruz, formerly of Dunn, N.C., died Monday.
Mr. Altman was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked for the civil service for 30 years in Washington.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Cromartie-Miller & Lee Funeral Home chapel in Dunn by Dr. Karl Minor.
Mr. Altman is survived by his wife, Viola Altman of Santa Cruz; two daughters, Judy Barber of Charlotte, N.C., and Verna Groovertrom of Darlington, S.C.; and a sister, Evelyn Altman-Ladd of Sarasota, Fla.

ABERDEEN -- Bayne Franklin Starnes, 78, of 285 Memory Lane, died Monday in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Mr. Starnes was a Navy veteran of World War II and worked for Carolina Galvanizing Inc. before retiring.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Carter Funeral Home chapel in Ellerbe by the Rev. Sanders Read. Burial will be in Ellerbe Cemetery.
Mr. Starnes is survived by his wife, Freida W. Starnes of the home; two sons, Bayne F. Starnes Jr. of Kansas City, Mo., and Reynolds L. Starnes of Houston; two daughters, Judy S. Cameron of Vass and Kay S. Blue of Pinebluff; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

William Claxton Johnson Sr., 83, of Fayetteville, died Sunday in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Seventh Day Adventist Church by Chaplain Bob Davidson. Burial will be in Cumberland Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Gladys B. Johnson of the home; a daughter, Rebecca K. Bradford of Ojai, Calif.; a son, William C. Johnson Jr. of Cary; two sisters, Berlene Stevens and Lucille Howard, both of Fayetteville; three brothers, Seavy L. Johnson, George T. Johnson and Percy A. Johnson, all of Fayetteville; and four grandchildren.

Retired Army Staff Sgt. Henry Clarence Phelps Jr., 82, of 1907 Halfmoon Circle, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Mr. Phelps was in the Army for 23 years and was a veteran of the Battle for the Bridge in Remagen. He was a former member of Creasy Proctor Masonic Lodge AF&AM and the Sudan Temple.

Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, Esther R. Phelps of the home; and a stepson, David Harris of Tabor City.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Glenn W. Cook Jr., 48, of Chesapeake, formerly of Fayetteville, N.C., died Sunday in Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Mr. Cook was in the Navy for 21 years before retiring.

Retired Army 1st Sgt. John T. Caldwell, 68, of 2966 White Ash Drive, Fayetteville, died Tuesday in his home.
Mr. Caldwell received many awards and medals during his military career including the Bonze Star with cluster. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion.
