WILLIAM M. LITAKER Sr.
William Mundy Litaker Sr., 65, of Hickory, died July 28, 2000, at his residence.

Born Aug. 27, 1934, in Albemarle, he was a son of the late Charles and Frankie Mundy Litaker.

A member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, he retired from Hickory City Schools after serving as an educator for 31 years. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendant and on the church council at his church. A graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he received a master's degree from Appalachian State University and was an Eagle Scout.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Ann Suther Litaker; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William M. and Paula Litaker Sr. of Hickory; a daughter, Tracy Ann Litaker of Anaheim, Calif.; a brother, Charles Litaker Jr. of Hickory; a sister, Frances Litaker Boyd of Hickory; a grandson, Benjamin Litaker of Hickory; and a granddaughter, Kylie Litaker of Hickory.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Richard W. Fritz Jr. at 1 p.m. Monday at his church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will remain at the church after the service.

PHYLLIS S. BENFIELD

Phyllis Stafford Benfield, 74, of Sixteenth Street, NE, died July 28, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 17, 1925, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Amanda Smith Stafford.

A member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, she was employed by Southern Glove in Newton and was later a homemaker. She taught Sunday school and led the church's youth group.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lois A. Jenkins.

Survivors include her husband, Homer Benfield; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harold Benfield of Hickory and Kelvin and Candace Benfield of Charlotte; a daughter, Leemanda Benfield of Hickory; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joann and Henry Wagner and Sarah Vivian Bowman of Hickory; a granddaughter, Lauren Benfield of Charlotte; and a number of nephews and nieces.

The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Homer Greene, Jerry Laughter and Tom Huntsinger at 11 a.m. Tuesday at her church.

The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be her family members.

The family will be at Bass Smith Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

LOLA J. CROUSE

CONOVER - Lola Jones Crouse, 86, of Joe Crouse Road, Maiden, died July 29, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1913, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. and Ida Goodson Jones.

A member of Center View Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe F. Crouse; and two brothers, Burton Jones and Cletus Jones.

Survivors include a son, Wade Crouse of Newton; two daughters, Colleen Gilleland of Maiden and Ailleen Little of Denver; a sister, Julia Hicks of Maiden; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Larry McCracken and Grady Barringer at 4 p.m. Monday at her church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the church from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight.

RAY J. DEAL

Ray Junior Deal, 69, of Snow Creek Road, NE, died July 28, 2000, at his residence.

Born July 31, 1930, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Edward C. and Minnie Houston Deal.

A member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, he retired from C.R. Laine Furniture.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Earl Deal.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Bumgarner Deal; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny R. and Angela Deal of Hickory; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cathy and Eddie Dean Mull of Clarksville, Tenn., and Bonnie Deal Sandlin of Hickory; a brother, Foy Cleatus Deal of Hickory; two sisters, Grace Deal Lail and Betty D. Helms of Hickory; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Rick Carter at 2 p.m. Monday at his church.

The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

ARCHIBALD A. JOYNER

Archibald Andrews Joyner, 86, of Second Street, NE, died July 26, 2000, at Valdese General Hospital.

Born July 30, 1913, in Lenoir, he was a son of the late Rev. Noah and Elizabeth Joyner.

A lay reader of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, he graduated from Hickory High School and earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Lenoir-Rhyne College.

He studied at the RCA Institute and became an electrical engineer. He worked at RCA for 23 years and then worked for 27 years as a manufacturers' representative.

Survivors include his wife, O. Elizabeth Friday Joyner; a son, Edmund Lee Joyner of Illinois; a daughter, Mary Joyner Pryde of California; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service and inurnment will be conducted by the Rev. Howard White at noon Monday at Grace Church in the Mountain in Waynesville.

LaDONNA N. McELROY

MAIDEN - LaDonna Nichole McElroy, 21, of Hudson Chapel Road, died July 27, 2000, at her residence.

Born Aug. 16, 1978, in Lebanon, Va., she was a daughter of David Allen McElroy of Bristol, Tenn., and Donna Booher McCown of Catawba.

She was a waitress.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include two daughters, Destiny Marie McElroy and Ashley Nichole Duncan of the home; a brother, Kevin McElroy of Catawba; a stepbrother, Daniel Shane McCown of Bristol, Tenn.; a stepsister, Jaima Dawn McCown of Bristol, Tenn.; a stepfather, Danny McCown of Catawba; a paternal grandmother, Marion Gibson of Bristol, Va.; a maternal grandmother, Betsy Chafin of Catawba; and stepgrandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Duncan of Catawba.

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Cooley at 11 a.m. Monday at Burke Mortuaries.

Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

SUE K. BERRY

Sue Keller Berry, 99, of Sixteenth Avenue, NE, died July 28, 2000, at Hickory Manor after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 21, 1900, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late William P. and Elizabeth Ann Storms Keller.

A member of New Hope Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Berry; and two daughters, Nadine H. Surrett and Mary B. Stout.

Survivors include three sons, Jim H. Berry and Clarence R. Berry of Hickory and Glenn J. Berry of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Dale Watts at 11 a.m. Tuesday at her church.

The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.

BLAINE E. LIVINGSTON

MAIDEN - Blaine Eugene Livingston, 76, of Union Street, died July 28, 2000, at Pellcare of Hickory.

Born Feb. 10, 1924, in Jonesboro, Tenn., he was a son of the late Lawrence W. and Kate Bricker Livingston.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a machine operator at Desota Furniture.

Survivors include his wife, Aileen Shook Livingston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Miriam and Richard Fox of Maiden and Marsha and Buck Shaw of Charlotte; two brothers, Wayne Livingston of Johnson City, Tenn., and Daniel Livingston; two sisters, Daisy Walters of Johnson City, Tenn., and Violet Blackburn of Charlotte; a stepmother, Elizabeth Livingston of Jonesboro, Tenn.; two grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; two great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Jack Harris at 3 p.m. Monday at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Maiden City Cemetery.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

HATTIE C. HUFFMAN

FALLSTON - Hattie Penidora Canipe Huffman, 78, of Tate Boulevard, SE, formerly of Toluca, died July 26, 2000, at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation.

Born Dec. 22, 1921, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Rome and Jane Pruett Canipe.

A homemaker, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Sain; her second husband, Leonard Huffman; two sons, Edgar Sain and Wayne Huffman; three brothers, Roscoe Smith, Rance Smith and Tommy Canipe; two sisters, Nellie Hendrick and Lola Swink; and two grandsons, Jerry Bradshaw and Larry Bradshaw.

Survivors include a son, Bobby Sain of Casar; two daughters, Katherine Hoyle of Hickory and Nancy Lackey of Taylorsville; a brother, Junior Canipe of Lawndale; two sisters, Mozelle Warlick of Casar and Leona Smith of Lawndale; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday.

Burial was in Olive Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
