Frank Robert Laird, 69, of Hubert died Monday at his home. 
Services will take place Thursday at Oak Grove Methodist Church in Bear Creek with the Rev. James Oliver officiating. Burial will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. 
Survivors include his wife, Antoinette "Toni" M. Laird of the home; two sons, Frances Laird of Rocky Mount and Robert Johnson of Newark, Del.; a brother, Richard Laird of Linwood, Pa.; and 10 grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 8:30 at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro.

Nellie Bell Wells, 86, of Swansboro died Monday at Onslow Memorial Hospital. 
Services were Tuesday at Wells Family Cemetery with the Rev. Roy Wayne officiating. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Wells. 
Survivors include three sons, Dalton Wells, Billy Wells and Dewey Wells, all of Swansboro; and five grandchildren.

Avery 
Nancy Pearl Avery, 63, of Hubert died Sunday at her home. 
Services were today (Wednesday) at Cedar Point Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cedar Point with the Rev. David Harper officiating. Burial followed at Seaside Memorial Park in Swansboro. 
She was a seamstress at Swansboro Garment Factory and was born in Pamlico County. 
Survivors include her husband, Clayton Avery of the home; a son, Jeffrey E. Avery of Bear Creek; four brothers, Kenneth Dixon of Smithfield, Thomas Eugene Dixon of Selma, Leroy Dixon of Sneads Ferry and Robert Earl Dixon of Raleigh; two sisters, Doris Hill of Four Oaks and Josephine Jones of Raleigh; and one grandchild.

Nilsen 
Lt.Col. Donald A. Nilsen, USMC Retired, 71, of Hubert died Sunday at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. 
Services took place at St. Francis Xavier Base Chapel at Camp Lejeune. Burial followed at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. 
A veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam, he was a member of the Elect Reserve Association, a charter member of the Marine Corps Mustang Association, and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was also a life member of the VFW, the American Legion, the USS Albany Association and a USO Board Member. 
Survivors include Marie Blake Nilsen of the home; three daughters, Donna Nilsen Strickland of Orlando, Fla., Maureen Simmons of Alexandria, Va., and Ann Marie Nilsen Hofmann of Mt. Zion, Ill.; two sons, Paul Nilsen of Hubert and John Nilsen of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Paul Edward Nilsen of Kenberma, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Tilman R. Smith, 85, of Hubert died Sunday at Britthaven of Onslow. 
Graveside services took place Tuesday at Seaside Memorial Park in Swansboro with Charles Marino, pastor, officiating. 
Survivors include his wife, Edna Jones Smith; four sons, Ray W. Smith of Hubert, Tim Smith of Ridgeville, S.C., James Frank Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charles David Smith of Norwood, Ohio; a daughter, Berta Lynn Taylor of Goldsboro; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Smith 
Retired Marine Staff Sgt. Francis Smith, 61, of Hubert died Friday at Sunrise Nursing Home in Morehead City. 
Services were Tuesday at St. Mildred's Catholic Church in Swansboro with the Rev. Emile Dusseault officiating. Burial followed at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville with military honors. 
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1977. He served two tours in Vietnam in 1965-1966 and 1969-1970 and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9960. 
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Holes Smith of the home; one daughter, Tanya Smith of Hubert; one son, Albert Smith of Swansboro; his mother, Charlotte Smith of Saxonburg, Pa.; four sisters, Charlene Wilmoth of Elgin, S.C., Marlene Smith of Portland, Ore., Cathy Ruedigar of Cranberry, Pa., and Elizabeth Mailki of York, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Smith of Hubert and William Smith of Newark, Del.; and one grand-daughter.

Diane Szombati, 55, of Hubert died April 13. 
A memorial service took place Friday at Crossroads Christian Fellowship in Jacksonville. 
Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Lane of Hubert; and two grandchildren.

Galati 
Leonard Melvin Galati, 66, of West Jordan, Utah, Swansboro died March 4 at his home. 
He was the husband of Betty Jo (Lisk) Galati, formerly of Swansboro. 
Services were March 8 at the Heritage 2nd Ward in West Jordan. Interment followed at Utah Veterans Memorial Park. 
Other survivors include five sons, Leonard Galati Jr. of Auburn, Wash., Tony Galati of Fairfield, Calif., Rick Galati of El Paso, Texas, Greg Galati of Rutherford, N.J., and Kevin Galati of Budd Lake, N.J.; three daughters, Sheri Di Bernard of Mt. Olive, Amy Onuska of West Valley City, Utah, and Sara Galati of West Jordan; a brother, John Madej of Florida; and 30 grandchildren.

Doris Louise Humeston, 66, of Swansboro died Monday at her home. 
Services will take place Friday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Swansboro with the Rev. Ray Yarborough officiating. 
Survivors include a son, Michael Humeston of Wilmington; a daughter, Dorothy H. Rotchford of Swansboro; her mother, Dorothy Jackson of Reading, Mass.; two brothers, David H. Jackson of New York, N.Y., and Dean Jackson of Winchester, Mass.; two sisters, Deborah D'Antonio of Medford, Mass., and Drucilla Jackson Norris of Reading; and three grandchildren. 
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the N.C. Flood Victims Relief Fund. Donations to Lowe's or CP&L for this fund with be matched.

Mary B. Kern, 86, of Cape Carteret died Sunday at Carteret General Hospital. 
Services will take place Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at National Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y. 
Survivors include two brothers, Dr. Henry O. Schindelar of Hubert and Lawrence Schindelar of Bound Brook, N.J.; and two sisters, Anna Cunningham of Summersville, N.J., and Gina Schindelar of Bound Brook.

Wanda McCorkle Ward, 62, of Swansboro died Sunday at her home. 
Services will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro with the Rev. Jerry Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Ward Cemetery in Swansboro. 
She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Ward, and her parents, Kenneth and Rosie Cox McCorkle. 
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Robinson of Atlanta, Ind., and Lois Mountcastle of Dunn; and a brother, Kenneth McCorkle of Hubert. 
Visitation will be tonight (Wednesday) from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Violetta Margeret Calhoun, 89, of Jacksonville died Sept. 22 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Jacksonville. 
She was the mother of Harold V. Radabaugh of Hubert. 
Services will be at a later date at James C. Lobb Funeral Home in Kingwood, W.Va. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Masontown, W.Va.

Timothy P. "Timmy" McGraw, 24, of Morehead City died Sept. 20 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. 
He was the son of Deborah McGraw of Hubert.

Arther Lyons Jr., 74, of Hubert died Saturday at Onslow Memorial Hospital.

He was a retired postal worker, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Lyons, his father, Arther B. Lyons, and his mother, Kathryn Bagley. 
Survivors include two daughters, Louise King of Chicopee and Katherine Brown of Jacksonville; two sons, David Lyons of Hubert and Arther B. Lyons III of South Hadley, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Smallwood 
John D. Smallwood Sr., 68, of the Bear Creek Community in Hubert died Saturday, Oct. 30 at Onslow Memorial Hospital. 
Services were Tuesday at Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Golden, Robert Hall and Vernon Denning officiating. Burial followed with full military honors at Seaside Memorial Park. 
He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the Marine Corps. He later retired from civil Service at Camp Lejeune. 
Survivors include Retha Bell Smallwood; four sons, John D. Gray 
Harvey Lewis Gray, 100, of Swansboro died Oct. 27 at Cedar Point Medical Center in Swansboro. 
Services were Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home in Jacksonville with the Rev. James McLean officiating. Burial followed at Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville with military graveside honors. 
Gray was recently honored by the National Order of the Legion of Honor, France's highest honor, for serving alongside of French soldiers in World War I. He was also in the U.S. Navy during World War II. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret Gray, and a son, Harvey Edward Gray. 
Survivors include a son, John J. Gray of Madison, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Margaret Gray Moore of Wellesley, Mass.; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mary O'Connor Hixson, 76, of Jacksonville, formerly of Hubert, died Oct. 26 at Liberty Commons Assisted Living.

She was preceded in death by her husband, retired USMC Col. Wilmer Wesley Hixson. 
Survivors include a son, Robert W. Hixson of Hubert; two daughters, Patricia H. Chappelear of Alexandria, Va., and Jean H. King of Warrenton; a sister, Beatrice Meyerhoefer of New York City; and two grandchildren.

He was the owner of King's Country Kitchen in Swansboro and served in the US Army during the Korean War. 
Survivors include two step-daughters and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of Richard B. Burkhart of Hubert. 
Services were Sunday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Turner officiating. Burial followed at Onslow Memorial Park. 
She was a member of Kathryn Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church and an active member of the Golden Age Club and AARP. 
Other survivors include two other sons, Floyd C. Burkhart of Apple Valley, Calif., and Robert L. Burkhart of Jacksonville; a sister, Mildred Ziff of Philadelphia; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
