|Mrs. Lillian Hargett
CONCORD -- Lillian Deal Hargett, 89, of 4130 Winecoff School Rd., Concord, formerly of 105 W. 21st St., Kannapolis, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Five Oaks Nursing Center.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The Rev. William Campbell will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Born May 16, 1912, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Cora Bostian Deal and Walter M. Deal. She went to Farm Life School in China Grove. She worked in the Wrapping Department at Cannon Mills for 50 years. She was a member of the Women Army Corp. of the U.S. Army and a member of Mt. Zion United Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hargett in 1985; brothers Harry, Jay, York, Oron, and Raymond Deal; and sisters Ruth Furguson and Genolia Brawley.
Survivors include one brother, Preston Deal of Kannapolis; and one sister, Sadie Cress of Salisbury. She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Oren Menear
CONCORD -- Oren Lee Menear, 76, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
He was born on Dec. 3, 1925 to the late Oren E. and Dorothy M. Menear. A U.S. Army veteran, Oren was a retired sheet metal worker.
Funeral services will be private.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah M. Rice and her husband Roger of Concord and Crissie L. Dixon of Columbus, Ohio; a son, William M. Menear and his wife Heidi of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family has requested that memorials be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, PO Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026.

Mr. Hall Roach
KANNAPOLIS -- Hall Roach, 83, of 314 S. Juniper St., Kannapolis, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with graveside rites by the DAV of Concord. The Rev. Stan Welch will officiate.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Born Feb. 28, 1918, in Royston, GA, he was the son of the late Dock William Roach and Sallie Elizabeth Crowe Roach. He was a retired supervisor with Martin Marietta Stone Company. He attended Blackwelder Park Baptist Church and served in combat with the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War II. He also was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 8989 in Kannapolis.
He is survived by his wife, Vassie Lou “Casey” Jordan Roach; two step-sons, Balus Chastain of Arden, N.C., and Robert Glenn Chastain of Salisbury; six step-grandchildren, Steven, Suzanne, Steven, David, Chris, and Rhonda; and nine step-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Nancy Towery
CONCORD -- Nancy Dalton Towery, 83, of 1501 Zion Church Rd., Concord, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The memorial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at All Saints Episcopal Church. The Rev. Fred Hoffman will officiate. Burial will take place at the church columbarium.
The family will recieve friends after the service at the church.
Born Sept. 2, 1918, in Wake County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Hedley and Rosa Skinner Dalton. She worked as a homemaker. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, a choir member, and active in Episcopal Church Women and Altar Guild. She was a volunteer for NorthEast Medical Center and the American Red Cross Bloodmobiles. She attended St. Mary's College.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Towery, in 2001; and three brothers, Henry Dalton, Benjamin Dalton, and Robert Dalton.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nancy T. Anderson and husband Wayne, and Mrs. Jane T. Rinker, all of Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Scott Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, and Kimberly Dalton Rinker.

Mrs. Margaret Cartrette
CONCORD -- Margaret Rose Barrier Cartrette, 65, formerly of 4191 Barrier Road, Concord, who had been a resident of The Brian Center for the last year, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center. She was in declining health for a number of years, but her death was unexpected.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joseph A. Miller will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. At other times they will be at the home of her daughter, Robin Drye, at 2765 Shuping Mill Road, Rockwell, NC 28138.
Born Sept. 28, 1936, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Virgie Drye Barrier and George William Barrier. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Cartrette was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Bright Cartrette; two sisters, Effie Moss and Ruby McGraw; and a brother, Joe Barrier Sr.
Survivors include two daughters, Robin Drye of Rockwell and Melodie K. Johnson of Newland; a step-daughter, Dianne Blackburn of Loris, S.C.; two step-sons, Terry Cartrette of Loris, S.C., and Michael Cartrette of Kannapolis; six sisters, Mildred Smith and Belle Cline, both of Kannapolis, Mae Bost and Nell Moose, both of Rockwell, and Naomi Belk and Mary Frances Wise, both of Concord; two brothers, John Barrier and Martin Barrier Sr., both of Concord; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lorene Ritchie
CONCORD -- Mary Lorene Morgan Ritchie, 91, of 30 Roberta Road, Concord, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Dec. 21, 1910, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Mamie Parker Morgan. She retired from Cannon Mills in 1974 and was a homemaker. She attended Concord Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Mrs. Ritchie was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Ritchie.
Survivors include three nieces, Betty Freeman, Colleen Heglar and Patricia Jamieson, all of Concord; and three nephews, Albert Furr of Wilmington, Ray Furr of Georgia, and Roy Cox of Concord.

Mrs. Subetta Flynn
HIGH POINT -- Subetta Rae 'Betty' Grubb Flynn, 74, of 1208 E. Fairfield Road, High Point, went home to be with Jesus Tuesday, January 28, 2002.
A loving step-mother, grandmother and aunt, she was born Aug. 23, 1927, in Guilford County, a daughter of Pearlie Everette and Oma Bates Grubb. She was employed as the restaurant manager at the Trailways Bus Terminal and was later employed at Leggett and Platt Foam Division and at Surge, Inc. She enjoyed crafting, cooking and jewelry making. She was a member of Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church. On Nov. 13, 1972, she married Frank Flynn who died January 13, 1985. She was preceded in death by sisters Jane Byerly, Geneva Loftin and Mary Styles and a brother, Everette Grubb Sr.
Surviving are a step-daughter, Beverly Hurst and husband, Lloyd of Kannapolis, three granddaughters, Lisa Henderson, Lori Griffin, Jenny Von Dongen and husband, Piere'. Two great-grandchildren, four nieces, three nephews, nine great nieces and nephews and five great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special dog named “Sha Sha.”
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Hilliard Memorial Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Steven D. Jones. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Sechrest Family Funeral Care in Archdale. Mr. Carl Helms Jr.
CONCORD -- Carl Evin Helms Jr., 70, of 39 Charing Place, Concord, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Chaplain Britt Baldwin will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkinson Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Charing Place.
Born Dec. 1, 1931, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of the late Carl E. Helms Sr. and Clarcy Lowder Helms. He was a retired veteran of the Navy Seabees having served for 20 years. He was an environmental director for the nursing home industry for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Adams Helms; his daughter, Lora Helms Field and husband Jonathan of Albemarle; two sisters, Betty Roberts and husband James of Orlando, Fla. and Joyce Campbell and husband Wade of Midland; three grandchildren, 2nd Lt. Stephen B. Field of Quantico, Va., Nathan R. Field, and Ryan T. Field; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ALBEMARLE -- Vera Etta Lamb Hill, 75, of 1617 Ocean Forrest Drive, Fernandina Beach, Fla., formerly of Batesville, Ind., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Quality Health of Fernandina.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Stanly Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Albemarle.

A native of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Asheboro. She was the daughter of the later Etta Ferree Lamb and the late William Branson Lamb.
She was a retired secretary and purchasing agent from Sasalows Jewelry. She was of the Methodist Faith. She was a graduate of Asheboro City Schools and Elon College.
Survivors include her husband, Mahlon Hubert Hill Sr., of the home; two sons, Mahlon H. “Chip” Hill Jr., of Snellville, Ga., and Joseph Branson Hill of Amelia Island, Fla.; daughter, Rana Denese Hill, of Amelia Island, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Born August 4, 1918, in Moore County, she was the daughter of the late James and Virda McWhorter Beaver. She worked at Cannon Mills Co. plant one, packaging department until her retirement. She was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, China Grove and had lived in the Kannapolis area most of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Edward Richardson.
Survivors include one son, Gerald Wayne Richardson and wife Betty of Rock Hill, S.C.; one daughter Sharon Richardson Pope and husband William of Kannapolis; three grandchildren, Gerald Wayne Richardson Jr. and wife Lisa of Chapel Hill, Shane Eric Richardson of Rock Hill and Brian Douglas Pope of Kannapolis; three great-grandchildren, Gerald Wayne Richardson III, Ann Louise Richardson and Elle Richardson, all of Chapel Hill; and one sister Irene Albright of China Grove.

SALISBURY -- John Junior Smith, 67, of 726 Crown Point Drive, Salisbury, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at his home.
The service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Southside Baptist Church, where the body will lay in state for one hour before the service. Officiating will be the Rev. Ricky Brown, pastor. Entombment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Born Sept. 24, 1934, in McComas, W.Va., he was the son of the late Pearl Mae Austin Smith and the late John Harvey Smith. He was a graduate of Princeton High School in Princeton, W.Va., and attended Bluefield Business College in Bluefield, W.Va.
He was employed by Southern Appraisal Co. in West Virginia for one and a half years; J.M. Clemshaw Appraisal Co. in West Virginia for one year; Associated Surveys in North Carolina for two years; Cabarrus County Tax Assessor for two years; and Rowan County Tax Assessor's Office for over 31 years as an appraiser until his retirement Sept. 30, 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta Linkous Smith, whom he married Aug. 22, 1964; brother, Alvis I. Smith of Columbus, Texas; two sisters, Laura Thorn of Mullins, W.Va., and Bondean Spence of Louisburg, W.Va.
