Mrs. Jayne Guill

CONCORD — Jayne G. Guill, 76, a devoted mother, homemaker and friend, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Mrs. Guill was born June 19, 1925, in Jacksonville, Fla., the daughter of J. Reid Green and Edith N. Green. She attended Girls High in Atlanta, Ga., and the University of Georgia in Athens. 

She married Robert F. Guill in October of 1945. The family moved to Concord, N.C., in 1950. After residing in New Orleans, La., from 1973 to 1997, the family returned home to Concord to enjoy their retirement among lifetime friends.

Mrs. Guill was an accomplished vocalist, avid gardener, gourmet cook and creative artist. She was a former president of the Concord Junior Charity League, a charter member of the Esoteric Study Club and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Concord.

She worked as a draftsman and freelance artist. While in New Orleans, she was a graphic designer for the Regional Planning Commission of Orleans Parish.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Guill.

Survivors include her children, Reid Guill of Culver City, Calif., Ann Bebe Guill of Durham, N.C., and Rob Guill of Portland, Ore.; and her brother, Troy Green of Atlanta, Ga.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Farrar Miles Williams of Alexandria, Va., Emily Jane Guill of Hollywood, Calif., Jonathan F. Williams of Athens, Ga., and Ellen Ann Guill of Culver City, Calif.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at First Prebysteran Church in Concord. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be designated to Prosthetics for Children in care of the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

Mrs. Catherine Henderson

ROCKWELL — Catherine Louise Steele Henderson, 78, of 1520 Shuping Mills Road, Rockwell, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Brian Nursing Center in Salisbury, after being seriously ill for five days.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Crown In Glory Lutheran Church in Salisbury. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. The Rev. Donald Anthony will officiate.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Satuardy at Crown In Glory Lutheran Church, 517 East Bank St., Salisbury.

Born Nov. 30, 1921, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Hazel and Pauline Steele. She was educated in the public schools of Cabarrus County and was a retired domestic worker. She was a member of Crown In Glory Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the food ministry, building ministry, Senior Citizens, choir, the Lutheran Women Missionary League and the adult Sunday School class.

Mr. Hubert Honeycutt Sr.

BESSEMER CITY — Hubert Lewis Honeycutt Sr., 78, of 1915 Hepzibah Church Road, Bessemer City, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Harrisburg Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Revs. Bill Clevenger, Ken Simmons, and Rodney Quesenberry will officiate.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. 

Born Nov. 13, 1923, in North Carolina, he was the son of the late Ode Honeycutt and Mattie Honeycutt of Charlotte. Mr. Honeycutt was a member of the Derita Lodge #715 AF & AM and he was a Shriner. He was a self--employed truck driver and a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Honeycutt was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Green Honeycutt, who died Sept. 3, 2001.

In addition to his mother, survivors include two sons, Jerry W. Honeycutt of Kings Mountain and Hubert L. Honeycutt Jr. of Bessemer City; two daughters, Donna J. Robinson of Ozark, Ala., and Janet H. Price of Oklawaha, Fla.; a brother, Kenneth Honeycutt of Charlotte; two sisters, Betty Jo Duffel and Catherine Torrence, both of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren and seven great--grandchildren.

Mr. Mark “Scooter” Lynch

KANNAPOLIS — Mark Lee “Scooter” Lynch, 34, of 715 Brumley St., Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. The Revs. Terry Brown and Ronnie Cooper will officiate.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 9 at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a sister, Mishelle Mullis, at 8965 Abby Lane in Kannapolis.

Born Nov. 19, 1967, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Steve Lynch and Peggy Greene Lynch, both of Kannapolis. He was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School and was a member of Homestead Baptist Church. His hobbies included pool and bowling.

Survivors inlcud his mother, Peggy Greene Lynch and her companion, Gary Pless of Kannapolis; his father, Steve Lynch and his wife Peggy Baucom Lynch of Kannapolis; a sister, Mishelle Mullis and her husband Mike of Kannapolis; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Moss and Mrs. Ruth Johnson, all of Kannapolis; a great--grandmother, Bessie Burke of Kannapolis; a niece, Brittany Lynch of Kannapolis; and a nephew, Randy Rayfield Jr. of Kannapolis. Survivors also include several step--brothers and step--sisters, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Polly Paige

KANNAPOLIS — Pauline Childers Paige (Polly), 88, formerly of 526 W. 8th Street, Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, after four months of declining health. She died at the home of her granddaughter, Jaymie Barrier and husband Brandon, with whom she resided for the last five years.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at North Kannapolis Baptist Church. Her body will lie in sate one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Revs. David Myers, Coy Privette, and Ray Pennell will officiate. 

The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday. They will also receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Whitley's Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her granddaughter at 1505 Derbyshire Road, Kannapolis.

Born July 27, 1913, in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Parks Leroy Childers and Nola Barnes Childers. She was employed with Cannon Mills Co., Plant #1, Sewing Dept. for 45 years until her retirement. She was a long--time member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church where she was active in earlier years with the nursery for 35 years and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She was a resident of the area most of her life. She always went the extra mile to help her family and friends and was a caregiver for her father, mother, and sister in their later years.

Mrs. Paige was preceded in death by her husband, Cortis John Paige, who she was married to for 48 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Paige Shue and her husband Bob of Kannapolis; a son, Steve M. Paige and his wife Linda of Lincolnton, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jaymie Shue Barrier and her husband Brandon of Kannapolis, Jackie Shue Huneycutt and her husband Glenn of Locust, Douglas Paige of Charlottesville, Va., and Emily Paige Sanders and her husband Jimmy of Johnson City, Tenn.; five great--grandchildren, Josh Barrier, Paige Barrier, Matthew Barrier, Jeremy Huneycutt, and Meghan Huneycutt; a sister, Mozelle Daniel of Kannapolis; a number of nieces and nephews; and she is also survived by someone she loved like a daughter, Ozell Bunn.

Ms. Martha Sloop

CONCORD — Martha Adeline Sloop, 80, of the Brian Center, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center. 

She was born Oct. 11, 1921, and was the daughter of the late George A. and Myrtle McLester Sloop. Martha worked for Cannon Mills and Kerr Bleachery. She also worked as a seamstress making clothes for her sisters as well as herself. She enjoyed making Christmas ornaments, which she sold in fine shops in several states, including Bergdorf Goodman in New York.

Martha is survived by three sisters, Mary Harrington, Nell Harrington, and Alice Sloop, all of Concord; three nephews, Steve Harrington of Boiling Springs, NC, Randy Harrington of Concord, and Larry Harrington of Kannapolis; and one niece, Jeannie Elliot of Kannapolis.

The family will receive friends Friday at 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at Wilkinson Funeral Home prior to the funeral at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the Rev. John Boyd. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

CONCORD — Jack Wilbur Tipton, 67, of 5275 Lynchburg Drive, Concord, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Ralph Upright

MOORESVILLE — Ralph Moore Upright, 90, of Crown Colony, Mooresville, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Crown Colony.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church in China Grove. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The Rev. G. Wayne Sipe will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Cavin--Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Born Jan. 19, 1912, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late James Crawford and Ciarissa Smith Upright. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church in China Grove.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Elizabeth Henderson Upright.

Survivors include his son, Gary Upright and his wife Betty of China Grove and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Ethel Brandt

KANNAPOLIS -- Ethel Eleanor Evans Brandt, 92, of 411 Idlewood Drive, Kannapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Transisitoal Health Services.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Brant Piper will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church parlor. At other times they will be at the home on Idlewood Drive.

Born Oct. 22, 1909, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Harry Evans and Mary Janet Huck Evans. She moved to Kannapolis from Follansbee, WV in 1994. She was a member of Follansbee Presbyterian Church, where she was very active in many church activities before moving to Kannapolis and becoming an affiliate member of Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis.

Mrs. Brandt was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Henry Brandt, who died on Oct. 28, 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Karleen Warnix of Kannapolis; three grandchildren, Kevin Krumenacker of Kannapolis, Krista Smith and her husband Jeffrey of Kannapolis, and Matthew Warnix and his wife Cindy of Florence, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Warnix and Ashley Warnix; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Helen Canupp

KANNAPOLIS -- Mary (Helen) Weast Canupp, 69, of 1217 Burke Street, Kannapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at her home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in Chain Grove. The Rev. Richard Pethel will officiate.

Born April 6, 1932, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Paul Wright Weast and Effie Lambert Weast. She was retired from Fieldcrest Cannon Inc., Plant 4 in 1990 and she was a member of West A Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Mrs. Canupp was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Canupp, who died Jan. 10, 1984; and a sister, Margaret Christy.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny Canupp, Ricky Canupp, and Jimmy Canupp, all of Kannapolis; three brothers, William (Bill) Weast, Ray Weast, and Kenneth V. Weast, all of Kannapolis; four grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

ALBEMARLE -- Velna Shoe Drye, 90, of 28386 NC Highway 73, Albemarle, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center.

Born March 10, 1911, in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late Roxana Mason Shoe and Robert H. Shoe. She was a homemaker and a life time member of Friendship United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Leo Martin Drye of the home; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bill Dunham

SALISBURY -- William (Bill) Clarkson Dunham, 82, of Spencer and formerly of Heiliq Road, Salisbury, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Genesis Elder Care in Salisbury after being seriously ill for two months.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Marantha Bible Church in Salisbury. Burial will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Council. The church pastor, Rev. Robert Freitas, will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main Street, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home.

Born Oct. 28, 1919 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Ruth Lentz Dunham and Gardner E. Dunham. He was educated in Rowan County Schools and a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He retried after 21 years with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Maranatha Bible Church in Salisbury and of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Frick Dunham of the home, whom he married on Dec. 6, 1975; a step-son, Joseph (Joe) Jones of Charlotte; two step-daughters, Judith Powell of Spencer and Susan Trexler of Concord; a brother, Gardner E. Dunham Jr. of Salisbury; a sister, Sue Benfield of Salisbury; seven step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ondrie Efird

LOCUST -- Mr. Ondrie Deitz Efird, 65, of 24890 Millingport Rd., Locust, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Love's Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Stanfield. The Rev. Leslee Wray and Rev. Louis Pfeiffer will officiate. 

The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at his home at 24890 Millingport Rd. in Locust.

Born September 25, 1936 in Stanly County, he was the son of the late Winfred Carl and Zora Mary Lee Huneycutt Efird. He attended Love's Chapel United Methodist Church in Stanfield and was a charter member of the Ridgecrest Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed listening and playing bluegrass music. His favorite instrument was the banjo but he played anything with strings. He was a member of the Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his brother Wayne Efird; two sisters, Vergie Cooper and Dolena Scott; and his first wife, Frances Lambert Efird.

Survivors include his wife “Dean” Barbee Furr Efird; his daughter, Beth Ruch of Harrisburg; stepson, Jeff Efird of Stanfield; two brothers, Carl Efird and Tony Efird of Albemarle; one sister, Rozena Tucker of Locust and one grandson Andre Rucker of Locust. 
 

Mrs. Mary Faulk

CONCORD -- Mary Virginia Gurley Faulk, 95, formerly of Jim Kiser Road, Concord, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Lake Park Nursing & Rehab.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Concord. Burial will follow at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in Monroe. The Revs. Steve Hicks, Marvin Tyson, and Donald Lisk will officiate.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Midland. At other times they will be at the home of her granddaughter, Shirley Almond, at 465 Running Brook Rd. in Midland.

Born Nov. 21, 1906 in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Mattie Jeanette Gurley and John Cleveland Gurley. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Faulk was preceded in death by her husband, Leander Henderson Faulk; a son, Frank Faulk; and a daughter, Atha Jeanette Kindley.

Survivors include two daughters, Janie Faulk of Weddington and Catherine F. Mullis and her husband Brooks of Indian Trial; a brother, John Gurley of Texas; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

EAST SPENCER -- Georgia F. Gooden, 91, of Magnolia Nursing Center in East Spencer, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Magnolia Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Rutherford Memorial Park. The Rev. Fred Peeler, pastor of First Christian Church in Concord, will officiate.

Receiving will be at the home of Mr. James H. Alexander on 49 Fenix Street in Concord.

Born Sept. 8, 1910 in Denmark, S.C., she was the daughter of the late George and Julia Frazier. 

Survivors include her cousins of Concord and her special friends Mr. and Mrs. James Alexander, who she trusted and loved.

KANNAPOLIS -- Mrs. Utha Richardson Mahatha, 64 of 1501 Kingston Drive, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born June 7, 1937, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Roland Richardson and the Late Hattie Blount Richardson. She was a homemaker, a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, the Usher Board, the Choir, Piedmont Peace Project and Cabarrus Memorial Hospital private duty nursing.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Ray Richardson; two sons, Ronald Mahatha of Kannapolis and Donald Mahatha of Salisbury; two daughters, Terpetha Mahatha of the home and Yolanda Mahatha of Concord; three sisters Ethel Morris of Tallahassee, Fla., Martha Elizabeth Richardson of Kannapolis, and Odessa Jones of Lancaster, S.C.; four grandchildren, Tashina Mahatha, Nepresha Mahatha, Latisha Mims and Cheserae Mahatha; three great-grandchildren and an aunt, Katie Burch of Monroe, N.C.

KANNAPOLIS -- Clifford O. Mitchell, 70, of 919 Grace Ave., Kannapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his home.
