Mr. Buford Drye
SALISBURY -- Buford Ward Drye, 58, of 445 Archer Road, Salisbury, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. The Rev. Danny Hunsucker will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.
Born Aug. 30, 1943, in Concord, he was the son of the late Daisy Horton Drye and B.W. Drye. He was a bartender at B.J.'s Lounge and a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Emily Drye of Salisbury; his daughter, Ginger Drye of Myrtle Beach; his grandchild, Dillan Drye of Myrtle Beach; his brother, Donald Drye of Salisbury; two sisters, Peggy Julian of China Grove and Patty Safrit of Concord; his aunt, Betty Honeycutt of China Grove; and two special friends, J.D. Barrett of Kannapolis and Gayla McDaniel of Salisbury.

Mr. Thomas Griffin
SALISBURY -- Thomas Wayne Griffin, 65, of Salisbury, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at his residence. His death was unexpected.
The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at Lyerly Funeral Home's James C. Lyerly Chapel. The Revs. Billy Honeycutt of Landis Baptist Church and Alan Reed of Wilmar Park Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan Co. Veterans Council.
The family received friends last night at Lyerly Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 29, 1936, in Union County, he was the son of the late Velmer Price Griffin and J. Albert Griffin. He was educate in the Union County schools and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a retired truck driver and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Evie Jean Simmons Griffin of the home; three sons, Terry Griffin of Landis, Steve Griffin of Okinawa and Ricky Griffin of Mooresville; a step-son, Jeffrey Smith of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Judy Griffin Flores of Landis; a brother, William (Bill) Griffin of Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS -- William Thomas “Coot” Hart, 86, of 120 Kennedy St., Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Bryant-Lytle-Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Fred Heglar
MOORESVILLE -- Carl “Fred” Heglar, 81, of 355 Corriher Grange Road, Mooresville, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, of injuries sustained in a car accident.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Sides will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church. At other times the family will be at the home on Corriher Grange Road.
Born March 29, 1920, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Julia Cohen Heglar and the late Victor Cabot Heglar. He was a graduate of Landis High School and retired from Cannon Mills. Mr. Heglar was the last of 12 children. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and a kind and generous man to everyone he met. He was a life member of Concordia Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He was also an avid gardener and excelled in grafting trees.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Hall Heglar, to whom he was married for 55 years; a son, Steve Eugene Heglar of Mooresville; a daughter, Susan Heglar Nicholson of Mooresville; three grandchildren, Stevie V. Heglar of Blacksburg, Va., Jeremy Sloop of Troutman, and Melissa Sloop of Mooresville; and a great-grandchild, Makina Toler of Mooresville.

Mr. Jay Hodge
MOORESVILLE -- Jay C. Hodge, 61, of 417 Beaten Path Road, Mooresville and formerly of Kannapolis, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Ron Selvey will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Beaten Path Road.
Born June 7, 1940 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Jessie Columbus Hodge and the late Ruth Eller Hodge. Mr. Hodge retired four years ago as an automobile dealer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy McCain Hodge; two daughters, Patti Hodge Asberry and her husband Don of Concord and Kristen Hodge of the home; a son, Jeff Hodge and his wife Cathy of Salisbury; two brothers, Bobby Hodge of Kannapolis and Gil Hodge of San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren, Chase Hodge and Amber Hodge, both of Concord, Chad Goodman of Salisbury, and Kaci Chavis of Concord.

Mr. David Kiker
KANNAPOLIS -- David Lee Kiker, 48, of 104 Hilton Ave., Kannapolis, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at NorthEast Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel in Concord. Burial will follow at West Concord Cemetery in Concord with military rites by the DAV Chapter 27. The Rev. Ben Wilson will officiate.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. At other times they will be at the home at 255 Elm Street in Concord.
Born June 4, 1953, he was the son of the late Homer Lee Kiker and Margaret Louise Gasa Kiker of Concord. He was a fixer at Pillowtex and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of North Rowan High School.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dannie Claudette White Kiker.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two daughters, Miss. Cynthia Kiker and Miss. Vicky Kiker, both of Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Miss. Christine Trinidad and Mr. Nathan Kiker; and a brother, Mr. James Franklin Kiker of Salisbury.

Mr. Dick McVicker, Jr.
CONCORD -- Richard “Dick” Wilson McVicker, Jr., 58, of Concord, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in a fatal car accident in Pennsylvania. Dick was a self-made man who knew the value of hard work and perseverance, and earned the respect and love of the people who knew him.
He was born in New Eagle, Pa., and grew up in Monongahela, Pa. Dick graduated from Monongahela High School in 1961 and attended Bucknell University in Pa. and Four County Technical in Ohio. He was the Defiance County (Ohio) Deputy Engineer and also held a surveyor's license from the State of Ohio.
Dick was actively involved in the domestic and international steel industry. In 1974, he moved to Charlotte with Midrex Corporation as a design engineer. He later worked as Chief Designer for Fuchs Systems in Salisbury until 1993, when he became a founding partner of AmeriFab in Indianapolis, Ind. Dick retired from AmeriFab in 1998 and returned to Concord to be with his children and grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his mother, Betty Davis McVicker. Dick is survived by his wife, Pamela Garner McVicker of Concord; his father, Richard W. McVicker, Senior of Monongahela, Pa.; his sister, Katherine Ballein of Pottstown, Pa.; and his brother, David A. McVicker of Monongahela, Pa. Dick also leaves behind his two daughters, Sandra McVicker Parrott of Charlotte and Deborah McVicker Fobie of Clayton, N.C. and one son, Richard Samuel McVicker of Charlotte. Through Sandra, he leaves two precious grandchildren, Thomas Jacob Parrott and Shelby Redelin Parrott.
Visitation will be held at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home in Charlotte on Friday, Nov. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Dick was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Concord. A memorial service will be held at All Saints' on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.
A memorial service is planned for Monongahela, Pa. in the spring.

Mr. Wade Taylor
KANNAPOLIS -- Wade Leroy Taylor, 81, of 105 Crestwood Court, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his home, after declining health for 13 months and being seriously ill for two weeks.
The funeral will be 8 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Carolina Memorial Park. 
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on Crestwood Court.
Born Dec. 23, 1919, in Kannapolis, he was the son of the late James Walter Taylor and Ora Mary Robinson Taylor. He operated his own bookkeeping and tax preparation service prior to his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Kannapolis and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Barringer Taylor; two daughters, Barbara T. Smith and her husband Wally of Concord and Patricia T. Wilson and husband Lew of Wilkesboro; a sister, Ora Lee Taylor Dennis of Richmond, Va.; and three grandchildren, Brent Wilson, Rich Wilson and Jennifer Smith.

CONCORD — Eileen Condo Booth, 70, of 1105 Memory Lane, Concord, formerly of Canton, Ohio, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Avante at Concord. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel in Concord. The Rev. Gary Price and the Rev. Larry Irvin will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the family plot at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Canton, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Born March 19, 1931, in Harrison County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Mildred Walker Condo and LeRoy Condo. She was a homemaker and a member of Church of the Trinity. Survivors include her husband, Alvin Ernest Booth; two sons, Craig Booth and his wife Daylene of Baltimore, Md., and James Valentine and his wife Ann of Duluth, Ga.; three daughters, Cynthia Martin and her husband Larry of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Alison Hassler and her husband David of Concord, and Amy Strickland and her husband Lincoln of Rock Hill; and seven grandchildren, Bobby and Jeff Valentine, Jordan Martin, Meghan and Nick Booth, Devin and Preston Strickland. KANNAPOLIS — Thomas William (Coot) Hart, 86, of 120 Kennedy St., Kannapolis, died at NorthEast Medical Center. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at S. Harding Street Church of God. Born Dec. 5, 1914, in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late Otha and Hannah Withers Hart. He was a retired Cannon Mills employee for 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Lila Belle Hart; two daughters, Deborah Washington Foster and Valerie Lipscomb, both of Kannapolis; two sons, Jackie Washington and David Eugene Washington, both of Kannapolis; two sisters, Mary Rice of New York and Lula Carson of Mooresville; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Gaines of Concord; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Elaine Sessum 
MEMPHIS — Elaine Holt Sessum, 83, of Memphis, Tenn., died of pneumonia Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Primacy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis. She was a retired insurance secretary, homemaker and a member of Calvary Episcopal Church for over 50 years. Mrs. Sessum, the widow of William “Buck” C. Sessum, leaves a son, the Rev. Robert L. Sessum of Lexington, Kentucky; one grandson, William Paul Sessum of Raleigh, N.C.; and one sister, Dorothy Ross of Memphis. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Episcopal Church in Memphis. A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery East. KANNAPOLIS — Thomas Woodrow Steelman, Sr. (Tommy), 36, of 350 Mobile Home Park Drive, Lot #3, Kannapolis, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, on arrival at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Wood will officiate.

Mrs. Myrtle Whitley
ADVANCE — Myrtle Wynne Whitley, born in Williamston, N.C. in 1906, died on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Bermuda Village in Advance, N.C.
She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Julian King Whitley. They lived in Kannapolis for most of their life.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont, N.C., conducted by Rev. Martin Armstrong.
