Louise 'Lou' M. Hickman

Louise "Lou" Menefee Hickman, 87, died Monday, October 14, 2002, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison. A memorial service was held 2 p.m. at St. Columb's Episcopal Church at 550 Sunnybrook Road in Ridgeland on Thursday. Wright and Ferguson Home on High St. handled arrangements.

Mrs. Hickman was married to the late Captain William Harris Hickman. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ron Monachelli of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son and daughter-in-law, Freddy and Mary Margaret Hickman of Ridgeland. Also four grandchildren: Brad Jones and his wife Lisa of Mesa, Ariz., Missy Hickman Hollis and her husband Jason of Ridgeland, Page Hickman Wilson and her husband Keith of Brandon, and Gantt Hickman of Ridgeland and Oxford. Also two great-grandsons, Will Jones and Sammy Jones of Mesa, Ariz.. Additional survivors include two sisters, Jane Menefee Schutt of Florence, Anne Menefee Hilz and her husband Ken of Piano, Texas, and one brother Jim Menefee Schutt of Forney, Texas.

Helen M. Lee

Helen M. Lee, 91, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at Madison County Nursing Home. Services were 2 p.m. Thursday, October 17 at Lakewood Funeral Home with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Lee is survived by two sons, Dr. Rod Lee of Madison, and Corbin R. Lee of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Gail Bankston of Jackson, and Jennifer Garner of Raleigh; brother, Harold Cosier of Lincoln, Neb.; sister, Wanda Enderle of Aurora, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ryan Patrick Miller

Ryan Patrick Miller, 15, died Friday, October 18, 2002, at the Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Center in Greenville of burns received in an automobile accident on Thursday evening in Jackson. Visitation was held Sunday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland and 10 a.m. Monday at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Madison. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with burial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland.

Survivors include: parents, Lee and Mary Miller of Ridgeland; brother, Jordan Miller; sister, Laurel Miller; maternal grandparents, Wm. S. Hunt of Barnsville, Ga. (and the late Nell Wilkinson Hunt); paternal grandparents, Dick and Valda Miller of Jackson; aunts and uncles, Dr. Ronnie and Mary Hunt of Pass Christian and Carol and Steve Holly of Clinton; cousins, Tyler Hunt of Monroeville, Ala., Trey Weir and his wife, Susan of Jackson, Tyler Holly of Clinton; and second cousin, Sarah Katherine Weir of Jackson.

Robert Gary Ratliff

Robert Gary Ratliff, 70, a native of Tylertown, and resident of Bon Secour, Ala., died Monday, October 14, in Daphne, Ala. Services were 2 p.m. Thursday, October 17 in the chapel of Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley, Ala. Interment followed in Pine Rest Memorial Park in Foley.

He is survived by his wife, Lee Ratliff of Bon Secour, Ala.; his daughters, Robin Haskett of Jackson and Pat McDaniel of Madison, his stepsons, Dwight Leach of Waynesboro and Mark Leach of Brandon; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dr. Aquilino P. Rufin

Dr. Aquilino P. Rufin, 79, died Friday, October 4, 2002, at Hospice Ministries. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 11 at St. Richard Catholic Church and burial followed in Jessamine Cemetery. 

Survivors include: his daughter, Ruby Rufin Ealy of Madison; granddaughter, Nicole Ealy Browder of Madison; grandson, Frederick Ealy of Madison; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jazminn Browder both of Madison & Amber Rose Ealy of Madison. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace McCalip Atkinson

Grace McCalip Atkinson, 88, of Ridgeland died Oct. 23, 2002, at Hospice Ministries.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at Breeland Funeral Home in Canton with burial in the Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland.

Survivors include: her nephews, Dave Clements, Billy Clements, Johnny Clements and Gene Clements, all of Brandon, and Bill Clements of West Virginia. 

Odell Leitaker Foster

Odelle Leitaker Foster of Canton, 83, died Nov. 1, 2002, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. 

Services were held Nov. 2 at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with burial in Canton Cemetery.

Survivors include: her daughters, Jerrolyn Foster Inman of Lafayette, La., and Carolyn Foster Dickerson and husband Joe Dickerson of Kingwood, Texas; sister, Willie Mae Millsaps of Canton; grandchildren, Will and Sallie Ann Inman, Laura and John Trautner, Clay and Janene Dickerson; and great-grandchildren, Stewart and Laura Catherine Inman, Bethany and Harrison Dickerson.

Meredith Owen Culipher

Meredith Owen Culipher of Canton, 88, died Nov. 3, 2002, at Yazoo City Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Services were held Nov. 4 at Canton Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Sulphur Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include: his daughters, Jeanette Waldrop and Elizabeth Pickens, both of Canton; brothers, Earl Culipher of Canton and Elmer Culipher of Tuscaloosa, Ala; sisters, Maggie Beal of Canton and Hazel Ballard of Carthage. He is also survived by six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Dennis M. Hankins

Dennis Merton "Hank" Hankins of Madison, 84, died Oct. 26, 2002, at St. Dominic/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Services were held Oct. 29 at Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with burial in the Natchez Trace Cemetery.

Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Bond Hankins of Madison; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra H. Hammett and Jim Hammett of Dallas; Andria West of Polkville; Carol Weeks of Clinton; and Gayle Sumrall and Roy Sumrall of Clinton; five grandsons and four great-grandsons.

Eleanor L. Bivings

Eleanor Bivings of Ridgeland, 90, died Oct. 27, 2002, at home.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 29 at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland.

Survivors include: her son, Jackie Bivings of Ridgeland; daughters, Barbara Clark of Jackson and Carolyn Stevens of Edinburg. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Miriam Law Smith

Miriam Law Smith, 89, died Oct. 27, 2002, at her home in Canton.

Memorial services were held Nov. 1 at Canton Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Paul Smith of Baton Rouge; parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Law of Baton Rouge; brothers, Robert William and John William; and sisters, Ellen Houtz, Doris Lois Law and Evelyn Law.

Survivors include: her sister-in-law, Ellen Jane Law of Ontario, Calif., five nieces and one nephew.

Tommy L. Barker Sr.

Tommy L. Barker Sr., 55, of Madison died Jan. 14, 2003, at his residence. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland with burial in Garden of Memories in Waterloo, Iowa.

Survivors include: his wife, Linda Cook Barber of Madison; sons, Tommy L. Barker Jr. of Shreveport, La., Kevin Heath Barker and Shaun P. Barker, both of Waterloo, Iowa; mother, Wilma Reisor of Greenville, Texas; and brother, Jerry Barker of Greenville, Texas. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kaela Barker, Kameron Barker, Jessica Barker, Savannah Barker and Breanna Barker.

Rebecca Lynn "Becky" Porter, 21, of Flora, died Jan. 12, 2003.

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Lakewood Memorial Park.

Survivors include: her mother, Susan Abernathy of Flora; father and stepmother, Norris and Gayle Porter of Florence; sisters, Jamie Porter of Jackson, Ashley Bedwell of Flora, Kimberly and Samantha Porter, both of Florence; nephew, Jacob Porter of Jackson, maternal grandparents, George E. and Sarah Abernathy of Flora; paternal grandparents, Maureen Porter of Bolton, and Bobby and Ida Porter of Star.

Bert A. Welch Jr., 68, of Ridgeland, died Jan. 12, 2003, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at St. Columb's Episcopal Church with burial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery. 

Survivors include: his daughters, Nancy Welch Wilson and husband James B. Wilson Jr. of Houston, Texas; Cindy Welch Bryan and husband William G. Bryan III of Madison; son, Bert A. Welch III and wife Trina Ikerd Welch of Ridgeland; nine grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Welch Bogan and Eleanor Welch Mae of Aberdeen; and a special friend, Sandi Matthews.

Lula Naomi Cook

Lula Naomi Cook, 91, of Canton died Jan. 15, 2003, at Myles Retreat in Jackson.

Funeral services were held Jan. 18 at the Breeland Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with burial in Canton Cemetery. 

Survivors include: son, Lawson L. Cook Jr. and wife Kay of Richman, Texas; daughter, Fay C. McFarland and husband Ray of Raymond; grandchildren, Kenneth Phillips, Kenny McFarland, Larry McFarland, Terry McFarland, Darryl McFarland and Dena Livingston; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Naomi Dodd Burkett

Naomi Dodd Burkett, 92, of Jackson died Jan. 17, 2003, in Madison. 

Graveside services were held Jan. 19 in Canton Cemetery. Breeland Funeral Home of Canton handled arrangements.

Survivors include: daughter, Faye Dial Hudgins and husband, James of Madison; sister, Mildred Axtell of Canton; and grandchildren, William Hudgins and Jonathan Hudgins, both of Madison.

Robert Clayton Watts

Robert Clayton Watts, 75, of Canton died Jan. 15, 2003, at Veteran's Hospital in Jackson. 

A memorial service was held Jan. 20 at First Baptist Church of Canton.

Survivors include: sisters, Mrs. Glynn Cook of Canton and Mrs. Joseph Lamar of Mobile, Ala.; nieces, Beth Chapman of Mobile and Betty Graham of Kingwood, Texas; and nephews, Roger Cook of Jackson, Tenn., and Lane Cook of Lafayette, La.

Dorothy Evelyn Amos Leflore, 59, of Canton died Jan. 15, 2003, at Madison County Medical Center in Canton.

Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Carthage with burial in the church cemetery. Peoples Undertaking Co. of Canton handled arrangements.

Survivors include: husband, Leon Leflore of Canton; daughter, Mollie Conway and husband Lawrence of Jackson; sons, Leon M. Leflore Sr. and wife Queenetta of Stafford, Va., and Gerome Leflore and wife Shunda of Crystal Springs; brother, Willie B. Amos Jr. and wife Helen of Greenville; uncle, Walter Barnes and wife Hilda of Durham, N.C.; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memphis, Tenn.

Delbrico Madariel Matlock, 28, of Memphis, a former Canton resident, died Nov. 30, 2002, in Memphis, Tenn. 

Funeral services were held Dec. 6, 2002, at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Canton. Family Memorial Funeral Services Inc. of Canton handled arrangements.

Survivors include: mother, Bertha Matlock of Memphis; father and stepmother, Robert L. and Cathen Matlock of Jackson; sisters, Dawn Chinn of Nashville, Tenn., Christina W. Lee of Canton and Kewanna L. Matlock of Memphis, Tenn.; brothers, Christopher Matlock and wife Bridget, and Cedric Matlock, all of Jackson; paternal grandmother, Berniece Chambers of Jackson; paternal grandfather, the Rev. Warren Kelly and wife Genevience of Columbus, Ohio; and nine aunts and seven uncles. He is also survived by four nieces and one nephew.
