|Essie McBride dies at age 105
Lulu Essie McBride, 105, Joplin route 6, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at her home after an illness.
Mrs. McBride was born March 6, 1891, in Joplin, where she had lived most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was an Alanon sponsor for more than 40 years.
She married Bert McBride in October 1906 in Baxter Springs, Kan. He died in November 1957.
Survivors include a daughter, Marie McBride, Joplin route 6; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
Dayle ``Bud'' Vantrease, 76, 1305 Grand Ave., died at 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 1996, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Vantrease was born July 10, 1920, at Joplin. He was a lifetime resident. He was a mechanic at Joplin Butane before retiring. He was a Baptist and a veteran of the Army.
He married Dorris Haskins on June 5, 1975, at Miami, Okla. She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Patricia Weaver, Rockland, Maine, Judy Dean, Muskogee, Okla., and Mary Vantrease, Jefferson City; two stepsons, Mike Haskins, Edmonton, Canada, and Gary Haskins, Andrews Air Force Base, Wash.; three stepdaughters, Vicki Milton, Joplin, Sharon Shockley, Webb City, and Glenda Endicott, Woodstock, Ga.; a brother, Howard Vantrease, Springfield; a sister, Virginia Pickering, Cheyenne, Wyo.; six grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-stepgrandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. The Rev. Albert Evans will officiate. Burial will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark Milton, Gary Shockley, Ray Weaver and Ron Dean.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military graveside services.
MOUNT VERNON, Mo. … Pauline B. Daughtrey, 88, Fayetteville, Ark., a former resident of Mount Vernon, died at 8:55 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at the home of a daughter in Fayetteville after a long illness.
Mrs. Daughtrey was born May 1, 1908, at Carthage. She moved from Mount Vernon to Fayetteville in January 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Temple, Mount Vernon.
She married Willard S. Daughtrey on Feb. 23, 1930, at Carthage. He died May 27, 1990.
Survivors include a son, Larry Daughtrey, Searcy, Ark.; four daughters, Thelma Stone, Fayetteville, Corene McCormick, Springfield, Geraldine Painter and Reva Breckenridge, both of Joplin; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mount Vernon. Burial will be in Round Grove Cemetery, west of Miller.
Pallbearers will be Monty Breckenridge, Steven McCormick, Bruce Daughtrey, Brian Stone, Stacey Gammon, T.L. Painter and Johnny Stone.
Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
CARTHAGE, Mo. … Bernadine Everet, 64, Carthage, died at 1:20 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 1996, at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Everet was born April 13, 1932, in Newton County. She had lived in the Carthage area most of her life. She was employed by Schreiber Foods Inc., retiring in 1994. She was a member of Carthage First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Don Higgs, Carthage, and Rick Higgs, Miami, Okla.; a daughter, Becky Simpson, Carthage; a brother, Carl Everet, Stark City; three sisters, Lora Mae Price, Eagle Rock, Betsy Everet, Neosho, and Shirley King, Brookfield; six grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and three great-stepgrandchildren.
The body will be cremated.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. The Rev. S. Ray Crews will officiate.
Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, in care of the funeral home.
Neva Goodwin dies at age 100
MONETT, Mo. … Neva Goodwin, 100, Yreka, Calif., a former Monett resident, died at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, at the home of a daughter in Yreka, with whom she lived.
Mrs. Goodwin was born March 31, 1896, in Barry County.
Her husband, T.R. ``Ray'' Goodwin, died Oct. 27, 1969.
Survivors include a son, Ted Goodwin Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Katherine Hamblin, Yreka; a sister, Christine Driskill, Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Waldensian Cemetery, south of Monett.
Arrangements are under the direction of Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett.
NEOSHO, Mo. … Marsha Mundean Marrs, 45, Fort Gibson, Okla., a Neosho native, died at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, at Tulsa, Okla., after a long illness.
Miss Marrs was born Dec. 6, 1950, at Neosho. She graduated from Crowder College, Neosho. She was a licensed practical nurse with MediCorp Health Care. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Muskogee, Okla., and had belonged to the singles group there.
Survivors include a son, Andrew Marrs, Fort Gibson; and a sister, Paula Moss, Neosho.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery, east of Diamond.
The body will be cremated.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cremation Society of Oklahoma, Tulsa.
NOEL, Mo. … Lenord Gene Moss, 51, Noel route 2, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at Gravette (Ark.) Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Moss was born June 7, 1945, at Fayetteville, Ark. He moved to Noel from Springdale, Ark., about seven years ago. He worked about 17 years for Allen Canning Co., Springdale, retiring when he became disabled.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Moss; a son, Allen Dale Moss, of the home; three daughters, Angel Rhine, Noel, Barbara Graham, Rush Springs, Okla., and Sylvia Sue Moss, Anderson; his mother, Katie Lea Moss, Oakdale, Tenn.; three brothers, Glen Moss, Rockwood, Tenn., Dean Moss, Elm Springs, Ark., and Donnie Moss, Oakdale; three sisters, Ruth Ridges, Springdale, Shirley Sue Rhine, Harriman, Tenn., and Barbara June White, Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
Private services and burial will be under the direction of Ozark Funeral Home, Noel.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
CARTHAGE, Mo. … Edith M. Purrington, 91, Carthage, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 1996, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage, after an illness.
Mrs. Purrington was born March 3, 1905, at Baltimore, Md. She had lived in the Joplin area since 1985, moving from Lubbock, Texas. She was a ward clerk at West Texas Hospital, Lubbock, for 20 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Joplin.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Daniel Purrington, Metairie, La.; two daughters, Jane Hoover, Joplin, and Susanna J. Purrington, Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Brooke Meanley, state of Virginia; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The body will be cremated.
Arrangements are pending with Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
JENKINS, Mo. … Laverne E. Stockton, 68, Jenkins, died at 10:35 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, after an illness.
Mr. Stockton was born March 16, 1928, at Jenkins and was a lifetime area resident. He attended Lone Elm School at Jenkins and was a graduate of Cassville (Mo.) High School. He was a cattle and dairy farmer. He also hauled cattle for various residents of Barry County for several years. He had worked for MFA Producers Creamery, now Mid-Am Dairy, for several years. He also had served on the MFA Board. He was a member of the Clio Cemetery Board and a member of the Church of Christ.
He married Bonnie Chapman on Nov. 6, 1946. She survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Jack Stockton and Steven Stockton, both of Cassville, and Leroy Stockton, Exeter; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. The Rev. Wayne Deffenbaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Clio Cemetery, Jenkins.
Pallbearers will be Charles Ruscha, Max Hudson, Dennis Swofford, Denny Wolf, Doug Fare and Tom Moore.
PURDY, Mo. … Aquilla Swadley, 90, Purdy, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 1996, at a Monett nursing home after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Swadley was born April 9, 1906, in Stone County, Mo.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Easyville Fundamental Methodist Church, near Monett, and also attended the Chapel of Grace Church, near Monett.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie Swadley, Purdy; two daughters, Freida Mann, Independence, and Juanita Thomas, Purdy; a sister, Lizzie Yearton, Monett; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home, Monett, with the Rev. Jim Copley and the Rev. Ron Howerton officiating. Burial will be in the Kings Prairie Cemetery, east of Monett.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

PITTSBURG, Kan. … John W. ``Jack'' Braithwaite, 66, 712 S. Broadway St., died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Braithwaite was born July 21, 1930, in Pittsburg and was a lifetime resident. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and Pittsburg State University. He was secretary/treasurer at McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation until his retirement. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
There are no immediate survivors.
Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. The Rev. Sam Pinkerton will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg.
The parish rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family will be at the home of Mary Aubert, 112 W. Quincy St., Pittsburg.

GIRARD, Kan. … Joseph Harold Gannon, 83, Girard, died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at a Pittsburg nursing home after an illness.
Mr. Gannon was born March 16, 1913, at Lawrence, Long Island, N.Y. He grew up and attended schools in New York. He had worked as an office technician at Craw-Kan Telephone at Girard. He retired in 1980.
He was a member of United Pentecostal Church at Carl Junction, Mo. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Childers, Arma; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Carl Junction (Mo.) Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard.

GALENA, Kan. … Diane A. Link Myers, 55, 901 Short St., died at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 1996, at a Galena nursing home after a short illness.
Mrs. Myers was born Jan. 20, 1941, at Galena. She was a lifetime area resident. She worked in the restaurant business for five years. She retired in the early 1980s as an attorney's assistant.
Survivors include her mother, Marie Link, Joplin, Mo.; two sons, Richard Myers and Rob Myers, both of Galena; and one grandchild.
The body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary, Joplin. The Rev. Tim Van Patton will officiate.
