Goldie Gardiner; a daughter, Mrs.
Laverne Johnston, and one grand-
daughter, all of Indianapolis.

SEEBER, JERRY - age 49, of Briceville, passed away Saturday December 11, 1999
at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Mr. Seeber was a member of the
Waldensview Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed by Lockheed-Martin as
a chemical operator. Born February 13, 1950 in Anderson County to the late
Fletcher and Launa Mitchell Seeber. Also preceded in death by brother,
Fletcher Seeber, Jr. Mr. Seeber was a loving husband, father, and grandfather

McCARTY, IVON EUGENE - age 77, of Clinton, passed away, Thursday, December 9,
1999, at his residence. Ivon was a member of Andersonville First Baptist
Church where he served for many years as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He
was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and University of Georgia.
Employed for 37 years at the University of Tennessee in the Agriculture
Extension and Food Technology Departments. Member of the Honor Society of
Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta. He organized the national Sweet Sorghum
Association and was a member of B-17 and was shot down on his 50th mission
and taken German prisoner. He was awarded Sliver Star, 2 Oak Leaf medals,
Prisoner of War medal, American Campaign medal, European-African-Middle East
Campaign Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the World War II
Honorable Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Preceded in death by infant
son, David Eugene McCarty; parents, Floyd & Elizabeth McCarty; sister, Geneva
Hashbarger; brother, Woodrow McCarty. Survivors: wife of 52 years, Ruth Sharp

PHILLIPS, EDWIN - age 68, passed away Sunday, December 12, 1999 at his home
in Dutch Valley. He was born November 18, 1931 in Anderson County. He was a
Baptist Minister of 45 years, and Pastored several churches in the
surrounding area. He was a member and former pastor of Laurel Branch Baptist
Church. He was employed by the Anderson County Highway Dept. and a
representative of several insurance companies. He owned and operated Edwin's
furniture in the Lake City area for several years. Edwin enjoyed being a
supply minister to area churches. Edwin will be well remembered for the
prayer garden he established in 1998. Hobbies that Edwin enjoyed were
farming, gardening, traveling, and retail sales. He is preceded in death by
his parents, Link & Lou Phillips; brother, Carvin Phillips. Edwin was a
devoted husband and father who enjoyed his family very much. Survivors: wife,
Beatrice Phillips of Lake City; sons & daughter-in-laws, Garry & Janet
Phillips of Clinton, Danny Phillips of Lake City, Mike & Donna Phillips of
Lake City; daughter & son-in-law, Kim & Greg Walls of Clinton. Edwin was a
devoted and loving grandfather of 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren;

ARMSTRONG, RAY CROWLEY - age 83, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, December 15,
1999 at his home. Mr. Armstrong was born in Belmont, Vt. on September 8,
1916, the son of Miriam Crowley and Ralph Chaffee Armstrong. In 1938, he was
graduated from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla. with a degree in
physics. He later received an Honorary Doctorate in Physics from the
University of Miami. He joined the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1938 in a
civilian capacity, with his first assignment being the Sardis Dam project in
Mississippi. Subsequently he was assigned with the Corps at Hornell,
Binghamton, and Syracuse, NY. Mr. Armstrong entered the Army in 1943 as a
second lieutenant and was assigned to the Manhattan Engineer District as Area
Engineer on a medical research project at the University of Rochester. In
late 1944 he was assigned to the Manhattan District's research project in Oak
Ridge. After leaving the Army in July 1946 with the rank of Captain, Mr.
Armstrong continued as a civilian with the Research Division; later
transferring to the Oak Ridge Production Division of the Atomic Energy
Commission with it's establishment in January 1947. The Commission assumed
responsibility for the atomic energy programs. Mr. Armstrong was one of 170
employees who served the AEC during its entire 36 year history from 1947 to
1974. In 1947, he was named Assistant Director of the Production Division and
was appointed Director of that division in 1950. In 1957, he was named
Assistant Manager for Oak Ridge Operations and was promoted to Deputy Manager
in May, 1971, a position he held until his retirement in 1974. While having
broad responsibility in the administration of Oak Ridge Operations' many
research and production programs, Mr. Armstrong had prime responsibilities in
the administration of the AEC's uranium enrichment programs and was widely
recognized as one of the nation's experts in that field. He received the
AEC's Distinguished Service Award in 1974 for outstanding leadership and
major contributions to uranium enrichment and weapons fabrication programs.
He was also awarded the AEC's Award for Superior Performance in October 1956.
In addition to his work with the AEC, Mr. Armstrong served as a member of the
Board of Directors for the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge from 1969 to
1975 and from 1977 to 1982. He was also a member of the Board of
Commissioners, Oak Ridge Utility District for 13 years. Mr. Armstrong's first
wife, Ann McKee Armstrong and a son, Ray C. Armstrong, Jr. died earlier. Mr.
Armstrong is survived by: wife, Peggy W. Armstrong of Oak Ridge; daughter,
Dianne Armstrong Moore; son, Ralph E. Armstrong; granddaughter, Stephanie
Moore Jarvis, all of Atlanta, Ga.; 4 step-children, Edward D. Wilson of Oak
Ridge, Steven A. Wilson and Greg K. Wilson of Knoxville, Barbara Wilson
Pippin of Union, SC; 4 step grandchildren, Alex Pippin and Wilson Pippin of
Union, SC, and Brad Wilson and Laura Wilson of Knoxville. A memorial service
will be held Saturday, December 18, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the First United
Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Henderlight officiating. Memorials may be made
to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge,
TN 37830 or to the First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike,

STEELE, ELMER EARL - age 90, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, December 14,
1999, at the Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge. He was a US Army
veteran. Elmer had worked at Magnet Mills in Clinton. He retired as a Steel
Worker from Youngstown Sheet & Tube in East Chicago, Ind. Preceded in death
by wife, May Steele; parents, Jeff & Annie Hendren Steele; sister, Hazel
Monroe; brother, Carl Steele. Elmer was born September 9, 1909 in Anderson
County. Survivors: daughter, Earlene and husband Bob White of Highland, Ind.;
grandsons, Robert White of Oklahoma, Randall White of Kansas, Richard White
of North Carolina; great grandchildren, Daniel White, William White, Alan

Ridge for approximately 30 years. Preceded in death by husband, Robert "Bob"

Lane, Longfellow;
maternal grandmother, Betty Kauffman, South Market Street,
McVeytown;
paternal grandfather, William E. Feathers, Ohesson Manor,
Lewistown; and a
great-uncle, William R. Booth, South Market Street, McVeytown.
She was a freshman at East Stroudsburg University.
She was a 1999 honor graduate of Lewistown Area High School,
where she
was a member of the four time District 6 Championship Girls
Basketball Teams
and the 1996-97 and the 1997-98 State Championship Girls
Basketball
Teams.
She was also a four-year member of the Lewistown Area High
School Girls
Soccer Teams, and a member of the National Honor Society.
She was twice listed in the Who's Who Among American High
School Students
and was the 1999 WCHX outstanding girls basketball player for
Mifflin County.
She was Methodist by faith.
She loved to draw and spend time with her friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McVeytown United
Methodist
Church, South Queen Street, McVeytown, with the Rev. Marian E.
Hartman
officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery,
McVeytown.

SHERWOOD, ROY - age 92, of Andersonville, passed away Tuesday, December 7,
1999 at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. For many years, Roy was a
popular & colorful employee of the Museum of Appalachia of Norris where he
helped with the farm, gardens & mowing of the grounds & pastures. Mr.
Sherwood was a native of Bethel Valley near the Anderson-Roane County line,
an area acquired by the government in 1943 for the building of Oak Ridge.
Preceded in death by parents, John & Vicey Sherwood; sons, Jackie & Bill
Sherwood; daughter, Judy Littleton; grandson, Kenneth Roach; sisters, Sephie
Stringfield & Elscie Sherwood; brothers, John, Harvey, Elmer, Ed, & Lonnie

pioneers of Ohio. She was born in Bedford, Bedford Co., Penn.; moved to Ohio in
1809, and lived in the first house built on the site of New Philadelphia,
Tuscarawas county. She came to Williams county in 1844, and remained here until
her death. She was a devoted and consistent member of the Lutheran Church from

Glarus. They farmed until their retirement in 1962, when they moved to New

1950, when he moved to Mount Pleasant and farmed on the home farm. He was a
