Marie Ellen Kerby Wrzesinski
Marie Ellen Kerby Wrzesinski, a former resident of Benzie County, Manistee, and for the past year, Mount Pleasant, died Thursday afternoon at her daughter's residence at the age of 79.
Marie was born on Feb. 28, 1920 in Barryton, Mich., the daughter of Lawrence A. and Florence E. (Braley) of Lassen. She was united in marriage to Edwin W. Kerby on March 15, 1936. Edwin died Oct. 17, 1975. She was then united in marriage to Clarence Wrzesinski in July of 1977, Clarence passed away in February of 1999. She was also preceded in death by a son Thomas Arner Kerby, and three grandchildren.
For many years, Marie owned and operated adult foster care homes in the Benzie County area. She was always known to lend a helping hand to others when they may have needed assistance. Marie enjoyed canning, crafts, cooking and sewing. While residing in Benzie County, she attended the Benzie Area Church of Christ.
Marie is survived by sons, Eugene (Beth) Kerby of Beulah, Frederick (Dorothy) Kerby of Benzonia, Wayne Kerby of Mount Pleasant, and step-son, Thomas (Charlotte) Lewis of Empire; daughter-in-law, Connie Kerby of Saint John; seven daughters, Darlene (Bryce) Gray of Honor, Shirley (Marvin) Young of Mount Pleasant, Barbara (Larry) West of Empire, Maria (Jack) Shippey of Saint Johns, Debra (Dennis) Kietzman of Jackson, Cheryl (Kenneth) Carpenter of Jackson, and Kimberly (Scott) Mead of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are two brothers, Loren Bixby of Fruitport, Dewey Lassen of Oklahoma, three sisters, Gladys Brown of Flint, Judy McCummins of Pickford, Althea Bowen of Mount Pleasant, 48 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.
Services for Marie will be held on Monday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. from the Benzie Area Church of Christ. Evangelist, Robert Bodell, will officiate. Burial will take place in the Gilmore Township Cemetery. Velma Marie Butler
Velma Marie Butler, 84, of Berrien Springs, formerly of Manistee, died Sunday morning, Nov. 28, 1999.
She was born Aug. 31, 1915 in Wakefield, the daughter of Waino and Mary Luoma. On July 3, 1943, she married Everett Butler in Elberta. For many years, Velma taught high school Latin, French and English, in addition to being a school librarian.
She is survived by her husband, Everett; her children: David (Nancy) Butler of Manistee, Brian (Judy) Butler of Boyertown, Pa., Martin (Lisa) Butler of Apopka, Fla., Jon (Sari) Butler of Berrien Springs, and Joanne (Mike) Gilkey of Dunwoody, Ga.; her grandchildren: Glendon, Rachel, Ryan, Monika, Lindsey, Brandon, Ashley, Mike and Matt. She is also survived by sisters Gertrude Mayry and Adele Campbell, brothers Carl (Josie), Alvin (Mary Lou), Harold (Jo) and David (Nancy) Luoma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Irene Koski, and a brother, Tauno Luoma. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 30, in the chapel at Pioneer Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church in Berrien Springs. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Berrien Springs.

Donald Nelson
Donald Nelson, 79, of 59 Smith St., Manistee, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999 at West Shore Hospital in Manistee.
Don was born Feb. 8, 1920 in Manistee, the son of George and Maude (Nelson) Musculus. He graduated from Manistee High School, Class of 1937.
Don was a painter for over 60 years in the Manistee area. He had worked for Manistee Paint Company for several years and was an independent contractor for many years after that. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, Painters Local Union 1803. He had been a member of Painters Local 1408 in Manistee where he had served as the secretary/treasurer for over 50 years prior to the closing of that local.
Don was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Manistee. He was also a member of the Manistee Lodge No. 228, F&AM, and many other masonic bodies, including the Shrine. Don was always an avid Manistee High School Chippewa sports fan. He and Marijane attended every sporting event for many years in and out of town. He was especially interested in the development of the girls basketball teams.
He is survived by: his lifelong companion, Marijane Daniels; his half-brother and spouse, George and Rosemary Musculus of Manistee; three nephews; numerous cousins; and his dog, Little One. Don was always deeply grateful for his many wonderful friends.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at the First Congregational UCC church in Manistee, with the Rev. Sally Schreiner officiating. Final interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted by Manistee Chapter No. 228, F&AM at the church following the church service.

Sulo Werner Lahti
Sulo Werner Lahti, 87, of Kaleva, died Saturday, December 4, 1999 at the Manistee Heights Care Center in Manistee.
He was born February 13, 1912, in Ontonogan, son of John Oscar and Ida (Jamsaa) Lahti.
Sulo was employed by Great Lakes Steel in Ecorse, until his retirement in 1971. After retiring, he moved to Kaleva where he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and snowmobiler. Sulo and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed traveling across the country with their camper or motor home.
Surviving are: his children, Raymond S. (Lillian) Lahti, of Rochester Hills, and Carol (Don) Foth, of Cortez, Colorado; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Martha S. Lakala of Troy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sulo was preceded in death by: his wife, Nancy A. (Paatalo) Lahti in 190; his brothers, Victor O. Lahti and Emil J. Lahti; his brother, Walfred Lahti during childhood; and two sisters, Sylvia Lahti and Ellen O. Karling.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at the Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, with Rev. Kenneth H. Lein officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Township Cemetery . Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of services on Tuesday, at the funeral Home.

Sylvia L. Groves
Sylvia L. Groves, 94, of Manistee died Saturday morning, December 4, 1999 at West Shore Hospital.
She was born October 17, 1905 in Manistee, the daughter of the late Gust and Amanda (Strand) Swanson. She married Aloysius F. Groves in Manistee on June 1, 1927. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1973.
She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Manistee and had been active in bible study groups and ladies circles of the church. She also loved playing bridge and spending time with her family.
She is survived by: her son, Harvey Groves of Holt, a grandson, Bradley Groves also of Holt; a sister, Alice Stevens of Buckley and by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Donald in 1979 and by sisters, Verna Kruse, Audrey Send and Goldie Duschinske.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas MaGinn officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Friends may begin calling at the Johnson Funeral Home Monday afternoon, where the family will receive friends from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m.

Gary Clement Young
Gary Clement Young, 64, of Kaleva, formerly of Detroit, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility in Manistee.
He was born July 29, 1935, in Detroit, the son of John and Mabel (Wirtz) Young.
Gary was a design engineer at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, for 40 years, retiring in 1992. After retiring, Gary and his wife, Joanne, moved to Kaleva. He served in the Air National Guard, and was a member of the Kaleva Baptist Church.
On November 14, 1953, in Detroit, he married Joanne Wanhala, who survives him. Also surviving are: his children, Rick Young of Utah, Linda Szanto of Kaleva, Lisa (Robert) Sidor of Bear Lake, Keith (Kathy) Young of belmont, Timothy Young of Garden City, and Lorraine (Dan) Bever of Ohio; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Sharon Hamming of Manchester.
Gary was preceded in death by: his parents, John and Mabel Wirtz; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Helen and Edwin Wanhala; and two great-grandchildren, Erica Mills and Jeremy Mills.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 at the Terwilliger Funeral home in Kaleva, with Pastor David Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. this evening (Monday) at the Terwilliger Funeral Home. 

Iva E. Hunt
Iva E. Hunt, 81, of Bear Lake, entered into her eternal reward with Jesus, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
Iva was born June 11, 1918 in Blaine Township, Benzie County, the daughter of Ernest and Ethel (Shutler) Gilbert. On June 7, 1938 she married John H. Hunt, who preceded her in death on June 9, 1990. She graduated from Ferris Institute and taught elementary school in Almira Township of Benzie County.
Iva and John resided on the family farm at Herring Lake for many years where she was a loving mother and homemaker, who enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family. In 1966, the family moved to Bear Lake to own and operate a dairy farm. Iva worked as a cook and baker at the Bear Lake schools for many years, retiring about 1977. She was a charter member of the Herring Lake Baptist Church where she served in a variety of ministries over the years.
Surviving are: two sons, Rodney (Betty) Hunt of Herring Lake and Charles (Debra) Hunt of Traverse City; nine grandchildren, Pam Hyde of Minneapolis, Minn., Kirk (Lisa) Hunt of Eaton Rapids, Eric (Kario) Hunt of Ann Arbor, Brian (Michele) Hunt of Spring Lake, Rebecca Waller of Palm Harbor, Fla., Jonathan and Courtney Hunt of Maine and Hillary and Marta Hunt of Traverse City; seven great-grandchildren, Steffon Hunt, Raechel, Mellissa and Kenneth Hyde, Lindsay and Kirsten Hunt, and Randy Waller; one sister, Pearle (Ted) Schlueter of Cedar; and brothers, Stephen Gilbert of Tucscon, Ariz., and Beuford (Marion) Gilbert of Cook, Neb. Also, her best friend, Leona Bronson of Bear Lake.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Jon Hunt in 1997; and brothers, Harry and Cleve Gilbert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15 at the Herring Lake Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Blaine Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Edwards Funeral Home of Bear Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

John F. (Jack) Raczkowski
John F. (Jack) Raczkowski, age 88, of 248 Ninth St., Manistee, died early Monday morning, Dec. 13, 1999 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. He was born August 22, 1911 in Manistee, and was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Kiestrzynski) Raczkowski. John married Sarah M. Holowinski on November 16, 1935 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. They celebrated over 64 years of marriage this year. John had been employed with the Morton Salt Company of Manistee for over 30 years retiring in 1973. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Manistee. He was an avid fisherman and loved to fish off the Manistee piers.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sarah M. Raczkowski of Manistee; his niece and her husband, Leanne and Gerald Pieczynski of Manistee; his great niece, Jean Pieczynski Hogan of Manistee; and his three great-great nephews, Nathan, Nicholas and Casey Hogan, all of Manistee. Numerous nieces and nephews from the Holowinski side of the family also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Theodore and Belle Raskey; and by his sister and brother-in-law, Susan A. and Everett McCain.
Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee, with the Rev. William Zwiefka, celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, also in Manistee.

Irwin W. Colby, age 96, of Chief Lake, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 12, 1999 at Spectrum Health East, Burn Unit in Grand Rapids. There will be no visitation or services.

Arthur C. Carpenter
Arthur Carl Carpenter, 61, of Battle Creek died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at home.
He was born May 17, 1938, in Union City to Carl E. and Janet E. (Ross) Carpenter.
He graduated from Union City High School in 1956, attended Kellogg Community College and Case Western Reserve University and attended U.S. Secret Service Questioned Document Courses.
He retired as a detective on July 1, 1994, after 33 years with the Battle Creek Police Department. He then worked part-time as a driver for Henkel Dodge.
He married Elma E. Wasnieski on Aug. 25, 1957, in Union City. She survives.
Also surviving are: sons, C. Dean Carpenter of Athens, and Martin L. Carpenter of Wyoming; two grandsons; mother and step-father, Janet and Gail Dipert of Wellston; and sisters, Carla D. Lewis of Nashville, Janice A. Mangold of Athens and Nancy L. Robinson of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his father on Oct. 7, 1972; and an infant daughter in July 1958.
Arthur was a member and past president of Calhoun County Lodge 121 Fraternal Order of Police; Battle Creek Police Officers 25-Year Club and Retired Police Officer's group and a past Cub Master of Verona School Cub Scout Pack. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, spending time at his cabin and wood splitting weekends every October at Mr. C's Place in Wellston.
Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Friday at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Union City.
Memorials may be made to Union City High School Alumni Scholarship fund or a charity of one's choice. 

Harry J. Dahlke
Harry J. Dahlke, age 91, of 1332 East Twenty-Eighth St., Manistee, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999 in Stronach Township, unexpectedly. He was born September 18, 1908 in Manistee, the son of the late Leon and Rose (Jankowski) Dalka. Harry married Gertrude Kolanowski on June 25, 1934 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. She preceded him in death on March 9, 1987. Harry at one time was the Justice of the Peace for Filer Township. He had been employed at Hardy Salt Company of Manistee, for 37 years, until his retirement in 1970. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Manistee and a member of the St. Joseph Civic Club, also in Manistee.
Two sisters survive Harry: Florence Schaffert of Berwyn, Ill., and Genevieve Kane of Ludington. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.
Two infant brothers, Carl and Edwin Dalka also preceded Harry in death.
Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee, with the Rev. James Bearss celebrant. Burial will take place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.

Beatrice M. Bobian
Beatrice M. Bobian, 81, of 380 Eighth St., Manistee, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999 at West Shore Hospital.
She was born May 18, 1918 in Plainfield, N.J., the daughter of Gustav and Georgian (Thomas) Eyring. She married Artin G. Bobian on April 21, 1945 in Plainfield, N.J. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1989.
She is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard and Amy Bobian of Bear Lake; daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Dennis Hoxsie of Williamsburg and Jane and Bob Sievert of Manistee; grandchildren, Elise and Michael Bobian, Libby and Scott Schultz of San Diego, Calif., and Ali Hoxsie of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, Arthur Eyring of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by: her parents; and a brother, James Eyring.
Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Rev. Fr. Joseph Pawlicki
Rev. Fr. Joseph Pawlicki, CSC, 84, of Coachella, Calif., formerly of Manistee, died in Coachella on Monday, Dec. 13, 1999.
He was born July 31, 1915 in Manistee, the son of Frank and Anna (Jurkowski) Pawlicki.
Father Pawlicki attended Guardian Angels Catholic School, Manistee High School, and Notre Dame University. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1950.
A member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, he served in various teaching and missionary capacities in Portland, Ore., Santiago, Chile, Austin, Texas and Coachella Valley, Calif. He served primarily in ministry to Hispanics. He was founder of and director for 28 years of a religious and cultural center in Coachella.
He is survived by; his sister, Harriet Best of Grand Haven; and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Emery.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Basilica on the campus of Notre Dame University on Monday, Dec. 20. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery, also on the university campus. 

Germaine Marie Guenthardt
Germaine Marie Guenthardt, age 74, of 244 Tenth St., Manistee, joined her beloved husband, Carl (Cappy) Guenthardt in heaven on Friday morning, Dec. 17, 1999.
She was born on March 30, 1925 in Manistee, the daughter of the late Edward F. and Anna P. (Paczesny) Cabot. She attended Saint Joseph Catholic Church School in Manistee. Germaine married Carl (Cappy) Guenthardt on October 30, 1948 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1977.
She had worked along with her sisters at the Salt City Tavern in Manistee.
A communicant of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee, Germaine greatly enjoyed being a wife, mother, and homemaker. She was also a member of the VFW Walsh Post No. 4499 Auxiliary.
She is survived by: One son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Cecilia Guenthardt of Manistee; grandsons, Tim and Dale Guenthardt; step-grandchildren, Janine, Mikaleen, and Martin Gregorski. Germaine was also "Great Grandma Honey" to Tyler, Aubree, Trey and Ivy Gregorski. One brother and sister-in-law survive, Rex and Sally Cabot of Manistee. Also, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Grace Larson, Genevieve M. Cabot, Jean Guenthardt, Bob and Christie Madsen, all of Manistee; Jerome Niemiec of Ludington, and Thelma Guenthardt of Wellston; one cousin, Esther Lassa of Manistee. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was also preceded in death by: three sisters, Eleanor Cabot, Phyllis Niemiec, and Virginia Bengtsson; and by two brothers, Harry and Frank (Jim) Cabot.

Peter M. Nezki
Peter M. Nezki, age 53, of Grand Rapids, Mich., formerly of Manistee, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at his home in Grand Rapids unexpectedly. He was born March 22, 1946 in Dodgeville, Wisc. and was the son of the late Stanley and Mary (Torgeson) Nezki. He had served in the Vietnam War. Peter moved to Manistee in 1969 to work at WMTE and WRRK Radio Station, after graduating from the Milwaukee Broadcasting School. He was a morning disc jockey, as well as being the sports broadcaster for the local area football and basketball games. He had been involved in coaching little league, softball, flag football and soccer for the MRA. He was active in many community activities and organizations, including the Jaycees and as a past president of the Manistee Chamber of Commerce. Pete was also a recipient of the Charles Schoedel Outstanding Citizens Award. He had also been the owner and manager of WRQT Radio Station in Bear Lake.
He is survived by his daughter Troice Nezki of Detroit, Mich.; his son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Mary Nezki of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; two grandsons, Zachary and Jakob Nezki both of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; his sister Eleanor Montgomery of Madison, Wisc.; and his nieces and nephews, Shawn, Kelly, Mary and Martha.
A memorial mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee with Rev. William Zwiefka celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 10 a.m.

George Francis "Whitey" Schester
George Francis "Whitey" Schester, 70, of Kaleva, formerly of Hazel Park, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999 at his residence.
He was born March 16, 1929 in Detroit, the son of John Joseph and Clara (Schnorack) Schester Sr.
George was a member of the Glazers Union Local No. 357 in Troy, working as a glazier for over 25 years; and was a 30-year member of the Eagles Lodge No. 2449 in Hazel Park. In 1994, George and his wife, Dolores moved to Kaleva.
He is survived by: his wife, Dolores "Dodo" Schester of Kaleva; his children, George Paul (Carol) Schester of Madison Heights, Deborah (Glenn) Peters of Hazel Park, Kathleen McCormick of Hazel Park, David (Chris Olen) Schester of Manistee, Keith (Karen) Schester of Kaleva, Colleen (Paul) Holland of Royal Oak, and Melanie (Marty) Peterson of Clawson; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Shack of St. Helens and Mary Ann (Don) Gipperich of Warren.
George was preceded in death by: his parents; his sister, Virginia Klamik; his brother, John Schester Jr.; and two granddaughters, Christine Schester and Holly McCormick.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Hopcroft Funeral Home, 23919 John R, Hazel Park. Interment will be in Christian Memorial Cultural Center in Rochester Hills. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Hopcroft Funeral Home.

Ingeborg T. "Inky" Hayes
Ingeborg T. "Inky" Hayes, 81, of 24 Caberfae Hwy., Manistee, died Thursday evening, Dec. 23, 1999 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
She was born July 27, 1918 in North Dakota, the daughter of the late Carl and Ingeborg (Tandborg) Nelson. She married Robert Hayes in Grand Haven in September of 1962.
She was retired, having been a clerk for the Gwen Frostic Prints in Benzonia. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Onekama.
She is survived by: her husband, Robert; sons and daughters-in-law, Barney and Bobbie Ware of Holland, Norman and Sandy Ware, Robert and Phyllis Hayes, and Donald and Pam Hayes, all of Manistee, and Leroy and Jill Hayes of Lake Ann; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Jack Fredricks of New Port Richie, Fla., Caroline and Jerome Patulski of Eastlake and Susan and Daryl Cunnington of Traverse City; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Donald L. Ware, in 1989.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at the Johnson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Pollatz officiating. Final interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 12 p.m. until the time of services.
The family suggests that those wanting to remember Inky consider a contribution to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Onekama. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
