Lewis Marion Gregg, 63, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2002, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral Services for Lewis will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 7th, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Eugene Methner officiating. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, February 6th, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday, February 7th, from 11 a.m. until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Lewis was born on November 24, 1938, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of George and Crystal (Slocum) Gregg. He married Veronica “Ronnie” Taylor on March 24, 1962. Lewis was employed as a baker for the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center (State Home). He loved playing bingo and listening to sports.

Lewis is survived by his wife Ronnie Gregg; his children, Ken Gregg, Tracey Kortman (Darrin), Vickie Gregg, and Donna Bookey (Stuart), all of Mt. Pleasant; 8 grandchildren, Cody, Forrest and Krista, Kyle, Kelly and Kirk, Mike and Kim; his parents, George and Crystal Gregg of Summerfield, FL; his father-in-law Lewis Taylor of Mt. Pleasant; his 2 brothers, Lloyd Gregg (Lee) of Mt. Pleasant, Lyndon Gregg (Debbie) of Beaver City, NB; and his sister Norma Jean Krauss (Glen) of Summerfield, FL.

Frear, Daphne Schaub
January 15, 1922 - January 31, 2002

Daphne S. Frear, 80, of Coldwater Lake, Weidman, died Thursday, January 31st, 2002 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing.

A Memorial Service for Daphne will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at St John’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Patricia Green officiating. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service.

The family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to an organization of your choice in lieu of flowers.

Mrs. Frear was born January 15, 1922 in Oconto Falls, WI to Benson and Mary (Johnson) Schaub. She married Scott E. Frear on December 23rd, 1960, in Evanston, IL. Mrs. Frear was an area resident since September 1964.

Mrs. Frear was member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs- Mt. Pleasant and the Central Michigan University Dames.

Daphne received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Wisconsin; was a graduate of the Dietetic Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital; and took graduate work at the University of Maryland. She was a Registered Dietitian with membership in the American Dietetic Association.

Mrs. Frear was Director of Food Services at Pennsylvania College for Women and at MacMurray College for Women (IL) besides being an Assistant Director of Dormitories at Lawrence College in WI. In later years she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Central Michigan University. For a brief period she was a consultant at the Mt. Pleasant Center and an administrative dietitian at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth and one brother, Arthur (Dellola).

Daphne was preceded in death by her husband, Scott E. Frear, her parents, two sisters, Mary and Helen and two brothers, James and David.

Woodbury, James J.
December 17, 1926 - January 28, 2002

James J. Woodbury, 75, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Monday, January 28th , 2002 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral service for James will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31st, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Bradshaw officiating. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, January 30th , from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Cancer Services or Friends of Isabella Seniors. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

James was born on December 17, 1926 in Isabella County, the son of William and Rose (Ludwig) Woodbury. He married Doris Towersey on April 28, 1989. He owned and operated Jim’s Auto Repair from 1959 to 1992, when he semi-retired. Jim enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and gardening.

James is survived by his wife, Doris; ten children, Marilyn Loomis of Essexville, Michael (Gin) Woodbury of Mt. Pleasant, Patrick Woodbury of Sanford Lake, Vicky (Michael) Joyce of Clare, Terry (Markie)Woodbury of Mt. Pleasant, Sherry Woodbury of Mt. Pleasant, Daniel (Debra) Woodbury of Mt. Pleasant, Jeffrey (Patty) Woodbury of Mt. Pleasant, Jamie (Bruce) Sirmans of Traverse City and Jodi Woodbury of Lansing; twenty two grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; four step children, Linda (Kim) Kresnak of Elwell, Jeffrey Cline of Elwell, Douglas Cline of Breckenridge, and Alan (Jessica) Cline of Farwell; 12 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Wood of Mt. Pleasant, Rosie Ohms of Mt. Pleasant, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Betty Spangler.

James is preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Lewis Woodbury, Alfred Woodbury, Robert Woodbury, Harry Woodbury, William J. Woodbury, Joseph Woodbury and Edwin Woodbury; one sister, Libbie N. Riggle, two grandchildren and two brothers in law, Albert Wood and Lon Ohms.

Leon Bunker, 66, of Rosebush, passed away on Sunday, January 27th , 2002 in Parker, Arizona.

A Funeral Service for Leon will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1st, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Benton Heisler officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Leon was born on March 12, 1935 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Faula Charles and Mabel Mae (Bundy) Bunker. Leon married Markeith Anne Moses on November 5, 1955. Leon lived most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant area. He was employed at Michigan Consolidated Gas as a reservoir engineer from 1964 to 1989. Leon enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Leon is survived by his wife, Markeith; three children, Gary (Claire) Bunker of Rosebush, Darla (Ken) Cooley of Big Rapids, and Gregg (Tracey) Bunker of Stanwood; five grandchildren, Rebecca Bunker, Kirk and Jack Bunker, and Joshua and Jacob Cooley. He is also survived by one brother, Don (Winifred) Bunker of Mt. Pleasant.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, A.J. and Charles and two sisters, Margene McDonald and Dorothy Howay.

Guyse, Charles Clifton

Charles Clifton Guyse, 88, of Escondido, CA, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Saturday, January 26th, 2002.

Funeral services for Charles will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, at the Manuel Funeral Home in North Liberty, IN. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1st. Please contact the funeral home for visiting hours at (219) 656-8362.

Charles was born on April 2, 1913, in North Liberty, IN, the som of Clifton and Rosa (Ort) Guyse. He married Ethel Lamphear on October 16, 1938.
Charles was in the Army from 1929 to 1932. He worked as a plumber for 60 years, seventeen of that in Local 172.

Charles is survived by two children, Duane (Connie) Guyse of California and Rebecca (Wayne) Boughan of Remus. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joseph Guyse, Jeffrey Guyse, Genvieve Carter and Matthew Boughan, two great-grandchildren Charlie Carter and Victoria Guyse and one sister, Lois Baum of Indiana.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Guyse, and his son, Charles Guyse Jr.

Bollman, Robert F.

Robert F. Bollman, 75, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2002 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A Funeral Mass for Robert will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23rd, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, January 22nd , from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Athletic Association or the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the church and the funeral chapel.

Robert was born on August 7, 1926, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Sheahan) Bollman. He married Frances Gostola on August 31, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He worked as a dairy farmer all of his life. Robert was a member of Sacred Heart. He loved to hunt and watch sports.

Robert is survived by his wife, Frances; three sons, Ronald (Vera) Bollman of Mt. Pleasant, Daniel Bollman of Canadian Lakes, and Michael (Patricia) Bollman of New Orleans, LA.; five grandchildren, Brook (Ed) Shumacher, Angie Bollman and fiancé, Jared Pifer, Patrick Bollman, Mary Kate Bollman and Kelsey Bollman. He is also survived by one brother, Thomas Bollman of Mt. Pleasant and one sister, Helen Bollman Carter of Eight Point Lake.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Kenneth Bollman, Donald Bollman and William Bollman.

Chapis, John
April 10, 1937 - January 16, 2002

John “Jack” L. Chapis, 64, of Lake Isabella, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2002.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a Memorial Service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at Central Michigan Christian Church with Rev. Daniel Siedlecki officiating.

Those wishing to make a memorial donation in memory of Jack may consider the Red Cross. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Jack was born in Missouri on April 10, 1937. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences from Southeast Missouri State and received his Master’s of Social Work Degree in Community Development from Washington University. In August of 1972 Jack joined the faculty at Central Michigan University, teaching in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work in the College of Humanities & Social & Behavioral Studies. Jack served as the Advisor of the Student Social Work Association for many years. He won “Advisor of the Year” award for his outstanding work with SSWA. Jack was always willing to help anyone, at any time, in spite of his busy schedule. Jack brought much to the University and will be sorely missed.

Jack is survived by his son, Douglas P. (Krista) Chapis of Manchester, MO, one brother, Dennis Chapis of Tucson, AZ and one half brother, Ron Cole of Florida.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents.

Catherine M. Evola, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Sunday, January 13th, 2002, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A funeral service for Catherine will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16th, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Father Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Catherine was born on November 15th, 1932, in Boston, MA, the daughter of Franceso and Laura (Cicurella) Tumbiolo. She married Natale S. Evola of Sicily, Italy on April 16, 1955. She worked as a homemaker and cared for their five children. Catherine was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant, MI. She enjoyed Italian cooking and baking and sharing it with her family and grandchildren.

Catherine is survived by her husband, Natale; their five children, Cathy (Denny) Callison of Coleman, Phil (Katherine Evola of M. Pleasant, Laura (Steve) Mendez of Lafayette CO, Natalie (Randy) Souder of Mt. Pleasant, Fran (Jeff) Ervin of Belleville, MI; ten grandchildren; her two brothers, Matthew (Mary Ann) Tumbiolo of Gloucester, MA, Joseph Tumbiolo also of MA and one sister, Jennie (Steven) Fvocillo of Revere, MA.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mary Ciaramataro.

Mildred Lenore Duffy, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at Tendercare.

Funeral Mass for Mildred will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will take place in St. Leo’s Cemetery in Winn. The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Thursday December 27th from 7 – 9 p.m. and on Friday December 28th from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. , there will be visitation at the Church from 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday. A vigil service will be held Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Mildred was born on May 8, 1919, in Isabella County, the daughter of Clyde and Anna (Walton) Emery. She married Philip T. Duffy Jr.. He preceded her in death in 1959. She retired from the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center after many years of service. Mildred was a member of S.E.R.A. and the Womans Auxillary for the American Legion.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Sandy (Tony) Schafer of Mt. Pleasant, five grandchildren; Leah (James) VanEeckhoutte, Philip (Wendy) Schafer, Alan “Scott”(Melody) Schafer, Patricia Schafer, Frank Schafer and his fiancé, Erin Spayd, and eleven great-grandchildren, Shannon, Samantha, Spencer, Sage, Scott, Syvana, Taylor, Kennedy, Toni, Nikki and Jessica. Mildred is also survived by her brother Duane (Kathy) Emery of Mt. Pleasant, and one sister, Janet Bauer of New Baltimore, MI.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Duffy, both parents, two sisters, Wilma and Aileen, two brothers, Buddy and Lyle and her special friend, Wally Cole.

A Funeral Mass for Agnes will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 27th, at Sacred Heart Church. Agnes will be buried alongside Myron, her husband of 46 years, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul. The family will receive friends at Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, December 27th, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Agnes was born on June 7, 1909, in St. Paul, the daughter of Frank and Mary Gorgos. Before her marriage to Myron McLean on October 15, 1938, Agnes was employed as a telephone operator and as a bookkeeper and cashier for theatres in St. Paul. She was a member of the Guild of Catholic Women in St. Paul, as well as a member of the Red Cross during WWII. Agnes gave many years of service to St. Jerome’s Parish and School in St. Paul.

Agnes is survived by her daughter Susan and her husband Jim McGrath and her son Tom and his wife Athena and their children Thea and Trevor; and nieces and nephews, including Barbara Keenan of St. Paul.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Myron; her brothers Michael, Frank, and Joseph Gorgos; and her sisters Ann Nelson and Mary Garrity.

Evelyn Marie Bennett, 76, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2001, at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility.

A Funeral Mass for Evelyn will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 24th, at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Sunday, December 23rd, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and at the church on Monday, December 24th, from 10 a.m. until the time of service. There will be a prayer service on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Evelyn was born on August 29, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Lewis and Imo (McNeal) Jourdain. Evelyn was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. She married Vernon Bennett on May 24, 1962, in Cadillac, Michigan. Vernon preceded Evelyn in death in 1979. Evelyn enjoyed working in the medical field helping others attain physical wellness. She worked for Dr. McGinnis for 25 years as his assistant and then worked for Dr. S. J. Carson as his office manager for 27 years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Catholic Daughters, and the Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge. Evelyn enjoyed picking wild mushrooms near Lealand south lake area. She also enjoyed fishing pan fish with her mother on Lake Leelanau. Evelyn loved people, and especially her dogs and cats. She also had done some painting and crafts.

Evelyn is survived by her step-children, Nellie and Robert Hales of Sheridan, IN, Jack and Andrea Bennett of Cadillac, Larry Bennett of Chesaning, and Vergiline and Eugene Willett of Lennon; 17 step-grandchildren; 30 great-step-grandchildren; brother-in-law Charles and Marie Bennett of Beaverton; nieces and nephews Bob and Sue Moeller and Barb and Bill Fielding; and special friend Kenneth Ege of Mt. Pleasant.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband and her sister Lois Moeller.

John Edward Moss, 70, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, December 18th , 2001, at his home.

Interment will take place in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. John was born on August 21, 1931, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Kenneth F. and Glenore (Ball) Moss. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1949. John served in the Army. He married Martha Dolores McLachlin on April 27, 1952. He worked for Dow Chemical for 34 years as a boiler operator, retiring in 1990, and farmed. John enjoyed fishing, farming, watching things grow, his grandchildren and visiting with people.

John is survived by his wife, Dolores, three children, Kenneth (Mary) Moss of Mt. Pleasant, Lynda Castonguay of Raliegh, NC, and Scott (Lorinda) Moss of Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Mindy Bradshaw, Angie Moss, Emily Moss, Amy Moss, Kyle Moss, Magella Castonguay, Erika Moss and Laurel Moss. He is also survived by one sister in law, Jean Moss of Mt. Pleasant and three sisters, Kenna Jean (Ron) Buzzell of Gladwin, Nancy Hovey of Mt. Pleasant and Mary (Denver) Harless of Holt, MI.

John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George Moss.

Mary E. Brace, 97, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 5, at 1 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Benton Heisler officiating.

The family will meet with friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider Veterans' Memorial Library or First United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel or the church.

Mary was born August 7, 1904, in Moline, KS, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Richardson) Shupp. She graduated from Moline High School and attended Emporia State Teacher's College. After teaching two years in a one-room school, she married Paul H. Brace.

Mary and Paul moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1940. After Paul's death in 1952, Mary was employed at the State Home as an attendant nurse until retirement in 1969. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Friends of the Library, Michigan State Retirees, and the Eastern Star.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth A. Holmes of Traverse City, Enola J. Armstrong, and Dixie L. Neier of Mt. Pleasant; sisters-in-law, Bea McDonald of Astor, FL, and Inez Shupp of Denver, CO; eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Ruth Warren, brother Harry Shupp, and sons-in-law, Harry John Holmes and Richard L. Neier. 
Foster, Jean Marie

Jean Marie Foster, 54, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral services for Jean will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 13th, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Deacon Larry Fussman officiating. Interment will take place in Coomer Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, December 12th, from 3-9 p.m.

Jean was born on March 15, 1947, in Detroit, the daughter of John and Orielda (Schafer) Farner. She worked for 28 years for the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center as a nursing aide, retiring in 1997. Jean anxiously anticipated the birth of her grandchild in May to daughter Laureen (Doug) Crowley.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Penny Seymour of Elkhart, IN, Laureen (Doug) Crowley of Shepherd, Peggy (Gary) Germain of Mt. Pleasant, and Diana Gluch of Weidman and son Roger (Jean) Pitts of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren Brandon James, Trevor Sidney, Jakeb Glen Seymour of Elkart, IN, Jennifer Gluch of Mt. Pleasant; Angela Gluch of St. Louis, and Keith Allen Germain of Mt. Pleasant; her birth mother Mary (Herb) Chapman of South Bend, IN; her brothers William Chapman of Dowagiac, Lawarence Chapman of South Bend, IN; Richard Chapman Granger, IN, Joseph Chapman of Dowagiac, James Chapman of Dowagiac, Michael Chapman of South Bend, and Robert Chapman of Dowagiac; brother Richard Farner of Mt. Audrey Olive Haught, 87, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2001 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility.

Audrey was born October 18, 1914 in Fairview, West Virginia to William and Mary (Fluharty) Engle. She married James Haught on October 19, 1935 in West Virginia. He preceded her in death in 1973. Audrey worked in their home taking care of their two children. She was a member of the Chippewa Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting.

Audrey is survived by her children, Mary (Gene) Ohms and James (Becky) Haught, both of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Julie Ohms, Joseph Ohms, John Haught, and Andrew Harless. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Colleen Haught of Alger, MI, Virginia Haught of Fairview, WV, Agie Danielson of Lexington, MI and Olive Tennant of Fairview, WV.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, James, one daughter, Nancy Haught, one brother, John Engle and one sister, Nellie Toothman. 
Massey, Cecil Wayne
March 30, 1953 - December 10, 2001

Cecil Wayne Massey, 48, of Weidman passed away on Monday, December 10, 2001 at Mid Michigan Medical Center in Midland.

Funeral services for Cecil will be held on Thursday, December 13th at 11 a.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. George Straus officiating. Cremation will follow ceremony.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, December 13th from
3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Cecil was born March 30, 1953 in Humble, TX to Joe and Annie (Cochren) Massey. He married Marie Straus in 1985. Cecil worked as the Distribution Manager for the Morning Sun. He enjoyed hunting and fishing but mostly being a father and attending his sons sporting events. 

Cecil is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons, Jerry Massey and Joe Cecil Massey, both of Weidman; and his father, Joe Cecil of Spring TX and his mother, Annie Ruth Storm of Porter, IN. He is also survived by two brothers, Jack Massey of Spring TX and Jimmy Newsome of Houston, TX and six sisters, Joyce Bierman, Joann Bierman, Belinda Wood all of Spring, TX, Brenda Crump of Corning, AK, Becky Adcock of LA and Elaine Vann of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his special Grandma and Grandpa Schuchardt; his step-mother Viola Massey; father-in-law Gerald Straus; and brother-in-law Tony Straus.
