Joseph Michael Burch, 60, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at his residence in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Funeral Mass for Joseph Burch will be held on Thursday, March 29th, at 11 a.m. fromSt. Henry’s Catholic Church in Rosebush. Father Jeffrey Donner and Sister Mary Ellen McDonald will co-officiate with interment to take place at St. Henry’s Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, March 28th, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. A vigil service will be held Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the A.L.S. Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Joe was born November 25, 1940, in Delwin, Michigan to Frederick and Mary (Lane) Burch. Joseph worked as an independent truck driver and an owner operator. He also drove for the construction business for 27 years.

Joe is survived by his children, Jack Burch (Marsha) of Mt. Pleasant, Joseph Burch II (Sheila) of Rosebush, and Delbert Burch of Mt. Pleasant, his five grandchildren; Heather, Brett, Dustin, Joe III, and Jennifer, his brothers; Pat Burch (Dorothy) of Coleman, Jim Burch (Maxine) of Midland, Ken Burch (Joan) of Mt. Pleasant, and his sisters; Mary Sharp, Julia Hovey, Rosie Sponseller (Lee), and Florence Schultz of Mt. Pleasant, Bonnie Mogg (Murray), Helen Horan and Donna Lynch (Terry) of Rosebush, and Suzann Moeggenberg (George) of Ft. Myers, Florida.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters; Lucille Mogg, Martha Prout, Irene Evans and two infant siblings.

McElhaney, Charles Joseph
August 28, 1922 - March 20, 2001

Charles Joseph McElhaney, 77, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

A funeral mass for Charles will be held on Saturday, March 24th, at 11 a.m. from
St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Rosebush. Father Jeffrey Donner and Sister Mary Ellen McDonald will co-officiate with interment to take place at St. Henry’s Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Friday, March 23rd, from 7-9 p.m. There will be a prayer service Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Charles McElhaney. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Charles was born August 28, 1922, in Isabella County to John and Catherine (Mitchell) McElhaney. Charles married Dorothy (Prell) McElhaney November 27, 1983. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1995. Charles worked as a contractor and also drove truck for many years. Charles was also a volunteer at the Mt. Pleasant Soup Kitchen and enjoyed going there for meals.

Charles is survived by his step-sons, Kevin Prell and Tom Demoines of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Margaret Boese of South Dakota; a special friend, June Davis of Mt. Pleasant; a God-daughter, Dawn Ash of Mt. Pleasant and many nieces, nephews and special friends. Charles also is survived by his special pets, Mindy and Peggy Sue.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and five sisters, Mary Ellen Faber, Catherine LeRoy, Isabella Thomas, Cecilia Bailey and Loretta Woodin.

William Reading Heinlein, 71, of Winn passed away on Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Tender Care Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Funeral services for William will be held on Monday, March 19th, at 11 a.m. from
Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton will officiate with interment to take place in Union Cemetery, Isabella Co., Michigan.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 17th and Sunday, March 18th from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Bill was born May 6, 1929, in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, the son of Lemuel McKinley Heinlein and Phyllis Rosalee (Spurrier) Heinlein. Bill worked as a meat cutter at the Winn Market. He also had worked as a truck driver for Tice Beverage. Bill enjoyed gardening and caring for his flower beds.

Bill is survived by his children, Dianna (Dale) Webster of Shepherd, Michigan, and Dennis Heinlein of Bay City, Michigan; five grandchildren, Greg, Gina, Lucy, Lacy and Daniel; six great-grandchildren, Phillip, Jamie, Gabrielle, Cody, Brea and Bailey; five sisters, Betty Poling of Lancaster, Ohio, Marjorie (Donald) Dickey of Clare, Michigan, Joann Bellinger of Mt. Pleasant, Carol (David) Browne of Mt. Pleasant and Sandra (Robert) Shufelt of Shepherd, Michigan; and one brother, Robert (Barbara) Heinlein of Mt. Pleasant.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, Phillip Heinlein, two brothers, Ralph and James, and one sister, Janet Heinlein.

Gary Lee Willis, 50, of Charlevoix died on Friday, March 9, 2001, in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services for Gary will be held on Monday, March 12th, at 1 p.m. from the Greensky Hill United Methodist Church in Petoskey, with Geri Litchfield officiating. The family will receive friends at the Greensky Hill United Methodist Church on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery.

Gary was born on May 25, 1950, in Bay City, the son of Homer and Nelle (Ashmun) Willis. Gary had worked in the past as a crane operator. Gary was a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians in Petoskey and the Green Sky Indian Mission.

Gary is survived by his mother Nelle Willis of Shepherd; his brother, Charles H. Willis of Mulliken, Michigan; his sister, Carole Tally of Shepherd; and his nieces and nephews, Vanessa Sprague, Alexandria Sprague, Olivia Sprague and Joshua Gloria.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Homer and a sister Linda Willis and a brother Larry Willis.

Gary was proud of his Native American Heritage. He was glad that he had the opportunity to take his farewell trip west.

He has now left the physical world and will now join his ancestors in the spiritual world.

Jeffrey John DuCharme, 39, of Mt. Pleasant died on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan.

A Funeral Mass for Jeffrey J. DuCharme will be held on Monday, March 12th, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary’s University Parish in Mt. Pleasant, with Fr. Jeffrey Donner officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Sunday, March 11th, from 12-3 and 5-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The DuCharme Children’s Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Jeffrey John DuCharme was born on May 7, 1961, in Detroit, the son of Robert J. DuCharme and Helene C. (Goettler) DuCharme. He married Lisa D. Dallman June 9, 1984, in Plymouth, Michigan. Jeffrey served in the United States Air Force from 1983-1988 and was a member of the National Guard through 2000. Jeffrey graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Business Degree. He worked as a cellular site manager for LCC International for the past year. Prior to that, he had worked for GTE from 1988-2000. He was a member of the General Agency Hockey League. He served as a coach for the City Soccer League and as a Tee Ball assistant coach.

Jeffrey is survived by his wife, Lisa DuCharme and his children, Joseph Lawrence, Danielle Diane, and Samantha Mae DuCharme, all of Mt. Pleasant; his parents, Robert and Helene DuCharme of Canton, Michigan; his parents-in-law Diane and Gary Shockey of Plymouth, Michigan and Lawrence and Betty Dallman of Kingston, Massachusetts; his brother Michael (Kathleen) DuCharme of Kent, Washington; and his sisters Margot (Tom) Washington of Bellevue, Washington and Sally (Jim) Mitchell of Canton, Michigan.

Loretta C. “Dode” Price, 69, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Funeral services for Dode will be held on Saturday, March 10th, at 1 p.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Richard Fulkerson will officiate with interment to take place in Riverside Cemetery.

Dode was born December 11, 1931, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Arthur Chaffee and Dorothy (Merrill) Chaffee. Dode married Raymond A. Price May 26, 1950 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Dode worked as a homemaker for many years, where she raised several children.

Dode is survived by her children, Lenore Philo of Millington, Arnnie Price (Mary Kay) of Mt. Pleasant, Roger L. Price (Sandy) of Shepherd, Jeffery G. Price (Kristina) of Mt. Pleasant; a niece, Sally Holliday of Mt. Pleasant and her son Tony of Grand Rapids; a nephew Butch Glass (Jean) of Eagle; eight grandchildren, Edward, Ray, Chris and Matt Philo, Amy, Jeffery, and Kelly Price, Abbey Price, and Josh Price. Dode is also survived by six loving great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Hall of Mt. Pleasant and Leona Chaffee of Alma, Michigan and one sister-in-law, Lucille Chaffee of Mt. Pleasant.

Dode was preceded in death by her husband, and her two brothers, Don Chaffee and Charles Chaffee.

R. Janeen Foster was born July 9, 1930, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Clyde B. Caswell and Blanche Rita (Humphrey) Caswell. Janeen married Hilton W. Foster June 26, 1950 in Rockford, Michigan. Janeen worked as a secretary for Mt. Pleasant High School for 17 years. She was a former member of the Mt. Pleasant Country Club and Bridge Club.

Janeen is survived by her husband, Hilton Foster of Mt. Pleasant; children, Kim C. Foster (Donna) of Stevens Point, WI, Kevin W. Foster and Jayne LoPiccolo of Mt. Pleasant, John H., Foster (Karen) of Portland, Maine, and Lyn J. Jackson and David Savage of Mt. Pleasant; Grandchildren Amy N. Foster, Greggory P. Foster, Eric G. Foster, Nathan Buckner, Alison Foster, Blake R. Foster, Kelsey J. Foster, Lindsey A. Jackson, and Justin W. Jackson; and brother J. Armand Caswell (Patty) of Apopka, FL.

Merrill, Helen Behnke

Helen Behnke Merrill, 82, of Lady Lake, Florida, and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, February 27, 2001, at her home in Florida.

Funeral Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, at the Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, with burial in Riverside Cemetery

Visitation is from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at Clark Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hospice Foundation of Lake and Sumter, 12300 Lake Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778 or the First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Merrill was born October 6, 1918, to William J. and Ida Lange Behnke of Gladwin. She married Stuart Merrill on February 14, 1938, and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

She grew up in Gladwin and graduated from Gladwin High School. She and her husband moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1941, where Stuart owned and operated Merrill Drilling Company. Mrs. Merrill worked in her husband's business while raising their six children.

In Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Merrill was very active in the Fancher School PTA and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and the Elkettes, as well as involved in activities relating to the oil and gas industry.

After moving to Lady Lake, Florida, in 1990, she became a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Fruitland Park and the Lady Lake Elkettes Lodge #2793. she enjoyed many activities, including playing bridge and staying in touch with her friends.

Mrs. Merrill is survived by her husband, Stuart, of Lady Lake, Florida; five daughters, Sharon Merrill of Leesburg, Florida, Glenda (Dan) Rookey of Mt. Pleasant, Caroline Merrill of San Francisco, California, Sara (Jim) Thering of Mt. Pleasant, and Kathrine (Ron) Sluyter of Fenton; and her son Wesley Merrill of Mt. Pleasant, as well as 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Kay (Bob) Bates of Zephyrhills, Florida, and her sisters-in-law, Marj Behnke of Flint and Cecil Behnke of Ft. Mead, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ida Lange and William J. Behnke; and her brothers, Wilbur Behnke, Carl Behnke and Lawrence Behnke.

Marjorie Ewert, 74, of Lake died on Sunday, February 25, 2001, at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Marjorie Ewert was born on March 30, 1926, the daughter of Troy and Emma (Carson) Stingley. She married Melvin Ewert on March 4, 1948. Marjorie was a homemaker.

Majorie is survived by her children, Connie Schroeder (Larry) of Jeddo, JoAnn Ewert of Rochester Hills, David Ewert (Elaine) of Warren, Paula Robinson (Tim) of Smiths Creek, Michael Ewert of Lake, Patti Ewert of Harbor Beach, and Cara Ewert of Ohio; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; a brother Leon Stingley of Fort Peck, MT; sisters Myna Brandt of Montana and Mary Wilde of Nebraska.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband and a brother Lyle.

Kellyann Marie Griffin, 32, of Mt. Pleasant died on Saturday, February 24, 2001, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

A Funeral Mass for Kellyann will be held on Thursday, March 1st, at 2 p.m. from St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Remus, with Fr. William Zink officiating. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, February 27th, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m, and on Wednesday, February 28th, from 2-5 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday evening at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Remus following the Ash Wednesday service. There will be visitation prior to the funeral mass on Thursday from 12 noon until the time of service. Kellyann Marie Griffin was born on January 22, 1969, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. She was the daughter of Ernest “Sam” and Nancy J. (Rammalaere) Griffin. Her family moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1971. Kellyann was a homemaker.

Kellyann is survived by her fiancé Lee Brown of Mt. Pleasant; her daughter, Kristi Leah Griffin of Mt. Pleasant; her parents, Sam and Nancy Griffin of Mt. Pleasant; her brothers, Edward Griffin of Mancelona, Joseph Griffin (Kathleen) of Mt. Pleasant, Steven Griffin of Houghton Lake, and Shawn Griffin (Lisa) of Clare; her sisters, Connie Griffin, Carrie Wonch (David), and Rosemary Lackie (Tim), all of Mt. Pleasant; her aunts and uncles, Everett Griffin of Barryton, Karl and Dorothy Kimball of Florida, Ruth and Cy Moore of Lake City, and John and Judy Good of Mecosta; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Kellyann was preceded in death by her grandparents, Gustave and Hattie Rammalaere and Everett and Iva Griffin; and her uncles Jim Rammalaere and Robert Griffin.

Lulu Cross Sanders, 81, of Alma, Michigan died on Tuesday February 20th, at her residence.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, March 4, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Scotsdale Estates Clubhouse in Alma, Michigan. The Reverend Nancy Casey-Fulton will officiate.

Lulu was born on November 17, 1919, in Clinton Township, Michigan, the daughter of Clyde Byron Cross and Mable (Chambers) Cross. Lulu married Grant Allan Sanders January 25, 1939.

Lulu is survived by her sisters Gladys Baase of Saginaw, Michigan, and Anna Crouch of Romeoville, Illinois; her two children, Richard Allan Sanders and Barbara K. Sanders, both of Alma, Michigan; and 23 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lulu was preceded in death by her husband.

Elmer J. Neff, 80, of Houghton Lake, died on Sunday, February 18, 2001, at Tolfree Memorial Hospital in West Branch.

Funeral services for Elmer J. Neff will be held on Wednesday, February 21st, at 2 p.m. from
Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Rosebush.

Elmer J. Neff was born on July 5, 1920, in Rosebush, the son of Jacob and Olivia Neff. He served in the U.S. Army and was a four-year veteran of WWII. Elmer worked in the foundry and construction industry in Lansing and had also worked for the City of Lansing. He married Patricia Masseau, who preceded Elmer in death in 1970. Elmer was a member of the V.F.W. and the Moose Lodge in Houghton Lake and the Knights of Columbus in Lansing.

Elmer is survived by his sons Robert (Pat) Neff or Lewiston and Delbert (Anna) Neff of Olivet; his daughters Kathy (Charlie) Sharp of Olivet and Patricia Stubleski of Lansing; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother Gaylord Neff of Lansing; and a sister Shirlene Kunkel of East Lansing.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his sister June, and his parents Jake and Olivia.

Brian Martin Gooding, 47, of Lake Isabella, died on Saturday, February 17, 2001, at his home.

A Memorial Service for Brian will be held on Tuesday, February 20th, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant with Fr. Jeffrey Donner of St. Mary’s University Parish officiating. Cremation has taken place, with interment to be at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery in Dearborn, Michigan.

Brian M. Gooding was born on December 21, 1953, in Dearborn, the son of Ernest and Jean (Martin) Gooding. He married Celest Zuczek on August 11, 1979, in Livonia. Brian graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Madonna University in Livonia. He was employed for the past 10 years with Firstbank Corporation and most recently as Vice President of Commercial Loans. Brian was awarded Favorite Banker of the Year in 1998. Brian was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club. He was a board member for the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce and for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Brian is survived by his wife Celest Gooding of Lake Isabella; his sister Susan Jean Gooding of Santa Monica, CA.; and his mother-in-law Helen Zuczek and sister-in-law Susan Zuczek of Westland.

Brian was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert Weaver Secson, 64, of Mt. Pleasant died on Friday, February 16, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw.

Funeral services for Bob Secson will be held on Wednesday, February 21st, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, with The Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiating. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 23rd, at 2 p.m. at the Imlay Township Cemetery, Imlay City, Michigan.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Monday, February 19th, from 7–9 p.m. and on Tuesday, February 20th, from 2–5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan and Community Cancer Services. Bob Secson was born on March 7, 1936, in Imlay City, the son of Louis and L. Beatrice “Bea” (Weaver) Secson. Bob married Patricia E. Wood on June 1, 1963 in Lapeer. He served as a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army from October 31, 1966 to October 30, 1968. Bob was employed at the Mt. Pleasant Regional center, working in administrative positions. He retired in 1989. He was a partner in Mt. Pleasant Persons, Inc., performing consulting services with the physically and mentally challenged.

Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughter, Rachelle A. Secson and Lloyd Bateman of Kalamazoo and his son, Thomas L. Secson of Chicago, Illinois.

Bob was preceded in death by both of his parents and one older brother, Louis Glen Secson.
