Cheryl J. Deal, 50, of Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 14, 1946, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Nettie Elizabeth Weaver Bowers of Hagerstown and the late Glenn Linford Bowers.

She was employed by Caring Hands Connection, Hagerstown.

She was a member of Black Rock Bible Church, Hagerstown.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Gwen E. Deal of Hagerstown; two sons, Timothy C. Deal of Smithsburg and Eric J.D. Deal of Hagerstown; three sisters, Virginia B. Deal of Boonsboro, Carolyn E. Shifler of Hagerstown and Joann Rowland of Williamsport; three brothers, Glenn L. Bowers, Charles C. Bowers and Joseph A. Bowers, all of Hagerstown; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Black Rock Bilbe Church.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Grace P. Breslin

LITITZ, Pa. - Grace Pearrell Breslin, 90, of Lititz, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at Lutheran Acres, Lititz.

Born Jan. 6, 1907, in Hedgesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert K. and Frances F. Brown Pearrell. She lived for many years in Washington, D.C., and McLean, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Breslin.

She was a graduate of Hedgesville High School.

She was a member of the Moravian Congregation of Lititz.

She is survived by one daughter, Ellen Kay Breslin Dell of Camp Hill, Pa.; one sister, M. Ione "Tommie" Pearrell Breslin of Lititz; three granddaughters, Karen Ford of Orangeburg, S.C., Susan Muma of Gaithersburg, Md., and Gretchen Hanrahan of Camp Hill, Pa.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Frances Pearrell.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Good Samaritan, Lititz, Pa. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hedgesville Cemetery. The Rev. Terri Cofiell will officiate.

Family and friends will gather at Hedgesville United Methodist Church following the service on Saturday.

Elsie M. Davis

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Elsie Marie Davis, 92, of Wide River Farms, Harpers Ferry, died Sunday, May 4, 1997, at her home.

Born April 30, 1905, in Alexandria, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ida Sutherland Tyler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Jacob Davis, in 1956.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Catherine P. King of Belmont, Calif.; three sons, Hilton L. Davis of Fredericksburg, Va., Robert J. Davis of Alexandria and Wade D. Davis of Harpers Ferry; 31 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Elsie Horton; one son, Alfred T. Davis; and two brothers, Robert Tyler and Walter C. Tyler.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. B. Guilford Turner will officiate. Burial will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daniel C. Grove Sr.

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Daniel C. Grove Sr., 60, of 11191 Loop Road, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Harrisburg Hospital.

Born June 8, 1936, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Orville C. and Evelyn M. Brown Grove. He lived in the Scotland Soldier Orphan School, Scotland, Pa., from 1946 until 1950. He also lived in the South Mountain, Pa., area.

He was a 1954 graduate of Quincy High School. He took courses through the military.

He was employed by Hess Manufacturing. He was a power support systems mechanic foreman at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 1990 after 34 years. Following retirement, he worked part time at the South Mountain Golf Course.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served two tours of duty during the Korean War.

He was a member and umpire of the United States Softball Association of Pittsburgh; a member of the South Mountain Fish and Game Association; the National AARP and a life member of the South Mountain Volunteer Fire Co. and Ambulance Squad.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria E. Strang Grove, whom he married April 10, 1961; one daughter, Kandi Sue Grove of South Mountain; three sons, Jeffrey L. Grove, Daniel E. Grove Jr. and Timothy A. Grove, all of South Mountain; a twin brother, Robert C. Grove of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Ray Grove.

Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. Mervil R. Stambaugh will officiate. Burial, with military services conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard, Chambersburg, will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

Suzanne L. Garde

Suzanne L. Garde, 34, of 10024 Garis Shop Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 27, 1962, in Washington County, she was the daughter of P. Lowell and Sonja J. Mills Fox Sr. of Hagerstown.

She was employed by Central Farm and Tractor, Valley Plaza, Hagerstown.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one daughter, Heather R. Starleper at home; one son, Roland Garde III at home; one sister, Kendra S. Baer of Waynesboro, Pa.; two brothers, Philip L. Fox Jr. and James A. Fox, both of Hagerstown; maternal grandmother, Adaline Mills of Hagerstown; paternal grandfather, Ethel J. Fox of Williamsport; and nephews.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Bryan Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Betty Louise Dawson, 67, of 115 N. Jonathan St., Hagerstown, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at her home.

Born April 18, 1930, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late John Gershan and Margie Viola Sprankle Dawson.

She was employed as a cashier by A&P Supermarket, McCrory's and J.J. Newberry Co.

She attended John Wesley United Methodist Church and the Salvation Army.

She is survived by her former husband, Joseph R. Stotelmyer; three daughters, Vivian C. Bostetter, Cheryl Cousin and Margianna Stotelmyer, all of Hagerstown; one son, Steven Stotelmyer of Hagerstown; two sisters, Hazel Grove and Frances Smith, both of Hagerstown; five brothers, James Dawson, William Dawson, Roy Dawson, Gary Dawson and George Dawson, all of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be held in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Helen Olivine Hoover Prosper, 83, of 18030 Hollyhock Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 14, 1914, in Smithsville, Va., she was the daughter of the late David Alexander and Mary Crewey Hoover.

She was employed by Fairchild Aircraft.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Frank Prosper; five daughters, Linda Kearns of Martinsburg, W.Va., Sheilah Greer of Colonial Heights, Va., Frances Gladhill, Debbie Vinson and Edith Kinnamont, all of Hagerstown; four sisters, Ruth Hoover and Rachel Clapp, both of Saltville, Va., Grace Bailey of Charleston, W.Va., and Ethel Cox of St. Paul, Minn.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ann Weatherholt will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Annabelle V. Miller

Annabelle Virginia Miller, 76, of 13021 Resh Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at her home.

Born Oct. 14, 1920, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Darlington and Mary Rachel Chaney Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Jacob Miller, on Oct. 14, 1995.

She was of the Pentecostal faith.

She is survived by one son, David W. Miller of Hagerstown; and one sister, Viola Burger of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Davis.

Services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Ronnie Lynch will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Florence C. Duffey

Florence Catherine Duffey, 73, formerly of 724 Chestnut St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born June 30, 1923, in State Line, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Foster and Mary Hockensmith Bowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Duffey, in 1978.

She was a member of Christ's Reformed Church.

She also was a member of American Legion, Funkstown Post 211 Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Bessie Mae Decker and Margaret L. "Peggy" Dawson of Mont Alto, Pa.; one son, Michael O. Duffey; one sister, Mary Matthews; two brothers, Paul Bowers and Ira Bowers; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

James T. Murphy

James Thomas Murphy, 61, of 852 Snyder Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md.

Born June 11, 1935, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late James Michael and Rose Mary Morrissey Murphy.

He was self-employed. He retired as a manufacturers representative.

He was a member of the Broadfording Church of God.

He also was a member of Grand Lodge AF&AM of Kansas, Sunflower 0086; Ithiel RA Chapter 27, Past High Priest, Hagerstown; Palestine Council 16 R&SM, Hagerstown; St. Bernard Commandery 9, Knights Templar, Hagerstown; and AARP.

He was a volunteer with Hospice of Washington County.

He is survived by his wife, June Resh Murphy; one daughter, Beatrice June Morrell of Hagerstown; three sons, James Wesley Murphy of Harrisburg, Pa., Timothy Michael Murphy of Virginia Beach, Va., and Thomas Patrick Murphy of Falling Waters, W.Va.; one sister, Ellen Quinn of Center Moriches, N.Y.; three brothers, Edward Murphy of Shoreham, N.Y., Thomas Murphy of Bethpage, N.Y., and Peter Murphy of Garner, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

Blaine H. Freels

GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. - Blaine H. Freels, 56, of Great Cacapon, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 26, 1940, in Anderson County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Hugh Chester Freels.

He was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by one daughter, Tanna Marie Bonincontria of Phoenix; two sisters, Anna J. Thompson of Great Cacapon and Lisa Melton of Mohawk, Tenn.; three brothers, Samuel B. Freels Sr. of Great Cacapon, Paul Freels of Baltimore and Chester W. Freels of Hixon, Tenn.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Jeffrey L. Strachan will officiate. Burial will be private.

Doris L. McPherson

PARKTON, Md. - Doris L. McPherson, of Parkton, died Sunday, May 4, 1997, at her home.

She was the daughter of Harold R. and Ruth C. Lewis of Myersville, Md.

She was a 1964 graduate of Frostburg State University. She received her master's degree in special education from Johns Hopkins University.

She retired as a reading specialist from the Baltimore County School System, Prettyboy Elementary School.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Douglas R. McPherson; one stepdaughter, Sheri E. Pessagno of Baltimore; two sisters, Anne M. Harne of Myersville and Linda C. Graham of Big Pool; and two brothers, Richard E. Lewis of Frederick, Md., and Donald L. Lewis of Myersville.

A memorial service sill be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Ruck Towson Funeral home, 1050 York Road, Towson, Md. A memorial reception will follow the service.

Harry W. Mowery

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Harry Wesley Mowery, 81, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 14, 1915, in Everett, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles Luther and Alice Margaret Jay Mowery.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Margaret Walls Mowery, on May 28, 1981.

He was employed as a foreman by Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corp., Berkeley Springs, until his retirement.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of Wesleyan Chapel, Berkeley Springs.

He was a member of Webster B. Harrison American Legion post 26, Hancock.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita A. Michael Copeland Mowery; two daughters, Dorothy Jean Spring of Lompoc, Calif., and Carol Jacque Harbaugh of Berkeley Springs; five sons, Donald Richard Mowery of Vacaville, Calif., Terry Lee Mowery and Larry Wesley Mowery, both of Lompoc, Jack Thomas Mowery of Medina, Ohio, and Stephen Harry Mowery of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Betty DeMauro of Johnstown, Pa., and Emma Suter of Bedford, Pa.; one brother, Lloyd Mowery of Chambersburg, Pa.; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Jennie Johnson.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. William C. Swope will officiate. Burial with full military graveside honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Alpine United Methodist Church Cemetery, Pious Ridge, W.Va.

Alvin F. Hafer

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Alvin F. Hafer, 81, of 6399 Guitner Road, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at his home.

Born April 7, 1916, in Quincy Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Fred M. and Carrie Bachtell Hafer.

He was a farmer. He also operated a hammer mill for the late George Myers. He was employed by Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, Pa., and managed the Farmers Union Co-Op, Greencastle. He retired in 1979.

He was a member of the former Peace United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bernice Kalbflesh Hafer; one son, Fred E. Hafer of Greencastle; one grandson, Brian Hafer of Greencastle; two great-granddaughters; two nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Hafer and Kathryn Hafer; and three brothers, Edgar Hafer, Frank Hafer and Clarence Hafer.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, Pa. The Rev. Donald G. Fishel will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

James H. Robinson Sr.

RIPPON, W.Va. - James Henry Robinson Sr., 94, of Rippon, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at his home.

Born Dec. 6, 1902, in Clarke County, Va., he was the son of the late Daniel Beverly and Connie Tracey Robinson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Laura Johnson Robinson.

He was employed as a security guard by Dixie-Narco, retiring in 1966.

He was a member of the Sylvannah Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Trustee Board and chairman of the Deacon Board.

He is survived by one daughter, Ollie Louise Robinson Malcome of Rippon; one son, James Robinson Jr. of Berryville, Va.; one sister, Tessie Long of Reading, Pa.; and one brother, Clyde Robinson of Rippon.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marjorie Virginia Robinson; one son, Lewis Garfield Robinson; four sisters, Bessie Robinson, Icetha Robinson, Daisy Robinson and Cletus Robinson; two brothers, Carl Robinson and Lyle Robinson; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Sylvannah Baptist Church. The Rev. Lawrence Wilson Jr. and the Rev. Frederick Poles will officiate. Burial will be in Myerstown Cemetery.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Thomas Andrew Jackson "Jack" Haynes, 67, of Charles Town, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Nov. 21, 1929, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Samuel Washington and Georgia Clarabell Haynes Heflin.

He attended Page Jackson School, Charles Town.

He was employed by Willard O. Lloyd Farm, Charles Town, for 45 years.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Laura J. Carey Boyd; five daughters, Celestine A. Boyd of Martinsburg, W.Va., Donna Turner of Ranson, Lisa Silver, Anita G. Pollard and Misti M. Haynes Silver, all of Charles Town; eight sons Clarence E. Boyd, Thomas E. Boyd, Bruce A. Haynes and Kevin S. Haynes, all of Charles Town, Keith A. Boyd of Shepherdstown, W.Va., Stephen Johnson and Donald Creamer, both of Martinsburg, and Karl L. Boyd of Middleway, W.Va.; one sister, Carlmileta Bowens of Charles Town; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Patsy Ann King and Hope Marie Haynes; two sisters, Dorothy Rosser and Eva Bruiner; and one brother, Hall Rosser.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at King Apostle Holiness Church of God, West 3rd Ave., Ranson. The Rev. Eugene E. Baltimore and the Rev. Joe Liles will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Charles Town.

Ruth E.E. Brandenburg

FREDERICK, Md. - Ruth Elizabeth Eaves Brandenburg, 79, of West Patrick Street, Frederick, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born July 22, 1917, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Biddinger Eaves.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson R. Brandenburg.

She was employed by Frederick County Board of Education, retiring after 18 years of service. She spent most of that time at South Frederick Elementary School. She owned and operated Brandenburgs' Electric for 25 years. She also owned Brandenburgs' Gift Shop, Patrick Street. She was employed part-time by the Blue Ridge News Agency for 18 years.

She was a member of the Maryland Retired Teachers Association; Frederick County Retired Teachers Association; Rainbow Belles; and American Legion Auxiliary of Francis Scott Key Post 11, Frederick.

She is survived by one daughter, Jean E. Yedloutschnig of Long Island, N.Y.; two sons, E. Pat Brandenburg of Harpers Ferry, W.Va. and Charles N. Reeder Jr. of Frederick; one sister, Evelyn Poplo of Frederick; one brother, Donald Eaves of Walkersville, Md.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Eleanor L. Waugerman; one sister, Eva Engle; and five brothers, Allen Eaves, Clarence Eaves, Charles Eaves, Paul Eaves and Walter Eaves.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. The Rev. Mark Foucart will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

Born Oct. 14, 1934, in Moler's Crossroads, Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John W. and Nancy Butler Fraley Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul G. Orr.

She was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Teri Rouse of Martinsburg and Cristie Johnson of Shepherdstown; two sisters, Mary Alice Bell of Shepherdstown and Willa Whitmer of Brighton, Tenn.; one brother, John Fraley Jr. of Shepherdstown; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Douglas Lee Fraley Sr.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown. The Rev. G.T. Schramm will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Martha M. Needy

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Martha Miller Needy, 87, of Route 1, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Heartland Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 24, 1909, in Scrabble, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Carl and Daisy Tabler Miller.

She was a member of the Christ Reformed Church, Shepherdstown.

She is survived by her husband, William H. Needy; two sisters, Georgia Imbach and Frances Sibert, both of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Nannie Woods, Louise Keller, Sally LeMaster, Susan Eversole and Lena Stiles; and two brothers, Marion Miller and Reynolds Knipe.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Bronson Staley will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary C. Langdon

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Mary Catherine Langdon, 91, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at Robin Run Village Health Center, Indianapolis.

Born Sept. 27, 1905, in Summit Point, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Stanley L. and Eva Sowers Hardesty.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence C. Heiskell, on Jan. 1, 1926, and by her second husband, Harry B. Langdon, on Feb. 20, 1978.

She attended Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church, Charles Town.

She is survived by three sons, Harry L. Langdon of Los Angeles, Lawrence C. Heiskell of Blackburg, Va., and Stanley H. Heiskell of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Adams and Evalyn Brown.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town. The Rev. Keith Nickle will officiate.

Friends will be received Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Jeanette L.W. Orye

Jeanette Lenisse Wenk Orye, 70, of 106 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 13, 1927, in London, England, she was the daughter of the late Isiah C. and Janet William May. She came to America in 1946.

She attended schools in London.

She was a member of VFW 1936 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Elwood Orye; four daughters, Sherian K. Poe of Welcome, Md., Rhea M. Pennella of Boonsboro, Melissa D. Laney of Ariton, Ala., and Mary Susan Taylor of Smithsburg; one sister, Joyce Wullerman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three brothers, David May, Rhys May and Robert May, all of London; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Don C. Evason will officiate.

There will be no viewing.
