BOGALUSA - Funeral arrangements have been completed for Louis Magee,
age 51, who died Saturday in the Veterans Administration Medical Center
in Nashville, TN. He was a resident of Nashville and a former resident
of Bogalusa.
Visitation will be today at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa
from 3-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Levias
Temple Church of God in Christ, with Supt.
Charles Levias officiating. Interment will follow in Bogalusa Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Rosetta Tate Magee of Nashville, TN; a
daughter, Terri Magee of Angie; a son, Louis E. Magee Jr. of Bogalusa;
a step-daughter, Dalisha Burns and a step-son, Patrick Tute both of Nashville;
a devoted mother, Velma Brumfield Magee of Bogalusa; two sisters, De Ella
Magee Bickham and Margie Magee Johnson both of Bogalusa; four brothers,

Margie Sarah Thomas Jarrell
(Died Dec. 21, 1999)
BOGALUSA - Margie Sarah Thomas Jarrell, age 50, died yesterday at her
home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Bogalusa.
She is survived by her mother, Esther Mae Garner Thomas of Franklinton;
a son, Goodbee Gordon Jarrell; a grandson, Matthew Holmes of Bogalusa;
a granddaughter, Jennifer Holmes of Bogalusa; three brothers, Glyn Ray
Thomas of Franklinton, Randy Keith Thomas of Bogalusa and Charles Roy Thomas
of Ash, NC; three sisters, Bobbie Jean Warren of Missouri, Daisy Marie
Bennett of Tabor City, NC, Ola Virginia Thomas of Franklinton. She is also
survived by several nieces and nephews and a very special companion and
friend, Dudley Holmes.
She was preceded in death by her father, Goodbee Gordon Thomas Jr;
one brother, Goodbee Gordon Thomas III and two grandchildren, Areil and
Jerilyn Jarrell.
Visitation will be tomorrow from 6-9 p.m. at Brown-McGehee Funeral
Home, continuing on Friday after 8 a.m. The funeral services will be conducted
in the chapel on Friday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. John Pounders officiating.
Eunice Cooper

BOGALUSA - Eunice Cooper, age 85, a resident of Bogalusa, died yesterday
in Rest Haven Living Center. She was a memberof the Edgewood Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Dudley Cooper of Bogalusa; three grandchildren,
Patricia Cooper, Jackie Cooper, Maria Galloway, Derinda and Toby Hughes;
three great-grandchildren, Adam Hughes, Jennifer Hughes and Brittany Galloway.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cooper; a daughter,
Betty Cooper; and a sister, Ernestine Henley.
Visitation will be today at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 5:30 to
9 p.m. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Curtis Epnett, the Rev.
Lochie Tynes and the Rev. Toby Hughes. Interment will follow in Ponemah
Cemetery.
William "Charles" Phelps
FRANKLINTON - William "Charles" Phelps, age 61, died Dec. 27, 1999
at Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton. He was a retired electrician
for Red Simpson Construction.
Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home after 5 p.m. today until time
of funeral service at 2 p.m tomorrow in the funeral home chapel with the
Rev. Jerry Cox officiating. Interment will follow in the Nobles Cemetery
at Pine.
He is survived by his wife, Bernita Cox Phelps of Franklinton; two

Pam Phelps all residents of Franklinton; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy
and Wayne Hunt of Franklinton; two brothers, Curtis Ray Phelps of Mandeville

BOGALUSA - James "Sun" Lewis, age 74, died Friday at the Bogalusa Medical

Ruth Gentry Talley
COVINGTON - Miss Ruth Gentry Talley, a life-long Bogalusa resident
and civic leader, died Dec. 29, 1999 in St. Tammany Parish Hospital. For
the last three and one half years, Miss Talley was a resident of the Christwood
Nursing Home community in Covington, where a dedicated and loving staff
attended her.
Funeral arrangements include visitation at the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial
Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Friday, December 31, followed by a memorial
service at 11 a.m. In keeping with her wishes she will be buried in a private
interment in the Ponemah Cemetery. Ruth Gentry requested that instead of
flowers, those who wish are asked to make a contribution to the ESM Methodist
Church. Poole Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Gentry Talley was born in Bogalusa on Aug. 27, 1921, to Bogalusa
City Attorney Bascom D. Talley Sr. and Maude Gentry Talley. She attended
Bogalusa public schools and graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1938.
While at BHS she demonstrated her gifts for music, drama and the arts.
A member of the Hollins College centennial graduating class of 1942,
she majored in history and arappreciation with minors in both music and
voice. She pursued her musical and artistic interests by participating
in various college choirs and drama groups.
Following college graduation Miss Talley attended Sophie Newcomb College
where she completed the requirements for a Teacher's Certificate for the
State of Louisiana, fulfilling a promise to her father. She returned to
Bogalusa and began work as a legal secretary and bookkeeper for her brother,
Bascom D. Talley, Jr. in the law firm, which would become Talley, Anthony,
Hughes & Knight. She graduated from the L.S.U. School of Law in 1953,
a member of Phi Delta Delta Legal Fraternity. She returned to Bogalusa
and practiced law in partnership with her brother, as well as John Anthony,
Charles Hughes and Richard Knight. At the firm she specialized in probate
and real estate law for more than twenty years until her retirement.
During her legal career Miss Talley received many awards and recognitions.
She served as President of the Washington Parish Bar Association and the
National Association of Women Lawyers. She received an honorary Doctorate
of Laws Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She
was a member of the Public Afffairs Research Council of Louisiana and the
American Judicature Society. During her professional career she served
as a member of the Board of Directors of the Parish National Bank, the
Columbia Road Land Company and the Bogalusa Realty Company.
An active civic volunteer, she served in various leadership positions
in the Bogalusa Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club,
the Bogalusa Civic League, the Bogalusa Garden Guild, and the YWCA where
she served as president from 1957 to 1959. Her longest and most active
participation was with the Philharmonic Club, a federated music club in
Bogalusa. She served as the club's president on three occasions: 1956-1958,
1966-1967 and 1985-1986.
Ruth Gentry Talley was an artist who enjoyed concerts and opera and
participated in a wide range of artistic endeavors. These included woodcarving,
mosaics, and painting in various media. During her professional career
she participated in and hosted The Thursday Painters, an informal group
who shared her passion for things artistic. Her last painting completed
only weeks before she died is an abstract watercolor painting entitled
Ocean. Both working on the painting and the resulting picture gave her
great pleasure. Her fascination with and collection of oriental art-especially
Buddhas, highlight her eclectic range of artistic interests. She began
collecting these figures while in high school and continued the quest for
unusual and different Buddhas throughout her adult life.
Ruth Gentry Talley is survived by her sister-in-law, Imogene Wilson
Talley Barrios of Bogalusa; her niece, Jean Talley Drew of Minden, and
her nephews, Bascom D. Talley, III of Washington, DC, Morris W. Talley
of Baton Rouge, and James E. Talley of Covington. In addition she is survived
by five grand nephews and two grand nieces: Cullen R. Talley, Richard H.
Drew 111, Georgia Gentry Drew, Heather L. Talley, Travis C. Talley, Bascom
D. Talley, IV, and Gilman J. Talley.

Mr. Walters died Dec. 31, 1999 at Bogalusa Community Medical Center.
A member of First Baptist Church of Bogalusa, Mr. Walters was a United
States Navy veteran, serving in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Donese Walters and Ernestine
Brooks Walters Bennett.
Survivors include several cousins and a host of friends.
Stephen L. Richardson
FRANKLINTON - Funeral services for Stephen L. Richardson, 66, a resident
of Franklinton, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist
Church with the Revs. Michael Simmons and Charles Floyd Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the Ellis Cemetery, Crain Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home and continues
after 9 a.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church until the time
of the services.
Mr. Richardson died Dec. 31, 1999 in the St. Tammany Hospital in Covington.
A graduate of Louisiana Tech University and a longtime Franklinton
businessman, Mr. Richardson was a veteran of the United States Army, serving
in the Korean conflict.
Mr. Richardson served on the Franklinton Board of Aldermen and was
an active member of the Franklinton Volunteer Fire Department for many
years, serving as assistant chief and chief.
He served on the original board of the Washington Parish Hospital District
1 (Riverside Medical Center) and was retired as maintenance superintendent
of Riverside Medical Center.
Mr. Richardson, a member of Centenary Methodist Church, was employed
at Ace Hardware in Franklinton at the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Katherine Richardson,
and a sister, Anita Magee.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Stewart Richardson, Franklinton;
a daughter and son-on-law, Kay and Kelvin McCain, Franklinton; a son and
daughter-in-law, Clay and Stacey Richardson, Franklinton; a sister, Joan
Simmons, Kentwood; four grandchildren, Stephen Lee McCain, Conner McCain,
Mary Kate Richardson and Peyton Richardson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Miller, and a special
friend, Doris Calabresi.

Iva Sumrall, Bogalusa; grandchildren, Ryan Scott Miley, William Stanford
Sumrall Jr., and Bryan Anthony Miley, all of Bogalusa; step-grandchildren,

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lozie Sumrall; a

Home in Hattiesburg. She was a homemaker and a member of the Magnolia Baptist

Funeral Home in Tylertown. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 11 a.m.
at the Carson Springs Baptist Church. The Revs.

in the Carson Springs Cemetery.
She is survived by a son, Wayne Sorrell, Hattiesburg; four brothers,

PORT ARTHUR, TX - A funeral service will be held this week in Port
Arthur for Helen Blackwell, who died yesterday in Port Arthur.
She is survived by four brothers, Howard Guy Jr., Liberty, TX, Richard
Guy, Bogalusa, Emmett Guy, Angie and Douglas Guy, Franklinton; a sister,
Doris Guy Pope, Port Arthur; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Blackwell; her parents,
Howard and Ethel Guy; and a brother, Tommy Daryl Guy.

BOGALUSA - Funeral arrangements have been completed for Shelby Magee,
age 58, who died on Dec. 27, 1999 at Lakeview Regional Medical Center in
Covington. He was a native and former resident of Franklinton.
Visitation will be tomorrow at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton
from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral service on Friday at 1 p.m. Elder
Raymond Dyson will officiate.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary "Lulu" (Emile) Favaroth and Patricia
"Trish" (John D.) Cotton, both of Franklinton; an uncle, Marshal Magee,
Franklinton; his common law wife, Juanita Thompson, Bogalusa; a special
friend, Johnny Miller, Franklinton and a host of special cousins, in-laws,
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Willie B. McKelphin

BOGALUSA - The funeral service for Willie B. McKelphin, 69, a resident
of Bogalusa, is scheduled at noon Saturday at Crain and Sons Funeral Home,
with the Rev. James Cyrus officiating.
Burial will follow in the Bogalusa Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 10-11 a.m. until time for the
final service.
Mr. McKelphin died Saturday in the Bogalusa Community Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hosea (Etta)
McKelphin; granddaughter, Jacqueline Denise Payne; and grandson, Kercuant
Devon McKelphin.

Clemon Louise Laird Griffith

FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Clemon Louise Laird Griffith,
89, a resident of Plainview, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Brown-McGehee
Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Gary Snyder and the Rev. Charles "Sonny"
Griffith, will officiate, with burial following in the Plainview Baptist
Church cemetery, Visitation will be today from 4-10 p.m. at the funeral
home, continuing after 8 a.m. tomorrow until time for the final service.
Mrs. Griffith died early yesterday in Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Franklinton.
A member of Plainview Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Charles Curtis Griffith; a daughter, Shirley Jones; three
grandchildren; her parents, Lee and Alice Laird; and a brother, Victor
Lee Laird.
She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Charles "Sonny" Griffith, Saraland,
AL and Rodney E.
Griffith, Bogalusa; three daughters, Helen Edwards and Virginia Adams,
both of Bogalusa and Beverly Hall of Ripley, WV; 20 grandchildren and numerous

FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Larcenia Lewis Thompson, 80,
a resident of Pascagoula, MS, is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Sweet
Rest Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Mallery Callahan officiating.
Burial will follow at Sweet Home Memorial Park Cemetery in Franklinton,
with Dickey Brothers Funeral Home, Biloxi, MS directing. Ms. Thompson died
Saturday at Chateau Deville Nursing Home in Pascagoula, MS.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Thompson and two daughters,
Mayfus Johnson and Betty Dyson.
