Leonard Albert Norton 
Dec. 30, 2001
NESS CITY — Leonard Albert Norton, 75, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis, Wichita.
He was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Gove County to Thomas Fahey and Juanita (Lehman) Norton.
He married Ilene Merryfield in Dighton on Nov. 21, 1951.
He was a farmer and stockman and had lived in Ness County most of his life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the United Methodist Church of Utica, and served as director of the Wet Walnut Watershed District for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Marlin Norton, Ness City; a daughter, Vicky Foos, Scott City; two brothers, Clell, Seattle, Wash., and Lee, Ness City; four sisters, Jean Borthwick, Beeler, Faye Bauer, Hays, Wilma Ochs, Granberry, Texas, and Judith Carder, Fountain, Colo.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Utica, with the Rev. Bruce Ferguson officiating; burial in Utica Cemetery with graveside honors by the Utica American Legion.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Utica United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

Alvina Marie Cole 
McCRACKEN — Alvina Marie Cole, 73, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.
She was born June 13, 1928, in Ness County to Frank and Clara (Marak) McCormick.
She married Doyle F. Foster on Aug. 21, 1950, in La Crosse. He died Jan. 15, 1979. She married William D. Cole on July 30, 1991, in McCracken.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, McCracken. She was a bookkeeper for Western Light Co. and Farmers Co-op in McCracken and La Crosse for many years. She was a longtime McCracken area resident. 
Survivors include her husband, of the home; four sons, Robert Foster, McCracken, Kenneth Foster, Las Vegas, Francis “Frank” Foster, Florissant, Colo., and Frederick Foster, Reggio Colbaria, Italy; a stepson, James Cole, Long Island; four stepdaughters, Colette Traxler, Bazine, Susan Lilly, Mentor, Patricia Bruntz, Valley Center, and Mary Cole, Overland Park; a sister, Jean Schutte, McCracken; a brother, Sylvester “Bet” McCormick, McCracken; a granddaughter; and 10 stepgrandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, McCracken, with Father Benjamin Martin officiating. Her body was donated to the University of Kansas for medical research.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, is in charge of arrangements.
