Harold Austin Bell ~ 1947 - 2001
Harold Austin Bell, 54, passed away Saturday,
August 18, 2001, at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He was born January 3,
1947, at Nashville, Kansas, son of Oliver David
and Wilma Margarite Austin Bell. He received a bachelor's degree in
elementary education, a master's degree in divinity
and a master's degree in counseling and guidance. A Medicine Lodge
resident for nine years, moving from Downs, he
was a retired minister, and had served the Marquette United Methodist
Church congregation in the 1980's. He belonged
to Independent-Community Bible Fellowship and Veterans of Foreign
Wars. He served in the U.S. Army. On December
31, 1983, he married Kathleen Edwards at Wichita. He was preceded in
death by his father. Survivors include his wife,
Kathleen, Medicine Lodge; a son, William Oliver Bell, of the home; a
daughter, Elizabeth Kathleen Bell, of the home;
his mother, Medicine Lodge; a brother, Will David Bell, Medicine Lodge;
and a sister, Glenda Margaret Singer, Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at
Community Bible Fellowship, Medicine Lodge, with
Pastor Dwain Richert presiding. Burial was in the Nashville Liberty
Township Cemetery, with military graveside honors
by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorials may be sent to the church,
Southwind Hospice or the ALS Association, all

Charles E. Chaney Jr.
1955 - 2001
Charles E. "Chuck" Chaney Jr., 46, Lindsborg,
passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 9, 2001, at his home.
He was born March 10, 1955 at Moundridge, Kansas,
son of Charles E. and Elsa (Bunk) Chaney Sr.
He was a resident of Lindsborg, since 1975, moving
from McPherson. He was a Material Handler for Abbott Laboratories,
McPherson.
On July 27, 1973, he married Gaylene Price at
McPherson. She survives.
He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church,
Lindsborg Lions Club, Lindsborg Boy Scouts, Smoky Valley Booster
Club, the Chain Gang for the high school, college
and middle school football, all of Lindsborg.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles
Chaney Sr., and a brother, James Chaney.
Survivors include his wife, Gaylene Chaney, Lindsborg;
three sons, Aaron Chaney, Sterling, Colorado, Adam Chaney and
wife, Terri, and Andy Chaney, Lindsborg;
his mother, Elsa Boston and step-father, George, Salina; one brother, Lawrence
Chaney, Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Debra
Venturini, Freeport, Pennsylvania.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday,
August 13, 2001, at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Lindsborg, with the
Rev. Dr. Victoria Brundage officiating.
Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg.
Memorials may be given to the Lindsborg Boy Scouts,
in care of Hays-Christians Funeral Home, P.O. Box 386, Lindsborg,

Fred R. Williams
1942 - 2001
Fred R. Williams, 58, Fircrest, Washington, passed
away Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home in Fircrest, after a lengthy
battle with cancer.
Fred was born July 26, 1942, at Little River,
Kansas, son of Lester Lyle and Rosalie (McCutcheon) Williams. He
grew up
in Ellsworth County and had lived the past 19
years in Washington state.
He was a retired Major, 20 year career, in the
U.S. Air Force and was the manager of the Flight Simulator program at
McCord Air Force Base up until the time of his
death.
He married Susan Jensen of Fircrest on December
29, 1983. She survives.
Fred attended the Langley Methodist Church while
growing up and served with the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam.
Other survivors include a son, Bradley Williams,
Kent, Washington; his parents, Lester and Rosalie Williams, rural
Marquette; one brother, Robert (Bob) Williams,
Little River; one step-brother (cousin), Ronald Shriner, Azel, Texas; one
stepson, Kevin Jensen, San Francisco, California;
one stepdaughter, Erin Campbell, Fircrest, Washington; one
granddaughter; one step-granddaughter; and three
step-grandsons.
Inurnment preceded the memorial service at 9:30
a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2001, in the Langley Cemetery, west of
Marquette. Memorial service was held immediately
following at 10:30 a.m. in the Marquette United Methodist Church with
Pastor Larry Brock officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Marquette United
Methodist Church.

Roy S. Peterson 1946
- 2001
Roy Sigmond Peterson was born in Marquette, Kansas
October 18, 1945. On August 4, 2001, he went to be with Jesus.
He was preceded in death by his father,
Kermit Peterson, and brother, Kit Peterson. He will be missed by
those he left
behind. Thankfully, we are certain that
he is in much better place. He was a Christian.
Roy had many life accomplishments. He was
an avid hunter and sportsman. He had a talent for making friends
and making
everyone laugh. He was a successful real
estate investor. His greatest accomplishment was his love for his
six children, who
will miss him very much. We are blessed
to know that he loved us well-we always ended our conversations with "I
Love
You".
He is survived by his mother, Marie Peterson,
Kerrville, Texas; son, Lief, and wife, Christie Peterson, Dallas, Texas;
daughter Polliana Peterson, Tempe, Arizona; daughters,
Bethany, Teal and Micha Peterson and son, Hunter Peterson, all of
Houston.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August
8, 2001, at Brookside Funeral Home, FM 1960 at Champions, Houston,
Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to
the Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette.

Henry "Hank" Clifton Manwarren
1929 - 2001
Mrs. Henry "Beth" Manwarreen
1933 - 2001
Relatives received word of the death of Henry,
72, and Beth, 68, Manwarren, who died in a plane accident in Grofton, Iowa
Saturday, July 21, 2001. They lived in Merced,
California but were formerly of Lyons, Kansas. He is a nephew of
Mrs.
Isla Youngdahl of Marquette.
Beth and Clifton were both pilots for many years
and did a lot of traveling in their plane.
Clifton is the son of Roy and Doris Manwarren,
Lyons, and Beth is the daughter of Ernest and Mabel McAllaster, also of
Lyons.
Survivors include one daughter; two grandchildren;
two brothers, Keith Manwarren, Olathe, and Marvin Manwarren,
Mosslanding, California.
Funeral and burial services were held Saturday,

Greg Andrew Larson ~ 1977 - 2001
Greg Andrew Larson, 24, Marquette, passed away at his
home Saturday evening, September 22, 2001, after a long battle with
cancer.
Greg was born August 4, 1977, at Garden City, Kansas,
son of Brion and Nancy (Shafer) Larson.
He moved with his family to Marquette from Holcomb, Kansas
in August of 1987. He attended Marquette Elementary School
and was a 1996 graduate of Smoky Valley High School,
Lindsborg. Greg was a student at Hutchinson Community College
and had been employed as a security guard for Target
in Hutchinson.
Greg was a 2nd Degree Black Belt in American Karate.
He was a member of the USA Christian Karate Association and the
Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette. He was a talented
musician and played drums for the band, "Old Dogs and a Pup", of
which his father Brion was also a member.
Greg was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles
Larson.
Survivors include his parents, Brion and Nancy Larson,
Marquette; two sisters, Jolene Larson and Anna Larson, both of
Marquette; one brother, Rob Larson, Marquette; grandparents,
Blanche Larson, Marvin Shafer and Norma Shafer, all of
Garden City, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday,
September 26, 2001, at Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, with Pastor
Larry Cross officiating. Burial will be in the
Lutheran Cemetery, west of Marquette.

Oscar Bret Odell ~ 1914 - 2001
Oscar Bret (Doc) Odell, son of Orville and Bretta Marshall
Odell was born August 19, 1914 in Union Township, rural Scandia
and died September 17, 2001, at the Republic County Hospital.
He was 87.
Oscar received his education at Center Post Elementary
School, graduated from Republic High School in 1932 with a normal
training teachers certificate and graduated from California
Equipment Schooling in 1962.
He enlisted in the CCC for two years and was stationed
in Minnesota. He returned to Republic and became a gas transport
driver, next he purchased a gas station and a year later
he leased his station and became a Santa Fe Bus driver. He farmed
near Scandia.
In 1962 the family moved to Belleville and Oscar went
to work for Reece, Harwood and Moe as material foreman and Reece
Construction Company, Scandia and then Stone Construction
Company, Belleville. After retirement, he worked for Mike
Kasl, Belleville as a small engine mechanic.
He was an active member of the Scandia Methodist Church,
Sunday School Superintendent and Board Member. He was
Swine project leader for Sherdahl Boosters 4-H Club.
He received the Soil Conservation Bankers Award in 1951. He
became a member of the First United Methodist Church,
Belleville. He was a former member of the Belleville Elks Lodge,
Belleville Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge, Concordia.
He was united in marriage to Edith Lorene Stephenson,
Belleville, on June 1, 1941 and to this union four children were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister,
Vera, and two brothers, Glenn and Bennie.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, Ronald Odell,
rural Lindsborg, John Odell, Scandia, and Dan Odell, Canyon, Texas; one
daughter, Janice L. Labbe, Holton; one sister, Marian
Turner, Belleville; twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September
20, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, with
Rev. Bill Brazil officiating.
Interment was in the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville.

Dorothy Larson ~ 1924 - 2001
Dorothy Larson, 77, Marquette, passed away Thursday,
September 6, 2001, at the Salina Regional Health Center.
She was born August 7, 1924 at Mankato, Kansas,
daughter of Leonard and Alvena (Vollmers) Clevenger.
On January 25, 1947, she was united in marriage
to James Harris Larson at Marquette. Dorothy attended Brown Mackie
College and worked for an insurance company prior
to her marriage. After her marriage to Harris, she was a homemaker.
She was a very active volunteer and member of
the Marquette Women's Literary Club, Q & E Club, Marquette Town and
Country Club, and the Marquette Senior Center.
She was a faithful member of the Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, where
she served as Treasurer for WELCA.
Preceding her in death were her parents and husband,
James Harris, who passed away in 1974.
Survivors include two daughters, Vickie (Jim)
Savinski, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Marice (Kenny) Beneda, Wilson; and
three grandchildren, Sara (Brian) Tobish, David
Savinski, and Emily Beneda.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday,
September 10, 2001, in the Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, with
Pastor Larry Cross officiating.
Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery, west of Marquette.
Memorials may be made to the Elim Lutheran Church.

Larry A. Allen ~ 1934 - 2001
Larry A. Allen, 66, Wichita, passed away
Monday, September 3, 2001, at Wichita.
He was born September 4, 1934, at Portland, Oregon.
He was a retired music teacher and substitute teacher. He retired
from Johns-Manville, McPherson, after 17 1/2 years
of service. He was a former band instructor at Marquette in
the
1970's when he and his family were residents.
Survivors include three sons, James L. Allen,
New York, David L. Allen, McPherson, and Steven L. Allen, Galva; one
brother, Kenton Allen, Wichita; one sister, Karen
Miller, Wichita; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday,
September 6, 2001, at Harmony Christian Church, McPherson. An
additional service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday,
September 7, at the Central Community Church, Wichita. Burial was
private.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wichita or
Grace Allen Educational Fund. Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home,
McPherson, was in charge of arrangements.

Maia I. Taylor ~ 1931 - 2001
Maia I. Taylor, 70, Salina, passed away Saturday,
September 8, 2001, at Salina, Kansas.
She was born Maia Ivanavna Chernock on August
1, 1931, at Manhattan, New York. She had been a nursing assistant
for
many years, retiring in 1998. She and her
family were former Marquette residents.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin
(Al) Taylor, in 1998, and one grandson, Jarrod Hanchett, in 1997.
Survivors include two sons, John C. (J.C.) Taylor,
and Keith D. Taylor, both of McPherson; three daughters, Sherri Biggs,
Plymouth, Minnesota, Sonia Renee' Taylor and Shelley
Hanchett, both of Salina; one brother, John Chernock, Salina; and
seven grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. Monday,
September 10, 2001, at the All Saints Church, 2818 Scanlan Ave.,
Salina. A private interment was held at
the Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Regis Marie Porter ~ 1930 - 2001
Regis Marie Porter, 71, Geneseo, passed away Monday,
September 3, 2001.
She was born Regis Marie Gustus on July 11, 1930,
at Geneseo, daughter of Fred and Mary Gustus.
She was a homemaker and a seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, Howard Wayne Porter in 1978; a son, Dickie Wayne; three
brothers, Calvin Gustus, Wayne "Rusty" Gustus,
and Victor Gustus; one sister, Bessie Haverfield; and three grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Ray Porter and
Darold Gene Porter, both of Geneseo; two daughters, Ann Murphy,
Geneseo, and Trina Marie Lawless, Galva; one brother,
Fred "Leroy" Gustus, Velma, Oklahoma; three sisters, Pauline
Schriner, Culver, Rosella Nelson, Kanopolis Lake,
and Elaine Nelson, McPherson; six grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday,
September 7, 2001, at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial was in the
Marquette Cemetery, north of Marquette.
