Lois J. Rupert
1946 - 2001
Lois J. Rupert, 54, rural Beverly,
passed away Friday, April 20, 2001, at
her home.
Lois was born August 7, 1946, at Salina, Kansas,
daughter of Eldon and Julia
(Schwerdtfager) DeWitt. She was a graduate
of Marquette High School, and
had lived at rural Beverly for 21 years, moving
from Salina. She was a
registered nurse at Asbury Hospital in Salina,
and was a member of St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, Lincoln.
She was preceded in death by her father, Eldon
DeWitt.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry, of the home;
two daughters, Julie
Reilly, Wichita, and Amy Fisher, rural Marquette;
her mother, Julia DeWitt,
Hutchinson; three brothers, Jim DeWitt, Wichita,
Kenny DeWitt, Salina, and
Tom DeWitt, Falun; and one sister, Linda Crane,
Buhler.
A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday,
April 24, 2001, at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, Lincoln, with Rev.
Ralph Aschenbrenner
officiating. Private family burial was in
the Excelsior Cemetery, southwest
of Marquette.
Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice
of Salina.
Olson's Funeral Home, Marquette, was in charge
of arrangements.

Luciano Torres
1931 - 2001
Luciano (Lucie) Torres, 69, East Chicago, Indiana,
formerly of Marquette,
passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001.
He was born July 18, 1931 at Salina, Kansas, son
of Anastacio and Carrie
Torres.
He graduated from Marquette High School in 1951,
and later that same year
joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for
four years. In 1960, he was
united in marriage to his wife Emma at Monterey,
Mexico.
He was employed for 30 years with Inland Steel
Company, East Chicago,
Indiana, until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three
brothers, Gregorio,
Felipe, and Vidal.
Survivors include his wife, Emma, of the home;
two sons, Gus and Ernie; one
daughter, Adriana, all of East Chicago; two brothers,
Anthony (Tony) Torres,
East Chicago, and Anastacio (Andy) Torres, Jr.
and wife, Judy, Belle Plaine,
Kansas; one sister-in-law, Barbara Torres, East
Chicago; a number of nieces
and nephews.
A funeral mass was held Saturday, April 7, 2001
at Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church, East Chicago, with the Rev. Juan Gonzalez
officiating. Burial was
in the St. John Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana.
Memorials went to Hospice located in East Chicago.

Ronald E. Phillips
1931 - 2001
Ronald Eugene (Ron) Phillips, 60, Marquette, passed
away early Thursday
morning, April 19, 2001, at his home.
Ron was born August 9, 1940 at Abilene, Kansas,
son of Wayne and Georgia
Phillips.
His education included attending Bethany College
at Lindsborg.
On August 4, 1979, he was united in marriage to
Verna Graham at Marquette,
Kansas. Ron had previously lived in McPherson
where he was employed as a
truck driver for Certainteed Corporation.
He was a dealer in antiques and collectibles.
His hobbies included
woodworking and a fascination of the computer
world.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Verna, of the home;
one step-son, Todd Graham,
Marquette; one step-daughter, Andrea Willems,
Marquette; four
step-grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Graham,
and Brandi and Whitney
Willems, all of Marquette.
A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday,
April 23, 2001, in the
Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, with Pastor Larry
Cross officiating.
Burial was in the Marquette Cemetery, north of
Marquette.
Memorials may be made to the Marquette Ambulance
Service or the Marquette

Eula M. Spohn 1924 - 2001
Eula Marie Spohn, 77, Marquette, passed away Wednesday,
April 4, 2001, at
Riverview Estates, Marquette, where she recently
became a resident.
Eula was born January 8, 1924 at McPherson, Kansas,
daughter of Ralph and
Nellie (Borders) Spohn.
She was a retired registered nurse and a graduate
of the University of
Minnesota. She also had a degree in social
work. She moved to Marquette 15
years ago coming from Kansas City, Kansas.
She was a talented artist who
enjoyed painting, tole painting, and wood carving.
She loved circus clowns
and enjoyed calliope music of which she was a
collector.
Memberships include Elim Lutheran Church, National
Tole Painting
Association, the Marquette Wood Carvers,
and Marquette Town and Country
Club.
Preceding her in death besides her parents was
a brother, Leo Spohn.
Survivors include one sister, Ebba Nelson, Marquette;
one sister-in-law,
Helen Spohn, Marquette; nine nephews, Lawrence
(Saundra) Spohn, Barry
(Carylee) Nelson, Morris (Gayle) Nelson, Linn
(Lou) Nelson, all of
Marquette; Ross (Effie) Spohn, Scott City; Cary
(Pauline) Spohn, Liberal;
Raymond Spohn, Daytona, Florida; Doyle (Pat) Spohn,
Holton; Kale (Kelly)
Nelson, Fort Scott; many great-nieces and nephews;
and many
great-great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday,
April 6, 2001, in the Elim
Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry Cross officiating.
Private family
inurnment will be held at a later date.

Ruth A. Underwood 1915 - 2001
LINDSBORG Ruth A. Underwood, 85, Lindsborg,
passed away Wednesday, March
28, 2001, at the Salina Regional Health Center,
Santa Fe Campus, Salina.
She was born on November 7, 1915, at Delmore Township,
New Gottland, Kansas,
daughter of Fred W. and Christine (Bodine) Peterson.
She was a former secretary for Smoot Grain, Salina,
and was a resident of
Lindsborg since 1946, moving from Hawaii.
On June 19, 1942, she married Dale R. Underwood
in Baltimore, Maryland. He
died August 15, 1977. She was a member of
Trinity United Methodist Church,
a charter member of the 99 Flying Club and the
Marquette Town and Country
Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Survivors include a son, Gary Underwood,
Lindsborg; a daughter, Carole
Gilmore, Palm Desert, California; one sister,
Mildred Lillian, Marquette;
and one granddaughter, Melanie Gilmore, San Diego,
California.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday,
April 2, 2001 at the
Hays-Christians Funeral Home Chapel, Lindsborg,
with the Rev. David Smith
officiating. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery,
Lindsborg.
Memorials may be given to the Trinity United Methodist
Church, Lindsborg
Community Hospital, both of Lindsborg, or the
American Heart Association, in

Kenneth Florian Holm 1911 - 2001
SALINA Kenneth Florian Holm, 89, Salina,
passed away Sunday, April 1,
2001, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina,
Kansas.
He was born September 8, 1911 at Marquette, Kansas,
son of Carl and Ellen
(Nyberg) Holm. He was one of a set of triplets
which included his brother
and sister, Keith and Kathryn.
He grew up in Marquette and graduated from Marquette
High School in 1931.
He loved sports and participated in football,
basketball and track. He was
a K-State fan, holding season football tickets
from 1962 until 1994.
He married Ethyl Burnison at the Elim Lutheran
Church parsonage in Marquette
on November 25, 1934. He was also baptized
and confirmed at Elim. The
couple were residents of Salina since 1941.
Ethyl passed away on April 19,
1997.
Their first child, Janet, was born in 1938, and
the second, Ron, in 1943.
Kenneth retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone
Company in 1974, after 43
years.
Also preceding him in death were two sisters,
Kathryn, and Helen, and one
daughter, Janet Pearce.
Survivors include a son, Ron (Marsha) Holm, Plano,
Texas; one brother, Keith
Holm, Tulsa, Oklahoma; one sister, Romeyn Dove,
Andover; five grandchildren,
Julie Pearce, Grand Prairie, Texas, Jeff (Sherry)
Pearce, Lenexa, Jill
Pearce, Kansas City, Melanie (Chris) Young, Louisville,
Kentucky, and Nathan
Holm, Abilene, Texas; and one great-granddaughter,
Alexis Pearce.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 3,
2001, in the Immanuel Lutheran
Church, Salina, Pastor Loren Mai officiating.
A private family burial
preceded the memorial service in the Lutheran
Cemetery, west of Marquette.
Memorials may be sent to the Immanuel Lutheran
Church, Salina. Olson's
Funeral Home, Marquette, was in charge of arrangements.
