Katherine Anderson, 91 of Griffith, Indiana, passed away this morning
of October 30th, 2002. She was born, Barbara Katherine Hotinski, December
4, 1910 in Hammond, IN the daughter of Frank and Elsie (Djenka) Hotinski.
Katherine attended school in Hammond, IN where she graduated from Hammond
High in 1929. She worked at the courthouse in Hammond after graduation.
She also worked at Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition in 1933.
On September 23, 1932, Katie married Raymond Anderson. They moved to
Griffith in 1941. She loved Griffith and volunteered in many community
organizations. She was a member of Griffith United Methodist Church, Methodist
Women, and former Sunday school teacher. She had been a member of the Garden
club, Grandmother's Club, Historical society, and was a Girl Scout Troop
Leader. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Griffith and played organ
for the Chapter for many years. Katherine loved her family, her gardening,
and playing the organ and piano. The joy and ease in which she would break
into song, will be truly missed.
Survivors include four sons and one daughter, Paul (Elva) of Las Vegas,
NV, Howard (Terry) of Griffith, Byron (Jean) of Morton Grove IL, Oscar
(Linda) of Griffith, and Bernice (Steve) Labus of Oshkosh, WI; seven grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; and her sister, Irene Zarndt of Griffith. Katherine
was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, grandson Kyle Patrick, and
three sisters, Bessie Scully, Helen Tchalo, and Elsie Rauen.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 11:00am
at the Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 242 N. Griffith Blvd., Griffith, IN with
Rev. James Armstrong, officiating. Burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary,
IN. Friends may call at the funeral home, Friday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9pm. With
an Eastern Star Service at 7:30pm.
Walter F. Baisley

Walter F. Baisley, 79, of East Chicago, passed away on Friday, October
25th at St. Catherine Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Maria G. Baisley,
of 56 years of marriage; three sons, John (Irene) Baisley of Garland, TX,
Frank (Maria) Baisley and Victor Baisley of East Chicago; daughter, Nora
Baisley of West Palm Beach FL; half-brother, Arturo (Irma) Rangel and half
sister, Beatrice (Porfirio) Bernal; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth, Freedom,
Steven, Erica, George, Michael, Vanessa and Bianca; and seven great-grandchildren;
Brittany, Alfredo, Angelo, Alexia, Julian, Delilah and Daniel. Preceded
in death by mother, Beatrice Bernal and sister and brother-in-law, Elena
and Julian Pena.
Cremation was held October 28, 2002. A Memorial Service will be held
at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, East Chicago, on Saturday, November 2,
2002 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Juan Gonzalez, C.PP.S. officiating. All
family and friends are invited to attend.
Mr. Baisley was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 22,1923. Retired
from Champion Rivot Company in East Chicago. He was a Veteran of World
War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatres. He was in
Company A, 376th Infantry and earned a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and

Edward Bednarek, age 82, of Hegewisch, passed away Wednesday, October
30, 2002. He is survived by a son, Alan CPD (Therese CPD) Bednarek; a sister,
Carol (late Dominic) Caporale and two grandsons, Jeff and Brian. Preceded
in death by his wife, Virginia, two brothers, Steve Bednarek and Albin
(Reggie) Bednarek and a sister, Sophie (late John) Jamrock.
Services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. from the
Opyt Funeral Home, 13350 Baltimore Ave. Chicago, to St. Columba Church
for 9:30 a.m. Mass. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation Sunday,
2:00 to 9:00 P.M. Mr. Bednarek was retired from Pullman Standard in Hammond
and was a WWII Navy Veteran.
Walter Eugene Baker
Hammond / Lansing
Walter Eugene Baker, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2002
in Hammond, IN, where he was born November 23, 1919, to Walter and Mary
(Giles) Baker. Gene graduated from Hammond Tech in 1938. Served in the
CCC's creating national parks in Oregon, then joined the Army as a Paratrooper
when WWII broke out. He served in the 503rd Parachute Infantry during the
Campaigns in Noemfoor Island and Corregidor. He was awarded a Silver Star
and three Bronze Stars. After an Honorable Discharge he returned to work
at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. He married Bettyanne Lochte on August
23, 1945 in Chicago. Betty and Gene moved to Lansing, IL. where they lived
for more than 50 years. After 42 years at Youngtown, Gene retired in 1981.
He and Betty enjoyed a long busy retirement. They traveled around the United
States and Canada and enjoyed camping and fishing. They attended many reunions
of the 503rd over the years. They were married for 57 years, had four children,
nine grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. G

Lena Gilfillan of Merrillville, IN, Charlotte Baker and Amanda Baker of

of Ft. Collins, CO. A new grandson is due in March of 2003 to Mike and
Lisa. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Beryl Rhoads-Lloyd and

and Lottie Lochte and their daughters, Maureen (Stan) Kuzniar and Family
and Karen Lochte; his nieces: Darlene (Frank) Urbanczyk, Jackie (Kevin)

their families. Walter was
a Cub Fan all of his life. He loved to garden and loved animals, especially
cats.

29, 2002. She is survived by loving son, Sheldon (Beulah) Tucker of Griffith;
three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by loving husband Thomas in 1995.

Tommy Companik was born on June 6, 1937, in East Chicago IN and was
a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. A member of the St. John the

with over 25 years of service. He was an avid sports fan, marathon runner

October 30, 2002. Betty and her husband Ed worked the Odell-Smith Jewelry
business together. Through the years they enjoyed dining in the company
of good friends in many restaurants. Betty was preceded in death by her
son, Dean "Butch" Edstrom. Survived by her husband, Ed Edstrom of Hobart;

Central School Corporation and had been the Cisco class teacher at Rensselaer.
He was formerly employed at Roeing Corporation in Lafayette. Bill was a
9 year veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the Goodland Lion's Club and
a member of the First Christian Church in Rensselaer.

away on Thursday, October 31, 2002 under Hospice Care. She is survived
by her husband of 60 years, Joseph Grzywacz; one daughter, Cynthia (Charles)
Esler of Chicago, IL; two sons, Thomas (Jane) Graly of Berkely, CA and
Daniel Graly of Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister, Adele (Joseph) Kray of Hammond;
four grandchildren, Michael Esler, Joseph Graly, Marcus Graly and Paul
Graly; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents,

Evelyn was a member of St. Casimir Church and past president of the
St. Casimir Ladies Rosary Society, who will pray the rosary Friday at 3:00
p.m. She was a homemaker and skilled in the art of crochet, needle-point
and bread making. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Memorial
