Dorothea Beckmann (nee Schmelter), age 93, of Merrillville, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002, at her home. Survived by four daughters: Madelyne (late Robert) Stalbaum of San Pierre, IN, Jo Anne Beckmann of Washington, IL, Marjorie (Gerald) Doty of Crown Point, IN and Lorraine (John) Uzubell of Munster, IN; one son, Donald (Ursula) Beckmann of Syracuse, IN; son-in-law, Laurence Saberniak of Crown Point; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters Marie (Anthony) Carmoli of Latham, N.Y. and Lucille (Francis) Bieker of Crown Point; brother, Raymond (Mildred) Schmelter of Crown Point. Preceded in death by her husband Leo, daughter, Dorothy Saberniak and two brothers, Carl and Robert Schmelter.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Geisen Funeral Home, and 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Crown Point, Msgr. Don Grass officiating. Burial, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Friends may call at the Geisen Funeral Home, 109 North East St., Crown Point, IN on Sunday November 3rd, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Mrs. Beckmann was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and Church Choir. She operated, along with her husband, the family grocery store in both Cedar Lake and DeMotte. She was active in the Business and Professional Women's Association in DeMotte. Memorials may be given to St. Mary Catholic Church.
James D. Bertino
Merrillville / Gary
James D. Bertino, age 91, of Merrillville, formerly of Gary, passed away at the Franciscan Home in Crown Point on Friday, November 1, 2002. He was born on August 27, 1911 to Dominick and Margaret (nee Perucca) Bertino in Collinsville, IL. He was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church and the Ookie Flying Club. He was a Veteran of the Army Air Corps where he served as a B-17 mechanic in England during WWII. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Jim" by everyone at Phil & Son Locksmith in Crown Point. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Clementine (Tina) in 1992 and brother, Dominick Bertino, Jr. He is survived by two sons, Rev. Dominic V. Bertino of Hobart and James J. Bertino of Merrillville; daughter, Margaret (William) Coulehan of Crown Point; sisters-in-law, Stella (Don) Sims of Hobart and Margaret Bertino of FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. DIRECTLY at St. Bridget Church in Hobart, by Rev. Dominic Bertino and priests of the Diocese of Gary. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 9:00 A.M. until time of Mass. Interment, Calumet Park Cemetery. Patricia (Trask) Blackman
Patricia Blackman (Trask), age 52, of Hobart, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2002. Survived by son, Michael Moore of Hobart; two grandchildren, Devon and Cody Moore; brother, Bruce Blackman of Boca Raton, FL and special friend, Pat Mason of Hobart. Preceded in death by parents, Viola and Norman Blackman.
Pat was a registered nurse at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart since 1986 and was a passionate lover of animals. She was a loving, caring and very special person who always put others first. Everyone who knew Patty truly loved her.
Friends may call at the Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service, 6360 Broadway, Merrillville, IN on Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Richard Alan Blossom "Rick"
Richard Alan "Rick" Blossom, age 43, of Valparaiso, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2002 at his home. On October 16, 1959 he was born in Valparaiso, the son of Robert Blossom and Vivian Brown Blossom. Rick was united in marriage to Jackie Spencer on June 12, 2002 in Valparaiso. A graduate of Valparaiso High School, he also graduated from Ball State University. He was a self employed architect/builder. Rick attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and was active with the Habitat For Humanity where he helped with building and getting donations. He enjoyed kayaking, piloting his own airplane, Tae Kwon Do and also loved sitting on the sofa eating popcorn and watching TV with his wife. Survivors include his wife: Jackie; one step-daughter: Shasta (Joe) Oelling; his mother: Vivian Blossom and one grandson: Maxwell Oelling, all of Valparaiso; his father: Robert Blossom of Florida; three brothers: Robert Blossom of Valparaiso, Ronald Blossom of Las Vegas, NV and Randy Blossom of Glen Ellyn, IL;
two sisters: Vicki (Jeff
) Wasemann and Violet Blossom, both of Valparaiso; his in-laws: Robert and Arlene Spencer of Chesterton.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Stephen Bongard officiating. Cremation will take place at Angelcrest Crematory in Valparaiso. Memorial visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso, IN. Geraldine C. Fennema, age 76, of Lansing, IL passed away on Friday, November 1, 2002. Survived by husband, Bud (Albert); son, Larry (Eva); daughters, Bonnie (Charles) Olentine and Amy (fiance, Brian Hackert) Fennema; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Preceded in death by sons Glen and Brian.

Frank J. Filewicz, age 83, of Dyer, Indiana, formerly of Lansing, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2002. Beloved Husband of Joan, for the past 61 years. Frank was the last remaining sibling of 12 brothers and sisters. He was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Betty L. Graham, age 72, of Munster, formerly of Hessville, Dyer, Phoenix, AZ and Glendale, AZ, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Munster Med-Inn. Mrs. Graham was born on December 2, 1929 in Buckeye, TN, the daughter of the late Leonard and the late Ruth Harris. Mrs. Graham is survived by two sons, William E. Jr. (Debra) Graham of St. John, David Scott (Pamela) Graham of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Elaine (Dennis) Aker of Hammond and Kathy (Terry) Shadley of Portage; two brothers, Charles (Pauline) Harris of Beverly Hills, FL and Carl (Donna) Harris of Longmont, CO; two sisters, Lucy (Glen) Cox of Phoenix, AZ and Marilyn (Charles) Clark of Winchester, TN; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Alan, a brother, Donald Harris and her very special friend, Don.
Friends may call on Sunday, November 3, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN. A memorial service will take place Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Kenneth Svehla, Pastor of the Church of God, Downers Grove, will officiate.
Mrs. Graham was employed by Saint Margaret Mercy Hospital, Dyer, The Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus, Merrillville, K-Mart, 35th Ave. and Greenway, Phoenix, AZ, as well as Frye's Supermarket, Phoenix, AZ.
JoAn Hendricks, age 70, of Lake Station, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. She is survived by five children: James L. Hendricks of Indianapolis, Diana (John) Baldner of Merrillville, Debbie (Jeff) Leathers of Indianapolis, Dora (Jeff) Stigall of Florida and Delana (James) Markos of Lake Station; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Loveless of Nevada. Preceded in death by husband Stewart, in 1997.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. from the Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Sean Doyle officiating. Burial, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville. Friends may meet with the family on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (two blocks south of Ridge Road), Highland.
Mrs. Hendricks was active in the Pentecostal Church.

Dean J. Johnson, age 47, a long time Valparaiso resident, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. Dean was employed at NIPSCO as a fleet mechanic. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church. Dean enjoyed rock climbing, skiing and riding his Harley. He is survived by his wife, Tamara (nee Moore); parents, Robert O. and Betty Ann (nee smith) Johnson of Lake Station; two brothers, Kenton Johnson of Valparaiso and Jay W. Johnson of Darien, Illiois; one sister, Ruth (Robert) Jones of Portage; three nephews; Robert Jones II of California, Ryan (Christy) Jones of Portage and Montana Johnson of Darien, Illinois; one great niece, Victoria Jones of Portage; one great-nephew, Andrew Jones of Portage; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Mavis Moore of Portage; sister-in-law, Gayla Moore of Chesterton. Preceded in death by grandfathers, Martin Smith and John Johnson and grandmothers, Anna Marshall and Versa Johnson.
Funeral services will be Monday, November 4, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN, with Rev. Charles Strietelmeier officiating. Cremation will follow at Calvary Crematory. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.

Chris Kingma, age 38, of Bolton, Massachusetts, formerly of DeMotte/Wheatfield area, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the University of Massachusettts Medical Center. He was born on January 22, 1964 in Valparaiso, Indiana, to Jim and Betty (Van Keppel) Kingma. Chris is survived by his wife of 13 years, Brenda (Boelens). Two sons, Matthew and Wyatt, both at home. Parents, Jim and Betty Kingma of Wheatfield. Two brothers, Mark (Linda) Kingma of DeMotte and David (Brenda) Kingma of Texas. Sisters: Joan Keown of Florida and his twin Cathy (Jim) Dykstra of Illinois. Chris was Hydrologist and had received his Masters at U.N.H. and his BS at Calvin College in Michigan. Chris was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Hudson and the Trinity Congregational Church in Bolton.
Friends may call on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at the Boersma Funeral Home, 90 East Grove St., Wheatfield. Services for Chris Kingma will be held at the 1st Christian Reformed Church in DeMotte on Wednesday, November 6, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Robert Tigchelaar officiating. Interment will be in the Holland Cemetery of DeMotte. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be given to the Educational Scholarship Funds in care of Brenda Boelens for the benefit of their sons, Matthew and Wyatt or to the Luke Society at 2204 S Minnesota Ave., Suite 200, Sioux Falls, SD 57105.
Mitzie Michiko Kino
Hobart / Toyonaka, Japan
Mitzie Michiko Kino (nee Uemoto), originally of Toyonaka, Japan, passed away on November 1, 2002. A graduate of Kobe College (Japan), the Eastman School of Music, and the Julliard School of Music, Mitzie was an accomplished classical pianist, talented seamstress, gourmet cook, devoted homemaker, world traveler, loving wife and mother, and loyal friend to all who had the privilege to know her.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dr. George Y. Kino of Hobart, IN; daughter, Dr. Mary M. Kino of San Diego, CA; brother, Dr. Shumpei (Chitose) Uemoto of Toyonaka, Japan; and numerous cherished friends who provided constant encouragement and support during her brief but arduos battle with stomach cancer.
Visitation on Monday, November 4, 2002 from 2:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN. There will be no formal funeral service conducted. Cremated remains will be returned to the family mausoleum in Japan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be submitted in Mitzie Kino's memory to St. Anthony Hospice of Crown Point, IN.
Nikola "Nick" Kovacich
Nikola "Nick" Kovacich, age 80, of Hammond, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2002. He is survived by is wife of fifty-one years, Margaret (nee Zimmerman); two sons, George (Dawn) of Highland and Milan of Hammond; two grandchildren: Nicholas and Mary Kovacich of Highland; brothers, George (Mildred) Kovacich of Munster and Ray (Mary) Mamula of East Chicago; brothers-in-law, Leo (Toni), Bob (Eve), Jim (Peggy), Al and Ben Zimmerman; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Milan and Anica (nee Mamula) Kovacich, brother, Theodore Mamula and sister, Mary Raich.
Nick was a 1941 graduate of East Chicago Washington High School; a U.S. Army Veteran; member of Casimir Pulaski American Legion Post #78 of East Chicago and member of the Serbian National Federation. Services were private. Solan-Pruzin Funeral Home, Schererville/Highland, in charge of arrangements.
