Walter Eugene Baker
Hammond / Lansing
Walter Eugene Baker, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2002 in Hammond, IN, where he was born November 23, 1919, to Walter and Mary (Giles) Baker. Gene graduated from Hammond Tech in 1938. Served in the CCC's creating national parks in Oregon, then joined the Army as a Paratrooper when WWII broke out. He served in the 503rd Parachute Infantry during the Campaigns in Noemfoor Island and Corregidor. He was awarded a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. After an Honorable Discharge he returned to work at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. He married Bettyanne Lochte on August 23, 1945 in Chicago. Betty and Gene moved to Lansing, IL. where they lived for more than 50 years. After 42 years at Youngtown, Gene retired in 1981. He and Betty enjoyed a long busy retirement. They traveled around the United States and Canada and enjoyed camping and fishing. They attended many reunions of the 503rd over the years. They were married for 57 years, had four children, nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Dybala and his wife, Betty. He is survived by his children, Betty (Daniel) Gilfillan of Merrillville, IN, Patrick Baker of Lansing, IL, Lucinda (Bruce Parkinson) Baker of Ft. Collins, CO and Michael (Lisa) Baker of Lansing, IL; his grandchildren are Matthew (Elizabeth) Gilfillan of Valparaiso, IN, Kelly (fiance, Mike Shelton) Gilfillan of Lake Station, IN, Daniel Gilfillan of Logan, Utah, Lena Gilfillan of Merrillville, IN, Charlotte Baker and Amanda Baker of Chicago, Lily Baker Parkinson, Graham Baker Parkinson and Robin Baker Parkinson of Ft. Collins, CO. A new grandson is due in March of 2003 to Mike and Lisa. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Beryl Rhoads-Lloyd and her son, Timothy (Suzy) Rhoads and Family; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Lottie Lochte and their daughters, Maureen (Stan) Kuzniar and Family and Karen Lochte; his nieces: Darlene (Frank) Urbanczyk, Jackie (Kevin) Brown and Robin
(Dennis) Buskiewicz and their families. Walter was a Cub Fan all of his life. He loved to garden and loved animals, especially cats.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, November 1, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Road, Lansing, IL. Funeral Service Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 12:00 Noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 300 Wirth Road, Griffith, Indiana. Burial will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN, where Walter will be layed next to his wife, Bettyanne.
Patricia (Trask) Blackman
Patricia Blackman (Trask), age 52, of Hobart, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2002. Survived by son, Michael Moore of Hobart; two grandchildren, Devon and Cody Moore; brother, Bruce Blackman of Boca Raton, FL and special friend, Pat Mason of Hobart. Preceded in death by parents, Viola and Norman Blackman.
Pat was a registered nurse at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart since 1986 and was a passionate lover of animals. She was a loving, caring and very special person who always put others first. Everyone who knew Patty truly loved her.
Friends may call at the Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service, 6360 Broadway, Merrillville, IN on Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 1:30 P.M. at the Pruzin Brothers Chapel with Chaplain Jim Stoel, Chaplain Kris Graunke and Chaplain Sister Mary O'Hara officiating. Dorothea Beckmann (nee Schmelter), age 93, of Merrillville, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002, at her home. Survived by four daughters: Madelyne (late Robert) Stalbaum of San Pierre, IN, Jo Anne Beckmann of Washington, IL, Marjorie (Gerald) Doty of Crown Point, IN and Lorraine (John) Uzubell of Munster, IN; one son, Donald (Ursula) Beckmann of Syracuse, IN; son-in-law, Laurence Saberniak of Crown Point; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters Marie (Anthony) Carmoli of Latham, N.Y. and Lucille (Francis) Bieker of Crown Point; brother, Raymond (Mildred) Schmelter of Crown Point. Preceded in death by her husband Leo, daughter, Dorothy Saberniak and two brothers, Carl and Robert Schmelter.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Geisen Funeral Home, and 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Crown Point, Msgr. Don Grass officiating. Mrs. Beckmann was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and Church Choir. She operated, along with her husband, the family grocery store in both Cedar Lake and DeMotte. She was active in the Business and Professional Women's Association in DeMotte. Memorials may be given to St. Mary Catholic Church.
Edward Bednarek, age 82, of Hegewisch, IL, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2002. He is survived by a son, Alan CPD (Therese CPD) Bednarek; a sister, Carol (late Dominic) Caporale and two grandsons, Jeff and Brian. Preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, two brothers, Steve Bednarek and Albin (Reggie) Bednarek and a sister, Sophie (late John) Jamrock.
Services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. from the Opyt Funeral Home, 13350 Baltimore Ave. Chicago, to St. Columba Church for 9:30 a.m. Mass. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation Sunday, 2:00 to 9:00 P.M. Mr. Bednarek was retired from Pullman Standard in Hammond and was a WWII Navy Veteran.

Betty J. Edstrom
Betty J. Edstrom, age 82, of Hobart, passed away at her home on Wednesday, October 30, 2002. Betty and her husband Ed worked the Odell-Smith Jewelry business together. Through the years they enjoyed dining in the company of good friends in many restaurants. Betty was preceded in death by her son, Dean "Butch" Edstrom. Survived by her husband, Ed Edstrom of Hobart; one daughter: Iris (Jack) Jensen of Montana three grandchildren: Chris (Kristin) Pedersen of Alaska, Bill Pedersen of California and Dawn (Albert) Dunn of Alaska; and numous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burns Funeral Home (Hobart) (corner of Rt 51 and 7th Street) on Saturday from 3:00 to 6:30 P.M. There will be a Eulogy conducted by Joe Pisione on Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 6:30 P.M. Services will terminate at the Burns Funeral Home. According to Betty's wishes, interment services on Monday at Graceland Cemetery will be private.

Geraldine C. Fennema, age 76, of Lansing, IL passed away on Friday, November 1, 2002. Survived by husband, Bud (Albert); son, Larry (Eva); daughters, Bonnie (Charles) Olentine and Amy (fiance, Brian Hackert) Fennema; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

Clyde Fields, age 80, of Porter, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, IN. Born in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania on December 24, 1921 to the late Jesse and Eva Capehart Fields. Married Nov. 24, 1946 in Bentleyville, PA to Melva Phennicie who preceded on March 14, 1994. Survived by daughter: Virginia (David) Miller of Frankfort, IN; sister: Zelma Wright of Bentlyville, PA; four grandchildren: Bethany (Mike) Cole of Greenfield, IN, Jonathan Miller of Frankfort, IN, Andrew (Natalie) Miller of Monticello, KY and Paul Miller of Frankfort, IN; five great-grandchildren. Also preceded in death by brother, Howard Fields and sister, Edna.

Mr. Fields was an area resident for 40 years. He was a bricklayer and stone Mason. Retired in 1980 from U.S. Steel. Member of the Audabon Society, Indiana Archaeological Society, Dunes State Park Image Makers and a Charter member of the Duneland Rock Club. Mr. Fields was also a volunteer for the National Lakeshore.

Ronald W. Forsythe, age 63, of Benton Kentucy, formerly of Earl Park and Northwest Indiana, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2002 at his home. Survived by his wife, Patricia. Sons: Kenny (Suzie) Bergman, Ronald (Shannon Snyder) Forsythe, Scott and Ricky Forsythe. Daughters: Tammy Forsythe, Lori (Chad) Krick and Rebecca (Richard) Mack. Stepson: David Garrett. Stepdaughters: Lori Tykol and Mary Bower. 21 grandchildren; brother, Edward (Linda) Forsythe and sister: Deborah (Bill) McNamara. Preceded in death by his parents, William and Nell Forsythe and by his sister, Barb Knudson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 12:00 Noon, at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home with John P. Starr officiating. Betty L. Graham, age 72, of Munster, formerly of Hessville, Dyer, Phoenix, AZ and Glendale, AZ, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Munster Med-Inn. Mrs. Graham was born on December 2, 1929 in Buckeye, TN, the daughter of the late Leonard and the late Ruth Harris. Mrs. Graham is survived by two sons, William E. Jr. (Debra) Graham of St. John, David Scott (Pamela) Graham of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Elaine (Dennis) Aker of Hammond and Kathy (Terry) Shadley of Portage; two brothers, Charles (Pauline) Harris of Beverly Hills, FL and Carl (Donna) Harris of Longmont, CO; two sisters, Lucy (Glen) Cox of Phoenix, AZ and Marilyn (Charles) Clark of Winchester, TN; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Alan, a brother, Donald Harris and her very special friend, Don.

Alvina M. (Evelyn) Grzywacz (nee Furgal), age 81, of Hammond, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002 under Hospice Care. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Joseph Grzywacz; one daughter, Cynthia (Charles) Esler of Chicago, IL; two sons, Thomas (Jane) Graly of Berkely, CA and Daniel Graly of Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister, Adele (Joseph) Kray of Hammond; four grandchildren, Michael Esler, Joseph Graly, Marcus Graly and Paul Graly; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Ambrose and Katherine Furgal, and two sisters, Ludmilla Hupke and Virginia Szymonik.

Evelyn was a member of St. Casimir Church and past president of the St. Casimir Ladies Rosary Society, who will pray the rosary Friday at 3:00 p.m. She was a homemaker and skilled in the art of crochet, needle-point and bread making. Dean J. Johnson, age 47, a long time Valparaiso resident, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. Dean was employed at NIPSCO as a fleet mechanic. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church. Dean enjoyed rock climbing, skiing and riding his Harley. He is survived by his wife, Tamara (nee Moore); parents, Robert O. and Betty Ann (nee smith) Johnson of Lake Station; two brothers, Kenton Johnson of Valparaiso and Jay W. Johnson of Darien, Illiois; one sister, Ruth (Robert) Jones of Portage; three nephews; Robert Jones II of California, Ryan (Christy) Jones of Portage and Montana Johnson of Darien, Illinois; one great niece, Victoria Jones of Portage; one great-nephew, Andrew Jones of Portage; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Mavis Moore of Portage; sister-in-law, Gayla Moore of Chesterton. Alicia Lopez, age 73, of Hammond, IN, died Thursday, October 31, 2002 in St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago, IN. She is survived by five daughters: Maria Elena Reyna of Mexico, Sofia (George) Varga of Hammond, IN, Petra (Delfino) Cruz of East Chicago, IN, Maria (Juan) Guzman of Texas and Rosa (Pablo) Alvarado of Hammond, IN; four sons: Jose Luis Lopez of Texas, Jose Alberto Lopez of Texas, Brigido Lopez, Jr. of Hammond, IN and Julian (Rose) Lopez of Ohio; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters in Texas.
She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.
