William E. Lewellen III
William E. Lewellen III, 75, Pittsburgh, Pa., formerly of Hancock Chapel, died Sunday, Nov. 5, in Pittsburgh.

A native of Uniontown, Pa., he was the son of the late William E. Jr. and Helen Ruth Brenton Lewellen.

He was a retired senior vice-president of finance with USX Corp., a trustee at Bethany (W. Va.) College, and a member of Pitt-DesMoines Inc. board of directors, the Pittsburgh Field Club, the Duquesne Club and the Rolling Rock Club.

He was preceded in death by a son, William E. Lewellen IV.

Survivors include his wife, the former Shirley Kennedy.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 8, after 9 a.m. at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in Hancock Chapel Cemetery. The Rev. James Gentry will officiate.

The family suggests memorial gifts to St. Margaret Memorial Hospital Foundation, 815 Freeport Road, Pittsburgh, Pa., 15215, the American Cancer Society or charity of choice.
 
 

Carl E. Gardner
Carl E. Gardner, 63, Mauckport, died Saturday, Nov. 4, at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon.

A native of New Amsterdam, born Jan. 26, 1937, he was the son of the late William Nelson and Mary Snyder Gardner. He was a retired truck driver for the Harrison County Highway Dept.

Survivors include his wife, the former Phyllis Luther; four sons, Donald R., Adrian A., Herman E. and Harold W. Gardner, all of Mauckport; two brothers, Fred Gardner of New Middletown and Harold Gardner of Martinsville, Va.; four sisters, Margaret Greer, Ethel Jacobs and Lorene Fowler, all of Mauckport, and Joyce Hickman of Shelbyville; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 8, after 8 a.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth. The Rev. John Rose will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Meredith Meyer, Ralph McRae, Danny Hill, Rob Greer, Joe Greer and Loren Fowler.
 
 

Margarette J. Smith
Margarette June Smith, 73, Corydon, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, at New Albany Health Care Center.

A native of Greenfield, born March 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Laura M. Zook Merchant.

She retired from General Electric Co. in Louisville and was a member of Trinity Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her husband, Carl W. Smith; three sons, Carl R. and Rickie L. Smith, both of Corydon, and Master Sgt. Timothy A. Smith of Searcy, Ark.; two daughters, Patricia J. Willhoite of Worthville, Ky., and Melissa Smith of Columbus; a brother, Robert L. Merchant of Marion; a sister, Ruth Proudy of Pennville; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was Friday, Nov. 3, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Rev. David Ledger officiated.

Pallbearers were Christopher Smith, Dameon Smith, Andrew Smith, Michael Smith and Mike McCollum, and Eldon Emily.
 
 

David Sample
David Sample, 43, Elizabeth, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.

He was a self-employed truck driver and a Marine veteran.

Survivors include his wife, the former Lola Wright; three daughters, Tonya, Tiffany and Tabatha Sample, all at home; three stepsons, Josh, Brandon and Jeremie Brown, all of Elizabeth; a stepdaughter, Amanda Brown of Elizabeth; his mother, Delores Sample of Pekin; four brothers, Rick, James, Randy and Harold Sample, all of Elizabeth; a sister, Sharon McGloghin of Salem; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.
 
 

Mary K. Griffin
Mary Kathleen Griffin, 86, Schenectady, N.Y., formerly of Corydon, died Sunday, Nov. 5, at Guilderland Center Nursing Home.

A native of Corydon, born Jan. 11, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Daisy Gleitz. She worked in the grocery and insurance businesses.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Oscar H. Griffin.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Griffin of Voorheesville, N.Y.; a sister, Nellie Kitterman of Corydon; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 10, at the Griffin/Dell'Acqua Home in Voorheesville with a private burial in Parkview Cemetery in Schenectady. Daly Funeral Home in Schenectady handled the arrangements.

Zelma E. Leffler
Zelma E. Leffler, 94, Corydon, died Saturday, Nov. 4, at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon.

A native of Harrison County, born Dec. 20, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lydia Felker Richert. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lanesville.

Survivors include a son, Virgil Leffler of Corydon.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 8, after 8 a.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Cantrell will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Gary, Tim, Charles, Kelly and Jeremy Leffler and Wes Bracey.
 
 

Dale Bowerman
Dale E. Bowerman, 56, Lanesville, died at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at his home.

A native of Jeffersonville, born Jan. 26, 1944, he was the son of Howard E. Bowerman of Lanesville and the late Ann Bonenberger Bowerman.

He retired from CSX Railroad and was a member of Corbin (Ky.) Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors besides his father include his wife, the former Deanna Gehlbach; two sons, Alan D. Bowerman of Cincinnati and Paul E. Bowerman of New Albany; and four grandchildren.

The funeral was Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Georgetown with burial in Wolfe Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Aills and Dr. Garry Pate officiated.

Pallbearers were Virgil Gehlbach, John Gehlbach, Roger Lieber, Dick Jones, Jim Bledsoe and Bo Roaden.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Hospice of Southern Indiana.
 

Jesse F. Ayres
Jesse F. (Fred) Ayres, 70, Corydon, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.

A native of Crawford County, born Nov. 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Raymond and Victoria Green Ayres.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Local 181 in Louisville and a member of American Legion Post 28 in New Albany and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, the former Robin R. Timberlake; a son, Alan D. Ayres of Elizabeth; three daughters, Robin A., Jessica L. and Victoria K. Ayres, all of Corydon; a sister, Laurel Fetz of Ohio; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 9, from 1:30 to 9 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 10, after 9 a.m. at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.

The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in Hyland Cemetery in Mauckport. The Rev. John Rowe will officiate.
