Billie Franklin Carter
MARION -- Billie Franklin Carter, age 70 of Marion, died at 2 a.m. , Friday, February 18, 2000, at the VA Hospital in Marion.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2000, at Meredith-Blue Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Shorty Alsip officiating.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2000, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oddfellows Cemetery in Marion.
Other survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Mike Dial of Marion; step-son, Larry Hellberg of Marion; daughter, Debbie Lemay of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Danara Warrington of California; and son, Doug Carter of Bonnie; grandchildren, Michael Godbey, Kevin Godbey, Terra Godbey, Chad Carter, Brittney Carter, Brian Carter and Ashley Williams; sister, Mary Emma Burnam of Vienna and mother-in-law, Helen Hellberg of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Carter retired from Fabick Machinery and he was a radiator repairman.
He was a member of the Marion American Legion.
MARION -- Herbert Borum, 94, of Marion died at 7 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his residence.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances J. Deaton of Marion; grandson and wife, Rusty and Shandie Deaton of Marion; granddaughter and husband, Tami and Rodney Mitchell of Huntsville, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Colter Deaton and Alyssa Mitchell; cousin, Bob Violett of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; son-in-law, Roy "Ernie" Deaton; brothers Coy, Virgil and George W. Borum; and sister Pearl Borum Liller.
Mr. Borum taught school early in his career before becoming an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance. He retired from Country Companies Insurance. He graduated from Southern Illinois University.
He was an elder member of the Ralls Grove Christian Church in Creal Springs, a lifetime member of the Marion Noon Lions Club, a member of the Farm Bureau and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
He enjoyed cattle farming all his life and was best known for his love of family and the outdoors.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the Meredith-Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Freedom Cemetery south of Marion.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Marion
Noon Lions Club. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Estel Lee Powell
MARION -- Estel Lee Powell, age 67, died Monday, April 9, 2001 at 11:05 a.m. at his residence.
Visitation for Mr. Powell will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 12 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Charles "Country" Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion.
Mr. Powell was born December 28, 1933, in Fisk, Missouri to Lloyd and Minnie (Taylor) Powell.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Jeff Bloodworth of Marion; one son, Estel Lee Powell, Jr. of Madisonville, Kentucky; four sisters, Lillian Powell of Flint, Michigan, Betty Frey of Herrin, Edith Neafus and Ella Tubbs both of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Mr. Powell was a retired truck driver. He was an Army Veteran and a
member of the Marion Eagles.
Etha Nell Thetford
MARION-Etha Nell Thetford, age 88, passed away at 1:05 a.m., Friday, June
15, 2001 at Parkway Manor in Marion.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 17, 2001 at the Meredith-Blue Funeral Home in Marion.
Visitation will be held after 5 p.m.,Saturday, June 16, 2001 at the funeral home.
Burial will be at McKinney Chapel Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the McKinney Chapel Cemetery Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Mrs. Thetford was born August 28, 1912, to Grover and Tina (Adams) Lannom.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Nancy Thetford of Marion and Carl and Lillian Thetford of Sedalia, Mo.; daughters and sons-in-law, Myrl and Joe Upchurch, Retha and Calvin James, and Ruth Hudgens, all of Marion; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great- great-grandchildren and sisters, Orpha Lowery of Creal Springs and Wilma Daniels of Ft. Myers, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son-in-law; two
grandchildren; one sister and five brothers.
Mrs. Thetford was a homemaker. She was of the protestant faith.
GOREVILLE -- Eva Stokes, age 84, died at 6:58 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Wendel and Helen Stokes near Goreville.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Whitnel Funeral Chapel in Goreville. Rev. Jeffrey Bealmear and Rev. R.G. Null will officiate.
Burial will be in the Busby Chapel Cemetery south of Goreville.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. Eastern Star rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. under the auspices of Goreville Chapter #1009 Order of the Eastern Star.

Ernest "Ernie" B. Chance, Jr.
JOLIET -- Ernest "Ernie" B. Chance, Jr., age 63, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001.
He was born in Northern Illinois and educated in Crab Orchard and was a resident of the Joliet area since 1958.
He retired from Caterpillar Inc. and was a U.S. Navy veteran and an avid golfer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Jewell (Parton) Chance of Joliet; two sisters and one brotherr-in-law, Vera and John Imhoff of Ohio and Imogene Watson of Calif. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest, Sr. and Lennie (Smith) Chance and one sister, Gwen Lucik.
Funeral services for Ernest B. Chance, Jr. will be Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home in Joliet. Rev. Gene Parton will officiate. Interment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thrusday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Ray L. Mueller
MARION -- Ray L. Mueller, age 80, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Nov. 15, 2001, at his home.
He is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Carrie Mueller of Marion, Jim and Patricia Mueller of Marion, Kent and Louise Cutsinger of Marion, Jerry and Mary Jo Cutsinger of Pittsburg and Lonnie and Olla Mueller of Thompsonville; daughter, Mebalena Mullins of Marion; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Larry and Gary Mueller; infant son, Terry Mueller and sister, Ruth Mueller.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. The Rev. Arthur Joplin will officiate.
Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Mueller was a coal miner, retiring from Old Ben 25 in 1984. He was
member of UMWA local 9878. He was also a farmer and member of Lake Creek
Masonic Lodge #729. He was a member of the Church of God in Marion.

MARION -- Fern L. Flanagan, age 87, passed away at 4:20 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 at the Brian Center in Weaverville, N. C.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 19, 2001 at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Thompsonville with the Rev. William McDonald officiating. There will be no visitation. Meredith-Blue Funeral Home is in charge ofthe arrangements.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Mrs. Flanagan was of the Baptist faith. She worked as an inspector for
General Motors, retiring after several years. She was a member of the United
Auto Workers Union.

MARION -- Ila Frances Madden-Butler, 70, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Marion, passed away at 1:37 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 at St. Alexius Hospital in St. Louis.
Funeral services will beheld at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the Meredith-Blue Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Dorothy Cook officiating.
Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17,2001 at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Ms. Butler was born Feb. 23, 1931, in Marion to Leonard and Ila Dale (Eason) Madden. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Ila Dale and Walter "Pete" Hendrickson.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Donna and John Boles of Marion; son, Jeffrey Slifka of St.Louis, Mo.; grandchildren, Pam Boles, Heather and Mike Lange and Brian and Winter Boles; great-grandchildren, Luke Groves, Trenton, Miranda and Hunter Lange and Gabby Boles and sister and brother-in-law, Cheri and Donald Duncan of Lafayette, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Caroline Stewart.
Ms. Madden-Butler was a retired security officer. She enjoyed reading
