Melvin K. Peake Sr.
Melvin K. "Poodgie" Peake Sr., 64, of Springfield died at 11:37 a.m.
Sunday
at St. John's Hospital.
He was born May 5, 1928, in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of Malcom and
Dorothy White Peake. He married Marlene Linder in 1950. Mr. Peake was employed
by S.J. Groves and Sons for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member
of VFW Post 755, Operating Engineers Local 965 and was an Air Force veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Marlene; two sons, Melvin K. Jr. and Michael
W., both of Springfield; five daughters, Mrs. Dennis W. (Diana) Lowe Sr.,
Mrs. Stephen M. (Dawn) Blakeman Sr., Theresa "Terry" Rosa, Mrs. Charles
E. (Mary) Horn Sr. and Mrs. Curtis M. (Dorothy) Champion, all of Springfield;
24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Peake
of Indianapolis, Ind., and Walter "Sonny" Childers of Springfield; six
sisters, Lucille Childers of Zephyr Hills, Fla., Cynthia White of Mount
Pulaski, Barbara Hall and Kathleen Nyberg, both of Decatur, and Patricia
Carter and Linda Lappin, both of Clinton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bisch and Son Funeral Home,
with the Rev. Jerene Houser officiating. Burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Martha J. Solomon
Martha J. Solomon, 95, of Springfield died at 6:14 p.m. Monday at St.
John's Hospital.
She was born Jan. 5, 1898, in Parkersberg, W.Va. She married Arthur
William Solomon in 1930 and he preceded her in death in 1954. Also preceding
her in death were a daughter, Edna V. in 1964; and two brothers, William
Walker in 1989 and Charlie Walker in 1948. She was a switchboard operator
for the Illinois State Police for 10 years and the Abraham Lincoln, Leland
and St. Nicholas hotels.
A resident of Springfield most of her life, Mrs. Solomon was a life
member of VFW Auxiliary Post 755, member of American Legion 32, Fraternal
Order of Eagles Aerie 437 and Abraham Lincoln Chapter of Order of the Eastern
Star.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Lee of Springfield; six grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert L. Shelton
Robert Louis Shelton, 66, of Springfield died at 6:23 a.m. Monday at
St. John's Hospital.
He was born Sept. 8, 1926, in Springfield, the son of Louis and Neva
Woolary Shelton. He married Dolores Heinz in 1948. He was a mail carrier
for 37 1/2 years, retiring in 1981. A lifelong resident of Springfield,
Mr. Shelton was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, Tyrian Lodge 333,
Air Force Reserve and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S.
Marine Corps.
Surviving are his wife, Dolores; a daughter, Mrs. Marshall (Nikki Shelton)
Way of Springfield; three sons, Michael L. and Ricky L., both of Springfield,
and Mark A. of Pawnee; five grandchildren; several cousins.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Staab Funeral Home, with

Aileen Gersbaugh
Aileen Rosier Gersbaugh, 79, of Springfield, formerly of Champaign,
died at 7:50 a.m. Monday at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 21, 1913, in Forreston, the daughter of Samuel H.
and Nina Eleanor Rosier Seas. She married Harry Charles Gersbaugh and he
preceded her in death in 1978. She was a graduate of Brown's Business College,
Rockford.
A resident of Springfield for four years and Champaign for 36 years,
Mrs.
Gersbaugh was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Christian Women's
Club, Springfield Art Association and Illinois State Museum Society.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James Randle (Christine Helen) Schick
of Springfield and Mrs. Matthew Walter (Nancy Ellen) Noffke of Hartland,
Wis.; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church,

Sarah E. "Sadie" Livingstone, 84, of Springfield died at 3:20 p.m.
Sunday at Clarkston Court.
She was born Dec. 22, 1908, in Thayer, the daughter of Tony and Mary
Elizabeth Bell Wables. She married William Reid Livingstone in 1926; he
died in 1991. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and four
sisters.
A resident of Springfield most of her life, Mrs. Livingstone was a
member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Maranatha Class at the church.
Surviving are a son, William L. of Springfield; three grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; a brother, John Wables of Lincoln; several nieces,
nephews and cousins.

Etna M. Hemken
Etna M. Hemken, 99, of Springfield died at 4:55 p.m. Sunday at Springfield
Manor Nursing Home.
She was born March 17, 1893, in Montgomery County, the daughter of
Edwin and Elizabeth Johnson Curry. She married Chris Hemken in 1911. He
died in 1964. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Naomi Ryan
and Anna Evans; and a brother, John Curry.
Mrs. Hemken was a member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Melvin "Bud" of Springfield; two daughters, Blanche
Hemken of Sherman and Reba Hagerup of Petersburg; three grandchildren;
a sister, Ruth Smith of Springfield; several nieces and nephews.

Herbert T. Arnold
Herbert Thomas Arnold, 84, of Springfield died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday
at St. John's Hospital.
He was born March 4, 1908, in Champaign, the son of Charles B. and
Melvina Fish Arnold. Preceding him in death were his wife, Dorothy, in
1984; two sons; three brothers; and four sisters.
Mr. Arnold was employed by the state Department of Conservation for
14 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Apostolic House of Prayer.
Surviving are three sons, George R. Sr., W. Dave Sr. and Tom, all of
Springfield; a daughter, Mary Louise Black of Springfield; 13 grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; and a brother, the Rev. Paul of Glasgow, Ky.

Sylvester A. "Jake" Weitekamp, 76, of R.R. 1, Harvel, died at 10:45
p.m. Sunday at Hillsboro Healthcare.
He was born Oct. 19, 1915, in Harvel, the son of John and Josephine
Millburg Weitekamp. He married Mary Eileen Clarke in 1941 in Farmersville.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Margaret Ann, in 1947; a grandson;
and two brothers, Harold and Aloysius Weitekamp.
Mr. Weitekamp was a farmer.
Mr. Weitekamp was a member of St. Maurice Catholic Church of Morrisonville,
Knights of Columbus 1151 of Morrisonville, 4th degree Knights of Columbus
and Msgr. Patrick F. Carroll Assembly of Litchfield.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Eileen; two sons, Thomas A. of Sullivan,
Ind., and Lawrence P. of Morrisonville; four daughters, Sandra Albers,
Joan Keller and Agnes Levi, all of Springfield, and Donna Madonia of Birmingham,
Ala.; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard and Cletus, both of Morrisonville;
and two sisters, Mildred Murphy of Farmersville and Evelyn Klimm of Taylorville.

Morrisonville, with the Rev. John Hannigan officiating. Burial will be

Ivy M. Strebel
Mrs. Ivy M. Strebel, 90, of Mattoon, formerly of Springfield, died
at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Home.
She was born Aug. 25, 1902, in Springfield, the daughter of Charles
and Anna Bauman Kearns. She married Fred Strebel and he preceded her in
death in 1956. She was a file clerk for Fiatallis Manufacturing Co. for
many years before retiring.
Mrs. Strebel was a resident of Springfield most of her life until January
1993 when she moved to Mattoon. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge 13 in
Jacksonville since 1973. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Charles E. Conner, 69, of Marquette Heights died at 10:52 a.m. Saturday
at Pekin Hospital.
He was born March 17, 1923, in Peoria, the son of Bennie and Ethel
Bobo Conner. He married Virginia Schroeder in 1945 in Pekin. He was assistant
vice president for 45 years at Commercial National Bank in Peoria, retiring
in 1986. Mr. Conner was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and he served
in various veterans and civic organizations in Peoria.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; son, David C. of Sherman; two grandsons;
brother, Bennie C. of Peoria.

Mark O. Roberts Sr.
Mark O. Roberts Sr., 82, of Springfield died at 4:19 a.m. Wednesday
at his residence.
He was born April 15, 1911, in Pleasant Plains, the son of Frank and
Charlotte Guyton Roberts. He married Florence Grigsby in 1933. He graduated
from the University of Illinois in 1932 with a bachelor of science degree
in commerce and law. He received his doctor of jurisprudence degree from
the University of Illinois College of Law in 1934. Mr. Roberts entered
the practice of law in 1934 and in 1952 formed a partnership with Maurice
W. Kepner that continued until 1979. He was president of Standard Mutual
Insurance Co. from 1953 until 1992. He became chairman of the board and
was general counsel for the company until his death. He was president of
Riddle Hill Corp., Standard Underwriters Co. and Standard Investment Co.
From 1938 to 1945, Mr. Roberts was legal secretary to Justice Walter
Gunn of the Illinois Supreme Court. In 1945, he was appointed by the state
Supreme Court to the Illinois State Board of Law Examiners and was elected
its secretary-treasurer, serving until 1953. During this period, he was
elected to the Executive Council of the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
In 1953, he was appointed a special assistant attorney general, supervising
downstate Illinois appellate work and special trial work, including cases
briefed and argued before the Illinois and U.S. Supreme Courts.
Mr. Roberts was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sigma Nu social
fraternity, Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, Masonic Blue Lodge, Springfield
Consistory, Ansar Shrine, Illini Country Club, Sangamo Club and Chaine
des Rotisseurs.
His professional memberships included the American, Illinois State
and Sangamon County bar associations. He served as president in 1945 and
was a past secretary of the Sangamon County Bar. He was a member of the
National Association of Independent Insurers, the International Association
of Insurance Counsel, the Illinois Defense Counsel, the Illinois Society
of Trial Lawyers and Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Mr. Roberts was a past member of the Sangamon County Board.
Surviving are his wife, Florence; a son, Mark O. Jr. of Springfield;
three daughters, Nancy Ross Herndon of Chestnut Hills, Mass., Marcia Lewis
Herington of Centerville, Mass., and Florence Grigsby Roberts-Bobay of
Carmel Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Roberts
Morgan; six nieces and nephews; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church,

Aubry Wayne "Slim" Everette, 55, of Springfield, formerly of Lexington,
died at 11 p.m. Tuesday at home.
He was born July 13, 1937, in Howe, Texas, the son of John Henry and
Nanie Minor Everette. He married Mary Rose Neuhaus in 1971. Three brothers
and a sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Everette was park manager for River Oaks Village for 15 years.
Surviving are his wife, Mary R.; two daughters, Glenda Everette of
Breckenridge, Texas, and Nina Everette of Springfield; two sons, John of
Breckenridge, Texas, and Kenneth "Ken" at home; six grandchildren; a sister,

Sophia M. Kopplin, 94, of Oak Terrace Retirement Community, formerly
of Petersburg, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 9, 1898, in Menard County, near Newmansville, the
daughter of John J. and Anna Ritterbush Janssen. She married Frank L. Kopplin
in 1925 in Petersburg; he died in 1969. Also preceding her in death were
two brothers, George and Henry Janssen, and a sister, Tena Janssen.
Mrs. Kopplin was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Petersburg,
Ladies Aid at the church and Menard County Homemakers.
Surviving are a son, Harold of Springfield; four grandsons; three great-grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church,
Petersburg, with the Rev. Robert Low officiating. Burial will be in Rose

Mary Y. Costa
Mary Yvonne Costa, 65, of Springfield died at 2:45 p.m. Monday at St.
John's Hospital.
She was born May 8, 1928, in Quincy, the daughter of John and Lillian
Ritcher Factor. She married Thomas M. Costa in 1951 in Springfield.
Mrs. Costa was a registered nurse. She was a member of Christ the King
Church.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas M.; three sons, Thomas P. of Springfield,
Matthew of Williamsport, Pa., and Daniel of Buffalo; two daughters, Susan
Terril and Rachel Savage, both of Springfield; nine grandchildren; and
several cousins.
Concelebrated funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Christ the
King Church, with the Rev. Donald Meehling and the Rev. Robert Spriggs
officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Kirlin-Egan and Butler

Rebecca Kennedy
Rebecca Kennedy, 78, of Springfield, formerly of Uniontown, Ala., died
at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 6, 1915, in Uniontown, Ala., the daughter of Rose
Austin. She married Walter Kennedy in 1942. A grandson preceded her in
death.
Mrs. Kennedy was a member of Second Timothy Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Walter of Cameron, Ala.; a daughter, Dorothy
Wallace of Springfield; 11 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 39
great-great-grandchildren; a great-great-great-grandchild; an aunt; and
several cousins.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Second Timothy Baptist Church,
with the Rev. Richard B. Maye officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge

Stanley C. Talkington
Stanley C. Talkington, 83, of Springfield, formerly of Beardstown,
died at 4:25 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Hospital.
He was born Feb. 23, 1910, in Modesto, the son of Harry and Laura King
Talkington. He married Nancy Hocking in 1953 in Edwardsville. Preceding
him in death was a son, Jack L. Mr. Talkington was a plumber formerly employed
by Allis Chalmers and Capitol Plumbing and Heating.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy of Beardstown; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Joan)
Cully of Springfield; a stepson, Ray Light of Springfield; a stepdaughter,
Mrs. Richard (Bea) Newberry of Springfield; three grandchildren; and seven
step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral
Home, with the Rev. John Ossola officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery.

James E. Flynn
James Edward Flynn, 76, of Kimberling City, Mo., formerly of St. Louis,
died Monday at his residence.
He was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Mount Sterling, the son of John and Margaret
O'Connor Flynn. He married Roberta Hodgen in 1941. Mr. Flynn was president
and general manager for Wholesale Building Supply in St. Louis for several
years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a past grand knight of
Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Kimberling City Elks Club and Our
Lady of the Cove Catholic Church in Kimberling City, where he was an usher.
Surviving are his wife, Roberta; a son, Patrick E. of St. Charles,
Mo.; three daughters, Sharon Schulze of St. Louis, Mo., Laura Knowlton
of Springfield, Mo., and Elizabeth Siegfried of St. Charles, Mo.; 13 grandchildren;
two brothers, Louis P. and Vincent, both of Springfield; and a sister,
Lucille Ramshaw of Springfield.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Cove Catholic
Church, Kimberling City, Mo., with the Rev. Leonard Chambers officiating.

Betty G. Fryhoff
Betty G. Fryhoff, 70, of St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Anaheim, Calif.,
died Tuesday in St. Joseph, Mo., following a long illness.
She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Cecil and Jessie Montgomery.
She married Albert R. Fryhoff in 1940. Her father preceded her in death.
Mrs. Fryhoff was a self-employed artist in the china field. She was
a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her husband, Albert R.; two daughters, Patricia Brunsman
of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sandra L. Amos of St. Louis; a son, Mark S.
of Deadwood, S.D.; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and her
mother, Jessie Moomey of Springfield.
Services were held Wednesday at Meierhoffer-Fleeman Funeral Home, St.
Joseph, Mo. Private graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Roselawn

Bill V. Wight, 69, of Springfield died at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday at St.
John's Hospital.
He was born June 20, 1923, in Springfield, the son of Clinton and Eva
Lamb Wight.
Mr. Wight was retired from Federated Funeral Directors. He was leader
and manager of the Charles Rogers Orchestra. He was a member of First United
Methodist Church and secretary-treasurer of American Federation of Musicians
19-675. Surviving are his wife, Bette Padget Wight; a daughter, Maribeth
Gebhards of O'Fallon, Mo.; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ellinger-Kunz and Davis Funeral
Home, with the Rev. Roger Rominger officiating. Burial will be in Camp

Carlisle infant Evan T. Carlisle, infant son of Milton Carlisle and
Gaila Matrisch of Springfield, died at 6:33 a.m. Wednesday at his residence.
He was born April 14, 1993, in Springfield. Preceding him in death
were his grandfathers, Merle Carlisle and Robert Matrisch.
Surviving are his parents; a brother, Matthew, at home; three sisters,
Megan, Tabitha and Emily, all at home; grandmothers, Helen Carlisle and
Vivian Matrisch, both of Springfield; great-grandmother, Ruby Kincaid of
Springfield; and several cousins.

Anne E. Corson, 89, of Montgomery, Ala., died Monday at Baptist Medical
Center in Montgomery.
She was born Aug. 28, 1903, the daughter of Orion and Lizzie Ellis
Turner. She married Dr. Wesley C. Corson in 1940; he preceded her in death
in 1968. Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
