Paul P. Pierce, M.D., of Godfrey, died June 4, 1997, in his home. He earned his M.D. degree from the Harvard Medical School in 1939, interned in Kansas City General Hospital, and was an assistant resident in pediatrics in Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 1940 and 1941. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1943-46. Dr. Pierce moved to Alton in 1947 to join Kenneth E. Humphrey, M.D., in a practice that became the Alton Children's Clinic. Edward K. DuVivier, M.D., joined them in 1950. He married Oneida Blaser, who preceded him in death. He married Margaret Shewmaker, who survives. Also surviving are sons, Dr. Paul Pierce of Albuquerque, N.M., and John of Alton; a daughter, Jean Volckmann of Pasadena, Ca.,; step-sons, Walter Shewmaker of Fosterburg, and Timothy Shewmaker of Aurora, Co.; and 10 grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted in Godfrey First United Methodist Church at a later date. Memorials may be given to the church building fund, American Medical Association Education and Research Foundation in Chicago, and to charities of choice. Arrangements are through Elias-Smith in Godfrey.
