Grace R. Colette 
Age 81 of Antioch, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at the Midwestern Regional Hospital, Zion. She was born March 24, 1920 in Chicago, the daughter of the late George and Thora (Thorson) Hofert. On May 7, 1944, she married Frank M. Colette in Chicago and they moved to Lake Shangri-La, Wis. in 1961. In 1968 they moved to North Avenue, Antioch until 1978 when they moved to Marathon, Fla. In 1997 they moved back to Antioch. She was a member of St. Peter Church in Antioch where her husband was a deacon for many years. Grace lived to take care of her "man" Frank, entertain anyone she met with her jokes and stories, and loved to play golf with the ladies. Grace enjoyed cooking and watching those she cared for, eat and eat. Loved by all that met her, she saw the good and beauty in all people, especially children. 

Survivors include her children, Marion (Dal) Colette Macon of Emlyn, Ky., Carol (Charles) Schwenn of Mountainair, NM., Janet (David) Woods, Fran (Reed) Ano and Frank (Melody) Colette all of Antioch; 15 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank on Nov. 3, 2000 and a brother, Alvin Hofert. 

Funeral services with Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 23, at St. Peter Church, Antioch. Interment was at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Friends called at the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch Jan. 22 from 4-8 p.m. and at the church Jan. 23, from noon until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Save the Children, Box 714, Borea, Ky., 40403, in her memory. 

Sophie V. Evert 
Age 75 of Prairie View, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at the Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. 

Surviving are her son, George R. Evert Jr. of Round Lake Beach; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George R. Evert Sr. in 1987. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville. Interment followed at Memorial Park in Skokie. Visitation was held Jan. 20 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory. 

Janet P. Smothers 
Age 81 of Libertyville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at the Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. 

Surviving are three children, Bob (Sharon) Smothers of Libertyville, Judith (Mike) Reichert of Mundelein and Kathleen (Ken) Leiser of rural Mundelein; and six grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wilferd "Bill" Smothers on Dec. 8. 1997. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville. Interment followed at the Highland Memorial Park. Visitation was held Jan. 18 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the intensive care unit at Condell Medical Center in her memory. 

F. Leona McCandless 
Age 86, fomerly of Mundelein, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. 

Surviving are her sons, Raymond (Judith) McCandless of Libertyville and Richard (Jackie) McCandless of Keokuk, Iowa, eight grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Ema Greene and by her husband, George in 1945. 

Private services were held Jan. 18 from the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home in Libertyville. 

Robert S. Sturgis Jr. 
Age 77 of Lake Forest, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 at the Lake Forest Hospital. He was the former owner and founder of Gander Mountain Sporting Goods Store in Wilmot, Wis. 

He is survived by his wife, Marie Sturgis of Lake Forest and many friends. He is preceded in death by his sister, Harriet Bennett. 

Private services were held on Jan. 15 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville. Inurnment was at the columbarium of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest. 

Walter Luszcak Sr. 
Age 93 of Antioch passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Provena St. Therese Medical Center, Waukegan. On Oct. 12, 1940, he married Katheryn Zebro in Chicago and she preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 1985. 

Survivors include two sons, Walter Jr. and Richard, both of Antioch; one daughter, Carolyn (Ronald) Messersmith of Gilbert, Ariz.; a grand-daughter; and two great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents. 

Funeral services with Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 23, at St. Peter Church, Antioch. Interment was at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Antioch. Friends called at the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch, Jan. 22. 

Mary Ann McGrath 
Age 57 of Lake Villa, passed away suddenly, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at her home. She was born June 8, 1944 in Stanley, Wis., the daughter of Milton and Jeanette (Herrick) Simon. Mary came to Lake County, at the age of 12 and has lived in Lake Villa since 1983. She was a homemaker, attended St. Peter Church in Antioch and worked part time at Intermatic in Richmond. On May 27, 1967, she married Thomas C. McGrath in St. Peter Church, Antioch. 

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Jodi (Keith) Unekis of Antioch and Teri (Craig) White of Ingleside; three grandchildren, Tyler, Alex and Corey; her mother, Jeanette Simon of Twin Lakes, Wis.; two brothers, Wayne (Karen) Simon of Lake Villa and Rick (Lynn) Simon of Winona, Minn.; two sisters, Janice (John) Horron of Salem, Wis. and Pam (Jerry) Ray of Lake Villa. She is preceded in death by her father, Milton Simon and two sisters, Donna Gelden and Rita Muggar. 

Funeral services with Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m., Jan. 22 at St. Peter Church in Antioch. Interment was at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion. Friends of the family called at the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch from 4-8 p.m., Jan. 21. Those desiring may make contributions to the Lake Villa Rescue Squad in her memory. 

Leonard John Luber 
Age 84 of Mundelein, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at his residence. 

He leaves his wife, Marian (nee Terrence) Luber and two sons. 

Services and interment were privately held. Arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Ltd., Grayslake. 

Williamette 'Billie' D. Schikora 
Age 70 of Grayslake, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Lake Forest Hospital. 

She leaves her daughter, Catherine (Henry) deGroh of Grayslake; son, Jack Schikora of Grayslake; mother, Pauline Mileske of Fox Lake; grandchildren and her sister. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frederick in 1997 and her son, Thomas Schikora in 1966. 

Friends of the family visited at the Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Ltd., Grayslake on Jan. 20 from 1-5 p.m. Interment and services were held Jan. 21 at Resurrection Cemetery, Justice. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Save-A-Pet Foundation, 31664 N. Fairfield Ave., Grayslake, IL 60030. 

Edward Bernard Royer 
Age 75, a 47-year resident of Round Lake Beach, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in North Chicago. He was born on April 8, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Bernard and Winifred (McCann) Royer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict. During the 1950s, he was employed at the Seaman Body Plant (Div. of Nash-Kelvinator) in Milwaukee, Wis. He retired in 1986 from the Dr. Scholl's 20-year club. In 1989, he was Worshipful Master of Rising Sun Masonic Lodge, A.F.& A.M. in Grayslake. as well as Worshipful Master of Victory Lodge, A.F.&A.M. in Chicago in 1959. He was Worthy Patron of Sorosis Chapter No. 329, Order of the Eastern Star in Grayslake. He is a member of the York Rite Bodies of Palatine, including the Royal Arch Masons Chapter 96, Cryptic Council 46 and Bethel Commandery 36 Knights Templar. 

He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Augustine) of 55 years and 11 months; a son, James (Miriam) Royer; a daughter, Jeanne Royer and a brother, Robert (Marian) Royer of Brook Park, Ohio; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Shaffer and Margaret Oakes. 

Friends and family visited at the Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Ltd., Grayslake on Jan. 22 from 4-9 p.m. Masonic Funeral rites were performed at 7 p.m. Jan. 22, followed by Eastern Star Rites. Private interment at Pinelawn Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wis. Memorials may be made to the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge No. 115 or the Sorosis Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Illinois, both located at 2 Center St., Grayslake, IL 60030. Arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Ltd., Grayslake. 

John 'River John' P. Svitanek Jr. 
Age 78 of Round Lake Beach passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 6, 1923 in New York City, NY, the son of the late, John Peter Svitanek Sr. and Anna Kunik. John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an aviation electricians mate on the U.S.S. Wasp. He was employed as an electrician with the IBEW Local 134 in Chicago until his disability retirement in 1976. He loved hunting, fishing, bowling and his wife, Bettie, in that order. Those who will remember him are his wife, Bettie of 25 years; step-children, Cheryl Contri, Tom (Kathy) Contri; sister, Joan (Phil) Fasano; sons, Dan (Peg) Svitanek and Jeff (Judy) Svitanek and many nieces, nephews and grandchildren; and a very special friend, Gus Nizzi. He is preceded in death by his brother, Joseph; sister, Jean Lagatella and dear daughter, Mary Ann Olson. 

At John's request, there will be no visitation or services. Interment will be held at sea by the United States Navy. Memorials may be given to the Save-A-Pet Foundation, 31664 N. Fairfield Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030 or Easter Seals, 14 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL, 60030. Arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Ltd., Grayslake. 

Rose A. Weiss 
Age 91, a lifelong resident of Grayslake, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center in Lindenhurst. Born March 30, 1910 in Chicago. The daughter of the late, Michael Joseph Filliung and Anna Bernhardt. Mrs. Weiss was a member of the Grayslake Garden Club, the Friendship Club of St. Gilbert and a member of St. Gilbert Catholic Church. 

She leaves her son, Leonard (Patricia) Weiss of Grayslake; grandchildren, Julie (Jeff) Wynveen of Gurnee, Carolyn (Scott) Farnam of Chicago, Kurt (Fiancee, Julie) Weiss of Chicago; great grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jacob, Jessica Wynveen; and numerous friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kurt M. Weiss in 1991. 

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated 11 a.m., Jan. 22 at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, Grayslake. Interment followed at Ascension Cemetery In Libertyville. Friends called at the Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Ltd., Grayslake on Jan. 21 from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Gilbert Vision for the Future Fund, 301 E. Ludmila Kudzin 
Age 62 of Lake Villa, passed away at her home on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002. 

She is survived by her husband, Alexandre; her children, Christina (Glen) Larson of Twin Lakes, Wis., James (Zivile) Kudzin of Madison, Wis. and Nicole (Joseph) Marston of Lake Villa; her mother, Justyna Peterson of Round Lake Beach, her three grandchildren, and her brother. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 22 from Ringa Funeral Home, Lake Villa. A funeral mass was held at Prince of Peace Church, Lake Villa. Interment was at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Libertyville. Visitation of family and friends was held Jan. 21 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be appreciated to the American Cancer Society. 

Adam J. Kausak 
Age 15 of Lake Villa, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. 

He is survived by his parents, Colleen and Donald Kausak; his brothers, Andy and Alex; his grandparents, Marie and John Kausak of Lockport; many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and cherished friends. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at the Ringa Funeral Home, Lake Villa. The funeral mass was held at Prince of Peace Church, Lake Villa. Interment was at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville. Visitation of family and friends was held Jan. 20. Memorials in his name would be appreciated to the SADS Foundation and may be sent in care of the Ringa Funeral Home, Lake Villa. 

Emmett J. Dempsey 
Age 83 of Round Lake Beach passed away on Jan. 16, 2002 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. 

He is survived by his children, Daniel (Anne) Dempsey of Round Lake Beach, and Jennifer (Robert) Sullivan of Iuka, Miss., his grandchildren, Margaret Dempsey and Paul Dempsey; and his sisters. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ramona and his sister. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at Ringa Funeral Home, Lake Villa. A funeral mass was held Jan. 19 at the Prince of Peace Church, Lake Villa. Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Chicago, Visitation of family and friends was held Jan. 19 from 8 a.m. until the time of the services. 

Jack Rhoades 
Former Lake Villa resident and beloved father and grandfather, Jack "Dusty" Rhoades passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002 in Spooner, Wis. 

He is survived by his wife, Olive; four stepchildren, Albin, Olive, Tina and Karla; and a son, Kerry. 

Visitation was held Jan. 18 at the Brown Funeral Home in Minong, Wis. Funeral services took place Jan. 19 at the Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. 

LaVern K. Lau 
Age 69 of Round Lake Park, died on Jan. 16, 2002 at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview. 

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Diana (James) Verstege of Round Lake, Donald Lau of Round Lake, Dale (Michelle) Lau of Spring Grove; grandchildren; brothers, sisters and other relatives. He is preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers. 

Visitation of family and friends was held Jan. 19 at the Windridge Memorial Park Chapel, Cary. Funeral services were held at the funeral home with Rev. Lisle Kauffman of Calvary Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary. Memorials to the American Heart Association or the Cancer Society will be appreciated. 

Irene B. Johnson 
Age 81 of Libertyville, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at her home following a lengthy illness. 

Irene was the beloved wife of Joe B. Johnson; loving mother of Barbara (Andrew) Ftacek of Mundelein and Janice (William) Peterson of Buffalo Grove; grandmother of Jennifer Ftacek of Chicago, Mark Ftacek of Mundelein and Karen (Dennis Pierce) Peterson of Brooklyn, NY. She is preceded in death by her son, Keith Johnson and brothers. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Libertyville. Interment was at Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation of family and friends was Jan. 21, at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, Libertyville. Memorial contributions can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in her memory. 

John J. Watters 
Age 70 of Ingleside, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at the VA Medical Center in Hines. 

Surviving are six sons, Jack (Terry) Watters of Sun Valley, Idaho, James (Barb) Watters of Ingleside, Martin (Patti) Watters of Arlington Heights, Stephen Watters and Robert (Tammy) Watters, both of San Francisco, Calif. and Timothy (Laura) Watters of Chicago; 12 grandchildren; his dear friends and former wives, Mary Ann Watters of Arlington Heights and Mary Miller Watters of Warrenville. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Katherine Watters and by a son, Thomas. 

Visitation of family and friends will be at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave., (Route 176), Libertyville, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27 at the funeral home with Msgr. Jack Dalton, officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Bede's Children's Library Fund.
