John M. Flannigan

John M. Flannigan, 74, of McLeansboro, died at 11:13 p.m. on Saturday, November 9th, 1996, at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia. He was a pipefitter for Kaiser Steel in Napa, California.
Mr. Flannigan was born on March 21, 1922, in Blairsville, a son of Carl and Mary (Leathers) Flannigan. He married Opal Ratliff on September 2, 1967. Mr. Flannigan was a corporal in the U. S. Army and served in World War II. He was a member of the McLeansboro American Legion Post 106 and the Carmi VFW Post 3851. He was a member of the First Christian Church of McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, 1996 at the Harre Funeral Home. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro. Graveside burial rites were performed by the McLeansboro American Legion Post 106 Honor Guard.
Mr. Flannigan is survived by his wife, Opal Flannigan of McLeansboro; four daughters, Myrna Jean Borges of Napa, California, Gail Williams of McAllister, Oklahoma, Connie Jones of McAllister, Oklahoma, and Janey Celley of Corvilla, Oregon; one brother Gene Flannigan of McLeansboro; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vada Tudor 
Born May 9, 1921 - Died November 11, 1996
Vada Tudor, 75, of McLeansboro and formerly of Woodlawn, died at 1:43 a.m. on Monday, November 11th, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, Illinois.
She was a retired school teacher having taught in Nashville, Ashley, and Tamaroa, Illinois.
Mrs. Tudor was born on May 9, 1921, in Dahlgren, a daughter of Robert Omer and Carrie V. (Wood) Miller. She married Arlye V. Tudor, who preceded her in death. She was a member of the Retired Illinois Teachers Association.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Wedsday, November 13th, 1996, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Richardson Hill Cemetery in Dahlgren.
Mrs. Tudor is survived by one brother, James C. Hall of Corpus Christi, Texas; three nephews, Fred Hall of Florida, James D. Hall of Memphis, Tenn., and Robert T. "Tom" Miller of Woodlawn.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Evan and John Hall and Robert "Bob" Miller; and one sister, Edna Mae Brown.
Memorials may be made to the Richardson Hill Cemetery Association.

Nora Lee (Cusic) Wheeler 
Born September 29, 1910 - Died November 12, 1996
Nora Lee (Cusic) Wheeler, 86, of McLeansboro, died at 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 1996 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. Mrs. Wheeler was the owner and operator of Nora Lee's Dress Shop for many years.
Mrs. Wheeler was born on September 29, 1910, in Brownsville, Illinois, a daughter of Fred and Laura (Mayberry) Cusic. She was married three times, to Wilburn Beck and Doyle Chastain, who preceded her in death, and Inman Wheeler, who survives. She was a member of the McLeansboro Church of Christ.
Graveside services were at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 1996 at Odd Fellows Cemetery in McLeansboro. Arrangements were made by Harre Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by her husband of 20 years, Inman Wheeler of McLeansboro; one son, Don Beck and wife Sharon of McLeansboro; two grandsons, Marty Beck and wife Mary Jo of McLeansboro, Mark Beck and wife Carmen of McLeansboro; one great-grandson, Kyle Beck of McLeansboro; and one great-granddaughter, Marilee Beck of McLeansboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one sister and five brothers.
Memorials may be made to the McLeansboro Church of Christ and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Wanda May Carraher 
Born May 2, 1913 - Died November 13, 1996
Wanda May Carraher, 83, of McLeansboro, died at 1:23 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 1996 at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center in McLeansboro. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Carraher was born on May 2, 1913, in Hamilton County, a daughter of William H. and Maggie (Campbell) Smith. She married Thomas A. "Red" Carrraher, who preceded her in death. She was a member of the McLeansboro First Baptist Church.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, 1996 at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Rev. Jerry Parmley officiated. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mrs. Carraher is survived by sister-in-law Jean Smith of Taylorville, Illinois, and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers.

Harry G. Benbrook 
Born January 8, 1906 - Died November 13, 1996
Harry G. Benbrook, 90, of New Harbor, Maine., and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 1996, in a Damariscotta, Maine, health care facility.
Mr. Benbrook was born on January 8, 1906, in McLeansboro, a son of Hosea and Louisa (Lee) Benbrook. He graduated from McLeansboro High School in 1928(?) and for many years was a self-employed contractor. In 1921(?), he moved to Massachusetts, where he was employed as a construction inspector and superintendent for 1st Naval District of Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, retiring in 1970. He was a longtime member of the Orphan's Hope Lodge of Masons in Weymouth, Maine, and loved fishing and gardening. He was also known for his musical talent with singing and playing the guitar. He came to New Harbor in 1981.
Graveside funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 1996. at the Antioch Cemetery in McLeansboro. Rev. John Lee officiated. Local arrangements were made through Harre Funeral Home.
Mr. Benbrook is survived by one daughter, Judith Barufaldi of New Harbor; two granddaughters, Nina and Jill Barufaldi of New Harbor; one grandson, Paul Barufaldi of Tremont, Maine; and many nieces and nephews, including Hazel Clark of McLeansboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 53 years Verna (Sues) Benbrook, two brothers and five sisters.

Eugene H. Wheeler 
Born September 21, 1910 - Died November 20, 1996
Eugene H. Wheeler of McLeansboro, died at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired water and electrical plant operator for the city of McLeansboro.
Mr. Wheeler was born on September 21, 1910 in Evansville, Indiana, a son of Douglas and Minne (Farris) Wheeler. He married Violet Russell, who preceded him in death. He attended Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 1996 at Gholson Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro. Graveside burial rites were by American Legion Post #106.
Mr. Wheeler is survived by one son, John Wheeler and wife Carol of Dow, Illinois; one daughter, Linda Dale and Husband Bruce of McLeansboro; four grandchildren, Tammy Sims, Dawn Wheeler, Clint Mosby, and Lukas Dale; and one great-grandchild, Devin Wheeler.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Lucy Marguerite Smith 
Born August 4, 1916 - Died November 22, 1996
Lucy Marguerite Smith of Murphysboro and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, November 22, 1996, at Carbondale Health Center. She was a housewife.
Mrs. Smith was born on August 4, 1916, in Dahlgren, a daughter of Roy Franklin and Nancy Clara (Voliva) Cross. On May 29, 1936, she married Noel A. Smith, who preceded her in death in January 4, 1985.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 1996 at Gholson Funeral Home. Rev. Mark Lee officiated. Burial was in Ten Mile Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith is survived by seven sons, Ronald Lee Smith and wife Margaret of Brush, Colorado, William Robert Smith and wife Jean of McLeansboro, Thomas Eugene Smith and wife Vera of McLeansboro, Clyde Richard Smith of Toledo, Ohio, Dale Louis Smith and wife Evelyn of Chicago, Alan Smith and wife Becky of Hillsboro, Noel Smith Junior and wife Deanne of Murphysboro; one daughter, Mary Horn of Carmi; one brother, James Paul Cross of Vista, California; three sisters, Fern Jines of Forkland, Alabama, Ruby Kirkpatrick of Sun City, Arizona, and Wanda Winkelbauer of Sun City, Arizona; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Molly Lou Smith, sister Flossie Campbell, and brothers Frank and Robert Cross.

Everett E. Johnson 
Born February 15, 1901 - Died November 22, 1996
Everett E. Johnson, 95, of McLeansboro, died at 9:45 p.m. on Friday, November 22th, 1996, at McLeansboro Health Care.
Mr. Allen retired in 1965 as a barber for the state.
He was a member of Corinth Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 1128 AF&AM, both in Macedonia.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Minton of Lake Charles, LA; a son, Walter H. of Hemet, California; two sisters, Goldie Miller of Benton and Dorothy Browning of Anderson, Indiana; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His wife, Floy Pauline (Holt), died in 1989.
Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at Harre Funeral Home, with burial in Macedonia Cemetery.
Beside his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one grandchild.

Carol A. Shasteen 
Born September 26, 1938 - Died November 26, 1996
Carol A. Shasteen, 58, of McLeansboro, died at 7:03 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. She was a homemaker.
She was born on September 26, 1938, in Oak Park, Illinois, a daughter of Fred and Bernice (Weiher) Myrtle. On June 8, 1956, she married Cecil Shasteen in Cook County. She was a member of Temple Missionary Baptist Church in McLeansboro.
The graveside service was 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 1996, at Smith Cemetery near Dale. Revs. Carl Leek and Robert Sefried officiated. Arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Johnnie Shasteen of Cuba, Missouri, David Shasteen of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Darrell Shasteen of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Beverly Riley and husband Don of St. James, Missouri; four grandchildren, Keith, at home, and Andrea, Chip and Bonnie Riley of St. James; and one brother, James Myrtle of Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorthea "Dot" Richardson 
Born September 18, 1901 - Died November 26, 1996
Dorthea "Dot" Richardson, 95, of Dahlgren, died at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at Mt. Vernon Care Center in Mt. Vernon. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in the one-room school systems near Dahlgren for several years.
She was born on September 18, 1901, a daughter of Cloyd and Inez (Linvell) Stull. On August 5, 1923, she married Harry V. Richardson, who died on April 22, 1972.
The funeral was at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 1996, at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren. Rev. Richard McCormick officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She is survived by one son, Virgil Lee Richardson and wife Doris of Dahlgren; five grandchildren, Michael Richardson of Granell, Kansas, Ronald Lee, Gerald, Curtis and Clyde Richardson, all of Colorado Springs; a sister, Ruby Mitchell of Crossville, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Frank and Fred Stull.

Mary Elizabeth Webb

Mary Elizabeth Webb, 70, of McLeansboro, died at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 28, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. She was a secretary for the Hamilton County Home Extension.
She was born on September 14, 1926, in McLeansboro, a daughter of Will and Minnie (Metcalf) Stephens. On February 1, 1947, in Morganfield, Kentucky, she married Kermit M. Webb, who survives. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McLeansboro. She was also a member of the McLeansboro Home Extension and Eastern Star Lodge #704.
The funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 1996, at the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jeff Hurst officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery. Arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Paula Young and husband Bob of Carmi and Linda Gwaltney and husband Bill of Benton; a sister, Audrey Stephens Epperson of McLeansboro; a half-sister, Shirley Reyling Moss of McLeansboro; and four grandchildren, Paul Young of Evansville, Stephanie Young of Carmi, Bill Gwaltney, Jr. of Benton and Kent Gwaltney of Benton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Clairetta Lasater

Clairetta Lasater, 78, of McLeansboro, died at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lasater was born on December 30, 1917, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Frank and Florence (Aydt) Frey. She married Wyatt W. Lasater, who preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Clement's Catholic Church in McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 1996, at St. Clement's Catholic Church. Fr. Alan Ruppert officiated. Burial was in St. Clement's Church cemetery. Arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lasater is survived by three sons, Kenneth Lasater and wife Bobbin of McLeansboro, Robert Lasater and wife Beverly of Decatur, Dennis Lasater and wife Sharon of Willowpark, Texas; two daughters, Donna Arrivo and husband John of Noblesville, Indiana; and Catherine Lasater of Nashville, Tennessee; eigth grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one grandson and two sisters.
