Clara Louise Mitchell

Clara Louise Mitchell, 62, of McLeansboro, died at 7:55 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 14, 1997, at her home. She was a housewife.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1935, in Dahlgren, a daughter of Louis and Clara (Rubenacker) Herzing. On June 28, 1960, she married John T. Mitchell, who survives. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Dahlgren.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert Sefried and Rev. Alan Ruppert will officiate. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery near McLeansboro.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her four sons, John Timothy Mitchell and wife Jane Ann of Mcleansboro, Thomas Mitchell and fiance Pamela of Carmi, Daniel Mitchell and wife Sherri Mitchell of McLeansboro, and David Mitchell, also of McLeansboro; three brothers, Richard Herzing and Floyd Herzing of Mt. Vernon and William Herzing of Dahlgren; two sisters, Betty Tanner of Hurst, Texas, and Mary Winemiller of Dahlgren; four grandchildren, Lauren, Jacob, Logan and Caleb Mitchell; and a dear friend, Tina Mayberry.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and Jim Herzing.

Ivan Nelson 
Born October 20, 1911 - Died December 4, 1997
Ivan Nelson, 86, of McLeansboro, died at 12:52 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at the HealthCare Center in McLeansboro. He was a retired farmer.
He was born on Oct. 20, 1911, in Hamilton County, a son of Joseph and Stella (Rockett) Nelson. He was a former Hamilton County Democrat precinct committeeman for Beaver Creek Township.The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Bro. Larry Woodrow officiated. Burial was in Old Springer Cemetery.
He is survived by two sons, Cecil Nelson and wife Helen of Mt. Zion, Ill., Kenneth Nelson and wife Bonnie of McLeansboro; one daughter, Linda McGill and husband Dennis of McLeansboro; three brothers, Milage Nelson of Dahlgren, Rudolph Nelson of Fairfield; two sisters, Ruby Mayberry of Washington, Ill., and Anabelle Keath of Enfield; four grand-children; and eight great-grandchildren.

Clinton "Sizzy" Smith 
Born April 27, 1929 - Died December 4, 1997
Clinton "Sizzy" Smith, 68, formerly of McLeansboro, died on Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Philadelphia Memorial Hospital im Philadelphia, Pa.
He was born on April 27, 1929, in Hamilton County, a son of Elbert and Ella (Goffinett) Smith.
The funeral and burial was held in Marlton, N.J., on Dec. 10.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Teresa; two sons, John and Dennis Smith, two daughters, Deniese Clevland and Cathy Wilkinson, all of New Jersey; five brothers, Dawson Smith of San Diego, Calif., Clyde Smith of House Springs, Mo., Neal Smith of Rupert, Idaho, Cletis Smith of Paul, Idaho; four sisters, Martha Kienzle of Rupert, Idaho, Esther Montgomery of Albion, Idaho, Eulah Leonard of Filer, Idaho, and Dorotha Tolley of McLeansboro; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Addie G. Threlkeld 
Born April 16, 1908 - Died December 5, 1997
Addie G. Threlkeld, 89, of McLeansboro, died at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. She was a swithcboard operator at the Manteno State Hospital and a seamstress at Elders Manufacturing Company of McLeansboro.
She was born on April 16, 1908, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Adam and Anna Upchurch Green. On March 27, 1931, she married William C. "Bud" Threlkeld, who died in June 1985. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in McLeansboro and a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge of McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8 at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Bill Ward officiated. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mrs. Threlkeld is survived by one daughter, Linda Webb and husband Ron L.; one son, Billy Don Threlkeld and wife Rosalie of Kankakee; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, two brothers and one sister.

Betty Zellers 
Born September 12, 1918 - Died December 4, 1997
Betty Zellers, 79, of Dahlgren, died at 5:15 a.m. on Thursday, Dec 4, 1997, at the Mt. Vernon Care Center. She was a homemaker.
She was born on Sept. 12, 1918, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Clarence A. and Florence (Geiger) Bennett. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dahlgren and was active for many years with the 4-H Home Extension. On Sept. 14, 1939, in Mcleansboro, she married Floyd Zellers, who survives.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Harre Funeral Home in Dahlgren. The Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Hamilton County.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Zellers is survived by son Glenn Zellers and wife Pauletta of Dahlgren; three daughters, Dorothy HOward of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Juanita Phillips and husband Sam of Mt. Vernon; Phyllis Bruce of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Kathrine Johnston and husband Sam of Polo, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Ellis E. "Ted" Rose 
Born May 28, 1922 - Died November 24, 1997
Ellis E. "Ted" Rose, 75, of Clay City and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 3:37 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. He was a retired oil field production pumper.
He was born on May 28, 1922, in Pope County, a son of Ellis McKinley and Anna Irene (Russell) Rose. On Oct. 24, 1942, he married Dorothy Farris, who survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Sailor Springs American Legion and the Flora Moose Lodge.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert Sefried will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 106.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Donna Marie Reed and husband Donald Glenn of Grayville; two sisters, Wilma Wheeler of Springfield and Jo Ann Tedford of Seneca, Ill.; three grandchildren, Tina Marie McAllister and Bryan Glenn Reed, both of Princeton, KY., and Valerie Johnson of Crossville; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Thelma Campbell.

Crystal Ann Cross 
Born March 2, 1930 - Died November 15, 1997
Crystal Ann Cross, 67, of Chandler, Ariz., and formerly of Dahlgren, died at 12:25 a.m. on Saturday Nov. 15, 1997, at her home. She was a housewife.
She was born on March 2, 1930 in Ancona, Ill., a daughter of Paul O. and Merle L. (Zeilman) Butcher. She married Gerald M. Cross, who died on April 21, 1990. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church of Roswell, N.M., and a former member of Dyer Baptist Church in Dyer, Ind.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren. The Rev. Garland Burris officiated. Burial will be at Middle Creek Cemetery near Dahlgren.
Mrs. Cross is survived by four sons, Alan Cross and wife Kathy of Las Vegas, Nev., Joseph "Mike" Cross and wife Beth of Steger, Ill., Richard Cross and Scott Cross, both of Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Vicki Olsen and husband Blaine of Mesa, Ariz., Sharon Cross of Roswell, N.M. and Paula Hull and husband Dwight of Chandler, Ariz.; one brother, donald Butcher of pontiac, Ill.; and three sister, Eileen Weinberg, Mary Carbone and Nona White, all of Streator, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

William Baker 
Born Nov. 24, 1951 - Died November 11, 1997
William "Bill" Baker, 45, of Richview, Ill., and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He was a plant manager at Agripride F.S. at Woodlawn.
He was born on Nov. 24, 1951, a son of Clyde M. and Joie (Greene) Baker. On Dec. 9, 1983, in Wayne County, he married Sherry Keyser, who survives. He was a member of Sandoval Masonic Lodge, Centraila Elks Lodge, was a founding board member of the Illinois Wheat Association, a 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite and Ainad Temple. He was a member of Demaree United Methodist Church in Centraila.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Demaree United Methodist Church in Centraila. The Rev. Brad Henson officiated. Burial was in Brush Harbor Cemetery in McLeansboro. Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro in association with the Irvin Funeral Home of Centraila was in charge of the arrangements.
Besides his wife, Mr. Baker is survived by his father, Clyde Baker of McLeansboro; one son, Stanley O'Brecht Jr. of Richview; one daughter, Angela Brow of Centraila; four brothers-in-law, Sam Keyser and Greg Keyser, both of Geff, Lary Keyser of Cisne and Rick Keyser of Golden Gate; and two grandchildren, Bryce and Travis Brow.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children Hospital or to the Demaree United Methodist Church.

Betty E. Steele

Betty E. (Mayberry) Steele, 79, of rural McLeansboro, died at 7:06 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1918, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Moses Mayberry and Julia (Wheeler) Mayberry. On April 5, 1937, she married John W. Steele. She was a member of Dale Methodist Church.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. John Capps officiated. Burial was in Glenview Memorial Gardens near McLeansboro.
Mrs. Steele is survived by two sisters, Faye Allen of McLeansboro and Nell Harrawood of El Paso, Texas; one brother, Eugene Mayberry of Broughton.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Robert Roland Steele.

Edith Virginia Taylor 
Born November 9, 1911 - Died November 3, 1997
Edith Virginia Taylor, 85, of Mobile, Ala., and formerly of McLeansboro, died in her sleep at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 1997.
She was born on Nov. 9, 1911, in Tamaroa, Ill. In October 1931, she married Vernon O. Taylor, who preceded her in death. She was a member of the First Christian Church of McLeansboro.
Services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Allen Memorial Chapel in Mobile. The Rev. D.R. douglas officiated. Pinecrest Funeral Home of Mobile was in charge of the arrangements. Burial and graveside services at the Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton will be announced later.
She is survived by two sons, Larry L. Taylor of Mobile and Col. (USAF ret.) Roger Kip Taylor of Seoul, South Korea; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

John Metcalf 
Born May 20, 1918 - Died November 9, 1997
John Metcalf, 79, of McLeansboro, died at 2:55 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital of McLeansboro.
He was born on May 20, 1918, in Hamilton County, a son of Troy and Laurel M. (Phipps) Metcalf. he was a member of the First General Baptist Church of McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11. The Rev. Ken Cook officiated. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mr. Metcalf is survived by one sister, Doris Beard and husband Robert of McLeansboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Darrell W. Smith 
Born June 11, 1941 - Died November 7, 1997
Darrell W. Smith, 56, of the Aden Road area of Hamilton County, died at 2:40 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, at his residence. He was a farmer and was an Army veteran.
He was born on June 11, 1941, in White County, a son of Wilfred Floyd and Edna Marie (Staley) Smith. On Feb. 24, 1968, he married Dorothy Smith.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert White and Rev. Robert Lyons officiated. McLeansboro VFW had a flag presentation ceremony at the graveside. Burial was in Oddfellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mr. Smith is survived by his parents Wildred and Edna Smith of McLeansboro; his wife, Dorothy Smith; one daughter, Diane Smith at home; one son, Dwayne Smith at home; one sister, Janice Winter of Burt Prairie; and one brother Wendall Smith of Mt. Erie.

Bernice G. Wooldridge 
Born August 22, 1901 - Died November 10, 1997
Bernice G. Wooldridge, 96, of Marion and formerly of Broughton, died at 8:55 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Marion Memorial Hospital in Marion. She was a homemaker.
She was born on Aug. 22, 1901, in Broughton, a daughter of William A. and Julia (Gholson) Owen. She was married to William A. Wilson, who died in 1921. She later married Eugene T. Wooldridge, who died in 1961.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wendnesday, Nov. 12, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Elaine Hightower will officiate. Burial will be in the Gholson Cemetery in Broughton.
Mrs. Wooldridge is survived by one son, Eugene Wooldridge and wife Rhoda Mae of Marion; two daughters, Grace Watkins of Los Osos, Calif., and Betty Loper of Taylor, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Pamela Boewster, Gregory Loper, Lisa Crutchfield, Sheri Birdsong and Richard Watkins; and three great-grandchildren.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

William J. Craddock 
Born March 10, 1924 - Died November 5, 1997
William J. "Bill" Craddock, 73, of McLeansboro, died at 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5. 1997, at his home. He was a retired oil field driller.
He was born on March 10, 1924, in Galatia, a son of Frank and Goldie L. (Dye) Craddock. He married Dena Rose Mitchell on Dec. 11, 1948 in Morganfield, Ky., and she survives. he was a lifetime member of benton VFW Post #2671, the McLeansboro American Legion Post #106 and the McLeansboro Eagles Lodge.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert Sefried and Rev. Jason Craddock officiated. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery in McLeansboro with graveside military rites by American Legion Post #106.
Mr. Craddock is survived by his wife Dena Rose Craddock of McLeansboro; three sons, James E. Craddock and wife Sandy of McLeansboro, Mark F. Craddock and wife Cheryl of McLeansboro and Charles W. Craddock and wife Vickie of Norris City; one daughter, Bille Welch and husband Christopher of McLeansboro; two brothers, Eugene Craddock and Ray Craddock, both of McLeansboro; one sister, Bessie Ritchason of McLeansboro; five grandchildren, Jason, James, William Daniel Craddock and Jordan WElch; two great-grandchildren, Whitney and Brandon Craddock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Glen and Arvie Ewell Graddock and sister Anne Helen Smith.

Ralph B. Hungate

Ralph B. Hungate, 75, of McLeansboro, died on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was a retired self-employed barber, owning Hungate's Barber Shop in McLeansboro.
He was born on May 21, 1913, in Hamilton County, a son of Frank Hungate and Maude (Shaffer) Hungate. On Sept. 6, 1935, he married Mary Ellen (Ritchason) Hungate, who survives. He was a member of Brush Harbor General Baptist Church of McLeansboro, Macedonia Lodge #1128 A.F. & A.M. (over 50 years), and Ainad Temple of East St. Louis Shriners and a member of Scottish Rite bodies of Belleville.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Charles Phelps officiated. Burial was in Ten Mile Cemetery in McLeansboro. Masonic rites were performed by Macedonia Lodge A.F & A.M. at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7.
Mr. Hungate is survived by three daughters, Leda Ruth Bishoff and husband Bill of Wilmette, Ill., Doris Jean Parker and husband Cortland of Irvington, Ill., Nina Leigh Hungate Gauer of Evansville, Ind.; five sons, Charles Robert Hungate and wife bonnie of Vincennes, Ind., Harrel Hungate and wife Wanda of McLeansboro, Paul D. hungate and wife Gladys of McLeansboro, Carl B. Hungate of McLeansboro, Donald Ralph Hungate of McLeansboro; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Dorothy Hungate Cafarelli of Albuquerque, N.M., one half-sister, Susue Jane Mezo of Harrisburg; one half-brother, William Frank Hungate of McLeansboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

William H. Davis

William Henry "Bill" Davis, 75, of McLeansboro, died at 3:35 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at his residence. He was a retired driver for Universal utane and Laborers Union #1197 of McLeansboro.
He was born on Nov. 22, 1921, in Hamilton county, a son of Albert and Daisy (O'Bryan) Davis. On Dec. 23, 1941, he married hettie Lucille (Taylor), who survives. He was a member of the First Christian Church in McLeansboro, a member of Polk Lodge #137 of McLeansboro and Laborers Union #1197 of McLeansboro. Mr. Davis was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Rob Robbins officiated. Burial was in Oddfellows Cemetery in McLeansboro. Masonic rites were performed by Polk Lodge #137 of McLeansboro at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8.
Besides his wife, Mr. Davis is survived by two daughters, Brenda Tripp and husband John of Christopher, Linda Robbins and husband Jim of Sesser; two brothers, Wilburn Davis of St. Charles, Mo., Dr. Bryan Davis of Conroe, Texas; three sisters, Freda Kone of Mt. Vernon, Alice Deen of Broughton and Sue Cottingham of St. Louis; six grandchildren, Kim Kail, Mark Reichow, Rob Robbins, Scott Robbins, Chantyl Wilson and Cory Robbins; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Pearl A. Casey 
Born October 5, 1909 - Died November 6, 1997
Pearl A. Casey, 88, of Dahlgren, died at 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon. She was a homemaker.
She was born on Oct. 5, 1909, in Franklin County, a daughter of George W. and Emma Jane (Page) Gapps. On Nov. 23, 1929, she married Calvin E. "Dutch" Casey in Mt. Vernon. She was a member of Belle Rive Baptist Church.
The graveside funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. The Rev. Richard McCormick officiated. Burial was in Hams Grove Cemetery near Opdyke. Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Casey is survived by one sister, Zella Payne of Dahlgren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, eight brothers and two sisters.
