Born Feb.5, 1911, in Wakefield, Mich.,to Gust and Maria (nee Hulberg)
Kangas, she passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at her home, following

Mrs. Bennes was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross in Libertyville
and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Gurnee where she was active in
many church groups, including the Lutheran Women's Mission League.An avid
Chicago Cubs fan, Mrs. Bennes devoted her life to her family. She had made
her home with her daughter and son-in-law in Iowa City for the past five
years.
Surviving are her daughter, Joanne (Phillip) Schmid of Iowa City; son,
Peter (Joan Ann) Bennes of Mesa, Ariz.; grandchildren, Phil (Kathy) Schmid
of Waukesha, Wis.,Kecia (David) Boysen of Iowa City, Peter (Sally)Bennes
of Lindenhurst, David (Marie) Bennes of Mount Holly, N.C., James (Diane)
Bennes of Hoffman Estates, Robert (Ann) Bennes of Peoria and Christopher
Bennes of DePere, Wis.; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived
by her sister, Eleanor Lane of Wakefield, Mich.; brother, Arnold Kangas
of Shawano, Wis.; and four nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter Bennes, whom
she married in June, 1932, and who preceded her March 14, 1976; and six
brothers and sisters.

of First United Methodist Church of Palatine.
He was the beloved husband of Diane E. Grasse (nee Conrad) of Palatine;
loving father of Matthew C.

dear son of Robert and Ruth Grasse Sr. of Sheboygan; dear brother of Tim

Mr.Hurckes was a graduate ofthe University of Illinois, Champaign.
A resident of the McHenry area for the past 24 years, he was one of the
founders in 1956 of B & H Industries reprographics printing company
of Arlington Heights, McHenry, Warrenville and Barrington. He was a member
of the Loyal Order of the Moose #1782 of Naples, Fla., the Elks Lodge #1531
of Elmhurst,the Johnsburg Community Club, the Julien Dubuque Yacht Club,
and the National Rifle Association (NRA). He was formerly a 12-year member
of the Johnsburg school board and a former member of the Johnsburg Little
League. He was also a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in McHenry.
Survivors include his wife, Jerri Hurckes (nee Taylor), whom he married
June 13, 1980, at First United Methodist Church in McHenry; sons, Robert

Born April 18, 1917, in Kiruna, Sweden, he passed away Friday, July
31, 1998.
Mr.Magnuson immigrated to the United States with his family when he
was 6 years old. He lived in the Chicago and Fox Valley area for most of
hislife, before moving to Austin, Texas in 1986 to enjoy his retirement.
Prior to his retirement in 1982 from Ryerson Steel, he was employed by
U.S. Steel.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Magnuson; son, Carl A.
(Betty) Magnuson of Geneva; daughters, Donna Nelson of Austin, Lori Dieter
of Buda, Texas, and Mary Kay (Dan) Haws of Plano; 12 grandchildren; and
one great-granddaughter.

Salvation Army or to the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Ann M. Matovich (nee Dawson), 71, a resident of
Round Lake for the past 32 years, formerly of Wauconda, will be held at

Born Nov.1, 1926, in Bradshaw, W.V., she died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998,
at St. Therese Medical Centerin Waukegan. Interment will be private.
She leaves her loving husband, Joseph, whom she wed on March 21, 1944,
in Baltimore, Md.; daughters, Yvonne Falconer of Cary, Terry Wells of Hyndman,
Pa.and Mary Ann Gauthier of Buffalo, N.Y.; son, Joseph Jr. (Dawn) Matovich
of Gurnee; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several niecesand
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Martha (nee Beavers);
son, Andrew in 1977; daughters, Sherry Collings in 1996 and Rose Matovich
in 1996; grandson, Danny Vohwinkle in 1998; brothers, Robert and Bill Dawson;
and sisters, Mary Dawson and Elizabeth Hite.

Leonard `Len' McCracken
Memorial visitation for Leonard `Len' Dean McCracken, 71, of Arlington
Heights, will be held Thursday from 3 p.m. until the time of memorial service
at 7 p.m., at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road
(four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights.
Born June 18, 1927, in Highland, Ill.,he died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998,
at his home. Interment will be private in Woodland Cemetery, McHenry.
Mr.McCracken worked for Wilson Sporting Goods in River Grove for 41
years in the research and development department, retiring in 1988. He
attended McHenry schools, graduating with the class of 1945.
After high school, he served in the Navy, then attended Northern Illinois
University of DeKalb, graduating in 1950. Mr. McCracken wasa very active
member of the New Tradition Chorus of Northbrook.
They are currently the International S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. silver medalists.
His love of barber shop singing followed him for 47 years. He was also
an avid tennis and golf player.
He was the husband of the late Joan H. (nee Mart), whom he married
on July 5, 1952, and who preceded him in death on Feb.10, 1990; father
of Jane A. (Bob) Swenson of Poplar Grove and Paul D. (Sally) McCracken
of Bartlett; grandfather of Tim McCracken and Gary, Chris and Eric Oden;
brother of Patti (Jim) Vickery of Crystal Lake and Don (Joan) McCracken
of Horton, Mich.; and son of the late Leonard and Cleda McCracken.

Earl J. Schlosser
Funeral services for Earl J. Schlosser, 73, of Glenview, will be held

Born Oct.2, 1924, in Chicago, he died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Manor

Mr.Schlosser, a veteran of World War II, worked for Underwriters Laboratory
and was a member of the Live Wires. He was also a Cubs fan.
He was the husband of the late Anna Marie Schlosser; father of Donald
Earl (Bonnie) Schlosser and Denise Ann (David) Schaefer; brother of Ruth
(Al) Willer; grandfather of Nicole Marie; and son-in-law of Anna Guman.

of 27; and great-great-grandmother of three.

Joseph W. Sonn
Funeral services for Joseph W. Sonn, 76, of Grayslake, will be held

Born Dec. 25, 1921, in Waukegan, the son of Matt and Mary (nee Sagaser)
Sonn, he died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at home. Interment will be in North
Shore Garden of Memories Cemetery, North Chicago.
A resident of Grayslake since 1952, he was an Army veteran having served
during World War II. Mr.
Sonn was one of the early Grayslake Policemen serving during the 1950's,
earning a wage of fifty cents per hour. He was a member of the United Protestant
Church of Grayslake. In 1981, Mr.Sonn retired from Abbott Laboratories
in North Chicago, where he had been employed as an instrument repair person.
He leaves his loving wife, Mabel (nee Wagner), whom he wed on June
18, 1949, in Waukegan; son, Joseph B. Sonn of Grayslake; grandson, Steven
(Sherry) Sonn of Buffalo Grove; and sister, Mary Jane (Kenneth) Nelson
of Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, George.

Dorothy S. Voss
Graveside services for Dorothy S. Voss (nee Reed), 82, of Loveland,

Born June 5, 1916, in Putnam, Ill., she died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998,
at McKee Medical Center in Loveland.
Mrs. Voss,along with her late husband, Howard, owned and operated many
restaurants and delicatessens in the area. She was a past worthy matron
of the Eastern Star Chapter 9920 of Arlington Heights and an accomplished
bowler. She loved fishing, gardening, knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy (David) Curtis of Capron, Ill.
and Shirley Pape of Colorado; brother, Billy (Hazel) Reed of Elgin; sister,
Betty Bork of Buffalo Grove; six grandchildren, Howard Curtis of Long Grove,
Debbie, Chad and Glen Pape of Loveland, Colo., Sandy Gage of Loveland,
Colo. and Chris Pape of Minnesota; and great-grandchildren, Ryan, Nicholaus,
Josh, Jessie, Danielle, Nichol, Angela, Kim, Becky and Julie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard F. Voss, to whom she
was married for 50 years.

Walter Young
Funeral services for Walter Young, 86, of Elgin, will be held at 10
a.m. Friday, at Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St., Elgin, with the Rev.
Herman Christiansen officiating.
Born March 5, 1912, in Union, Ill., the son of Clarence and Martha
Pelnow Young, he died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Heritage Manor.
Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
A lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin, Mr. Young
was employed by Ray Young Food Distributors until his retirement. He was
one of the founders of the Elgin Land Old Timers, and he coached several
Little League, American Legion and semi-professional baseball teams.
An avid bowler, Mr. Young spent more than 50 years with St. John's
Bowling League and five years with the Senior Citizens Bowling League.
Survivors include his son, Robert (Linda) Young of Elgin; one daughter,
Sandy Nagel of Carpentersville; eight granchildren, Jeane Johnson and Greg
Nagel, both of Carpentersville, and Joshua, Bethany, Rebekah, Jessica,
Jared and Abby Young, all of Elgin; five greatgrandchildren; and one brother,
Raymond Young of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice; and one
granddaughter, Jorden.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
