Blaine M. Harteg Jr., 48, of Kremp Road, Brecknock Township, died Dec. 24 at 2:16 p.m. in the emergency room of Reading Hospital. The cause of death is under investigation by the Berks County coroner's office. He was the husband of Suzanne A. (Herzog) Harteg. Born in Phoenixville, he was a son of Blaine M. Harteg Sr., Port Charlotte, Fla., and the late June D. (Horn) Harteg. Herteg was the owner and president of Guardian Records Management and Storage Co., Brecknock Township, since 1991. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Shillington, where he was the church council secretary. Herteg was a past officer of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Area Records Management Association. He is also survived by a daughter Valeri S.; and a stepson, Christopher M. Gassert, both at home. Other survivors include a brother, Douglas S., Port Charlotte. Mr. Virgil Iden Wines, Sr., 71, of Spotsylvania died on Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Beverly Health Care Center. He is survived by a daughter, Brenda M. Wooten of Fredericksburg; four sons, Virgil I. Wines, II of Martinsburg, NC and Carl W. Wines, Robert E. Wines and Paul D. Wines, all of Riedsville, NC; a brother, three sisters, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Wines. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 29, 2002 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Fredericksburg from 6:00-8:00 pm. She was a native of Philadelphia, PA and has lived in the Charleston area since the late 1950’s. Dorothy is survived by three sons and one daughter: Howard Westervelt of Boca Raton, Florida, Edward Westervelt of Ellicott City, Maryland, Barbara Westervelt Jones of Spartanburg, SC and John Westervelt of Clovis, CA. Mrs. Rembish was a member of the Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Maryville, IL. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association. Born and reared in Northeast Philadelphia, she lived in Ridley Township before moving to Sharon Hill six years ago. Mrs. Barger was a homemaker. she enjoyed gardening. She is survived by her sons, William A. Phelps Jr. of Silverdale, Wash., Andrew Phelps of Lucerne, Colo.; daughters, Cynthia A. Phelps, susan Phelps, both at home; eight grandchildren.

Lt. Col. William H. Huston Sr., of the Essington section of Tinicum Township an Air Force pilot who served during three wars, died December 21 at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland. Born in Chester, Mr. Huston served in the Air Force for 34 years, a career that spanned World War II and the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. He was an air lift pilot and air craft commander. In retirement, Mr. Huston was a demonstrator on the education staff of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He attended the University of Southern California. He was an avid outdoorsman. Mr. Huston is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis A. Stipa Huston; son, William H. Huston of Prospect Park, daughter Christine H. Huston of Essington; sister Joanna Urban of Morton; two grandchildren. Interment private. Mass cards preferred.

She was born in Philadelphia. Pearl Gertrude Johnson, the daughter of William and Ella (DeVries) Tjaden, was born June 11 1918 in rural Beulah, North Dakota, the youngest of ten children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church. She grew up in the rural area around Beulah, was educated and graduated from Center, ND. Pearl married Harold L. Johnson on February 17, 1935, in Hazen, North Dakota. In 1944, Harold was killed in Germany in WWII. After Harold’s death Pearl remained in the Peterson area where she worked various jobs. On November 29, 1975, Pearl married Alvin Johnson in Petersen, IA. Following their marriage they remained in the Peterson area where they farmed. After Alvin’s death in 1980, she moved to Linn Grove, IA. Pearl was a friend of the Methodist Church in Peterson, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in her early years. Pearl would always say in her own words, ”My hobbies in life were to help anyone who needed it and to keep the peace when needed.” Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Pearl passed away at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, Iowa, on December 28, 2002, at the age of 84. She was part of the “Greatest Generation.” She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; three sisters: Mary McGrath, Tena Fetch and Alice Pascua; six brothers: Fred, Kobes, Albert, Louis, Carl and Walter. She is survived by her two daughters: Marlene Joan Pieper and her husband Melvin, of Manson, IA and Ellen Charlotte James and her husband Ray of Dallas Center, IA; one son, Vernon Johnson of Linn Grove, IA; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Rose D. Markham, 85 of Fredericksburg died Saturday December 28, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. Rose earned her B.A. in English and History at Ohio Wesleyan and her Masters in Education in Library Science from Case Western Reserve. She worked for the Ohio public school system as a librarian for over 20 years until she retired. She is survived by two daughters, Dorothea Neighbours of Fredericksburg, Carol Pullin of Munroe Falls, OH; a son, Daniel Thomas Colnon of Woodinville, WA and seven grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Fredericksburg on Monday, December 30, 2002 at 2:00pm with the Rev. Don Neighbours officiating. Rose enjoyed the last four years of her life in Fredericksburg with the best of care at Wilburn Gardens.

Carolyn J. Quaglio, 81, of Lawrence Avenue, Spring Township, died Dec. 27 at 4:15 p.m. in Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient for one week. She was the wife of Rudolph Quaglio. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Umberto and Pauline (DeMarco) LePore. Quaglio had been employed for 12 years as an examiner by Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing, and for 10 years as a sales clerk and in the advertising department of C. K. Whitner's department store, Reading in 1974. She was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Roman Catholic Church, Shillington. Quaglio is also survived by two daughters, Carole A. (Quaglio) Mikanowicz, WWhitehall, Lehigh County, and Nancy J. Quaglio) Hutzler, Brea, Calif. There are also three grandchildren. Roland W. Tapp, 86, of swarthmore, a World War II dive-bomber pilot, missionary, and book editor, died December 29 at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland. Dr. Tapp was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., the son of the late Roland Wesley Tapp Sr. and Anne Louise Parrott Tapp. He served from 1941 to 1945 as a combat dive bomber pilot in the U.S. Air Force in North Africa and Italy, receiving the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the distinguished Service Unit Medal, and the American Defense Medal. As a result of repeated high-speed dives, he contracted Meneire's Syndrome, an inner ear disorder that impacted him for the rest of his life. After the war Dr. Tapp entered the San Francisco Theological Seminary, where he received his Bachelor's of Divinity degree in 1947. He was an instructor in Greek and Hebrew at the seminary from 1947 to 1949. He received a master's degree in psychology and education from Columbia University in 1950, and served as a professor of philosophy and religion at Centre College in Danville, Ky., from 1954 to 1955. In California Dr. Tapp served as a pastor of churches in San Diego and Menlo Park before completing his doctorate in theology and the New Testament at San Francisco Seminary in 1957. He became Associate Editor of the Westminster Press, the publishing house of the Presbyterian Church, where he served from 1957 to 1970. After retiring from Westminster Press, Dr. Tapp founded Tapp associates, a publishing consultant, working with several publishing houses. he was the director of the Ghost Ranch writers Institute from 1967 to 1977. From 1974 to 1977, he was president of omega Books, an independent publishing house based in Corte Madera, Calif. he was the founding editor of Church Teachers, magazine in 1973. From 19777 to the early 1990's, he continued to give writing and publishing workshops around the country. his publications included "The Gospls from the Mount," published in 1957; "The Beatitudes" in 1969; and "The Apocalypse of St. John" in 1977. In 1969, Dr. Tapp received national attention for a study he directed on the long-range future of the church. On his 80th birthday, writers from around the country contributed to a book, thanking him for his encouragement and close personal involement in their careers. Dr. Tapp is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Tapp of Swarthmore; sons, Gary of Atlanta, Ga., Neil of Suplee, Pa.; daughter Janis Tapp of West Chester; brother, Charles Robert Tapp of Summerville, S.C.; sister Barbara Kent of San Mateo, Calif.; three grandchildren.

Mary L. Dailey, 77, of the Hawthorne Home, formerly of North Tenth Street, died Dec. 29 at 8:42 a.m. in the emergency room of St. Joseph Medical Center. Her husband, James H. Dailey Sr., died July 20, 2000. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Francis P. and Molly (Manwiller) Hause. Dailey had been employed for many years as a bookkeeper by various businesses in the Reading area until her retirement. She was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, where she was past president of the Lutheran Church Women and former Altar Guild member. Dailey had also served as on the Altar Guild at both Holy Spirit Lutheran and St. Mark's Lutheran Churches. She was a 1942 graduate of Reading High School. Dailey is survived by a daughter, Eileen L. Dailey, Kutztown; and two sons, James H. Jr., Leesport, and Christopher H., Wernersville. There are also four grandchildren. Ethel B. Glaser, 83, of Buttonwood St., died Dec. 30 in St. Joseph Medical Center where she had been a patient for one day. Her husband, Robert B. Glaser, died Nov. 25, 1992. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Harry S. and Lizzie R. (Fredericks) Boyer. Glaser had been employed for 12 years as a key puncher by Talbot Knitting Mills, Reading, before retiring in 1972. She played on the Kauffman Maids Softball Team from 1939-1949. Glaser is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline A. (Glaser) Eveland, Blandon, and two sisters, Ruth E. (Boyer) Schrum, Mohnton, and Mildred (Boyer) Kurtz, Laureldale. There is also one granddaughter. Maurine E. Stoterau, the daughter of Stephen and Anna Maroney Redmond, was born January 22, 1907, in Sanborn, IA. She received her education and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1925. Following her graduation from high school, she took normal training to be a teacher and taught school in Osceola and O’Brien Counties in Iowa. In 1932, Maurine married John Stoterau in Wayne, NE. They made their home in Hartley where John sold cars for many years and Maurine taught school in the Sutherland, IA area. She attended Northwestern College in Orange City, IA and received her degree in 1965. While living in Hartley, she was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and the Federated Women’s Club. On Sunday, December 29, 2002, Mrs. Stoterau passed away at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, IA at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John in 1986; 3 sisters and 1 brother. Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses: Kathleen & Jerry Kramer of Spirit Lake, IA and Rosemount, MN; Joanne & Ted Lyons of Spirit Lake, IA and Burnside, IA; Jack & Patricia Stoterau of St. Leonard, MD; Tom & Patti Stoterau of Huntingtown, MD; 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

Steven Lynn Eickhoff, the son of Edgar William and Betty Hansen Eickhoff, was born October 28, 1945, in Storm Lake, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Newell, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Newell High School. Steve married Karen Miller on December 28, 1963, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Following their marriage, he worked at Fareway in Webster City, Iowa. In 1964, they moved to Storm Lake where they operated a small grocery store and later he worked at Hygrade, which is now IBP. Steve farmed with his father-in-law until moving to the Spencer area to his present home in March of 1972, where he farmed and sold Pioneer Seed Corn until the time of his death. Steve received his CCA certificate for Agronomy and was a member of the Farmer’s Coop Elevator Board. Steve and his son, Doug, enjoyed farming together for many years. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and was an avid fisherman. Steve passed away suddenly at the Spencer Municipal Hospital on Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at the age of 57. He was preceded in death by one son, Craig Steven, in 1978. He is survived by his wife, Karen, of rural Spencer; one daughter and her husband, Annette Marie and Steve Spears of Spencer; one son and his wife, Douglas William and Deon of rural Spencer; three grandchildren: Meghan, Amber and Lakyn; his parents: Edgar & Betty Eickhoff of Newell, IA; 2 brothers & their wives: Bill & Karen Eickhoff of Orange City, IA and Tom & LaDonna Eickhoff of Boone, IA; one sister, Becky & her husband, Loren Zoet of Adel, IA; his father & mother-in-law, Kenneth & Maxine Miller of Storm Lake, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Anthony Aleksewicz, 85, of Media, died December 30 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland. Born in Philadelphia, he lived in Media for more than 30 years. Mr. Aleksewicz was employed by Philadelphia Gear Corp. in King of Prussia, retiring in 1982. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in World War II. He was the widower of Emma B. Dolan Aleksewicz. His stepson, W. Ronald Dolan also predeceased him. He is survived by his stepsons, Kenneth P. Dolan of Rockville, Md.,James A. Dolan of West Grove, R. Florence M. Paris, 90, formerly of Shillington Commons, Community Drive, died Dec. 31 at 1:50 p.m. in Mifflin Center, where she had resided since April 1993. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Paris. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Mary O. (Bachman) Bush. Surviving are two sons, Jon M., Shillington, and Stephen H., Cumru Township. There are also two grandsons.
