Harley "Brownie" Brown

Services were Sept. 17, 1999 for Harley Clemet "Brownie" Brown, 84, of Santa Barbara, Calif., formerly of Ida Grove, at San Roque Church in Santa Barbara. Burial was in Goleta District Cemetery under the direction of McDermott Crockett Mortuary.
Mr. Brown died Sept. 8 in Santa Barbara.
Mr. Brown was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Ida Grove. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1933.
He worked for the A & P Supermarket at 1401 Chapala St. beginning in 1933 and later became manager as other A & P's in town closed up.
He married Mercedes Colombana in 1939 in Bakersfield. Together, they operated a mom and pop grocery business, Brownie's Market, from 1946-78. On Aug. 18, 1999 the couple celebrated their 60th anniversary.
He was a 53-year member of the Santa Barbara Elks Lodge as well as a member of the Retail Clerks Retirees (U.F.C.W., Local 1036).
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Bob and Elaine (Talevi) Brown; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Darrell Crandall of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jeff and Troy Brown of Santa Barbara and Eric Crandall and Tricia Crandall Akers of Colorado Springs; and many nieces and nephews. A niece, Patricia Brown Lindgren, resides in Ida Grove.

Hedwig Abbe

Services were Sept. 24, 1999 for Hedwig Paulina Henrietta Abbe, 94, of Schleswig at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated with burial in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, in Ida Grove under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.
Mrs. Abbe died Sept. 20 at her home.
Mrs. Abbe was born March 13, 1905, on a farm in Grant Township, near Ida Grove, the daughter of Paul and Marie (Riessen) Koch. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township. She received her education at a rural school near her home. Following her education, tshe helped her family on the farm.
She married Albert Abbe Dec. 30, 1925 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Ida County. He died in 1938. She moved to Schleswig in 1952 and worked as a cook at the Schleswig School for 21 years. After retiring she made quilts for her family and helped with quilting at the church for World Relief.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and a member of Immanuel's Ladies Aid since 1969.
Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Darlene Abbe of Schleswig and Ruby Miller of Missouri; five grandchildren and their spouses, Roberta and John Taylor of Hastings, Minn., Sherry and Jim Rainier of Hackettstown, N.J., and Larry and Anne Abbe, Keith and Robin Friedrichsen and Terry and Sally Abbe, all of Schleswig; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Selma Fredericks of Schleswig; two brothers, Albrecht Koch and Don and his wife, Donna Koch, all of Schleswig; a brother-in-law and his wife, Cleo and Bernice Robinson of Danbury; and many nieces and nephews.

Mia Rose Hamann

Services were Sept. 29, 1999 for Mia Rose Hamann of Sioux City, two-year-old daughter of Amy Hamann and Travis Bloom, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. The Rev. Gerald Fisch officiated with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Battle Creek under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mia died Sept. 26 at her home.
Mia was born Sept. 14, 1997, in Council Bluffs.
Survivors include her mother, Amy Hamann of Sioux City; her father, Travis Bloom of Council Bluffs; paternal grandparents, Randy and Diana L. "Dee" Bloom of Clear Lake; maternal grandparents, Richard "Dick" and Connie Hamann of Battle Creek; paternal great-grandparents, Wayne and Geri Bloom of Villisca; maternal great-grandmothers, Lois Collins of Mapleton and Cecelia Hamann of Ida Grove; two aunts, Stacy and her husband, Matthew Sieperda of Spirit Lake and Jennifer Bloom of Madison, Wis.; two cousins, Regan and Taylor Sieperda of Spirit Lake; and many other relatives.

Betty Pitts

Services were Friday for Betty L. Pitts, 72, of Tucson, Ariz., at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home in Anderson. Burial was in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Pitts died Sept. 5 in San Diego, Calif.
Mrs. Pitts was born May 31, 1927, in Woodbury County, the daughter of Artie and Cecil Mae (Hare) Lewellyn. Her husband Marshall A. "Jim' Pitts died in 1991. She moved from Anderson to Tucson, Ariz. in 1993. She was retired from the Delco Remy accounting department and also worked as a real estate agent.
She was past guardian of Jobs Daughters Bethel 126 and was a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority.
Survivors include a son and his wife, James A. and Cristy Pitts of Anderson; a daughter and her husband, Melissa and Jason Puckett of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Jonathon A. Pitts of Anderson, Jacqueline Nelson of South Bend, Christine A. Davis of Tucson, Dawn Jackman of Anderson, Michael "Tony" Davis of Fortville, A. Corey Holland of Frankton and Cody M. Holland of Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Austin Jackman and Dakota Jackman; a brother and his wife, Clifford and Lavonne Lewellyn of Humboldt; and a sister-in-law, Daisy Lewellyn of Daleville.

Carsten Carstensen

Services were Sept. 15, 1999 for Carsten Carstensen, 85, of Ida Grove at United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The Rev. Gordon Hoyt officiated with burial in Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.
Mr. Carstensen died Sept. 11 at his home.
Mr. Carstensen was born Oct. 9, 1913, in Ostbordelum, Germany, the son of Jens and Margaretha (Petersen) Carstensen. He was baptized and confirmed in Germany. He received his education in Germany. In 1930, he moved to America with his family and farmed with his father.
In 1949, Fritz and Carsten began farming together. Carsten retired in 1955 and moved to his parent's residence to care for his mother. He resided there until his death.
He was a member of United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
Survivors include a sister, Inge Carstensen and a sister-in-law, Elsie Carstensen, both of Ida Grove.

Ruby Otto

Services were Sept. 17, 1999 for Ruby M. Otto, 83, of Mapleton at United Methodist Church in Danbury. The Rev. Glenn Houts III officiated with burial in Liston Township Cemetery under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton.
Mrs. Otto died Sept. 14 at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Otto died Oct. 21, 1915, in Danbury, the daughter of Art and Lottie (Bumsted) Pry.
She married Earl A. Otto May 26, 1937, in Moville. The couple farmed until his death in 1991. In November 1991, she moved to Mapleton. She entered Willow Dale Care Center in September 1999.
She was a member of United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sara and Joseph Tarchie of Columbia Beach, Va.; a son and his wife, Bob and Linda Otto of Mapleton; and three granddaughters, Diane Marie Tarchie, Melissa K. Kruse and Rebecca Otto.

Dorothy Norton

Services were Sept. 17, 1999 for Dorothy Helen Norton, 81, of Akron at First Baptist Church in Akron. The Rev. Timothy Newman officiated with burial in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Norton died Sept. 13 at a Sioux City hospital.
Mrs. Norton was born April 29, 1918, near Hawarden, the daughter of George and Dollie (Rion) Newman. She moved with her family to a farm in Liberty Township, Merrill. She attended country school in Liberty Township.
She married Raymond Norton Feb. 4, 1935, in Le Mars. The couple farmed in the Merrill and Brunsville area for several years. They later purchased a farm near Akron, where they farmed for 15 years. They moved to Sioux City in 1975. While living in Sioux City, she was employed with the lunch program at Sloan Elementary School. They returned to Akron in January 1989.
She was a member of First Baptist Church. She had taught Sunday School at various churches.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Donald and Naomi Norton of Omaha, Neb.; five daughters and their husbands, Carol and Art Sattoriva of Great Falls, Mont., Betty and Sig Stenlund of Boulder, Colo., Joyce and Larry Madsen of South Sioux City, Judy and Terry Kenealy of Holstein and Sheryl and Glen Rippke of Ames; 19 grandchildren, Dixie Anson, Steve and Scott Norton, Janet McGee, Danny, Randy and Rick McCamley, Tricia Turner, Julie Jones, Debbie Kamerzell, Gordon and Heath Johnson, Shannon Kohn, Lori Dendy, Joy Urban, David Madsen, and Allison, Emily and Joe Rippke; 28 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a brother and his wife, George and Lucille Newman of Spirit Lake; and a sister, Maxine Nissen of Omaha.

Leslie Peters

Services were Sept. 18, 1999 for Leslie Peters, 90, of Galva at St. John's Lutheran Church in Galva. The Rev. Robert Alexander officiated with burial in Deloit Cemetery in Deloit under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Peters died Sept. 16 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City.
Mr. Peters was born Feb. 22, 1909, in Morgan, Mo., the son of Joel and Francis (Epps) Peters. He spent his boyhood years on a farm near Claremore, Okla., and in his teen years followed the wheat harvest throughout the Midwest. He attended the Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis and preached at the Lutheran Church in Morgan, Mo., which his grandfather founded.
He married Beulah Viola Darling Oct. 7, 1938. He worked on farms in the Denison area. In the early 1940s he worked as a mechanic in Omaha and Bellevue, Neb. The family later moved to Denison, where he was employed in retailing. In 1948, the family moved to Galva, where he retired from his work at Hygrade after many years. He also mowed lawns and removed snow for people in and around Galva. For the past six years, the couple have resided at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Joan and her husband, Harold Beermann of Denison, Kathy Rasmussen Andresen of Galva and Carol and her husband, Ronald Wendel of Schaller; a son and his wife, Richard and Mary Peters of Dallas, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
Also, seven brothers, Herman and his wife, Ruby Peters of Lincoln, Kan., Wayne and his wife, Irene Peters of Beloit, Wis., Lee Peters of Broken Arrow, Okla., Paul and his wife, Carol Peters of Whitesboro, Texas, Ed and his wife, Cleo Peters of Denison, Jonathan and his wife, Edna Peters of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Adolph and his wife, Bert Peters of Kinsley, Kan.; and a sister and her husband, Goldie and Knut Schaad of Mountain Home, Idaho.

John Pair

Services were Sept. 20, 1999 for John Pair, 80, of Sioux City, formerly of Ida Grove, at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. Roslyn Gunnink, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ida Grove, officiated with burial in the Ida Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Pair died Sept. 17 at Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City.
Mr. Pair was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Brookings County, S.D., the son of John R. and Fannie Pearl (Caldwell) Pair. He served five years in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a crew chief of a United States Air Force ground crew, reaching the rank of staff sergeant. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Ida Grove, where he was a farm worker until his retirement in 1981.
Survivors includes two brothers, Ralph and his wife, Margaret Pair of Clinton, Ill., and Dale Pair of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Grace Pair of Coldwater, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin Roeder

Services were Sept. 21, 1999 for Marvin Fred Roeder, 86, of Odebolt at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Allan A. Reicks officiated with burial in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery in Odebolt under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Roeder died Sept. 18 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mr. Roeder was born March 24, 1913, in Sac County, the son of Adam and Lillian (Haefner) Roeder. He lived all his life on the farm where he was born. He attended country school, St. Martin's Catholic School and Odebolt High School.
He married Veronica Jones Jan. 29, 1935, at St. Martin's Catholic Church. He farmed for many years retiring in 1976. He was one of the first to contour farm, and also was a custom applicator of anhydrous ammonia. He was a director of the Richland #3 Country School.
Survivors include his wife; a son, George Roeder of Arthur; a daughter and her husband, Lois and Don Dunkin of Odebolt; five grandchildren and their spouses, Dean and Dawn Roeder, Paul and Sue Roeder, Joan and Dale Olerich, Carol and James Larson and Janet and David Mott; and nine great-grandchildren.

Linus Brenner

Services were Sept. 20, 1999 for Linus Peter Brenner, 87, of Mapleton at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. The Revs. Edmund Tiedeman, John Brennar and Mark Harrington officiated with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service in Mapleton.
Mr. Brenner died Sept. 16 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Mr. Brenner was born Dec. 25, 1911, at Mapleton, the son of Louis and Clara (Mah) Brenner. He grew up and was educated in the area, graduating from St. Patrick's Academy in Danbury in 1929.
He married Colette Rust May 14, 1935, at Maple River. The couple lived and farmed near Mapleton. She died in 1997.
He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in multiple community, political and farm organizations. He was instrumental in initiating West Central Development, and was director of Midwest Drug and Alcohol Council. He was a member of the Mapleton Rotary, the Mapleton Club and the Willow Vale Golf Club.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Mary and Herman Koithan of Woodbury, Minn., Maxine and Steve Jones of Tualatin, Ore., and Mona and Dan Schuh of Fairmont, Minn.; a son and his wife, Clyde and Lenn Brenner of Mapleton; 11 grandchildren, Jane and Dave Lundquist of Monona, Jeannette and Billy Luhrs of Cottage Grove, Minn., Tom and Shelly Koithan of Woodbury, Minn., John Koithan of Round Rock, Texas, John and Stacy Schuh of Tracy, Minn., Mari Schuh of Mankato, Minn., and Ryan Schuh of Fairmont, Minn.; eight greatgrandchildren, Eric, Sarah, Ellen and Claire Lundquist, Justin, Kyle and Austin Luhrs and Emily Koithan; a brother, Walter Brenner of Cherokee; a sister and her husband, Laura and Cornell Deeny of Eagle Grove; and other relatives.

Agnes Gustafson

Services will be Sept. 25, 1999 at 1 p.m. for Agnes Gustafson, 99, of Kiron at Kiron Baptist Church in Kiron. The Revs. Wayne Fitzsinger and Robert Lundberg will officiate with burial in Hayes Township Cemetery in Arthur. Friends may call at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mrs. Gustafson died Sept. 18 at Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center.
Mrs. Gustafson was born Sept. 23, 1899, in Ida County, the daughter of Adolph John and Anna Margaret (Iversen) Fries. She was baptized at the Arthur Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School and was a leader in the Women's Missionary Society. When the church closed, she joined the Kiron Baptist Church.
She married Benjamin Houser. He preceded her in death.
She married Arvid L. Gustafson June 18, 1938 at the Arthur Baptist parsonage. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Benjamin and Sharon Houser of Portland, Ore., and Harold and Lois Houser of Placerville, Calif.; three daughters, Lois and her husband, Gene Asa of Port Orchard, Wash., Margaret Gustafson of Capetown, Africa and Carol and her husband, Val Oswald of Aurora, Neb.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Marvin Fertig

Services were Sept. 22, 1999 for Marvin R. Fertig, 73, of Odebolt at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt. Burial was in Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Fertig died Sept. 20 at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City.

Edith Noyd

Services were Sept. 11, 1999 for Edith M. Noyd, 96, of Odebolt at First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Victor Johnson, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt, officiated with burial in Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mrs. Noyd died Sept. 8 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Noyd was born Sept. 9, 1902, in Arthur, the daughter of Emil and Lydia Lundblad. She moved with her family to Odebolt when she was five years old. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1919. She then attended a commercial college in Des Moines. She returned to Odebolt where she was employed as a clerk and bookkeeper in Larson's Store until her marriage.
She married George Noyd Sept. 16, 1929. The couple farmed in the Odebolt area for 30 years, retiring and moving to their present home in Odebolt in 1960. With the care from her brothers and niece Laurie and special friends, she lived in her own home until six weeks before her death which was only a day before her 97th birthday.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Nadine and Robert Proctor; a grandson, Charles Proctor; a granddaughter and her husband, Janet Proctor Bennett and David Bennett; a great-granddaughter, Alexandria Bennett; a sister, Alice Lawson of Spencer; and two brothers, Lloyd Lundblad and LeRoy Lundblad, both of Odebolt; several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church (now Faith Lutheran). She taught Sunday school for many years and was an active member of the Luther League and later the Ladies Aid and Missionary Society of the church.

Elmer Kessler

Services were Sept. 11, 1999 for Elmer John Kessler, 95, of Odebolt at United Methodist Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Al Milligan officiated with burial in Odebolt Cemetery under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Odebolt.
Mr. Kessler died Sept. 9 at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.
Mr. Kessler was born Aug. 8, 1904, in Richland Township, Sac County, the son of George H. and Mary (Geyer) Kessler. He was baptized and confirmed in the Richland Methodist Church, and later transferred to the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. He attended Richland Country School through the eighth grade.
He married Emma Johanna Hansen Jan. 5, 1927, at the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in Storm Lake. The couple opened their home to two baby girls, Ferne Mary and Lois Ann. They farmed north of Odebolt for many years. They retired from farming and moved into Odebolt in February 1961. In January 1986, they moved to Twilight Acres in Wall Lake. She died in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters, Ferne and her husband, Leonard Carstensen of Odebolt and Lois Oxendale of Arthur; three grandchildren, Julie and her husband, Tom Russell of Gurnee, Ill., Mary and her husband, Brian Robinson of Falls Church, Va., and Kurt and his wife, Tammy Carstensen of Odebolt; seven great-grandchildren, Alexandra and William Russell, Bailey and Sydney Robinson and Colton, Casey and Cailin Carstensen; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Helen Johnson

Services were Sept. 11, 1999 for Helen Johnson, 70, of Hanover Park, Ill., formerly of Kiron, at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Rev. James Schubring officiated with burial in Hayes Township Cemetery in rural Arthur.
Mrs. Johnson died Sept. 6 at her home in Hanover Park.
Mrs. Johnson was born Nov. 5, 1928, in Thor, the daughter of Lawrence and Cora Belle (Swisher) Ramsden.
She married Conwell W. Johnson, Ph.D. April 14, 1950, in Fort Dodge. She studied music at the University of Minnesota, and later taught piano lessons in her home. She served as church organist for 20 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Torricelli of Hanover Park, Ill.; a granddaughter, Emily Torricelli of Hanover Park; and two brothers, Wesley and his wife Dorothy Ramsden, of Green Bay, Wis., and Richard Ramsden of Las Vegas, Nev.
Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetic Association.

Connie Ruddy

Memorial services were Sept. 15, 1999 for Connie Marie Ruddy of Ida Grove at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. The Rev. Gerald M. Fisch officiated.
Mrs. Ruddy disappeared from her home Feb. 10, 1997.
Mrs. Ruddy was born Dec. 8, 1976, in Emmetsburg, the daughter of Gary and Mary (Richter) Neumayer. She grew up and received her education in Mallard.
She married Shad Ruddy Feb. 21, 1994. Most recently, she lived in Ida Grove, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include two children, Autumn Ruddy of Mallard and Autumn Palm of Ida Grove; her husband, Shad Ruddy of Mallard; her parents, Gary and Mary Neumayer of Ida Grove; two brothers, Jason Neumayer of Atlanta, Ga., and Kyle Neumayer of Ida Grove; a sister and her husband, Amy and Chris Jochims of Honolulu, Hawaii; paternal grandmother, Velma Neumayer of Mallard; maternal grandmother, Enid Richter of Rolfe; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Ronald Hoaglund

Graveside services will be Sept. 16, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. for Ronald Wayne Hoaglund, 59, of Battle Creek at Ida Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Marvin Lindley will officiate. Friends may call at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove today (Wednesday) from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Hoaglund died Sept. 11 at his home.
Mr. Hoaglund was born Jan. 6, 1940, in Arthur, the son of F. Russell and Bertha (Salmon) Hoaglund.
He married Leona Lansink Oct. 18, 1962, in Ida Grove. He worked as an auto body repairman for many years, then was employed at GOMACO as a service technician for five years. He moved to the Atlanta, Ga., area where he continued working as a service technician for various companies until his retirement in 1992.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth and Mark Ulrich of Arthur and Barb and Ned Hancock of Overland Park, Kan.; a son, Wayne Hoaglund of Orange, Calif.; three grandchildren, Brandon Lewis and Austin Ulrich, both of Arthur, and Ellen Hancock of Overland Park, Kan.; two sisters, Dorothy Williams of San Diego, Calif., and Elaine and her husband, Dean McCormick, of Ida Grove; and a brother and his wife, Ken and Sharon Hoaglund of Burbank, Calif.

Marceline Henderson

Services were Sept. 4, 1999 for Marceline B. Henderson, 90, of Mt. Airy, N.C., at Central United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy. The Rev. Philip Cole officiated with burial in Oakdale Cemetery under the direction of Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy, N.C.
