Lansing, IA - On September 13, 2002, John ‘Jack’ Sweeney died
of natural causes at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.
He was born July 8, 1914 in Lansing, the oldest son of Alice (Williams) Sweeney and Ben Sweeney. On July 27, 1935 he married Vivian Krzbietke.
Jack was in the CC’s, worked on the Alcan Highway, the Sawmill in New Albin for his father-in law, Herman Krzbietke, doing masonry work, and in later years for the City of Lansing in the Maintenance Department. He retired in 1978. At that time, he and his wife ‘Babe’ and his best friend Skipper became avid fisherman spending entire days on the river. He also enjoyed taking his grandchildren when they came to spend time during summer vacation. When great grandchildren came it was his joy to give them money to go to Horsfals and having them come back to show him their great purchases.
He was a fireman, city policeman and was on the town council. He was a member of the Lions Club, actively campaigning for the purchase of Lansing’s first ambulance.
Jack enjoyed League Bowling. He also drove many friends to medical appointments.

Jack was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary in infancy, three siblings, Gladys Sandry, Vera Sweeney and Raymond Sweeney.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing with Msgr. Edward Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be in the New Albin City Cemetery, New Albin, IA.
Friends may call on Monday, September 16, 2002 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing as well as after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home.
Marquette, IA - Stella Yvonne Peters, 65 of Marquette, IA died
Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, IA following
a long illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2002 at St. Mary’s Church in McGregor, IA, with burial in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, IA.
Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor, IA.
She is survived by her husband Robert E. Peters; one daughter: Christie (Mark) Priebe of Garnavillo, IA; two sons: Larry (Marilee) Peters of Marion, IA, Robert A. (Elizabeth) Peters of Monona, IA; four grandchildren: Katie, Ryan, Colin and Riley; three brothers: Michael J. (Dixie) Riley of Dubuque, IA, Eugene (Irene) Riley of McGregor, IA, John J. (Cathy) Riley of Dubuque, IA and many nieces and nephews.
She was born February 6, 1937 in McGregor, IA to John J. and Pearl A. (Laufer) Riley. She attended country school at Sny MaGill and graduated from McGregor High School in 1955. She married Robert E. Peters in McGregor on February 8, 1956. She worked as a housekeeper at the Great River Care Center in McGregor.
She was an avid gardener, enjoyed canning, baking, mushroom hunting, fishing, hunting, quilting and embroidering.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Illene Fassbinder.
Kenneth Rudolph Lamb, 86 of McGregor, IA died Wednesday, August
28, 2002, at his home following a long illness.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 2, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in McGregor, IA with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military honors.
There will be no visitation at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor.
Kenneth is survived by his wife Jackie; three daughters: Candy Lamb of Sherwood, OR, Cindy (Allan) Kirchner of Aloha, OR, Christy (Esteban) Armendariz of El Paso, TX; three grandchildren: Tom (Julie) Kirchner of Trigard, OR, Ken Kirchner of Aloha, OR, Gina (Mike) Cross of Sherwood, OR; three great grandchildren: Kelsie, Haley and Sheree.
Kenneth was born November 3, 1915 in Chicago, IL to Alfred and Emma (Lindstrom) Lamb. He graduated from Lane Technical School in Chicago in 1937. He served during WWII in the Army/Air Force from 1941 to 1945. He married Jacquelyn Ferguson on April 10, 1947 in McGregor. They lived in Chicago until moving to McGregor in 1950.
Ken worked as foreman for the Iowa Forestry Division at the Yellow River State Forest until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the American Legion since 1957 and the United Methodist Church since 1963.
Lansing, IA - Elizabeth M. Burroughs, age 82 of Lansing, died
Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at her home in Center Township, Allamakee County,
Elizabeth was born in Allamakee county on December 14, 1919 to John and Mary Elizabeth (Hammel) Becker. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception Grade School in Lansing. Elizabeth married Garland J. Burroughs on November 3, 1937 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In 1948 they moved from their farm in Silver Creek to their farm in Center Township, where she helped her husband with the farm.
In 1970 she began work at Northern Engraving, retiring from their quality control department in 1990. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and her grandchildren. Years ago, she and her husband Garland were active, going to dances and playing cards with their friends. Her home was always open to friends and family.
Elizabeth is survived by four children;

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her spouse Garland on March 21, 1993, also by six siblings; Lucile Becker, Ann Zoll, Rosella Becker, Thresa McCabe, George Becker and Allie Becker.
Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2002 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Msgr. Funke officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane, Lansing, IA.

Keith Moore, age 38 of Englewood Colorado and formerly of New
Albin, Iowa died Monday, September 2, 2002 at his home in Engelwood, CO.
Keith was born in Waukon on March 27, 1964 to James and Virginia (Ferring) Moore. He graduated from Kee High in Lansing in 1982, also graduated from Luther College in Decorah with a degree in English and Communications. Later, Keith graduated from NE Missouri Community College in Kirksville Missouri and later received a Ph.D.. in English and Communication from the University of Colorado in Denver, CO.
Keith taught at Teiko College and Ararahoe Community College, both in Denver. He also was a Standup Comic for over ten years performing throughout the United States, primarily in Colorado. While living in Colorado Keith enjoyed Trout Fishing and Skiing.

Vivian M. Davies, 76 of McGregor, IA, died Saturday, August 17,
2002 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, IA following
a short illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 22, 2002 at the United Methodist Church with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery both in McGregor.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor and one hour prior to services at the church.
She is survived by her husband Earl; one daughter Deb Davies of Prairie du Chien, WI; two sons: Dennis and Gwen Davies of Sioux Falls, SD, Dan and Debra Davies of McGregor, IA; grandchildren: Andy, Jonathan, and Laura Davies, Joshua Kraft and Shawn Kraft; great grandchildren Trinity Davies and John Kraft; brother Donald and wife Lois Knapp; sister: Justine Sawvell; dear friend Hazel Schomp and several nieces and nephews.
Vivian was born July 16, 1926 to Archie and Violet (Kohl) Knapp on the family farm in Marquette, IA. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1943 and began work at Fire Marine Insurance in Dubuque.
She married Earl Davies on June 23, 1946 at the United Methodist Church in McGregor. Together they worked with Earl’s parents at McGregor Locker and Grocery, eventually owning the business for nearly 45 years.
During the 1950s, Vivian worked with Earl in his photography studio mainly coloring photographs, but also helped in a variety of ways.
She taught Sunday School and was active in U.M.C.W. for many years. Vivian always put her family first. Her children and especially her grandchildren, were the light of her life.
Marie Katherine Collins
Marie K. Collins, 95 of McGregor, IA died Saturday, August 17, 2002 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at St. Mary’s Church with burial in the church cemetery in McGregor, IA.
Friends may call on Wednesday at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home of McGregor assisted the family.
She is survived by four sons: Tommy (Dorothy) Collins of Cedar Rapids, IA, Duane Collins of East Dubuque, IL, Darrel (Barbara) Collins of LaCrescent, MN, Herb (JoAnne) Collins of McGregor, IA; three daughters: Dorothy Molony of Bernard, IA, Karen (Jim) McCarthy of Des Moines, IA, Connie Boland of Prairie du Chien, WI, 23 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and one sister Luwene Peck in Calif.
Marie was born September 3, 1907 on West Ridge near Waukon, IA to Frank and Margaret (Griffin) Drew.
She married Martin Collins on November 29, 1929 at Waukon, IA. They moved to Dubuque, IA in 1942 and in 1945 moved to McGregor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Martin on February 25, 1995, one Grandson Rick, her siblings: Pearl, Jimmy, Walter, Francis, Cyril, Harry, Lawrence and Paul.
Ellen LaVon Clancy-Betsinger, age 82 of Lansing, died Thursday,
August 15, 2002 at Thornton Manor in Lansing, IA.
Ellen LaVon was born in Lansing on September 29, 1919 to James and Violet (Danes) Clancy.
She was married to Cletus Betsinger on May 11, 1937 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1974.
In 1982 she moved to St. Charles, IL, returning to Lansing in 1990. Ellen loved to cook, play cards and spend time with her family. Also caring for her poodle, Molly.
