Jack W. Worley
Jack W. Worley, 71, of Hoschton, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Born in Banks County, Mr. Worley was a son of the late Reuben and Carrie Davis Worley.
He had resided in Barrow County for most of his life and was a former resident of Athens. Mr. Worley was a barber and was a member of Bethabra Baptist Church.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 24, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Terry Hawkins and Jack Burgess officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Worley is survived by his wife, Sue Fleeman Worley, Hoschton; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Shelli Craig, Hoschton, and Donnie and Becky Parker, Oxford; grandson, Seth Craig, Hoschton; sisters, Ruby Standridge, Jefferson, Mildred Greene, Hull, and Myrtle Lawson, Nicholson; and two brothers, Roy Worley, Helen, and Bobby Worley, Commerce.

Emory P. Morrison
Emory Paul Morrison, 64, of Commerce, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Morrison was born November 6, 1937, in Jackson County, a son of the late Jessie Preston and Edna Wood Morrison.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Bill Manus officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Morrison is survived by his wife, Margot Andes Morrison, Commerce; two sons, Mike Morrison and Stanley Morrison, both of Commerce; two daughters, Connie Deardorff, Watkinsville, and Shirley Hill, Nicholson; three brothers, Darold Morrison and Franklin Morrison, both of Athens, and Larry Morrison, Monroe; and eight grandchildren.

George P. Anglin
George Paul Anglin, 72, of Colbert, died Saturday, May 25, 2002.
Born in Madison County, Mr. Anglin was a son of the late Waymon Elmer and Ella Louise Hunsinger Anglin.
He had been employed with Westinghouse and was a member of Macedonia Holiness Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 27, at Macedonia Holiness Church with the Rev. William Anglin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wayne McClain, Jason Baxter, Carter Dove, Mark Highland, Rusty Chandler and Jeff Anglin served as pallbearers.
Mr. Anglin is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Strickland Anglin; six daughters, Carol Paulette Anglin, Bowman, Linda Bernice Highland and Debra Lynn Anglin, both of Danielsville; Barbara McClain, Comer, Audrey Diane Jackson, Nicholson, and Stacie Marie Anglin, Colbert; two sons, George Paul Anglin Jr. and Richard Russell Anglin, both of Colbert; three sisters, Irene Thompson, Bonnie Sue West and Ella Mae Dove, all of Ila; three brothers, Ardis Anglin, Waymon Anglin and Jessie Anglin, all of Danielsville; 21 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Nettie S. Moore
Mrs. Nettie Sue Moore, 89, of Nicholson, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Moore was born June 22, 1912, in Madison County, a daughter of the late Tom M. and Emma Lou Perry Kesler. 
She was a homemaker and was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie James Moore.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Antioch United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Cathy officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Moore, Center; one daughter, Janie Potts, Jackson; two brothers, Claud Kesler and John Kesler, both of Nicholson; one sister, Sara Farmer Duren, Commerce; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Claude A. Vinson
Claude Argentine Vinson, 65, of Commerce, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Vinson was born January 9, 1937. He was a son of Ruby Jarrells Vinson, Commerce, and the late George Vinson.
Mr. Vinson was a retired retail businessman, having worked with a grocery store. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Jefferson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses with Minister Donald Christoff officiating. Burial will be in Tabor Chapel Cemetery, Ila.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Vinson is survived by his wife, Josephine Vinson, Commerce; six sisters, Betty Beasley, Danielsville, Gladys Haley, College Park, Sara Harrison, Geneva Johnson and Essie Vinson, all of Commerce, and Albertha Rucker, Athens; one brother, Leo Vinson, Atlanta; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson.

Sergeant 
Philip R. Cooke
Retired Sr. Master Sergeant Philip Randolph Cooke, 83, of Commerce, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Georgia War Veterans Home, Augusta, following a decade long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Mr. Cooke was born in Lake City, Kan., on February 9, 1919, to the late Frank and Gertrude Cooke.
He was a member of Lake City Kansas United Methodist Church and was a 50-year member of the Mason Lodge of Lake City, Kan.
Mr. Cooke served in the U.S. Air Force in France (1945), Alaska (1946-47), Berlin, Germany (1948-49) and Eniwetok Atoll (1951). His last overseas tour was in Newfoundland (1954-57). Cooke was assigned to the New York Air Defense Sector at McGuire in July 1957, where he served as a directorate of communications as the NCOIC of the Systems Technical Coordinator Division which was responsible for maintaining the current status of and locating malfunctions in communications and electronics equipment in the nation’s First SAGE Direction Center. During his service at the New York Air Defense Sector SAGE Center, Sr./M/Sgt. Cooke designed a circular computer which combined necessary information from hundreds of communication circuits that were contained in a variety of reference sources, including charts, diagrams and card files into a single source, and reduced this procedure to a single operation. The effect of the computer was widespread since the Bell Telephone Laboratory adopted its design. This computer was only one of many inventions which Sr./M/Sgt. Cooke made and which are still in wide use in the telecommunications world. 
He relocated to Commerce after retiring from the Air Force and joined the Commerce Telephone Company known today as Alltel. Cooke retired from Alltel in 1984, with 20 years of service.
In 1973-75, Mr. Cooke served as the Commander in Chief of the Commerce Veterans Foreign War Post 5279. During his command, he was honored in 1973-74 as an all-state team post commander of the VFW Posts of Georgia. Mr. Cooke was probably most known in the Commerce community as the “gentleman that daily raised and lowered the American flag at the northern end of Broad Street in Commerce for more than 20 years.”
He was married to the former Sue Lane Tallant, Canton, for more than 52 years. Mr. Cooke was also survived by five children and their families, Diane and Henry Vaughn, Homer; Alan and Connie Cooke, Commerce, and their children, Cohen and Katie; Anna and Sonny Porter, Commerce, and their children, Jamie and Allison; Phyllis Cooke, Commerce, and her daughters, Christy and Dana Westmoreland; Samuel and Sandra Cooke, Commerce, and their son, J.T. Whitsel; one sister, Alice Cooke Vanderplus, Harper, Kan.; and one brother, Rex Cooke, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Graveside services were held with full military honors at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or to the Georgia War Veterans Home, Augusta.

Tucker Pimpo
Tucker Pimpo, 12, of St. Marys, a former resident of Jefferson, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at his residence.
A native of Fulton County, Tucker had lived in Camden County for the past five years. He was a sixth grade student at St. Marys Middle School, where he participated in the recreation program in baseball, basketball and football. Tucker was a member of the Camden Rally Cats Traveling Baseball Team, playing the position of pitcher, short stop and left fielder. He was also a member of Southeast Community Church, St. Marys, and the 180 Crew Youth Group.
Tucker was preceded in death by his grandfather, Webster G. Samples.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Camden County High School Civic Auditorium with Pastor Steve Curtis officiating. Funeral services were also held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson with the Rev. Cary Hillard officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson.
Survivors include his parents, Mark and Tracy Pimpo, St. Marys; sister, Mcall Pimpo, St. Marys; and grandparents, Peggy Samples Strickland, St. Marys, and Richard and Mona Pimpo, Strongville, Ohio.

Pauline Bradberry
Mrs. Pauline Bradberry, 87, of Winder, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at her residence.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Bradberry was born November 3, 1914, a daughter of the late Ison F. Hogan and Mollie Mosley Hogan.
She was a retired seamstress with Carwood Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Union Baptist Church. Mrs. Bradberry was preceded in death by her husband, Connie W. Bradberry.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26, in Smith’s Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Ronald Hewatt officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bobby J. and Emily Bradberry, Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Tommy Pafford, Commerce; two sisters, Clara Puckett and Edna Freeman, both of Winder; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pearl W. Shell
Mrs. Pearl Westbrooks Shell, 84, of Sugar Hill, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Shell was a lifelong resident of Sugar Hill. She was a homemaker and was a member of Level Creek United Methodist Church, Suwanee.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Level Creek United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jeff Appling and Hulon Hill officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Shell is survived by her husband of 61 years, Louie Shell, Sugar Hill; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Bill White, Sugar Hill; god son, Alfred Shope, Idaho; grandchildren, Tommy and Kathy Clark, Commerce, and P.J. Martin and Tara Martin, both of Sugar Hill; great-grandchildren, Christian and Caleb Clark, Commerce; sisters, Betty Martin and Carrie Lou McDaniel, both of Buford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sarah R. Proctor
Mrs. Sarah Rebecca Hunnicutt Mauldin Proctor, 84, formerly of Lakemont and Clayton, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Lakeshore Heights Nursing Center, Gainesville.
Born September 7, 1917, in Mathis (Lakemont), Mrs. Proctor was a daughter of the late Isaac John Harvey Hunnicutt and Martha Lydia McMurray.
She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Proctor was the wife of the late Clyde E. Mauldin for 25 years, and the wife of the late Eugene Proctor for nine years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Harvey Hunnicutt and John Mathis Hunnicutt, and a sister, Annie Belle Hunnicutt.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, in Daniels Chapel of Daniels Mortuary & Crematory, Clayton, with the Rev. Paul Gipson of Rocky Grove Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Wiley Presbyterian Cemetery. Stephen Mauldin, James A. Mauldin, Joshua Mauldin, Joseph Mauldin, Mike Gunter and Jimmy Craft served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three sons, Marvin Edward Mauldin, Savannah, James Thomas Mauldin, Mableton, and Harold Robert Mauldin, Jefferson; brother, Hugh Graves Hunnicutt, Macon; sister, Martha Vashti Pearson, Centre, Ala.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

James E. Mintz
James Ellery Mintz, 65, of Maysville, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Banks County, Mr. Mintz was born November 15, 1936, to the late Watson “Tood” Mintz and Bessie Jane Hooper Mintz.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Mintz was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Helen Hinsley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Dwayne Ryals and Paul Morris officiating. Burial will be in the Mintz-Anderson Cemetery.
Mr. Mintz is survived by his wife of 44 years, Juanita Mealor Mintz, Maysville; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Wanda Mintz, Lula, Mike and Katrina Mintz, Maysville, and Jeff and Terri Mintz, Oakwood; daughter, Patricia Mintz Patrick, Maysville; brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Eula Mae Mintz, Maysville; brother-in-law, Doug Hinsley, Maysville; special friend, Johnny Thomas, Oakwood; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hilda and Lewis Ward, Maysville, and Texas and James Hortman, Roberta; sister, Joyce Denton, Maysville; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

Ruby M. Reece
Mrs. Ruby M. Reece, 92, of Winder, formerly of Hoschton, died Sunday, May 26, 2002.
Born in Weekly County, Tenn., Mrs. Reece was a daughter of the late Joseph and Fannie Brawner Myrick. She was the wife of the late A.C. Reece.
Mrs. Reece was a homemaker and was a member of Hoschton United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Marion F. Reece, and a sister, Nell Clouse.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Darrell McGinnis officiating. Burial was in the Hoschton City Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Edna Sell, Hoschton; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth Adams
Mrs. Ruth Adams, 72, of Hull, died Sunday, May 26, 2002.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Clifford Melvin and Vella Gooch Bradley.
She was employed as a greeter with Wal-Mart at Banks Crossing and was a member of Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, Orin “Big” Adams.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Passmore officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Russ Adams, Lee Adams, Ronnie Williams, Ricky Busbin, Kenny Bradley and Jerry Bird served as pallbearers.

Lonnie B. Chambers
Mrs. Lonnie Belle English Chambers, 87, of Commerce, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
A native of Houston County, Mrs. Chambers was born January 15, 1915, a daughter of the late Will and Fannie Cotton English.
She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Chambers was preceded in death by her husband, John Chambers.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26, in the Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery, Maysville, with the Rev. Bill Carpenter officiating.
Survivors include two sons, James Chambers, Homer, and Johnny Chambers, Commerce; three daughters, Myrtle Cowart and Betty Minish, both of Commerce, and Eloise Gregory, Fairmont; one brother, Floyd English, Hawkinsville; 15 grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

James A. Scogin
James Allen “Black Racer” Scogin, 60, of Colbert, died Thursday, May 23, 2002.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Scogin was the son of Robert Scogin and the late Mary Louise Carter Scogin. He was the grandson of the late Robert “Bill” and Annie Louise Goss Scogin and the late Harvey and Ester Carter. Following the death of his mother, Mr. Scogin was raised by his aunt, Azilee Nation. 
He was an electrician and was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Scogin also raced cars on dirt tracks and was very involved with his grandson’s racing team, JSR.
“He was loved and respected by all,” said family members.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Madison Chapel, with the Rev. Albert Vaughn officiating. Burial was in the Kirk-Scogin Family Cemetery, Colbert. Shaun Hardman, Jason Elrod, Scott Lance, Michael Scogin, Ronnie Scogin and Keith Thompson served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Mildred Jean Henderson, 59, of Com-merce, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at her residence following a brief illness.
Mrs. Henderson was born September 16, 1942, in Jackson County, to the late Robert Lee Embrick and Annie Fedricks Embrick.
She was a retired cook and was a member of Berea Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce, with the Rev. Len Bernat officiating.

Kasey M. Leachman
Kasey Marie Leachman, infant daughter of Walter Leachman and Sherry Embrick, Hull, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Kasey was born January 21, 2002, in Clarke County.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Bill Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Howington Cemetery, Nicholson.

Leon M. Ray
Leon M. Ray, 62, of Homer, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Emory Hospital, Atlanta.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Ray was the son of Jimmie Pritchett Ray, Homer, and the late Ottis Ray.
Mr. Ray was the Mayor of Homer and a member of Homer Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Georgia Mountain Development Committee and a member of the Banks County Cattleman’s Association.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at Homer Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Crabbe and Jerry Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Banks Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Ray is survived by his wife, Bonnie Whitlock, Homer; son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Kristen Ray, Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Timmy Duckett, Hollingsworth Community; sisters, Joyce Boswell and Jane Hardman, both of Homer; and grandchildren, Ethan and Brittani Duckett, Hollingsworth Community.

Mrs. Margaret H. Johnson, 70, of Gainesville, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Born in Anderson, S.C., Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Roy Hunter and Decie Mae Wallace. She lived in the Gainesville Mill Village for several years and lived the rest of her life in Hall County. Mrs. Johnson was a long-time member of Sardis Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Tracy Elrod.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Marlon Thomas officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, of 52 years, Loyd A. Johnson, Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Garry Pribble, Gainesville, Linda and Ron Whitfield, Springfield, Tenn., and Terri and Richard Horne, Athens, South Jackson; granddaughter and husband, Alison and Sam Buffington, Athens; grandsons, Mason Horne, Athens, South Jackson, and Jim Whitfield, Springfield, Tenn.; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Crowder, Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Etheleen Grether, Virginia Beach, Va.; special niece and nephew, Sandy and Jack Schultz, Concord, N.C.; very dear friends, Shirley Simmons, Spencer, Tenn., and Pat and Russ Theriault, Macon; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Memorial Park Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Walter Thomas Sr. 
Walter “Buster” Thomas Sr., 94, Nicholson, formerly of Crawford, died Saturday, May 18, 2002. 
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Boykin and Jannette Thomas and was the widower of Lola Jarvis Thomas. 
He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by a daughter, Janeva Nelson. 
Services were held at noon Saturday, May 25, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Gresham officiating. Burial was in Jennings Cemetery. 
Survivors include four daughters, Claria McComb and Montyne Simmons, both of Nicholson, Agnes Robinson, Dalton, Ill., and Erbityne Simmons, Atlanta; five sons, Roosevelt Wise, Decatur, Lasalle Thomas, Carlton, Esa Thomas, Acworth, and Walter Thomas and Douglas Thomas, both of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters, Mary J. Smith and Essie Tiller, both of Crawford, Ruby Taylor, Lexington, and Lola Waller, Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Sam Thomas, Crawford; 36 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren. 
Jones Lexington Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Janet B. Williams
Ms. Janet Bennett Williams, 66, Athens, died Sunday, May 26, 2002. 
A native of Rupert, W.Va., Ms. Williams was a daughter of General Beard and Mabel Allman. 
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kitty Bennett. 
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Wallace Memorial Park, Greenbrier, W.Va.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Smith, Athens, and Sandy Campbell, Commerce; three sons, Lawrence Bennett, Rupert, W.Va., George Bennett, High Point, N.C., and Jimmy Williams, Hull; one sister, Joanne Baker, Atlanta; one brother, Danny Beard, Atlanta; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
