Mrs. Mary Lou Carroll

Mrs. Mary Lou Carroll, 74, of Hwy. 382, Ellijay, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, at the Gilmer Nursing Home.

Mrs. Carroll is survived by her daughter, Betty Reece, Ellijay; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Services were Sunday, December 2, at 2 p.m. from the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Stover officiating.

Interment was in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Paul Wright

Mr. Paul Wright, 71, of Progress Rd., Ellijay, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001.

Services will be Thursday, December 6, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Church Cemetery.

A complete obituary will be announced at a later date by Bernhardt Funeral Home.

James Arvil Davis
Mr. James Arvil Davis, 69, of Roundtop Road, Ellijay, died Saturday, December 8, 2001, in the St. Joseph's Hospital.

Mr. Davis was born November 17, 1932, in Gilmer County, the son of Claude Monroe Davis and Mandy Ulema Kay Davis. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, a veteran having served in the U.S. Army, Korean Conflict, and the owner and operator of City Motors in Ellijay. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alene Davis.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Alene and James Vick, Ellijay; sisters-in-law, Geneva Davis, Ruby Quarles, and Pat Sanford, all of Ellijay, and Ordell Dean, Jasper; and brother-in-law, Alfred L. Pierce, Ellijay.

Services were Wednesday, December 12, at 2 p.m., from the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with Rev. Wallace Parks, Rev. Jerry Clayton, and Rev. Paul Richards officiating. Music was by the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Choir, and James and Evelyn Hensley.

Pallbearers were Darrell Davis, Travis Davis, Calvin Pierce, Josh Pierce, Larry Pierce, Ricky Pierce, Freddie Vick, and Michael Vick.

Interment followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Louie Clyde Ellis

Mr. Louie Clyde Ellis, 85, of Williamston, S.C., died Monday, December 10, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Ellis was born in Williamston, the son of Samuel Mose and Eva Cargill Ellis. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills, was a member of Williamston Masonic Lodge #24, Williamston Lions Club and Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Mose Ellis, and Eddie Ellis both of South Carolina, and Daniel Ellis, Ellijay; brothers, Marvin Ellis, and Dennis Ellis, both of South Carolina; sister, Thelma Durham, South Carolina; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, December 13, at 2 p.m. from the Gary Mortuary Chapel, of Pelzer, S.C., with Dr. Dale Levan officiating.

Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Violet Lou Westfall Mullinax

Mrs. Violett Lou Westfall Mullinax, 83, of Talona Mt. Rd., Ellijay, died Sunday, December 9, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. Mullinax was born January 30, 1918, in Clay County, W. Va., the daughter of Hirum Edward and Bertha Margaret Lee Mullinax. She was a housewife and member of the Mountain View Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Alden M. Mullinax; sons, David Mullinax, Ohio, and William Mullinax, Ellijay; and one grandchild.

Services were Wednesday, Dec.12, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Reece officiating. Music was by the ladies choir of Mountain View Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Ricky Reece, Sidney Pulliam, Paul Mullinax, Anthony Mullinax, Jason Bernhardt, and Larry Mullinax.

Interment was in the New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Feilda Waldrop Shaw

Mrs. Feilda Waldrop Shaw, 71, of Penland St., Ellijay, died Saturday, December 8, 2001, in North Georgia Medical Center.

Mrs. Shaw was born September 15, 1930, in Ft. Worth, Texas, the daughter of Samuel and Catherine Hazel Underwood Waldrop. She was a homemaker and of the Church of Christ faith.

She is survived by her daughters, Feilda Motes, Marilyn Wheeler, and Joyce Stanley, all of Ellijay; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great -grandchildren.

Graveside services were Tuesday, December 11, at 11 a.m., from the Yukon Cemetery with Pastor James Peel officiating.

Bernhardt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Effie Armittie McClure Stover

Mrs. Effie Armittie McClure Stover, 84, of Bucktown Road, Ellijay, died Friday, December 7, 2001, at the Gilmer Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stover was born June 7, 1917, in Gilmer County, the daughter of John Andrew McClure and Nancy Jane Sanford McClure. She was a housewife, a member of the River Hill Baptist Church, and was the widow of Jim Tate Stover.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise Stover, Canton; sons and daughter in-law, Lloyd Stover, and Jimmy and Arwanda Stover, all of Ellijay; 10 grandchildren; 31 great- grandchildren; and nine great- great- grandchildren.

Services were Sunday, December 9, at 3 p.m. from the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Cantrell, Rev. Ed O'Neal, and Rev. Calvin Grogan officiating. Music was by the Clayton Family. Pallbearers were William Stover, Lewis Cantrell, Russell Hood, Euel Southern, and Les Cantrell.

Interment was in the Tickanetley Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brader Chastain Weaver

Mrs. Brader Chastain Weaver, 83, of Hudson-Martin Rd., Ellijay, died Wednesday, December 5, 2001, in the Gwinnett Medical Center.

Mrs. Weaver was born October 7, 1918, in Gilmer County, the daughter of Junie and Emma Viola Bearden Weaver. She was a former employee of Robertshaw Company, a homemaker, and member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard "Budge" Weaver.

She is survived by her children, June Waddell, Norcross, Sue Aldea, Suwanee, Louie Weaver, Auburn, Larry Weaver, Snellville, Linda Finn, Cumming, Debbie Wheelus, Conyers, and Lisa Kukla, California; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, and Cecil Weaver, Woodstock.

Services were Saturday, December 8, at 2 p.m. from the Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Russell Hood officiating. Music was by Darryl Jones and the church choir.

Pallbearers were Jeff Johnson, Neal Johnson, Brad Waddell, Ben Massey, Corey Weaver, Joe Finn, Brad Wheelus, and Don Walker.

Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dena Mae Norton

Mrs. Dena Mae Norton, 90, of N. Dixie Avenue, Cartersville, died Monday, December 3, 2001, at Starcrest of Cartersville.

Mrs. Norton was born in Gilmer County on March 1, 1911. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith, and was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Norton.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James W. (Jimmy) and Margie Norton, Cartersville; daughter, Sarah Curry, Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were Thursday, December 6, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Barnette and Rev. Charles McPherson officiating.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Interment followed in the Eastview Cemetery under the direction of R. Dudley Barton & Son Funeral Home in Adairsville.

Fletcher Paul Wright

Mr. Fletcher Paul Wright, 71, of Progress Rd., Ellijay, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001, in the Fannin Regional Hospital.

Mr. Wright was born January 2, 1930, in Gilmer County, the son of Fletcher and Delma Reece Wright. He was retired from Meadow Gold Dairies and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Patterson Wright; son, James Paul Wright, Ellijay; daughters, Joyce Pinson, Blue Ridge, and Connie Lynn O'Neal, Ellijay; sisters, Carol Mulkey, and Vercil Miller, both of Ellijay; brothers, Harold Wright and Gene Wright, both of Ellijay; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services were Thursday, December 6, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Emuel Sanford officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford.

Pallbearers were Devin Wright, Randy Hamrick, David Guthrie, Frank Elliott, Ronnie Wright and Bennie Lunsford.

Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Church Cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

William Osborne Miller

Mr. William Osborne Miller, 71, of Cripple Creek Rd., Ellijay, died Sunday, December 16, 2001, in the Fannin Regional Hospital.

Mr. Miller was born August 10, 1930, in Gilmer County, the son of Robert and Audrey Johnson Miller. He was a textile worker, and member of the Ellijay Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Vercil Wright Miller; daughter, Diane Miller, South Carolina; and brother, Rev. Edmund Miller, Ellijay.

Services were Tuesday, December 18, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Minister Butch Jones officiating. Singing was led by Barry Kingsley.

Pallbearers were Johnny Sluder, Wayne Sluder, George Hall, Tom Hall, Temple Hill, Bill Key, Quinton Miller, and Edmund Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Letch Watkins, Mack Logan, Jack Logan, Gus Logan, Ted Logan, Phillip Johnson, and Carl Hill.

Interment was in the Yukon Cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Ronnie Lee Garrett

Mr. Ronnie Lee Garrett, 42, of Squirrel Lane, Ellijay, died Sunday, December 16, 2001, in the Floyd Medical Center.

Mr. Garrett was born November 10, 1959, in Pickens County, the son of Mark Garrett and Evelyn Bradley Garrett. He was a construction worker.

He is survived by his sons, Ronald Garrett and Michael Garrett, both of Ellijay; father, Mark Garrett, Ellijay; and five grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday, December 18, at 11 a.m. from the Berean Baptist Church with Rev. Wallace Parks officiating. Music was by James and Evelyn Hensley.

Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Matthew (Mack) Dockery

Mr. Matthew (Mack) Dockery, 78, of Ebenezer Rd., Ellijay, died Saturday, December 15, 2001, in the St. Joseph Hospital.

Mr. Dockery was born December 10, 1923, in Cherokee County, North Carolina, the son of Sam and Mae Garrett Dockery. He was a saw miller and of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Chadwick Dockery; children, Brenda Goble, Milner, Ricky Dockery, Dahlonega, and Linda Dockery, Ellijay; brother, Mark Dockery, Tennessee; and sister, Martha Foster, Dalton.

Services were Monday, December 17, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Hood officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford.

Pallbearers were Doug Walker, Joey Franklin, Kenny Payne, Terry Dockery, Jeremy Payne, and Randy Chadwick.

Interment was in the Scrougetown Cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Charles John Sumner

Mr. Charles John Sumner, 68, of Chatsworth Highway, Ellijay, died Monday, December 10, 2001.

Mr. Sumner was born July 13, 1933, in Gilmer County, the son of Franklin Nathaniel Sumner and Eunice Plemmons Sumner. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ellijay, a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War, a member of Oak Bowery Masonic Lodge #81 and the Ellijay Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, president of the Gilmer County Saddle Club, member and served on the judges panel of the National Racking Horse Association, and was the co-owner of Sumner Brothers Underground Utilities.

He is survived by his wife, Inez Teague Sumner; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Shannon Sumner, Ellijay; grandson, Michael "Chase" Sumner, Ellijay; sisters and brothers-in-law, Buren and Ray Hyde, and Dorothy and Mack Logan, all of Ellijay; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Grace Sumner and Jim and Juanita Sumner, all of Ellijay.

Services were Friday, December 14, at 3 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Ellijay with Rev. Edmund Miller, Dr. Milton Perry, Rev. James Holt and Rev. Chris Chastain officiating. Music was by Matthew Newton, Carol Lively, Jessie White, and the Men's Choir of First Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Carroll Nix, Donald Reece, Ron Gheesling, Jerry Bramlett, Vernon Murray, Ronald West, Jack William, Don Elliott, Michael Sexton, David Davis, Bill Cochran, Jack Logan, Raymond Milton, and Tommy Burk. Honorary pallbearers were Masonic brothers, members of the National Racking Horse Association, and Gilmer County Saddle Club.

Interment was in the Mountaintown Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Clifford Hensley

Mr. Clifford Hensley, 85, of Jasper, died Thursday, December 13, 2001, at the Mountainside Medical Center.

Mr. Hensley was retired from the Georgia Marble Company and a member of the Berean Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Katie Smith Hensley; daughters and sons-in-law, Dorthy and Jimmy Rittenberry, and Mary Nell and C.W. Logan, all of Talking Rock, Betty Jean and Billy Reece, Whitestone, Elaine and Downy Logan, Jasper, and Evelean and Deryl Hyde, Ellijay; brother, Herbert Hensley, Ryo community; sisters, Bonnie Corn, Ranger and Jewell Goble, Ramhurst; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were Sunday, December 16, at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with Rev. Wallace Parks, and Rev. Jerry Nolan officiating. Music was by the James Hensley family.

Pallbearers were Larry Rittenberry, Garry Rittenberry, William Reece, Chad Logan, Greg Logan, and Lamar Logan.

Honorary pallbearers were Shane Logan, Randy Rittenberry, Dustin Sumner, Matthew Hyde, Daniel Rittenberry, and Tim Hyde.

Interment followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Roper Funeral Home of Jasper.

Ms. Maria Jean Getsi

Ms. Maria Jean Getsi, 44, of West Union, Ohio, died Sunday, December 16, 2001, at the Adams County Hospital.

She is survived by her mother, Jeanette Buffington Roop, Ellijay.

Memorial services were Friday, December 21, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Logan Funeral Home with Father Chris Williamson officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford.

Interment was in the Jarrett Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Nathan P. "Pete" Ballew

Mr. Nathan P. "Pete" Ballew, 40, of Ellijay, died Wednesday, December 19, 2001, in the North Georgia Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Debora Lynn Green Ballew; mother, Betty Ballew, Chatsworth; sisters, Charlotte Ballew and Denise Ballew, both of Iowa; brothers, Lamar Ballew, Chatsworth, Michael Ballew, and Arlan Ballew, both of Rocky Face; and sister-in-law, Dedra Hardin, Dalton.

Services were Friday, December 21, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home of Chatsworth with Rev. Bobby Green officiating.

Interment followed in the United Memorial Gardens under the direction of Peeples Funeral Home of Chatsworth.

Rev. Walter Boyd Brookshire

Rev. Walter Boyd Brookshire, 78, of Morristown, Tenn., died Saturday, December 15, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Brookshire was a World War II veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Wilda Weaver Brookshire; daughters and son in-law, Barbara and Tommy Gray, Connecticut, and Beverly Brookshire, New York; one granddaughter; sister, Minerva Barbee, North Carolina; brother-in law, Thomas Snider, Sr., North Carolina.

Services were Tuesday, December 18, at 8 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Mathis, and Rev. Bill Palmer officiating.

Masonic and military graveside services were Wednesday, December 19, at 12 in the Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Shiners Hospital, c/o Morristown Shrine Club, P.O. Box 1300, Morristown, TN 37816.
