Lt. Col. James "Monty" Montgomery Davis

Lt. Col. James "Monty" Montgomery Davis, 46, of Northcutt Road, Ellijay, died Thursday, August 24, 2000, at his residence.

Mr. Davis was born July 12, 1954, in Ellijay, the son of Garvin Davis, Jr. and June Mullinax Davis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was Senior Naval Science Instructor at Lassiter and Pope High Schools in Marietta.

He is survived by his wife, Kitty Davis; daughter, Cassie Davis, Leesburg; parents, Garvin Davis, Jr. and June Davis, Ellijay; sisters and brothers-in-law, Daphne and Roy Duvall, Fla. and Patti and Jerry Vick, Ellijay; father-in-law, Phil Watts; and grandfather, Delmer Mullinax.

Services were Sunday, August 27, at 4 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Ellijay with Dr. Milton Perry, Rev. Edmund Miller and Rev. James Holt officiating. The church sanctuary choir directed by music minister, Scott Eaton.

Pallbearers were Bob Worley, Dexter Morgan, Jerry Vick, Tim Duvall, Zeb Duvall, Roy Duvall, David Westmoreland, and Robert Westmoreland.

Honorary pallbearers were his JROTC students from Lassiter and Pope High Schools, in Marietta, GA.

He was interred at his Northcutt home property. Arrangements were under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Infant Katelyn Cheyanne Eldridge

Infant Katelyn Cheyanne Eldridge, of Anne Mae Lane, Ellijay, died Thursday, August 24, 2000, at the Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.

She was born August 24, 2000, the daughter of Maranda Nicole Eldridge at Hamilton Medical Center.

She is survived by her mother, Maranda Nicole Eldridge, Ellijay; grandparents, Ruth and Kenneth Carroll, and Pearl Eldridge.

Services were Saturday, August 26, 2000, from the Logan Funeral & Chapel with Rev. Chris Tankersley officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford.

Interment followed in the New Way Fellowship Church Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Infant Jessica Ramirez

Infant Jessica Ramirez, of Dalton Street, Ellijay, died at her residence, Monday, August 21, 2000.

She was born August 21, 2000, the daughter of Caterina Ramirez. She is survived by her mother, Caterina Ramirez.

Services were Saturday, August 26, 2000, at 10 a.m. from the Logan Funeral Home & Chapel with Lapetia Stephens officiating.

Interment followed in the Jarrett Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mable Imogene Wright Singer

Mrs. Mable Imogene Wright Singer, 72, of Lumpkin, GA, formerly of Ellijay, died Friday, August 25, 2000, at the Stewart-Webster Hospital in Richland, GA.

Mrs. Singer was born June 10, 1928, in Gilmer County, the daughter of Reba Cochran Wright and E. M. Wright. She attended Brenau College, and had worked for Mallard Frames. She was a member of Ellijay First Baptist Church, Ellijay, Georgia, and she was the widow of Frank S. Singer, Jr.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny M. and Wanda Singer, and Frank S. Singer III, all of Lumpkin, GA.; two grandsons; and one great grandson

Graveside services were Sunday, August 27, at 2 p.m. in the Northside Cemetery in Lumpkin, GA., with Rev. Jack Ray officiating.

Pallbearers were Jeff Wright, Joel Wright, Jimmy Wright, Scott Law, Keith Butts, and Jimmy Dick Richardson.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Four County Health Care, Richland, GA 31825, or to a favorite charity.

Mrs. Evelyn (E.B.) Byers

Mrs. Evelyn (E.B.) Byers, 65, of Alpharetta, died Thursday, August 24, 2000.

She is survived by her sons, T.C. Martin, Gainesville, and Mark Byers, Ellijay; daughters, Sharon Bottoms, Gainesville, Sandra Scruggs, Dawsonville, and Nena Glenn, Ellijay; sister, Dottie Day, Oakwood; 20 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Services were Sunday, August 27, at 2 p.m. from the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Cedric Halter and Tony Reed officiating.

Interment followed in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell under the direction of Sosebee Funeral Home of Canton.

Edward C. Newton

Mr. Edward C. Newton, 78, of Roberts Ridge Rd., Ellijay, died Wednesday, August 23, 2000.

Mr. Newton was born Sept. 9. 1921, in Gilmer County, the son of the late Jimmy Newton and Oma Hollifeld Newton. He was a construction worker and member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Christine Chadwick Newton; children, Kenneth and Susan Newton, Dalton and Tracy and Lisa Newton, Ellijay; grandchildren, Kristy Newton Ruis and Matthew Newton; sisters, Kelsie Burgess, Canton, Ethel Henderson and Trances Todd, both of Ellijay; brothers, Cecil and Grady Newton, both of Dalton and James W. Newton, Ellijay.

Services were Saturday, August 26, at 2 p.m. from h Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Taylor and Rev. Mark Kelly officiating. Music was by the church choir.

Pallbearers were Matthew Newton, Scott Ruis, Kent Sanford, Dennis Todd, Danny Strickland, Alan May, Dennis Vinson, and John Sumner.

Mr. Walter Baliles, 73, of Big Creek Rd., Ellijay, died Saturday, August 26, 2000, at the home of his daughter.

Mr. Baliles was born June 10, 1927, the son of Elliott Baliles and Mae Bearden Baliles. He was a farmer.

He is survived by his daughter, Dianne Hughes, Ellijay; sisters, Lola Brooks and Vila Stanley both of Ellijay; brother, Worth Baliles, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Services were Monday, August 28, 2000, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Naylor officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford.

Pallbearers were Kevin Hughes, Travis Hughes, Eddie Brooks, Wade Brooks, Fred Brooks, Claude Taylor.

Interment was in the New Liberty Church cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lanette Bannister Sumner

Mrs. Lanette Bannister Sumner , 80, of Bainbridge, died Monday, September 4, 2000, at Odyssey Hospice at Dekalb General Hospital in Decatur.

She is survived by sons, John W. Sumner, Jr., Decatur and Bob Sumner, Athens; brother, Ray Bannister, Coolidge; sister, Celia Hill, Ellijay; and sister in-law, Mrs. Sol C. Sumner, Stone Mountain.

Services were Wednesday, September 7, at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Ivey Funeral Home with Dr. Leroy C. Spinks officiating.

Interment and graveside services were in the Big Ochlocknee Baptist Church Cemetery at 12 p.m.

Mrs. Isabelle Arozina Newton Manning

Mrs. Isabelle Arozina Newton Manning, 85, of Southside Church St., Ellijay, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at North Georgia Medical Center.

Mrs. Manning was born November 6, 1914, the daughter of Thomas Pinkney Newton and Jane Wilson Newton. She was the wife of the late Bennie Franklin Manning, member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was a housewife.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, LeRoy Manning, and James P. and Lenora Manning, all of Ellijay; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services were Thursday, August 31, at 2 p.m. from the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Butch Jones officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford and Steve Holcomb.

Pallbearers were Cecil Dempsey, B.J. Burgess, Arvil Burgess, Randall Burgess and Bill Chadwick.

Interment was in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Mrs. Oleeta Henson Moore

Mrs. Oleeta Henson Moore, 74, died September 3, 2000, in the Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Mrs. Moore is survived by her son, William Etheridge Moore, Jr., N.C.; sister, Mrs. Kenneth Garland, Ellijay; and three grandchildren .

Services were Wednesday, September 6, at 11 a.m. from the Stanly Memorial Chapel in North Carolina with Rev. Harold McDonald and Rev. Allen Belton officiating.

Interment was in the Stanly Gardens of Memory under the direction of Stanly Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilma Hicks

Mrs. Wilma Hicks, 83, of Chatsworth, died Thursday, August 31, 2000, in the Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.

Mrs. Hicks was born October 31, 1916 in Wichita Falls, Texas, and was a retired waitress.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Hooker, Chatsworth; one grandson; one stepgrandson; sister-in-law, Linda Bernhardt, Ellijay; and brother-in-law, Richard Hicks, Ellijay.

Services were Saturday, September 1, at 4 p.m. from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Naylor officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford.

Interment was in the Yukon Cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Arthur Butch Williams

Mr. Arthur Butch Williams, 53, of Bates Dr., Ellijay, died Monday, August 28, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Williams was born December 7, 1947, in Fulton County, the son of Harold Milton Williams and Miriam Bobo Williams. He was a respiratory therapist, and was married to the late Margaret Gill Williams.

He is survived by his son, Michael Williams, Ellijay.

Memorial services will be Monday, September 11, at 2 p.m. from the Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation in memory of Mr. Williams.

Charles L. "Lindy" Ferguson, Sr.

Mr. Charles L. "Lindy" Ferguson, Sr., 72, of Rome, died Monday, August 28, 2000, following an extended illness.

Mr. Ferguson was born in Toombsboro, May 27, 1928, the son of W.W. and Harriet Ferguson. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy P. Ferguson; children, Patsy and David Hollingsworth, Bremen, Linda and Steve Moles, Ellijay, Becky and Charles L. "Pudgy" Ferguson, Jr., and Richard C. Ferguson, all of Rome; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters, Myrtle Russell, Bonaire, Bertha Gamble, S.C. and Frances Smith, Macon; and brother, Robert Chester Ferguson, Bonaire.

Services were Thursday, August 31, at 2 p.m. from the Oaknoll Chapel of the Dempsey Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Cater officiating.

Pallbearers were Mark Raiford, Tommy Sealock, Leslie Sexton, Danny Ferguson, Greg Free, and Gene Lane.

Honorary pallbearers were Rufus Barton, Paul Haley, Ed Allen, Clayton Ward, and the Marvin Davis Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Debbie Jones Coram

Mrs. Debbie Jones Coram, 38, of Adairsville died Sunday, September 10, 2000, in the Columbia Redmond Regional Hospital in Rome following a brief illness.

Mrs. Coram was born in Gordon County on October 26, 1961, the daughter of Bobby Gene Jones and Wanda Willix Jones. She was a housewife, and was employed by Raymond Pate Used Cars, and was a member of the Smyrna Gospel Tabernacle in Chatsworth.

She is survived by her husband, Aley Coram, Adairsville; daughter, Makayla Marie Coram, Adairsville, parents, Bobby Gene Jones and Wanda Willix Jones; brothers, John Jones, Adairsville, and Hank Desha, Calhoun; and sister, Gina Walker, Adairsville.

Services were Tuesday, September 12, at 2 p.m. from the Smyrna Gospel Tabernacle with the Rev. Freeman Hamrick, Rev. Jerry Stewart, and Rev. Wayne Philbeck officiating.

Pallbearers were David Walker, David Coram, Rusty Hopkins, Larry Long, Howell Avery, and Randy Parker.

Interment was in the Union Grove Baptist Cemetery in Calhoun under the direction of Thomas Funeral Home of Calhoun.

Mrs. Mattie W. Price, 84, of Conyers died Thursday, September 7, 2000.

Mrs. Price was born February 4, 1916, in Fayetteville. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Price.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Sandra Price, Ellijay, and Jerry and Theresa Price, Loganville; brother, Eugene Warr, College Park; sister, Opal W. Carden, Lake City; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Lois Dean Goodwin, 66, of East Ellijay, died Tuesday, September 5, 2000, in the Atlanta Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, Duain Goodwin; daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie and Jack Durham, Adairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Kim Goodwin, Acworth; four grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Tina and Harlan Akins, Chatsworth, and Shirley and Tom McDaniel, Knoxville.

John Anderson Willis

Mr. John Anderson Willis, 84, of Craigtown Road, Ellijay, died Saturday, September 9, 2000, at the North Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Willis was born September 28, 1915, in Ellijay, the son of Joseph Anderson Willis and Nancy Lucinda Griggs. He was married to the late Mary Elizabeth Carroll Willis, a sawmiller, and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Farrell Hogsed, Patsy Jo and Charles Nichols, Wilma and Randall Patterson, all of Ellijay and Inas and Don Swafford, Chatsworth; sons and daughter-in-law, Paul and Melba Willis, Wash., and Danny Willis, Ellijay; 28 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; sister, Lizzie Kinsey, Dalton; and brother Lum Willis, Eaton.

Services were Tuesday, September 12, at 2 p.m. from the New Way Fellowship Church with Rev. Chris Tankersley, Rev. Glen Arnold, Rev. Richard Buckner, and Rev. Lewis Payne officiating. Music was by Susie Buckner, Pete Peters, Sisie Swanger, Richard Franklin and Tina Martin.

Pallbearers were Michael Hogsed, Billy Hogsed, Robert Hogsed, Nicholas Hogsed, Johnny Craig, Leon Hogsed, Alan Hudson, and Tommy Edens.

Honorary pallbearers were Scott Logan, Joe Stillwell, Bill Griggs, Luther Burgess, Benny Weaver, and Benny Whitaker.

Interment was in the Ballew Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Logan Funeral Home.

Winford Long

Mr. Winford Long, 74, of Miller-Long Rd., Ellijay, died Saturday, September 9, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Long was born April 15, 1926, in Fannin County, the son of Monroe Long and Elizabeth Wilkins Long. He was retired from Lockheed and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Free Long; sons and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Gearldine Long, Austell and Roger Long, Cherry Log; daughters and sons in-law, Jewell and Kenneth Ross, Chatsworth and Joyce and Ronnie Burnette, Dalton; six grandchildren; brothers, Henry Long, Cherry Log and Herman Long, Dial; sisters, Mary Shorter, Va., and Willie Gray, Blue Ridge.

Services were Monday, September 11, at 2 p.m. from the Rock Creek Baptist Church with Rev. John Newton, Rev. James Worley and Rev. Raymond McCranie officiating. Music was by Irene Wofford, the church choir, Rev. Gary Tomberlin and Kala Lanford.

Pallbearers were Aaron Long, Chris, Long, Jason Burnette, Jim Falls, Gearld Long and J.C. Sluder.

Interment followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.
