Claudine Barronton Austin, 90, Jonesboro, died Jan. 14, 2001. She was born Nov. 22, 1910 in Clayton County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Monroe Austin Jr. Services were held at the Carl J. Mowell Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Darrell Hayes officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Wallace Edward Moody 

Wallace Edward Moody, 91, Atlanta, died Jan. 14, 2001. He was born July 25, 1909 in Alabama. He was retired from the John Deer Company as a traffic and claims manager. He was a member of the first graduating class of Berry College, Rome, Ga.; a Boy Scout Director of Troop 81, a member of the First Baptist Church of Cliftondale, and a former member of the West End Baptist and Unicoi Springs Baptist Church. Services were held at the Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, East Point, with interment at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. 

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Thomas E. Moody, Stone Mountain; a grandson, Thomas E. Moody Jr.; a great-grandson, Alex E. Moody, Fayetteville; a great-granddaughter, Morgan Moody, Fayetteville; and granddaughters, Mary Catherine Moody, Fayetteville, and Adrian Lee Moody, Jonesboro.

"Tony" Paul Thornton Benefield, 60, Molena, Ga., died Jan. 16, 2001. He was born March 22, 1940 in Fulton County, Ga. Services were held at the Carl J. Mowell Chapel, Fayetteville, with interment at Woodbury, Ga. City Cemetery. 

Survivors include daughters, Brandi Benefield and Kasey Benefield, both of Fayetteville; sisters, Sue Benefield, Madison and Wanda Alexander, Stockbridge; nephews, Joe David, Acworth, Jay Davis, Madison and Kirby Alexander, Hiram; and nieces, Ronnie Bratton, Stockbridge, Wendy Mason, Madison and Degi Winstead, Douglasville.

Achukutty Elakatt, 69, died Jan. 16, 2001. She was born Jan. 8, 1932 in India. A funeral mass was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Joseph Mullackara officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. 

Survivors include her husband, Matthew Elakatt, Fayetteville; sons, Thomas Elakatt, Fayetteville, Joseph Elakatt, Riverdale, and Simon Elakatt, Chicago; daughters, Marykutty Puthenmadthil, White Plains, N.Y. and Sheeba Cherusaril, Savage, Minn.; a brother, Stephen Puthenpurayil, Las Vegas; and sisters, Cyriac Puthenpurayil and Alleyamma Puthenpurayil, both of India. There are 14 grandchildren.

Jo Ann Morton, 67, Fayetteville, died Jan. 18, 2001. She was born Feb. 22, 1933 in Henry County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Elston Morton. Jeanette Cullen Carrier, 76, Fayetteville, died Jan. 19, 2001. She was born June 7, 1924 in Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard P. Carrier Jr. in 1974. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist. Formerly of Greenfield, Mass. and Boynton Beach, Fla., she had resided in Fayetteville since 1984. 

An affirmation of life service was held at the Carl J. Mowell Chapel, Fayetteville.

Alexander "Lex" Thomas Williams, 19, Fayetteville, died Jan. 19, 2001. He was killed in a snow boarding accident in Keystone, Colo. He was born Aug. 3, 1981 in Clayton County, Ga. 

Services were held at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with Dr. Sam Matthews and the Rev. Jim Ellison officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Services were at the Hillcrest Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Melvin Payne officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Newnan. 

Survivors include daughters Betty Bloce and Joyce Shank, both of Riverdale; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Byron Rondel Harness, 57, Senoia, died Jan. 24, 2001. He was born Jan. 23, 1944 in Detroit, Mich. He had worked for Geyer Construction.

Bobby R. Dean, 57, Newnan, died Jan. 24, 2001. He was born Jan. 28, 1943 in Franklin, Ga. He had been self-employed in grading.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Dean, Newnan; father, Hullett Dean, Franklin, Ga.; sons, Jim Dean and Robert Dean, both of Senoia; a stepson Jonathan Wilder, Sharpsburg; a daughter, Barbara Crews, Newnan; and sisters Estelle Cassell, Franklin, Mary Crump, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Joyce Driver, Hogansville. Walter Clifford Stephens 

Walter Clifford Stephens, 91, died Jan. 26, 2001. He was born May 9, 1909 in Coweta County. He was retired from the maintenance department of the United States Army General Depot at Fort Gilam, Ga. 

Survivors include a son, Clifton and Barbara Stephens, Newnan; brother Robert Stephens, Newnan; grandchildren Chris and Lori Stephens, Newnan; David and Joan Stephens, Ooltewah, Tenn., Mark and Alda Stephens, Woodstock, Ga., and Pat and Kim Stephens, Turin, Ga. There are eight great-grandchildren.

Delbert W. Lynn 

Delbert W. Lynn, 58, United States Army, CWO-4, retired, died Jan. 27. 2001. He was born March 2, 1942 in Sacramento, Calif. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1970 and retired in 1987. He received many medals and commendations, the Bronze Star, and served as a special agent in the Criminal Investigation Division of the Army. 

Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, with a military chaplain officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Newnan. 

Survivors include his wife, Gail Lynn, Sharpsburg; a daughter, Suzann Barkley, Austin, Texas; a stepson, Pat Alexander, Atlanta, Ga.; and parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Lynn, Sacramento, Calif. 

Eunice C. Marks 

Eunice C. Marks, 75, Fayetteville, died Jan. 11, 2001. She was born July 25, 1925 in Carroll County, Miss. 

Services were held at the Carmichael-Hemperley Chapel with the Rev. Dr. John Beyers officiating. Interment was at Greenwood, Atlanta. 

Survivors include a son, James R. Marks, Fayetteville; and grandchildren, Kathryn L. Marks, Joseph L. Marks, and Samuel James Marks.

John M. Cochran 

John M. Cochran, 76, Peachtree City, formerly of Maysville, Ky., died Jan. 12, 2001. He was born March 4, 1924 in Mason County, Ky., the son of John McElroy and Gertrude Irene Vaush Cochran Sr. He was a graduate of Centre College, Danville, Ky. and the Columbia Midshipman's School. He was an elder in the Maysville First Presbyterian Church, a lieutenant in the United States Navy, captain of the LSD-983 during World War II and Korea. He was a member of the Peachtree City Kiwanis Club, Maysville Lions Club, and President of the Associated Industry of Kentucky. 

Memorial services were held at the First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City, with the Rev. Sandra Wilmesherr officiating. 

Survivors include his wife, Cappie Cochran; children, Robert P. Cochran, New York, N.Y., John M. Cochran III, Winder, Ga., Stan C. Opal Grace Howell, 88, Fayetteville, died Jan. 14, 2001. She was born April 21, 1912 in Fayette County, the daughter of Leverett Glenn and Evie McElwaney Jenkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alvin Howell. 

Services were held at the chapel of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Parrish and the Rev. Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. Interment was at the Fayetteville City Cemetery. 

Survivors include sons Glenn and Cathy Howell, Fayetteville, and Dr. Douglas and Deborah Howell, Peachtree City; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lt. Col. William Emmette 'Bill' Nagle 

William Emmette "Bill" Nagle, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force, Retired, died Jan 13, 2001. He was born May 14, 1919 in Tishomingo County, Miss. 

Services were held at the Fayetteville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Stringham, the Rev. Ray King and Kenneth Koon officiating. Interment was at Hill Crest Memory Gardens, Red Bay, Ala.

Pauline Williams Harrell, 91, Peachtree City, died Jan. 18, 2001. She was born March 5, 1909 in Fayette County, the daughter of James Brownie and Hattie Pope Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey T. Harrell, a son, Hewlette Harrell and a daughter, Jeanette H. Davis. 

Services were held at the Fayetteville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Ellis, the Rev. Glenn Stringham and the Rev. Jack Overton officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. 

Survivors include a son, Floyd and Sandra Harrell, Peachtree City; a brother, James Williams, Fayetteville; a sister, Ruth McCrary, Austell; nine grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Frances Emily Hunt, 79, LaGrange, died Jan. 5, 2001. She was born Aug. 13, 1921 in LaGrange, the daughter of the T. F. Davis family. She lived there all of her life and was a member of the Unity Baptist Church. 

Services were at the Jones Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bobby Robinson officiating. Interment was at Grantville City Cemetery, Grantville, Ga. 

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Edward Hunt; and a brother, Tom Davis, Newnan.

Dera Crawford, 81, Sargent, died Jan. 16, 2001. She was born March 18, 1919 in Carroll County, Ga., the daughter of Willie and Lillie Jones Phillips. 

Services were at the Hillcrest Chapel with the Rev. Tony Thompson officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery. 

Survivors include children Wayne Crawford, Douglasville, Virginia Burris, Sargent, and Marvis Crawford, Carrollton; a brother, Frank Phillips, Milledgeville, Ga.; and sisters Helen Brightwell, Newnan, and Rachel Horton, Sargent. There are eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Claire Smith, 89, Rockville, Md., formerly of Newnan, died Jan. 16, 2001. She was born in Coweta County, the daughter of John and Josephine Gable Overby. She was a member of the Newnan First United Methodist Church, moving to Maryland six years ago. 

Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. James Hundley and the Rev. Gary Parrish officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan. 

Survivors include a son, Bruce and Ann Smith, Rockville, Md.; a sister, Katie Richardson, Winston, Ga.; and a grandchild, Brian Smith, Rockville, Md.

Ruth E. Dicks, 90, Newnan, died Jan. 18, 2001. She was born Feb. 15, 1910 in Rulo, Neb., the daughter of Frank and IdaBell Dicks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Jerman. She was a longtime resident of Sioux City, Iowa where she was an elementary school teacher. She also lived in Concord, Calif., where she managed an alternations department for a large department store. She moved in Newnan in 1989. 

Memorial services were in California. 

Survivors include a son, John Jerman, Newnan; grandsons Matthew Jerman, Newnan and John Jerman, Beaverton, Ore.; there are two great-grandsons.

Donald Robert "Hank" Gowdy 

Donald Robert "Hank" Gowdy, 81, Feeding Hills, Mass., died Jan. 19, 2001. He was born March 1, 1919 in Scitico, Conn. He had served in the United States Army in World War II and was a retired engineer. 

Services were at the Curran-Jones Funeral Home, Agawam, Mass. with interment in Hazardville, Conn. 

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Gowdy, Feeding Hills, Conn.; sons William and Nancy Gowdy, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Donald and Rosemary Gowdy Jr., Westfield, Mass.; a stepson, David Granroos, Newnan; a stepdaughter, Lynda Garrett, West Springfield, Mass.; and a brother, Harry Gowdy, Shelburne, Mass. 

There are three grandchildren, four step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.

Raymond E. Young 

Raymond E. Young, 77, Laguna Beach, Fla. died Dec. 30, 2000. He was born in Birmingham, Ala. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the United States Army in 1966. He then become the national director of the United States Job Corps before retiring. Services were held at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, Panama City, Fla. with the Rev. Bruce Raley officiating. Interment was at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Panama City, Fla. 

Survivors include his wife, whom he married April 10, 1942, Lucy Gibson Young; sons, Michael D. Young, Fayetteville, Doug Young, Tyrone, Raymond E. Young Jr., Panama City, and Rand Young, Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Nancy Morris, Americus, Ga., and Donna Austin, Birmingham, Ala. There are 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Raymond Joseph Hereth 

Raymond Joseph Hereth, 81, Tyrone, died Dec. 31, 2000. He was born April 5, 1919 in Erie County, N. Y. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, retiring with 20 years of service. He was also retired from the Georgia State Department of Human Resources as Director of Licenses and Certification with 22 years of service. Services were held at the Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Interment was at College Park Cemetery. 

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nadine J. Hereth, Tyrone; children, Ronald J. Herewith, Buffalo, N. Y., Jack R. Hereth, Alpharetta, Patti King, Denver, Colo., and Nancy Phillips, Peachtree City; and a sister, Mary LaPress, Buffalo, N. Y. There are 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at the Parrott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Rick Long and the Rev. Harold Murphree officiating. Interment was at Westminster Gardens, Peachtree City.

Marcella M. McAvoy Cresviston, 88, Indianapolis, Ind., died Jan. 5, 2001. She was born Aug. 19, 1912 in Marion Ind., the daughter of Leo and Mabel Miller McAvoy. She had worked as a secretary in Marion, also as secretary and was in charge of Purchasing in Arlington Heights, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark S. Creviston in 1969. They had married Oct. 23, 1933. 

Graveside services were held at the Centerville Cemetery, Centerville, Ohio.

He had served in the United States Navy in World War II and was retired from Union Carbide Corporation in the Institute Plant. Arthur H. "Doodle" Murphey 

Arthur H. "Doodle" Murphey, 75, Newnan, died Jan. 15, 2001. He was born May 17, 1925 in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hutchinson Murphey. 

He attended Newnan High School and served in the United States Army in World War II, earning a Purple Heart. He attended Newnan High School and had owned Murphey Florist for over 50 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newnan. 

He was a member of Floria Transworld Delivery, the Rotary Club of Newnan, Main Street of Newnan, Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia State Florist Association. 

Graveside services were at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan, with the Rev. Dr. Gene Tyre, the Rev. Dr. Harry Barrow, and the Rev. Lamar "Bubba" Potts officiating. 

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Blackburn Murphey, Newnan; sons Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Hutchinson Murphey and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hutchinson Murphey, all of Newnan; and daughters Sally and Harrell Morgan, Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Alice Berry and Tom Taylor, Dallas, Texas. Joel Eugene Upshaw Sr., 87, Newnan, died Jan. 15, 2001. He was born March 12, 1913 in Georgia, the son of the late George W. and Ella Freeman Upshaw. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudis Upshaw, and a son, Joel Upshaw Jr. He had owned Upshaw Radio & TV Service and also had worked for the Coweta County School System as its first electronic specialist.

Robert G. Mason, 55, Sharpsburg, died Dec. 26, 2000. He was born April 23, 1945 in Leighton, Ala., the son of Herman and Laura Sherfield Mason. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy M. Carroll. He was a machinist and a member of the Southside Baptist Church. 

Services were held at the Hillcrest Chapel with the Rev. S. R. Jones and the Rev. Lonnie Campbell officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Newnan.

Edna Irene Nipper, 95, Peachtree City, died Jan. 2, 2001. She was born May 8, 1905 in Cleveland, Tenn.

Survivors include a son, George A. Nipper Jr., Stockbridge; a daughter, Maxine Gilstrap, Cumming; a brother, Luster Goode, Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Matthew J. Peddicord 

Matthew J. Peddicord, 22, Fayetteville, died Jan. 3, 2001. He was born Nov. 25, 1978 in Providence, R. I. He had been a team wrestling captain at Shiloh High School in Gwinnett County. It was at this time he contracted the staph pneumonia that eventually caused him to have a double-lung transplant. Just six months after this, he was diagnosed with cancer. After six months of chemotherapy, the cancer was in remission. He attended Georgia Southern University and then transferred to the University of Georgia last year. A funeral mass was held at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Father Daniel Toof officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. 

Survivors include his parents, Craig and Buffy Peddicord, Fayetteville; a sister, Kimberly Ann and James Cousins, Atlanta; and grandparents, Gerald and Cozy Peddicord, Pottsboro, Texas.

Josie Lynn "Jo" Bittain 

Josie Lynn "Jo" Brittain, 90, Newnan, died Dec. 10, 2000. She was born Oct. 25, 1910 in Sanford N.C., the daughter of Jesse David and Sallie Keith Thompson. She came to Atlanta in 1926 to attend Draughon's Business College and met her late husband, Lawrence H. Brittain. The "little cabin" at the Atlanta Historical Society was a gift from her and her husband. 

She was an avid flower grower and arranger, winning many awards, as well as being an accomplished pianist. 

Services were at the Parrott Funeral Home chapel with Bishop Bevel Jones and the Rev. Howard Griffin officiating. Interment was at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. 

Survivors include a son, Lawrence H. and Fran Brittain Jr., Montgomery, Ala.; a daughter, Susan and Tommy Boehms, Newnan; grandchildren Tommy and Pam Inman, Susie and Richard King, Amy and Dave Goldberg and Jason Brittain; and great-grandchildren Britt Inman, Ben Inman, Brooke Inman, Thomas Goldberg and Blake Brittain.

Jeanelle Lockridge 

Jeanelle Lockridge, 81, Newnan, died Dec. 22, 2000. She was born May 26, 1919 in Paulding County, Ga. She taught school in Coosa County, Ga., where she met her husband, Claude Coleman Lockridge. She also taught in Fulton County, and was known for her posters and art as teaching tools, winning a number of awards. 

Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Don Helms and the Rev. Dr. James Stewart officiating. Interment was at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. 

Survivors include a son, Stanley C. Lockridge, Sharpsburg; a brother, Forest H. Leathers, Sky Valley, Ga.; and sisters Reba Jones, McDonough, and Marcia Prodanovich, Florida.

Robert G. Mason 

Robert G. Mason, 55, Sharpsburg, died Dec. 26, 2000. He was born April 23, 1945 in Leighton, Ala., the son of Herman and Laura Sherfield Mason. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy M. Carroll. He was a machinist and a member of the Southside Baptist Church. 

Services were at the Hillcrest Chapel with the Rev. S. R. Jones and the Rev. Lonnie Campbell officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Newnan. 

Survivors include his wife, Margaret M. Mason, Sharpsburg; a son, Robert A. Mason, Sharpsburg; a son-in-law, Mickey L. Carroll, Peachtree City; grandchildren Meghan and Malory Carroll, Peachtree City, and Tony and Tyler Gaddy, Sharpsburg; a brother, George Mason, Stockbridge; and sisters Mable McCollum, Lela Hall and Gladys Letsinger, all of Leighton, Ala., and Ester Lou Spiegel, Grand Prarie, Texas.

Martha Jean Addison McKenzie 

Martha Jean Addison McKenzie, 54, Newnan, died Dec. 30, 2000. She was born Nov. 20, 1946 in Newnan. 

Services were held at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Roy Lee Coggin officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan. 

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy McKenzie, Newnan; father Jim Addison, Newnan; a son, Jimmy McKenzie Jr., Newnan; a daughter, Vicky Pizar, Newnan; brothers Billy Jo Addison and Charles Addison; a sister, Shirley Riggs; grandchildren Devin Beachboard, Jerry Beachboard and Brooke Pizar; and one great-grandchild.

Todd Story, 26, Franklin, Ga., died Dec. 31, 2000. He was born June 8, 1974 in Coweta County, Ga. He was a textile operator at Milliken.

Ann W. Reynolds, 65, Whitesburg, Ga. died Jan. 4, 2001. She was born May 4, 1935 in Newnan. She had worked in electronic production. 

Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, with the Rev. Woodrow Hudson officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan. 

Survivors include sons, Blake Davenport, Whitesburg, Michael and Sung Hee Davenport, Whitewater, Wis., and David and Teresa Rakestraw, Newnan; and sisters Sara Byers, Whitesburg, and Clestelie Richards, Newnan. There are seven grandchildren.

Otha S. Greene 

Otha S. Greene, 70, Winter Garden, Fla., formerly of Newnan, died Jan. 5, 2001. She was born July 28, 1930 in Soperton, Ga., moving with her family to Newnan in 1972. After the death of her husband of 43 years, Buford Greene, she retired to Winter Garden, Fla. 

Services were at the Jones Funeral Home chapel with Paul Dennis officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Newnan. 

Survivors include sons Lewis Greene, Steve Greene and Kenneth Greene, all of Winter Garden, Fla., and Richard Greene, Newnan; daughters Linda Tidwell, Moreland, Ga. and Sharon Meeks, Winter Garden, Fla.; sisters Evelyn Slavich, Long Islip, N.Y. and Joyce Greene, Moreland, Ga. There are 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Rachel Cannon 

Rachel Cannon, 58, Newnan, died Jan. 7, 2001. She was born Jan. 26, 1942 in Atlanta, the daughter of Frank and Cleo Elliott. She had been a resident of Newnan since 1969.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Jerry Cannon Sr., Newnan; sons Jerry Cannon Jr., Phil Cannon, Ray Cannon and Larry Cannon, all of Newnan; a daughter, Debra Mabry, Sharpsburg; and brothers Paul Elliott and Jimmy Elliott, both of Lithia Springs; and six grandchildren.

Doris Tatum Maddox 

Doris Tatum Maddox, 79, Union City, died Jan. 1. 2001. She was born Aug. 28, 1921 in Fulton County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Maddox. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. 

Graveside services were at the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, Rico, Ga. with the Rev. Terry McDaniel officiating. 

Survivors include cousins Bessie Tatum and James Tatum, both of Palmetto, and Linda Jessie, Lithonia, Ga.

Hazel M. Cook, "Miss Hazel," 83, Palmetto, died Jan. 4, 2001. She was born March 28, 1917 in Fayette County, the daughter of George Washington and Frances Gertrude Winkles Moore. 

Services were at the Palmetto Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Orr and the Rev. Tom Daugherty officiating. Interment was at Floral Hill Cemetery, Palmetto. 

Survivors include a son, Ronald and Pam Wolf Cook, Fairburn; a brother, Jack Moore, Temple, Ga.; sisters Grace Peek, Palmetto, Jessie Owen, Birmingham, Ala., and Clara Lasseter, Phenix City, Ala.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
