The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mathews Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Leesburg Cemetery. The Rev. Dwight Marshall will officiate.

A native of Grady County, Mrs. Flowers had lived in Albany before moving to Leesburg in 1987. She was retired from Flint River Textiles, and she had formerly attended Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mrs. Flowers was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Harrell.

Survivors include her husband, G.W. Flowers of Leesburg; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy Dean and Sharon Flowers of Tallahassee, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Delores (Dee Dee) and Bubba Harrell of Sylvester; father, Ralph Godwin of Albany; brother, Richard Godwin of Putney; sister, Raychel Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Matthew Harrell, Kayla Harrell, Jessica Harrell and Michelle Fowler.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Billy Marlar, 74, of Sopchoppy, Fla. died Friday, September 7, 2001, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

A memorial service was held Monday, September 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Ochlockonee Methodist Church, Panacea, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.

A native of Appalachicola, he had lived in Wakulla County for the last six years. He attended Ochlockonee Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War II where he served as a Sergeant in the US Army on the European front. He was the former owner of The Rainbow Inn and Frog Level Oyster Bar in Appalachicola, Fla. and Marlar Chevrolet/Buick in Quincy and Chattahoochee, Fla. and Fayette, Ala.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Hilda Marlar, of Sopchoppy, Fla.; two sons, Dennis Marlar of Tallahassee, Fla. and Daniel Marlar of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a daughter, Denise Wilkinson of Bradenton, Fla. and one sister, Waunell Loving, of Ashland, MS, as well as two stepsons, Dale Palmer of Americus, Ga. and David Palmer of East Point, Fla., and a stepdaughter, Donna Fowler, of Albany, Ga.; eight grandchildren and one nephew.

James Buell Shoemaker Jr.
FRANKLIN, N.C. James Buell Shoemaker Jr., 75, of Chapel Hills Drive, died Friday, September 7, 2001, at a local hospital.

A native of Fairfield, Ala., he had resided in Macon County for six years, moving from Albany, Ga. He was the son of the late James Buell Shoemaker Sr. and Edith Grace Turner Shoemaker. He was retired from Graybar Electric as an electrical wholesale salesman. He was a member of the Macon County Art Association and was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beverley Shoemaker; one daughter, Sally Shoemaker Rosser of Douglasville, Ga.; four sons, Russell Shoemaker of Cleveland, Ohio, Curtis Shoemaker of Watkinsville, Ga., Walter Shoemaker of Brandon, Fla. and Frank Shoemaker of Round Rock, Texas; one sister, Frances Jane Martin of Guntersville, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and one niece.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery. The Rev. Charlie Bridges of Dalton, Ga. will officiate.

CUTHBERT Thelma Freeman Branon, 87, of Maerick Road, Dawson, Sunday, September 9, 2001, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be conducted at a time and a date to be announced at the Cuthbert United Methodist Church with burial in East View Cemetery in Cuthbert. The Rev. Keith Goodlett will officiate.

Mrs. Branon was born April 15, 1914 in Early County, daughter of the late Moses Swann Freeman and Gretha Grimsley Freeman. She had lived in Cuthbert for many years until moving to live with her daughter in the Graves Community of Terrell County. She was a retired bookkeeper for Andrew College, was a member of the Cuthbert United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. She was a former member of the Pilot Club and was the widow of Henry Thomas Branon.

Survivors include a daughter, Gretha Mae Miller of Dawson; three grandchildren, Catie Ethridge and David B. Miller of Dawson and Stephen T. Lee of Prairie du Chien, Wisc., and six great-grandchildren.

Born April 10, 1921 in Mitchell County, Mr. Phelps was the son of the late Carl D. and Nora C. Phelps. He retired June 26, 1981 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General as an Auditor. He was a member of the Beattie Road Church of Christ in Albany. In the 1960's, he established the Camilla Church of Christ. He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilberta A. Phelps and brother, Harry Phelps.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Holton Phelps of Camilla; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jimmy Lee Shiver of Baconton; a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Debra Phelps of Albany; two stepsons, Bobby R. Holton and his wife, Gloria of Alpharetta and Randy Holton of Camilla; two sisters, Mabel Neal of St. Simons and Mary Ella Boutwell of Augusta; one brother, Duane Phelps of Camilla; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FITZGERALD Lamar A. Solomon, 44, of Albany died Sunday, September 9, 2001, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crossview Baptist Church in Fitzgerald with interment in Lone Hill Cemetery in Coffee County. The Rev. Greg Carroll and the Rev. Clayton Dowd will officiate.

A native of Coffee County, Mr. Solomon had lived in Albany since 1977. He was an aircraft mechanic for Piedmont-Hawthorn Aviation in Albany. He was a 1975 graduate of Fitzgerald High School and a 1977 graduate of Georgia Southwestern Technical School as an aviation mechanic. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his father, Aldeen Solomon of Fitzgerald; three brothers, Steve and Patsy Solomon and Gary and Merla Solomon, all of Fitzgerald and Tony and Traci Solomon of Douglas; sister, Sandra and Wade Ball of Rochelle. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred (Merritt) Solomon.

A native of Valdosta, Ga., Mrs. Shepherd had resided in the Albany area since 1972. She was a retired paraprofessional with the Dougherty County School System and a member of Thundering Springs Baptist Church. She was the widow of John Franklin Shepherd and was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis Cone and Lizzie Gray, two stepdaughters, Alice Clark and Sharon Shepherd and a stepson, Thomas Shepherd.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Fay and Kerry Ward of Leesburg; a stepson, Jimmy Shepherd of Americus; a brother and sister-in-law, Ellis M. and Jean Cone of Zephyrhills, Fla.,; a grandson, Zachery Ward of Leesburg; six step-grandchildren, Pam Powell, Mike Carter, Jerry Shepherd, Jason Shepherd, Matthew Shepherd and Rebecca Shepherd; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Williford was native and lifelong resident of Turner County and was the daughter of the late Thurman Guy and Leona Light Reed. She was a housewife and homemaker and a member of the Amboy Baptist Church.

MUSCATINE, Iowa Sara Margaret Kirkland Jackson, 78, formerly of Stuart, Fla., died Thursday, September 6, 2001, at Lutheran Homes.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church in Muscatine. The Rev. Richard Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Sylvester, Ga. at a later date.

Sara Jackson was born on March 23, 1923, in Baconton, Ga., the daughter of John Gordon and Carolyn Elizabeth Stalvey Kirkland.

She was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women with a Bachelor Degree of Science.

She has been a resident of Muscatine for the past two years, previously living in Stuart, Fla.

She was a member of the Woman's Club of Stuart, Fla., the American Association of University Women, Muscatine Newcomers and the Trinity Episcopal Church.

She was a retired interior designer and a former teacher of science and English.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Gordon Jackson and his wife, Linda, of Boca Raton, Fla., Jeffrey Taylor Jackson of Delaware, Ohio, and John Andrew Jackson of Texarkana, Texas; one daughter, Katherine Beth Jackson Miller and her husband, Rick, of Muscatine; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Elizabeth Kirkland Jones, Katherine Kirkland Alford and Loette Kirkland.

A native of Omega, Ga., Mrs. Whiddon had lived in Columbus for three years, moving there from Camilla where she had lived since 1982. She was the wife of the Rev. L.R. Whiddon Sr. and she had served faithfully by his side at the First Baptist Church of Arlington, Ga., the First Baptist Church of LaFayette, Ga., Avondale Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tenn., the First Baptist Church of Canton, Ga. and the First Baptist Church of Camilla. She had also been a school teacher including kindergarten at Avondale Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tenn. and was currently a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbus.

UNADILLA Roy Lee Smith, 75, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Haynesville Baptist Church in Houston County. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Harold Ross will officiate.

A native of Wilkinson County, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Leo Smith and Fannie M. Smith. He was a retired presser and farm worker and a member of the Haynesville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Marqurite (Truman) Duhart of Warner Robins, John (Alicia) Smith Jr. of Minnesota, Leroy (Wilhelmenia) Smith of Augusta, Fannie (Freddie) Minor, Ricky (Detrice) Smith, Rita F. (James) Walker and Tammy (Freddie) Fluellen, all of Unadilla and Anthony Brown of Hawkinsville; 23 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

A native of Lee County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late Floyd Franklin Moore. He was retired from the Georgia State Patrol as a troop commander and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a graduate of Northwestern Traffic Management Institute and a graduate of Gordon College with an associate degree.

A native of Seminole County, Mrs. Long was retired from Thompson's Manufacturing in Bainbridge, Ga., but most of her life she was a homemaker. She had a love for flowers and loved to work in her garden. Everyone who knew her loved her. She was an asset to her town. She was the daughter of the late Julius A. and Decia Odom Braswell. She was a charter member at Union Baptist Church.

Survivors of her family include her daughters, Sue Hicks Nichols of Iron City, Ga. and Barbara N. Wallace and her husband Jack of Lakeland, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Thomas C. Griffin III, Sheila J. Griffin, Tonya Grubbs, Timothy O. Hicks, Christopher L. Hicks, Frankie L. Long, Tammy R. Friedrich and Timothy Hill and 11 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Homie Maloy of Phoenix City, Ala. A special friend and caregiver, Ann Green, of Iron City, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank McCoy Long, a daughter, Betty R. Long, and a son, Larry Long; along with four brothers and two sisters.
