Samarendra Basu
ALBANY — Professor Samarendra Basu, 59, died Friday, September 14, 2001, at his home after a protracted battle with cancer. Martin Luther King Funeral Directors is in charge of cremation arrangement on the same Friday, in the afternoon, in accordance with Hindu Customs. There will be no funeral service. However, a memorial is currently being organized at Albany State University, and this will be announced later.

Dr. Samarendra Basu was born in India where he completed his postgraduate education. He acquired a Ph.D. in pure physics from the University of Calcutta, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. He moved to the United States in 1969 and completed his postdoctoral Research Associate Training in the studies of DNA in Chromosome at both the University of Chicago (Biophysics Department) and University of Texas at Dallas (Biology Department). Between 1972 and 1979, he became Cancer Research Scientist and Senior Cancer Research Scientist at Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, Roswell Park Memorial Institute and New York State Department of Health. He also became Research Scientist studying Trace Evidence and Gunshot Residue with SEM-EDX with the New York State Police Crime Laboratory. Prior to his death, he was a full professor at Albany State University where he started the Bachelor of Science Degree in Forensic Science, in the Department of Criminal Justice. He loves his job and loves his students very much. He enjoyed helping all races of students in reaching and achieving their goals. Professor Basu was a dedicated teacher and researcher. He was a member of many professional scientific organizations; he is well published at Albany State University, was voted the Albany State University Teacher of the Year in 1996/1997.

Two children, Scot and Susan Basu and an ex-wife, Helen Basu, survive Dr. Samarendra Basu.

DAWSON — Louise Reddick McDonell, 83, of Dawson, formerly of Cuthbert died Thursday, September 13, 2001, at Dawson Manor Nursing Home.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the graveside in Eastview Cemetery in Cuthbert with Rev. James R. Emery officiating.

Mrs. McDonell was a native of Stewart County, but lived in Randolph County most of her life. She was born August 13, 1918, daughter of the late Whit Reddick and Mittie Missouri Morris Reddick. She was a retired bookkeeper with Pataula Electric Membership Corp. with more than 30 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cuthbert and the Winsome Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Hewlett McDonell of Cuthhbert.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara M. Baldwin of Dawson and Mary M. Gannon of Leesburg; four grandchildren, Lisa H. Harvey and Robert Andrew Baldwin II, both of Dawson, Stacy Gannon of Augusta and Jim Gannon of Leesburg; two great-grandchildren, William M. Harvey and Madeline E. Harvey, both of Dawson.

Born August 9, 1948, in Eufaula, Ala., Mrs. Parmer was the daughter of the late William Arthur and Eileen Creel Hatfield. She was a member of the Arlington, Ga. Church of God.

Her parents were the late Sanders Bryan and Lula Belle Willis Bryan Marchant. She was a member of Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mr. Morgan was born August 20, 1914 in Clay County to the parentage of the late Fannie and Dennis Morgan. He was educated in the public school of Clay County and also a member of the Aim Well AME Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Morgan of Ft. Gaines; four daughters, Mae M. (Herbert) Waters of Atlanta, Barbara Morgan of Manchester, Conn., Terry Morgan of Fort Gaines and Tanya M.
